Money on BJD Vs. Money on Self!!!

Jun 16, 2011

    1. It's not an addiction, first off (I know, you were joking, though). An addiction has to have withdrawal affects - such as excessive sweating, seizures, headaches...

But on to the question at hand: I am much more careful about my own clothes than my doll's; not because I believe that everything I buy is going to fit her (I'm super careful to make sure things might fit if I ever bought them for her, as BJD sizes differ); however, as a person, I have very strange measurements. I'm hard to find just about anything for, clothing-wise. Not that I'm picky, it's just that my measurements are anything but textbook. It's like I'm a walking oddity, lol!

There is a lot less worry with BJDs. Yeah, not every company cuts their clothes for all BJDs, nor do they make all BJDs the same, so I have to be on the look-out for stuff that might be entirely too small for a BJD of Emma's size. I'm not in the mood to spend a good chunk of change on something that might not fit... that's how I am with ordering my own shoes online. I just cannot do it, because my size changes with every brand, and most likely the shoe will not fit... believe me, clothing/shoe shopping for me is depressing. To top it off, I have a very strict set of guidelines to how I want things to fit.

With BJDs... not so worried, but I don't want anything too low cut (pants and shirts), or too high (skirt-wise). I like to know where things will fall, and if there's something I already own that might make this a manageable thing. Like, some BJD dresses that I feel are cut too short can look like a long tunic-type top when paired with some jeans or pants.

    2. I Already Had nasty habit of spending money on myself and now that my friend got me into BJD Dolls i seem to be spending more money on them then my self but. and once i see a doll i love i want to buy it and i would try and save up all the money i can. i also suggest if you want something for yourself and still want to get something for your doll there are websites that u can find to get coupon codes that will give u a certain percent off ur order some websites offer that u just gotta seach coupon codes for so and so i hope it helps.

    3. I think that when I buy things for my dolls, it's mostly for me to enjoying seeing them in the stuff. That being said, I do tend to view the expenses differently. I shop second-hand for myself, because new clothes prices drive me nuts, but for some reason, I don't have a huge problem with spending $30 on a doll wig. I guess since I sew custom doll clothes, I also take into account the extra time and effort that go into miniaturizing something and still having it look like the real thing.

    4. LOL@self abuse! I know what you mean. Since joining this horrible hobby
I've found myself saying far too many time "no, that could be DOLL money
instead.." But the truth is even when we buy dolls or doll items instead it's
still for US! It's just not OUR clothes or shoes......... as long as it makes us
happy and we aren't walking around in rags (at least not in public..) then it's
OK...right? :sweat And the bonus is that while our clothes & shoes wear out
our dolls items can look brand new for a long, long time. At least that's how
      I justify buying a $150 outfit

    5. @writerm I kinda know it's not an addiction (Health major) ^^;; I was only exaggerating my issue and like you said, I was just jking around.

Though, I do understand the difficulty some go through picking out clothes for there doll. Like, my DF boy. He have Line-A body and his shirt size seem to be more like 70cm even though he's only 62cm. His pant size is in between 70cm and sd13... It's really difficult to find clothes for him but I did some research on my own and was given some tips about where to get them.
I only boys do Idk how much about girls clothing but I do understand that I wouldn't want to wear skirt that are too long or too short ^^
I would have known easier that SD body are different by each company, before I spend over $100 on clothes that doesn't fit him ^^;; lol (I had to learn this the hard way.)

@EriChanHime I know what you mean by effort on miniature items. I think it's more difficult because of the scale. I really don't mind too much, spending $30 on wig a doll wig too, but it's a wig for a human(cosplay) I'll start thinking of reason as to Why I shouldn't get it. ^^;; See. This is the problem with me.

@Lula78 This strange. That's how I justify my spending to my subconscious too! In addition to, "well...It is technically for me. To use. On my doll! So it's okay!...right?"

    6. Haa~ This is totally true for me xD
Just the other day my mum said "You need to buy yourself some clothes, not just clothes for your dolls" Even though I make most of my dolls clothes xD
I don't like clothes shopping very much; and I'm very frugal with my spending money. I also mend my clothes when they get a hole in them, rather than throw it away and buy something new.
Somehow my brain says "It's completely okay to spend $350 on a new doll", but when it comes to me buying a new pair of jeans, or a new pair of shoes... Nah... xD I guess the dolls and their accessories are also 'for me' and my enjoyment; but sometimes it feels like they take on a separate space of their own, when it comes to my brain and spending money.

    7. My friend who got me into this mess--I mean--wonderful hobby! :sweat and I were having this discussion a few weeks ago. She said, her dolls dress better and their clothes cost more, etc. and I pointed out that she owned the dolls. You are spending the money on yourself. Although I noticed since I got my dolls, I spend more time in t-shirts and jeans, while they get more and more clothes made for them and my own sewing sits on the manikin catching dust.

    8. I do tend to do that... I would never spend over 100 dollars on anything for my self but I will buy tons of clothing and other things in one shot if it's for my dolls! However, If I enjoy getting that stuff for them it isn't really a problem... I just prefer to spend money on that hobby over other things.

    9. I find that I don't spend a lot of money on myself or my dolls (and like a lot of people here, the dolls equate to spending money on me). However, I am well aware that I come first. Floating heads can remain bodyless and dollies can sit around naked for all I care if I have bills to pay or if I -need- something for myself. And I don't really find it any easier to spend a lot of money on them than I do on myself. I make so little money that I am frugal on doll things and human things. It's been over a year since I bought something for my doll until now, when I ordered my floating head a body and ordered them both some cheap undies and a carrier. And it will probably be a long time before I spend anything on them again.

So, to summarize, no I don't really have the problem you speak of xD

    10. @Bandersnatch I understand completely what you're saying! It's the same with me! ^^ It's completely okay to spend like $300 on doll clothes, just not clothes for myself. I guess I do have a special place in my brain for doll clothes. In way, I think this is the Online Shopping Effect. I shopping online for my doll clothes, so this might be why I don't mind spending so much >.< but when I shop for myself, it's usually at an outlet, mall, or store, so after I see $50-$70 fly right out my hand, I'm done for the week! XD I tried shopping online once and I think I spend over $150 on one purchase. :sweat And that's why I don't shop online anymore for my clothes.

    11. I have always thought that spending money on my dolls was for myself. The dolls aren't demanding the clothes, wigs, etc. You WANT to buy them. I have started trying to sew clothes for my dolls instead of buying them online. I'm not good at it yet but practice makes perfect. I do have to buy the wigs and eyes and probably shoes because I can't make those. I made a decent shirt and pair of jeans for my doll and now my sister wants me to sew this and that for her. Dx

    12. I know someone who ate nothing but ramen so they could get a boob job done...

    13. Eh, I don't mind spending my money on my BJDs. I mean, that really does count as spending money on myself in my eyes because in the end I'm the one actually getting enjoyment out of the clothes, not the dolls.

    14. I heard those type of surgery can be risky, so I hope it when smoothly for her. I know someone who ate ramen or just white rice with dry fish since he had been working my grandpa's company and this other guy who work the same amount but go to the casino all the time. The guy who gamble had crappy house/car/ect while the other guy had nice things, reason why is obvious.

    15. This. My dolls are one of my therapies to stave off depression, and I consider them money well spent.

    16. Well, since buying abjd related stuff makes me happy, I technically am still spending money on myself -- the dolls just get to benefit from it to ;) I generally do spend a good bit more on their clothing than I do my own, but as a human being I can hit consignment stores, thrift stores, and discount stores that have neat stuff that I really like for very little money. That option isn't really there for bjds.

    17. I haven't spent money on clothes, make up (I used to buy these things like candy), shoes, accessories and more over the past year! And have been drastically slowing down on the purchases the year prior. I tell myself that I have all I need already and shouldn't waste money on impulse buys (so hard to do when I have to travel to the city everyday!) all for the sake of dressing my dollies properly and saving up money on getting bodies for my floating heads who are going to need clothes, and shoes too (or maybe get more heads!!!).

Also, as a few of you have said so far, BJDs make me happy too! They provide such joy and satisfaction. :D

    18. Friends and family have said that I spend more on dolls than on myself. u_u" But the thing is, I've never spent much on myself to begin with, so it just kinda exploded once I got into bjds and seeing how much things I could buy to customize them sorta turned addictive... it's just so much more fun buying for them because they can't complain about it! And when I see them wearing the things I bought, it makes me extremely happy and satisfied...so I agree with those above, in a way I am buying for myself because I own the dolls! :XD:

    19. Since my dolls belong to me, buying for them IS buying for me.
I know I just bought my Code no. 2 new boots - that were about $50 when I usually never spend over $30 on shoes for myself. I also bought him a super expensive wig while I aim for cheaper wigs for myself... but it makes me happy so I don't see why there would be anything wrong with it. It's like when a parents goes out and buys clothes for their child; it is something they want to do. Same thing with dolls, sometimes buying things for them gives a sense of pride (:

    20. @Tristiahna I feel the same way! ^^ I do aim to buy cheap things for myself from clothes to wigs. I don't normally spend over $30 but for my dolls, I just don't mind as much. I don't feel bad spending $70 on clothes for my doll as I would have if I spend it on a costume for myself! lol I guess to me, stuff that will be use on my doll are more important then stuff that will be use on me.
