Misty Blue Elf Kumi - Yellowing Alert!

Apr 13, 2007

    1. It also primarily seems to be Kumis that are changing, so that would certainly seem to fall in line with the bad batch theory.

    2. I do wonder about the different batches. Also it seems like the 'earlier batch' LSG Pepes are the ones more blue and the 'later batch' Pepes are more purpley. I think they'd already made a batch or two and when those ran out they took orders for the next batch. That would also help explain why the photographs on the site seem to show the more blue ones and not the more purple. I don't know if that has any affect on their color fading or not.

Someone said that one of the LSGs was also fading? Was that a blue or a purple? I couldn't find the reference.:sweat

      Thanks!
      H

    3. It was purple the owner said it faded somewhat but I think it stabilized

    4. AreeElf- is yours one of the fullset painted Misty Blues? When did you get her?

Wee_Little_Faerie - I've only had my viya misty blue for a bit, since I ordered with dollflower eyes. I haven't noticed any change of color yet, but I've only taken her out once in a shady place and other than that she's been sitting in a dark room.

*sigh* I'm still totally torn as to what to do. *___*

I wonder how much stock to place in whether MSC really does prevent yellowing or not.

    5. With my misty blue yellowing so much already, I also wonder about this. Since her uncoated headcap also yellowed *under her white wig*... I know I've read that fabric often doesn't have as high an SPF as one would think, and white can be the worst, but still.

I can't tell whether I should be going "geez, it didn't help at all!" or "OMG, imagine what the uncovered part would look like with NO MSC UV..." I'm leaning towards it not helping though, since the top area of her forehead near her headcap that *is* coated and was also under her wig looks pretty much the same as the uncoated cap.

    6. I've got a fullset MB Kumi (doll and wig only) w/out dollflower eyes.

So far I haven't noticed any obvious fading...

(of course, she's still in a blanket... wondering about spraying her, but I've got MSC-UVcut... so who knows if that'll be any good since it's apparently being reformulated!) :(

    7. Is she yellowing over-all? Evenly? How can you tell how much she's yellowing--just by eye? Is the inner-side of the head-cap still blue?

I need to figure out a way to compare the color... I was looking at the inner side of her head-cap. And also over-all to see if there were any part that were changed against the rest of her...

I wish I had one of those Pantone Color Swatches set... (I thought I had one from art school, but it's been ages and I haven't seen it), so I had something set to compare my doll's color to...

Or a color and gray scale to use for photographing...

    8. Mine is a mistyrose and I was one of the first people to get my elves I got her on March 03. She usually sits on my mantle behind a window which has heavy drapes. So she gets indirect sunlight filtered through the drapes.

    9. I described the yellowing patterns in the very first post on the thread:

And yes, the inside of the headcap is still blue, along with the band where the fur of her wig was folded over in a stripe around her head, which was coated with MSC UV cut.

    10. Sorry about not remembering your earlier thread! I have a memory like a sieve, unfortunately!

OK... so it seems as if it's not just time creating the fading, if the inside headcaps are still bluer... (although hard to say if they aren't slowly changing, too... just less than the outside). At least its one way to judge how much fading is going on with the exposed parts...

      THANKS! :)

... Is it only a few people who are noticing color changes? I wonder how prevalent the problem is, really?

... And are the MB Kumis that are changing... are they in the same batch?

... I think one was briefly in sunlight and the other only in indirect... right?

... Other colors... one LSG reported with some color change? No MR, yet?

    11. as for me... I've only taken her out once, in shade for about 10 minutes tops. other than that she's been sitting in a shady room.

I looked her over today, and I"m not sure if I'm paranoid, or whether I would have even noticed if not for this thread,... but it SEEMS like she's perhaps a little more yellow than when I first got her? If so, it's mostly even, and isn't undesirable at all. She's still totally adorable. and I'd just say that she's a "mint" color. I thought that I remembered her being slightly more blue when I first got her. Still misty and cute and all.
maybe she hasn't yellowed at all. I'm not sure.

However, when I looked around, I didn't see any areas that were more yellow than others...

the only except is that when you take her wig off, there's a slightly bluer area right above each of her ears and at the base of her head in the back. Either she was always like this, or maybe this is evidence of her yellowing? I'm not sure. It doesnt seem like an area where she would have been blushed bluer, especially the back of the head like that? It's not very noticable.

I got her April 3rd. I haven't done anything additional other than what BC did to her (so her face was coated by BC, but I havent done additional coating)

what do you guys think? I dunno maybe I'm just being paranoid. I can't tell.

    12. She definately looks more blue in those circled areas *nods*

I don't think it's evidence of yellowing though... those areas look more blue than my Kumi ever was.

    13. Those areas look to me like what my MBC looked like when she came right out of the box...

    14. Aimee: definitely looks bluer in those spots. My elf had uneven darker and light spots of resin in the torso and heel right out of the box, could that be the same. I put it down to non-homogeneity of th resin color. ie the pigment not being mixed well enough at time of casting

    15. thanks guys, I guess I'll have to wait and see.

    16. I'm not sure about mine either Aimee. I don't want to just be paranoid - but my Kumi just looks more minty to me. I know in my comparison pics it's hard to tell because the lighting was different.

I've also noticed "hot spots" of color - I circled them below.

Maybe the inside of the ears is part of the faceup on these - not sure:

Inside the headcap looks the same to me as outside of doll:

    17. I just took her extra hands out of the box - and some of my color change has to be her getting indirect light (she does not sit in the sun) - because they were definitely less yellow. I could NOT get this to show up in photos. I tried all different kind of lighting. The only one you can see it in is the 3rd one down - and it seems like it only showed up because it is out of focus (focused on the chair instead). But in person - there is a noticeable difference. And GASP - I even put her out in the sun for a few seconds to get a shot - just in case that lighting would work to show the difference (it didn't).

This is more true to how I am seeing it in person (hand on right is the extra hand):

Just wanted to add in here that my doll arrived March 1st. I believe she was one of the first dolls to arrive.

    18. I think you can see it in the second one down as well... I should check mine against my spare hands... and possibly start leaving the spare hands out. It would be no good if just those stayed crispy blue and everything else changed...

    19. Aimee: If Viya blushed yours the same way she blushed mine, then that's the blushing you're looking at.

Mine has blushing along her cheeks, above and around her ears, and back of her head. So it's darker than the rest of her head and headcap.

    20. Yes, that definitely looks like a change, although it is still a pretty color, it is so fast! I wonder if they will stabilize soon, or continue to change or fade?
