Modding the gender of a doll/switching male heads to female bodies+vise versa?

Jan 25, 2007

    1. Well I like the Camine Head from Dream of Doll, but I would buy a female body for him. I think the head makes for an awesome tomboy! lol

    2. Thee are so many female dolls that get me thinking HEY she'd make a hot boy >o Though personally I'd just get a boy body rather than sand off the boobs. Sanding off the boobs doesn't make it a boy IMO it's now just a flat girl XD Unless the boy parts were added :P

    3. I personally don't like the trend too much ^^; I really dislike how the bodies look afterwards (though I've seen amazing jobs of people did that to their dolls) but I don't know :? I agree with you that some dolls are just too masculine to be a girl . I honestly don't like it too much...Isn't it easier just to buy the other body and just do a different face up :sweat

Well, actually now that I think about it you save money  but yeah. Boy molds being turned into girl molds is okay and the visa versa but I don't like the bodies when people sand them down and show the doll off naked and stuff xD
      It's weird....

    4. This is sort of a footnote to all of this but I prefer small breasts on dolls [no idea why] and so if I fell in love with a sculpt that came attached to big boobs, I'm lopping them off. So it still falls in the realm of gender modification, ne? I don't seem to mind the nipplelessness though.

I'm fine with gender switching and such. I think Volks does it the best as they have many more head molds that seem more androgynous, to me at least. The School Heads for instance look fabulously both as boys and as girls. Although, there are certainly many more boys out there. I also think a lot of Soom's 65 cm+ dolls pass better as boys than as girls. With the exception of Saiph who I prefer as a girl mostly because I know a girl irl who has a similar look. <3

I can see myself transitioning bodies from one gender to another if the body in question didn't fit the character. A FtM mod for a lithe and narrow male character or a MtF for a more muscular and rail thin female character. Although, I don't usually like female mastectomies where the chest was reconstructed to be that of a boy, like with the muscles and nips included. If I were to do that, I'd just sand the chest flat with some small definition. It just otherwise looks poorly done to me. Like bad plastic surgery.

    5. You don't always have the option of just switching bodies. For instance the Luts 08 Wintery head will fit just the delf boy body, not the girl one. So if I want a Luts 08 Wintery girl I'll either need to modify the head [may or may not be possible or be aesthetically undesirable], body hunt or modify a delf boy into a girl. [remove the peen, apoxy some boobs, sand down the muscles and broadnessity] That's just one scenario. Another might be that you have a boy character who's very uke and physically "weak" in appearance that would require a female body as some male bodies offered by companies are too muscular to really fit. [sorry for using the word "weak," I couldn't think of a better descriptor]

    6. There are many female heads I would rather use for a boy... And not even androgynous. I've always liked girly boys, and therefore don't mind my doll having a very cute, delicate face and a male body. I was planning to make a boy from Volks Suiseiseki... Actually, I am not planning any female dolls... so if I love the mold...;)

      Edit;

It's a great point! So far the only body I can use for some of my uke-ish dolls is Volks SD10 boy body... I've never considered modding a female body, but it's an interesting idea... (not that I am going to do that, too much trouble with the peen)

    7. If I couldn't mask the manly shape with clothes and what-not I'd do it. The doll I'm currently preparing to purches is a DZ Mo boy, and his character is a cross-dresser beyond all things. A very delicate, doll-like male who wears a LOT of lolita clothes and has very girly ways of moving. Usually enough padding around the hips is sufficent but he's not supposed to have the same curvature as a woman, he IS a man.

But if the character required such a modification I'd do it for him in a heart-beat simply because I wouldn't be comfortable with a too-manly version of such a character.

    8. Some boy heads make better girls than others.
I like gender switching for dolls.
I have a lu-wen vampire whom girl body is in customs right now. She will be a really great girl. ^^

I also want a feeple Esther turn into a boy/gender neutral in future. First I wanted to have just a boy body underneath the head, but now I decided to mod the girl body because of 2 reasons: The girl body is somewhat smaller. (He will have a delf girlfriend and the size difference is big, but with the boy body even bigger) and I prefer the overal shape of the girl body.

I am also thinking of changing the regular soom heliot head into a girl. However, I am still unsire because the jawline looks quite masculine. So I'll decide that later, when my heliot arrives. If it will be female, I will buy a female body, not mod a boy body into female.

    9. I actually intend to buy a boy body and a girl head for a certain character of mine. S/he is a special case, however. The character that the doll is based on is male, biologically, but considers themself to be female in mind and spirit. However, they don't feel a disconnect with their body, so they don't intend to get gender reassignment surgery. They have a very feminine face, partly by birth and partly by design (they wear make up to highly the feminine parts of their face and maintain a very feminine hairstyle), so it really makes more sense to get a very slightly masculine female head and put it on a male body.

      Clear as mud? XD

    10. That's my boy right there. When I saw Angelregion Diana Pride I wanted to get her head for a boy and originally I was going to get a boy's body to swap with, but the more photos of the AR bodies I looked at the less I liked the boy body for my character Aero. He's small and pretty physically weak. Even that one cm added to the height of the boy body irked me as I pretty much wanted him as short as I could manage without looking just silly next to my other full size dolls. AR bodies aren't super curvy either so he really just looks like a slender somewhat awkward boy. I think the less defined muscles makes him that much more 'younger' which is the look I wanted for him. In all honesty the girl body really makes him perfect. And he doesn't really look like a girl pretending to be a boy either.

      Some of the mods I look at and I don't really get it because it does look like a flat chested girl or a guy in drag because the girl body used was too curvy or the boy body used was too bulky. I'm not saying they're wrong, I just don't like them as much, but I really don't mind modded gender swapping usually. Sometimes your tomboy or girly boy just needs that extra something. And I'm not really for or against the adding of 'parts' either. I doubt I'll ever sculpt my boy bits down there, but to me he's a boy and I don't think its all that important for me. I'm not using it for anything anyway. ^__^;;

    11. I don't think I would ever mod a body from one gender to the other, i jsut haven't found the need (not saying I wouldn't If the mood struck me for a certain doll). I will be using Three Crobidoll Thor heads to make twin girls (Iwont go into why i need three heads ><) I'm just searching for the right small busted body for them. ^^

    12. I honestly don't understand 90% of the time when some boy dolls are are dressed like girls -- I've noticed a countless number of them, when I feel the whole doll couldn't be any more masculine. Then again, it's personal preference. (There was a cry at a recent meet for more straight boy dolls in the community, lol.) I don't understand why you would want to mod a body to become the other gender, when it makes more sense to just get the right gender body. That's just redundant.

On the other hand, in general I don't see a problem with sculpt heads being switched and face-ups done to make them look like the other gender from what they were intended to be. Sometimes it looks odd, but again, that's just me. Ironically, sometime in the future I would love to get a Dollzone Cherry head on a boy body -- I thought she was a guy when I first saw her photos. With a different face-up, I can totally see it. It's hard to not contradict myself. I guess it's just personal taste.

    13. I have an immature tiny, a DIM Choseol, who came on a girl body.

I'm his third owner, in part because they thought William was a girl (he says, scornfully).

He now has a little tiny symbolic penis, with no attempt whatsoever at any sort of realism.

His sisters, Kore & Chloe (another open-eyed Choseol and a drowsy Choseol) are girly as all get-out.

Every one of them would be offended if I made up three little sets of red t-shirts and denim overalls. . . . . [/plots]

    14. I've found androgyny & genderless characters/people appealing for as long as I can remember, not sure exactly why. I have a facination with combining 'opposites' of many kinds. I have two partially complete character designs that are mixed gender in one case & totally sexless in the other. I've never managed to find a story i was fully happy with for them so am considering hybridising them into one new character who would display minimal gender characteristics (i'm still undecided on which sex organs). I think the DC Kid08 body could be quite good for shelling this character as it is technically male but has a very feminine build. I might/might not partially sand the penis and carve additional female-ish parts (i'm thinking XXY maybe). It's definatly a far-future project unless i get suddenly swamped in inspiration & money.
The 'gender' of these charactesr is not the key factor in their design but it does effect their lives significantly and so is an important consideration.

    15. I have never modded an outwardly female body to male as I have not needed too. I can understand why people would do it though and I think if that's what they want to do why not? I do have some very feminine looking boys though and one has a female head sculpt. Really we can do whatever we like with our dolls and it doesn't matter whether others approve of it or not. Also one persons idea of what is beautiful can differ greatly from that of another person. I know my thinking in general is fairly open minded though and not just with dolls I tend to think anything goes:)

    16. I finished modding my Minifee M-line girl into a boy just the other day. Sanding down those massive full-bust boobs was an experience I'd rather not repeat without a dremel in the future (all of it was done manually, by hand and low to high grade sandpaper). The reason I did that was because I needed an almost genderless body for my character plus his short stature made the m-line a perfect candidate for him. Many people could argue I could have simply opted for a male body but none that I've seen fit him as perfectly as the modded one does.

I think everyone should do what they like best with their dolls and what they feel sits best with the character or their personal aesthetic. Whether others like it or not has nothing to do with one's own enjoyment of their hobby and creations.

    17. It honestly bothers me to see gender changing mods. Maybe it's because I'm a guy and sanding off anything bothers me. LOL! It's just not my thing . That said, if someone mods their doll in that way I'd never say anything. Using Boy heads on girl bodies and vice verse doesn't bother me as much. No clue as to why.

    18. I'm considering doing this with a Doll Chateau body, but their breasts are so small on the Kid/MSD sized anyway I may leave them. My reasons for it though are for character reasons. Personally, most of the heads I see and love are male- but I really love the shapes of more of the female bodies. The only exception is DC, who has beautiful male bodies- but I don't want all of my dolls to be really tall!

    19. I'm definitely planning on putting a few boy heads onto female bodies. My current quest is an Iplehouse Chris on an EID female body (possibly with her chin sanded down a tiny bit - depends on how that ends up looking).

I just find that most girl dolls look so demure/innocent/vapid it's actually a little sickening. It's like they're just supposed to be a pretty, harmless outside and no personality to speak of. Bleh to what THAT represents. So I generally find myself either searching out the few girl dolls that have some appearance of personality to them (bonus is that most often the girls with personality have some kind of a mischievous/happy look to them, which I like), or sticking boy heads on girl bodies because that's the only way I can get the roughness and the attitude I'm looking for.

    20. Totally understand what you mean. There's so few girl headsculpts that I like as much as boys, and most of the girls I do like are considered very "exaggerated".
