natural face ups or fancy face ups?

Jan 2, 2013

    1. I think both are great. ^_^ Natural faceups are nice because they're so versatile and can go with just about any sort of look, so you can easily change up their style anyway you like at any time. They also tend to make dolls look more youthful and angelic. :3 I also really admire the bolder and more flashy sort of faceups too though, and I always find myself staring at them in awe due to either their eye-catching colors, the intricate details put into the faceup, or both! I do admit that sometimes though, the fancy faceups can be a bit limiting. My Serenade doesn't have a very natural looking faceup at all, and it makes finding clothes and wigs that suit her a bit more difficult, and I feel I have to be extra aware about which colors compliment her the best.

    2. I like natural face up more than the fancy one. I just like real human skin texture.

    3. I haven't done any bjd faceups yet but I've been practicing with similar size doll heads and seem to like the natural type more.Even if it's a female character I would probably go for bushy eyebrows, narrow and natural lips and some freckles on the skin. I've just had enough of fantasy dolls since they're the only ones I had as a child. :XD:

    4. I like fantasy faceups because I love makeup that is fancy, glamorous, and colorful. Only looking at it, though, since I don't have the patience or skill (or style, for that matter) to actually wear it. But that's what my dolls are for!

Of course the doll's faceup will depend on the character, but I do tend to make characters with dramatic makeup, haha.

    5. I prefer the natural faceup, but sometimes I see a fancy faceup that looks awesome, but I guess for the long run, a natural faceup will be the best. Change of outfits and wigs will satisfy my needs for variation from time to time

    6. natural face ups for me... if ever i want more i would just glue on gems on the side of face:XD:

    7. The default faceup on my Juri '05 actually has a large outline of a star around her right eye and had 3 rhinestones going down along her cheek... This old photo of it shows one of the rhinestones... They popped off too easily... I have a feeling that one in the photo isn't there any more. I have never even seen the white star show up in any photos! I've had this doll for over 10 years and I keep forgetting it's even there!!! (and she's had to have yellowed a bit--but it still doesn't show up!). So even non-natural faceups can look kind of natural...!

    8. I personally LOVE looking at the more fancy face-ups, but for my own collection prefer the natural looking face-ups. I like my dolls to look like they aren't wearing make-up even though they are. I think it's because I fear I would get sick of extreme colours on my dolls - I even shy away from bright red lipstick on my females and prefer more nude colours, Browns or light pinks. I'm scared of getting sick of something in my own collection that has too many colours for eye shadow etc.

I also think natural face-ups are more conducive to the types of pictures I like to take with my dolls, ie: nature walks, in bed, or just relaxing on the couch.

    9. I think it depends on the style of the doll and the look. I've seen amazing owner photos of bjds that pull off fancy faceups reaaalllyy well and others that look perfect and elegant with the natural faceup. It depends on the look you're going for the doll and how well the doll pulls it off I guess? haha :)

    10. I think I'd prefer natural

    11. I am partial to natural face-ups, although I like a bold lip color every now and then or a nicely applied eyeliner. Fantasy-based BJDs with corresponding makeups are also nice, as long as it helps bring the doll in character. What I am not fond of, though, is an over-abundance of gloss (especially on the lips). I've seen dolls that have what look like duck lips already because of it. :o

    12. I myself prefer more natural faceups, but I would say it really depends on the doll's character. Fancy faceups are lovely too.

    13. Definitely depends on the character of the specific doll but I do like and appreciate both types. I have both fancy and natural face ups in my collection.

    14. I'd prefer natural faceups for my own dolls, but I can't help but admire dolls with elaborate makeup/fantasy elements.

    15. I love both! I have a really natural face up on my Delf Miyu, and it suits her perfectly. I have a really stylized face up on my Kid Delf, and I really like it too! My Minifee Liria has glammed out face up, with penciled arched brows and red lips, and it suits her prefectly. 2 of my girls have company face ups that are very natural and they're pretty (Leeke does nice face ups). My Angel Elf Soo has the default face up but it's not at all natural, her lower lashes are dark purple, and she has yellow and peach eye shadow. It looks totally natural on her, so much so that the normal-looking face up on her twin (who sadly is just a head right now) looks strange! Darjeeling Aesthetics and Culur do some really nice fancy face ups and owner pics of them in clothes and wigs look great, not at all strange! The only thing I don't like is all blue face ups, with blue eye shadow, blush, and lips. I understand that the characters are probably ice creatures, but I'm just not a fan.

    16. I love fancy! It's... a little harder when your collection is made up of boys, I suppose, but nothing wrong with having a fancy man. For my LTF I did keep things neutral and natural, but having freckles was something that added detail and character while still being natural. With Vince, the first faceup I did on him was super pale except for his star-shaped 'beauty mark', because... well, I had no experience, mostly. But now that I've had more experience, I'm definitely looking forward to giving him different looks-- glam, scene, pastel... the sky's kind of the limit. And when Pete's due for a new faceup, he might get something a little Bowie-esque.

    17. I'm not fond of too natural make-up or very naturalistic make up showing the pattern i don't find nice in real people - too much red on nose, chin and forehead, whole face in freckles... but i know a lot of people find it nice so it's ok as long as everyone can choose they doll's look according to their own tastes. this means i don't find those dolls disgusting, i just don't want to have one of them.

I prefer half-natural in boys (a bit of shadow, lashes and liner on eyes, not too flashy, but definitely not brown color) with maybe some small bright fantasy detail like mark on cheek or eyedrip, but it's more about the taste for character design
I also like bright makeup sometimes, like creepish goth makeup (can't forget my goth teens lol) or something like that, it depends.

As for girls, it depends on character strongly, i can love everything from very natural makeup to full bright makeup.

    18. I prefer natural faceup

    19. I love both! For me, it just depends.

    20. Well I have a fantasy type doll, so definitely fancy >: D Getting a fancy faceup done on my girl and I'm trying to be patient waiting for her to be finished~
