1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Limited edition dolls

Feb 8, 2018

    1. Every doll company releases special, signature, holiday, or theme versions. I appreciate the companies putting effort in creating these collaborations. Some are works of art to me. So when a new doll is presented in such a beautiful manner, it’s exciting. Hobbies are all about want, not need. I don’t care if you buy a base doll or limited. I only care about what I buy.

    2. For me, it’s all about shelling a character, and the limited angle really doesn’t factor into it at all. Sometimes the perfect doll is a basic…sometimes the perfect one is limited…sometimes their fullset is perfect…sometimes it’s not. It’s just whatever works, and I’ve never noticed any difference in quality between them. Regardless, I always purchase on layaway because that allows me to fold the payments comfortably into my budget (so if it’s limited, I can usually still make it work within the allotted timeframe.)

    3. I mostly like limited dolls, but have some common ones too. I love owning something I know just anybody cannot own, because the less I see similar dolls, the more unique and special my own dolls feel to me. I gladly pay more to have a doll many people will not own, and I would be disappointed if after the initial orders the seller decides to release the dolls as an unlimited basic. However, I don't buy any doll solely because it is limited, it's just one property that adds my interest in an already interesting doll.

I don't own or buy limited fullsets with outfits or makeup, because they hardly ever fit my characters and I don't like having exactly same looking dolls as someone else. So often I don't care much if the doll comes with special accessories or clothing, to me limited body and head sculpts matter the most. I prefer to buy blank limited dolls so I don't need to bother to sell the extras away later. I do have some limited outfits that were a part of a limited edition fullset from companies like Iple, but I don't wear them on Iple dolls.

    4. Yes!

    5. All of my dolls are limited or have become limited by circumstances. My first doll was a basic one but he’s been long discontinued. My second doll was also basic and same as the first, discontinued plus he’s a hybrid, so mostly one of a kind customized. My 3rd boy was a limited release from an independent artist. My Volks girls are by default limited. My Volks Beth is sometimes rereleased in lotteries but my Volks Sophie is truly limited. Haven’t seen her be rereleased ever.

I can see collectors buying limited in the hopes of reselling it later when it’s expensive. All types of collectors do this in other hobbies. You have to be strategic about it though and the sculpt has be super popular.

    6. I don't buy dolls based on whether they're limited or basic, just based on whether they fit what I want to see in my collection. I have an assortment of basic, limited, discontinued, and event dolls in my collection, and the only factor being limited might play for any of them is when I might move on buying them (or, alternately, if I just pass on them entirely).
