Modesty with your dolls.

Sep 20, 2011

    1. Weeellll... I know that my dolls are actually inanimated objects. But i treat them as they're little persons. So i, like, never leave them undressed etc. But talking about modesty i think it's totally personal and depends on each doll's character. Like if they could decide their clothes. If i had any characted who would've liked such dresses, i'd be cool with that. Why'd i set up any rules about modesty for them? You can't be that serious with dolls.

    2. I agree with dressing dolls based on personality, but if you think about their personality is also what suits your own tastes. My my girls are always dressed just a little sexy, but that level depends on their figure- my minifee moe full bust for example wears a very low cut dress to show off her shape and flirty personality. My feeple 65 is classy lady and wear tight fitted clothing with out showing off to much skin. I don't think dressing tinies in revealing clothing is good, they are two child like, mine wears a pretty little girly dress and bow on her head.

    3. I also think you should just dress your dolls how you want. It's no one's business but yours wear you do with your things as long as you're not harming anyone(: I'm a girl and I just bought a rather busty body with the intention of dressing my new doll a bit more scantily(;

    4. It's.... a doll--and it is artistic. I'm not sure the modesty element applies here. I don't see anything wrong with dressing it in a way that emphasizes the beauty of it (that's sorta the point?). I think a lot also depends on character. Any doll from an ancient world will be showing a lot more skin than say a Victorian doll. (Or you know... a mermaid. Not all the girls wore shells.) I think your doll should wear as much clothing as you and it feels comfortable with. (Some dolls hate clothes. I once had a character [male] who refused to wear shirts and shoes. He was the loin cloth type.) So... yeah. I agree with personal preference and comfort level.

    5. From the perspective of a married man displaying dolls, I am well aware of my wife's sensitivities. I don't want her to be embarrassed; I want her comfortable with this hobby. I need her on my side in many ways, so I don't want to foster unspoken resentments that will bubble over in to unexpected areas of our life together. I already do that unintentionally as it is ( I'm a guy; what'd you expect?). So I tend to carry those same considerations over to how I dress the dolls. I look around at how people dress to be comfortable yet look good, and I find those components will work the same on our dolls. Ball Jointed Dolls are well named, and the joints can be distracting. I prefer costuming that covers or disguises those areas. As a result, a well fitted outfit that covers and defines the figure is more attractive to me and is suitable for the wide range of audiences that frequent our home. Our dolls then become ambassadors representing a tiny portion of what the hobby has to offer.

    6. I find I am quite modest with my female dolls, I don't post pictures of their breasts and if I do a shoot with a topless girl her breasts are covered by hair or a pillow. I guess they are my 'little girls' in a way, I wouldn't want my teenaged daughter putting her boobs all over the net so I try to be respectful of that when shooting.

As for other people's dolls I don't have a problem with seeing that at all, if that's the type of character the doll has then it makes sense for them to have pictures like that. My girls are not very 'sexy' characters so it would be out of context for them.

    7. I feel awkward when I sexualize dolls. To me, they're little, pure-minded people who are safe with me, who never have to know about the terrible things out there in the world. So my girl doll wears jeans and an overly big sweater, with striped socks in the winter. Though, it's really just a matter of opinion.

    8. Well it has already been said, but here I go as well. I think it all comes down to the owner's taste, and the doll's character.
There is none of mine yet that are showing a lot of skin, but that is very possible to chance, if I get an OC who would not put on a lot of clothes, which could very likely happen. They're just dolls after all, so clothes or not, I ses no issue

    9. My dolls are dressed depending on the period they live in and/or their characters. My dolls from Regency London are all pretty modest, but that's because of the time period they live in. My fantasy dolls dress kind of randomly, which is fun.

I think you can dress them however you want to since they belong to you and they're dolls. They don't have to appear in public or go to real jobs, so if they want to be scantily clad, then that's okay ;)

    10. I find my iplehouse NYID has such a beautiful body and it is very curvy, I would even have her on display with no clothes at all. Its also easier to keep her nude since I sew clothes for her and need to test the fit on her frequently. But I moved back in with my very conservative parents and now she can't even wear half her outfits due to them being 'immodest'.

I did my best and dressed her in the most modest thing I have for her and my mom still found it inappropriate because her nipples sorta poked through her shirt :|

    11. Call me strange, I like dolls with jigglies and super long hair, and anatomically correct, maybe I'm repressed *smile* but I even sketch them that way, in see thru lingerie...
To the poster above, I did see an iplehouse girl, in a sweater, and I could still see the out line of her nibbies, I didn't think it was inappropriate, I actually thought to myself, that the sculptor was great, having captured, such realistic details.

If it bothered my mom, I would leave a doll out too, just to get on her nerves, but sadly, I have been blessed with a strange clan, who no doubt would also play with my doll.
My 78 yr old grandmother, still handsews for her own personal doll, and has absconded with two of my personal wigs as well..

    12. Personally I think it depends on the doll, all my boys have wardrobes to die for (the big ones!) but my puki family are almost always naked!

    13. I'm still waiting for my boy to get here, though I plan on more in the future. I think modesty would depend on the doll. Though I really love how beautifully sculpted their bodies are, so if I dress them modestly, it's only because the doll's character is modest. I love to admire everyone's photos with or without clothes, and in all types of clothing.

    14. While I have nothing against showing off a doll's figure, I intend to give my girl a small bust and ample clothing to avoid shows of cleavage and other things.

Personally, I don't feel that I'm defeating the purpose of her at all; I'm just not fond of the "sexy" look even if it's more on the conservative end.

Dolls can be pretty while being modest, and that's just the way I go about planning them.

I mean... I guess you can say the same for YoSD dolls? They don't tend to have much in the way of "figure", and dressing them conservatively certainly doesn't defeat the purpose of owning them.

    15. I have to agree with Tinker_Jet on this. I have nothing against showing them off, but for me the 'sexy' look doesn't suit my dolls in any way. Well there may be exceptions to that with one or two characters. :sweat

But again, it's entirely up to the choice of the doll owner whether they make their dolls modest or not.

    16. I think it's all to the owner. When talking about people, I find annoying a lack of "modesty" only if the place is not appropiate (i.e. really skympy miniskirt or boys (but also girl) with flip flops and shorts at school). Dolls doesn't have "appropriate" situation by default, they're created by their owner (i.e. according to their character, or the setting if they are in a diorama) so it's really up to him/her!

About my dolls, I prefer to display them only if they're "complete", with face-up, eyes, wig if needed and some clothing. I don't like to have them around naked, they seems neglected. I had my Dikadoll Mian Mian going around naked for a while, because he is a cute little asexuated anthro, but I found him cuter when dressed.
On the other side, I have a Dollmore Catish Reaa, Dahlia, that reveled herself to be more busty and curvaceous than I had guessed from the company photo, and even If I planned to dress her in a Victorian style (so really overdressed) now I want to show all that beauty and I'm working on some lingerie. Character-wise it's coherent (she was a courtesan) so I don't see a point to not have her in a revealing outfit.

    17. Agree. I bought dolls with perfect from my point of view bodies. Partly because of this perfection. I admire their creators' work. So why should i hide all this beauty? In many cases it is a crime!

    18. Well... my boys don't dress too immodestly, I don't suppose. Aside from box opening photos, the only doll to have a photoshoot with a lot of skin showing was Billy, and that was the farthest thing from sexy, since he's a tiny! He was dressed as Cupid for one shoot, but spends most of his time now in a big plush dinosaur costume. So... modesty issues solved?

Pete has spent a lot of time shirtless around the house, but that was because I didn't want his BRIGHT FUSCHIA shirt to stain his white resin. He doesn't have the ab-tacular body, though I do still think the less-ripped MNF boy bod is nice enough to show off, certainly. He doesn't mind showing off, at any rate, but he doesn't spend a lot of time out and about flaunting himself.

And Vince has had his clothing changed in public at meets before, I'm sure of it, but not way out in full view of non-doll folk, I tried to give him a little 'privacy'. He sits around naked when I'm sewing for him but otherwise... his biggest problem with decency is the fact that his denim shorts were for a teddy bear and I need to sew the tail hole up. (he did also get teased for being 'sexy' because he was in an oversized tee shirt that could be tugged down to show a little shoulder, but for the most part, when he's in shorts and sloppy tees, he looks like a kid in playclothes... Depending on wig and outfit, he ages up or down a little, and his character isn't a child, but most of the time his showing of 'skin' comes off as very innocent and not at all scandalous)

    19. I like to leave mine naked because he looks good that way... Aaaand mostly because I haven't really looked into getting him any new clothing. >____>

    20. I love the details of a sculpt body so its nice to see some skin ^^ i have more of a cutesy style in mind for my dolls so i dont think i will show too much skin in those types of outfits, but i love lingerie on dolls they look so beautiful <3
