Minimee Discussion

I'm a big supporter of Evie, i must confess that Minimee heads to me were too strange, i was a newbie into BJD hobby anyway. But after browsing the pictures of Evie face up i changed my mind about it. My first head made by DIM was Sakurai, he's still a floating head sadly, then i got Daniel Craig and the last one is Brandon Lee, which is pretty different cause he's pretty stylized.
I'm not fond anyway of the work of 1/6 heads that Denny made so far i found again these molds too much in comparison with other 1/6 sculpt head, believe the 1/6 scale is amazing and there are a lot of talented artists into the hobby.

 

The first MNM I saw was of a lady who had one custom made based on her likeness; I believe that was the point of the Minimee service DIM had created back then.
It was interesting to see but I didn't have any intentions of owning a portrait doll of myself. When people started organizing group orders for famous characters/people,
that's when I was actually interested. I never thought that some companies within this hobby would move towards realism, it was refreshing to see.
Now, if only companies were making a broader range of realistic bodies (seriously doubt it's going to happen anytime soon)...

Note: I've added DiM as 'DiM china' and 'DiM korea' because for most of the minimees DiM made, they had them sculpted and cast in China, not Korea. Only at the very end were the sculpts made in-house at DiM in korea. This in important information because the Korea cast heads WILL match DiM resin and the China cast heads will not.

Since DiM stopped making Minimees, what companies out there do custom heads? I'm looking to have a specific head made, so I'm not looking for a company that only has pre-made celebrity heads, like Namonaki Workshop, though their work is gorgeous. I also don't want to have to buy 10 heads. I want just one, just for me. Who still does just one, just the way you want?

 

Bishounen_Hideto, having one head made has always been very expensive and companies have always been ubwilling to do all that custom work for just 1 head. Even DiM, back in the day made no less than two and it cost $300+ per head.
The problem is that of a base price that must be paid before even a single head is cast.

The costs for a Minimee consists of:
Base cost:
1x sculpting fees (this is set by the artist and will include all cost of making the base sculpt).
1x a set of molds. (Molds made for casting resin can only last a max of 30 pieces (20 if there resin is darker colored))
per head: the cost of the resin and the cost of labor for the actual casting
per head: the aftercare of the product (I know that Dollshe has this as a separate cost, most other companies includes this in the cost of casting)

So a cost calculation of a minimee may look like this:
sculpting fee: $400
mold making: $150
price per head cast (incl. aftercare) $70.

That would mean that casting only one head would cost: $620.
Two: $690 total = $345 per head
Three: $760 total = $254 per head
...
Ten: $1250 total = $125 per head.

And that is why people do group orders for Minimees.

And as to your question, as long as you are willing to pay the sculpting fee, some sculptor will be interested in sculpting your head. And there are enough companies that are willing to cast what ever you send them (barring reproducing some other companies work). I know Dollshe will cast, and Magical Angel and Mirodoll and Fdoll. Nobility doll too, most probably.

 

Hideto every company could make just one head, but cost are about 900usd if not more. I know cause i've asked to Mirodoll and also to Namonaki for a head based onto a celebrity and both gave me this quote, i believe that also Magical Angel offers this service but quoting price is basicly the same, the best route is a group order.

Yes, that's probably a good idea. In 'other' should probably go all characters (vs. the celebs in the other two groups)

Or maybe there should be a group for Anime; there seem to be enough minimees made to warrant having their own group.

I actually purchased one of the DBSK/JYJ Junsu heads and it's on its way to me I can't wait to get him even if I need a body and a million other things for him. I had several jrock Minimees but ended up selling them due to circumstances - it'll be nice to have one again!

To add to the list, I'm pretty sure there was also a head made for DBSK's Yunho.
