Modding the gender of a doll/switching male heads to female bodies+vise versa?

Jan 25, 2007

    1. There are so many effeminate male head sculpts around, it's easy for me to see the male to female. There are a number of head sculpts that come default on male bodies that I'm actually enamored with as females. I'd probably do the gender swap by actually buying another body, though, sanding off and/or adding pieces seems a) almost like too much effort, and b) really dangerous as getting the right shape is concerned, I'd probably be too scared of the permanence to attempt it.

That said, I do prefer female MSDs with less boob... as in, very flat, and there aren't too many of those that I've seen. As that is concerned, a male body seems like an option. Sanding down a female body to have less boob also seems like an option.

All in all, I probably wouldn't attempt any sanding. I'd be more likely to buy a different gendered body for a head, if I wanted that.

    2. I'm not interested in modded gender swaps (for my own reasons - I prefer 'company' dolls to heavily customised dolls), but I don't mind gender swaps made by simply putting a male head on a female body, or vice-versa.

I have a Soom Benmore head (male) that I consider a female character and have on a female SuperGem body. And, honestly, a lot of Soom's heads are very ambiguous - I'd say that Heliot, Amber, Sard, and Onyx all work easily as male or female, just off the top of my head. I've also seen female Chalcos and Chroms, and even a male Topaz! BJD sculpts can be incredibly versatile with regards to gender.

    3. I have a doll sold as female as a male, though he's not modded (except the nose. That's not to do with his gender, though. It was so pointy. x.x). All I did with him was hybrid him onto a male body. Other Leekeworld Mabels I've seen are lovely and very cute girls, but I definitely think the sculpt is plenty androgynous enough to work just as well for a young boy as a young girl. Whatever makes you happy, right? ^^

    4. At one point I realized my male doll should have been a girl, so I sanded the body to be gender-neutral. She was a Soom Teenie Gem though, so the rest of the body didn't need to be changed because it's pre-pubescent.

On the other hand, I modified a female Soom TG body for a hybrid to be a boy because it was the only body I had, and even though the body is pre-pubescent, the character is an incubus, and therefore a very sexual creature, so I made him very, um, well endowed, in comparison to the original TG boy sculpt on the other body, anyway.

    5. Mhmm, my friend has a doll which was a boy first and she turned him into a girl... a girl without boobs but the rest of the body is entirelt female. Looking at the doll now, i would have never guessed that she used to be male. It turned out really nice and she is by far one of the most beautiful female dolls i've ever seen :)

    6. Sorry in advance if there's already a recent thread on this! I looked but couldn't find one.

What do you guys think about putting sculpts intended for one sex on a body of the opposite sex? For example, taking a sculpt that a company releases on a boy body and putting it on a girl body.

Is it something you've done? Would you consider it even if there were logistical problems, such as the neck sizes not being the same, ect?

I'm always surpised at how creative owners can be in transforming dolls beyond their company-given concept! Any pictures of such dolls and/or explanations as to what led you to make that decision would be very interesting to see.

EDIT: I was too slow in typing up the poll for it to be submitted, so please post your answers here.
      • Have you put a girl's head on a boy's body?
      • What about a boy's head on a girl's body?
      • If you haven't, would you consider doing so if you found the right match?
      • Is it just not for you?

    7. I have an artist head (girl) on a Sd Ariadoll 14 year Elegance boy body, I love it! :)

    8. My next planned doll is an Iplehouse Chris head (male) on hopefully a male body modded to be a more muscular female one. (Unless someone can produce a suitably imposing and powerful female body before I order).

I've also seen an Elfdoll Vivien head painted and styled as a boy and I must say it gave me some ideas about my own character. He looks like a very intense younger teen.

There are some things I wouldn't want to do, but they stay true even for non-cross-sex hybrids. I'd rather not have to mod the neck excessively, and resin match is very important to me because I've seen in person how awful it can look when resins don't match... not just in colour, but in texture and transluscency.

The only thing that some times makes me sad, is that some female heads will come out and you'll immediately have a peanut gallery all lined up and crowing up how much "better" the female head would be as a boy, she's "ugly" as a girl, blah blah blah <insert offensive term for trans* people here>. I've seen it for both Soom Dia and Iplehouse Stella when they were still new and all I can think of is well, I'm happy to hear that you don't believe that women should look strong. Don't get me wrong, if some head works for your character who happens to be a different gender, then good luck to you working out your best possible doll. That doesn't bother me. But going around throwing slurs and proclaiming that women with strong features are ugly is completely unacceptable.

    9. I love it! I do it all the time. I've got a boy I'm working on now who's sculpt is usually painted girly. It was fun giving him his serenely masculine new look. I only have one doll in my collection that I've never felt the need to take power tools to. I just love giving my dolls plastic surgery...if you'll pardon the pun.

      • Have you put a girl's head on a boy's body

Not yet, but I plan to :) It will be an LLDT Edria head. He'll be the twin to my Edria girl :3
      • What about a boy's head on a girl's body?
I don't see anything wrong with that either, thought I think I haven't done so.

Also, I think the majority of sculpty can go both ways with the right face-up & blushing. Some companies are already doing twin pics of their sculpts. -> Maya & Wish from Doll Leaves I've seen displayed as both, girl and boy.
Luts Ani e.g. is also shown for both genders :)

With my LLDT Edria twins I've at first only been looking for a head that would work for my girl. But when I saw the blank head, I felt in love with it. Browsing flickr helped support the flicker of the idea to get myself an Edria boy as well. And before I knew it, I was plotting twins. Will take a while for both of them to come home, but I think they will be totally worth it.

    10. On male heads with female bodies:
I have a Breakaway head (sold as a boy) on a girl's body permanently. This is Bambi :3

With Delfs, it gets really obvious whenever you use a boy's head on a girl's body or vice versa. Boy's heads are subtly larger than the girl's so when on female bodies, they look especially bobble-headed. This is especially obvious when it comes to older boy's heads like Shiwoo, Chiwoo, and El. Not sure if I'm too used to Bambi, but I can't tell if she looks bobble-headed.

The neck parts are different too as males have a thicker neck and females a thinner one. Bobble-head look enhances.

And then there's also the issue of male heads having masculine features. (Up until now, I can't stop seeing Bambi's nose as masculine :/ )

On female heads with male bodies:

I've tried this before but I don't have any photos of it. Putting female heads on male bodies look really bizarre as well when it comes to Delfs. The necks are too large making the heads seem more pin-headed. The only case I've seen this successful was in the Lishe Boy. Luts even released one and it looked amazing --> [LINK]

    11. I love it when people do this. (Mixin' up that whole gender thing, yeahhh)

With some companies the proportions don't always work so well... but when they do, results can be so cool. I also love it when people mix other body parts around, like switching in a male torso to get abs on a female doll.

    12. Love Bambi clowve <3

      I'm another Delf owner who has a boy head on a female body. When I first saw the Dreaming Shiwoo on the Luts website, I knew it would make an excellent girl! Padma is definitely one of my favourite dolls;

      Hey girl
      by Kafersface, on Flickr

The 'bobble head' thing doesn't bother me at all, especially because the only other girl I have is the Feeple60 Juri that looks like the Juri05 from Luts, and she also has a big head! I think it is a shame, as Lelite said, that some sculpts are assumed to be ugly in one gender or the other. I think Soom Dia looks amazing as a girl and a body :D and it's good that a lot of companies nowadays make it so you can swap the heads around, so you can have the perfect mix that you want.

    13. I enjoy seeing this too!
I plan on getting only boys (probably) and a few of them will probably have girl heads!
Don't think there should be a restriction or anything... they are dolls and made to shell our characters and fantasies so we are free to do whatever we want with them!
Some of the most handsome boys (and that doesn't even exclude manly, grown men) come from using a female head sculpt!
It's also always interesting to see when people mod male bodies to be female and vice versa! Love the creativity!

      • Have you put a girl's head on a boy's body?

Nope. I only collect girls, so I haven't done that.

      • What about a boy's head on a girl's body?

Yes, more than once. I have a Delf El on a female Elfdoll body and a LUTS Wintery '08 (who, as an event head is more gender neutral but was originally promoted on a male body by LUTS) on a female CH body.
And I plan, if I can get my hands on the heads in the first place, to have more girls-that-are-usually-boys.

In general, I quite enjoy seeing dolls those heads were originally meant for the opposite gender. It keeps things interesting in this hobby. It's also rather easy with the more old-school sculpts, as many are very gender-fluid and can look good either way. But even with the more realistic sculpts from companies like Iplehouse it's fascinating and inspiring to see what people can come up with and it really keeps things spicy.

      • Have you put a girl's head on a boy's body? Yes! I have a Ringdoll Wagashi boy right now, as well as a Volks School D boy (which I don't think had an assigned gender, but I usually see it as a girl).
      • What about a boy's head on a girl's body? Yes! Currently, all of my girls are girl heads, but I once had Mirodoll switch heads for me, and have done faceups on 'male' heads to be used on female bodies. My friend had a Bobobie Apollo girl who surprising looked very natural.

I think most heads are pretty gender neutral. With the right body and faceup, they can make nice dolls of either gender (though admittedly, some would be very masculine women, and some very young, girly boys). I think the bigger problem is often neck size. Finding a girl body with a neck big enough to support a male Super Gem....or a boy body with a neck slender enough to support one of the smaller Elfdoll female heads....is not an easy task, though there are certainly some very skilled artists out there that could do the job.

    14. I have 2 girl heads on boy bodies. Aischylos is an RS Yao head on the Ming body. He's also got a pair of girl hands as he's a very delicate, feminine-looking boy. Dakvir is a Doll-Love God-Enjoy head on the boy body. I got both dolls directly from the companies that make them and there were no issues with head/body swapping as far as neck/head size goes. Aischylos does get confused by people as a girl but the Ming body is also fairly slender, which doesn't help identify his gender easily. Dakvir is almost never confused for a girl despite him having ankle-length hair.

    15. I'm guilty of this multiple times over... =/ Dollzone Nyu, Minifee Celine, Ante, Shushu and Dollfie Dream Aoi are all girl sculpts I made into boys. I just like them like that for their characters I guess!
