1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

New Chinese Piracy

Mar 10, 2009

1. Wow. The audacity of this takes piracy to a whole new level. (aghast)

It's sad, but sometimes I feel people from China will do anything to get money. Anything from fake LV handbags to fake soy sauce, fake mooncakes, fake milk powder, and now fake dolls, all for the sake of money. I blame socialism. > ___ <

As one of Chinese descent myself I suppose I should be obliged to point out, however, that many Chinese doll companies still have the integrity to use their original designs. It would be a gross generalisation to say that all Chinese are rip-offs, pirates and cheats, and anyway it should be a matter of time before all real doll companies start taking action (as in legal action) on piracy and anything that encourages it.

Needless to say, they will have my full support.

2. A micrometer is a bit more special and precise than a ruler ;)

However in this case of toxic recast dolls, PayPal and eBay found in favour of the rip-off merchant. Even though the item that arrived looked nothing like the doll pictured, even though the smell emanating from the box was nasty and toxic.

It seems like the best way to cover yourself in these cases is to keep researching and researching and refuse to buy until you find positive reviews for the company. This sucks for new legitimate companies though, because you only get feedback through sales, and if people won't buy because of a lack of feedback, your business will die.

3. I cannot believe how people can steal and copy other companies' dolls without any guilt!
As I can read chinese, I go through some posts, and I found out they are kind of "proud of " themselves as a "piracy company".
They said they are doing this for "NON-Profit" and help people who do not have enough money to own a doll:roar
Also, they say even though they are piracy company, they will import material from Japan, so their copy dolls are safe to play.

I have to say, what a ridious and nonsense statement!:evil::evil:

It just like you STEAL other people properties and SELL it!
If they really want to help people who cannot afford dolls, they should go develop their OWN DOLL, and release for FREE!
I have no word to describe how angry I am.

Btw, they will transfer any word related to "copy right", "piracy","illegal" to "I love Moe..." something. Totally nonsense.

4. For extra information on other pirate companies:
1. LOLIDOLL : copying of volks and luts dolls
2. 萌人形': planning to copy soom dolls and over popular companies
3. 豪社: copies any doll as long as they have enough orders
4. Chiong dolls

I'm so disgusted by comments left by on their bbs, I started a thread in my local community's forum which I'll update with time, the list of pirate companies that we know or heard of.

5. that's scary...

6. I know what a micrometer is  I live with a lapidaries.... My point was that it would be near impossible and totally unreliable for people on opposite sides of the world (exaggeration) to take a measurement with a micrometer in the exact same place on a doll - lets say the thigh region for example, taking a measurement off one doll results in 42.71mm thickness anyone else measuring 1-2 mm in any direction is going to give a different reading.. resulting in:

*dramatic flair turned on for humorous effect*

"oh my gosh the doll I bought second hand from XYZ on DoA is a fake because there is .27mm difference in the thickness of the thigh to ABC who bought theirs from the company...."

See my dilemma with the measurement issue.... And I'm right there with you on the education and research!! Its our only defence against getting screwed by bootleggers, whatever country they are from!!

7. I'm going to try and keep an eye on this Taobao shop from now on... I want to know at least which dolls they're knocking off... :( I think it might help in any eventual discrepancies.

8. I also feel compelled to add to our friends and members from China who have commented here; its not you who is committing this atrocity, although you come from the same country you are not responsible and are a valued part of the "Team-Kick-Bootlegging-Ass-DoA" xox

9. The big difference here is the fact that he is physically REPAINTING the art. NO matter how good he is, there would be SO many natural differences from the original, that he can still call this his own. Now if he were printing OUT the art on canvasas, and then selling that as his own, it would be alot more similar to what this doll company is doing. Or maybe if he announced "Hey! make a list of paintings you'd like me to print out for you! I'll do it!" that would be alot more similar.

But if he's hand-painting duplicates of a famous painting from eye, then he is not going to make an exact duplicate, no matter how good he is, or how close it may seem.

10. A list of the molds they do would be useful for everyone. I would do it, but I don't have broadband so I'd be slow.

11. You'd be surprised how hard it will be to detect a fake from a real one, Chinese pirated goods may be cheaper in material, but when it comes to things like craft and appearance, it'll deceive well.
=( How sad, Just goes to show you should only buy from the company or people you trust.

12. Okay. One more store to avoid then. I will see if people in my circle in Japan is aware of this one.

As much disturbed by this Moe doll though, I find 豪社 (the the seller of taobao Unoa) placing the original and the copy side by side, and openly pointing out which is which to boast their quality as unsettling to the same level.

I think I might start listing my personal no-buy companies (LOLIDOLL, 萌人形, 豪社, Chiong dolls (thank you nariko_bisshi for putting this one up), DZ, dollmore, narin/narae) in my signature one day.

This is sad.

13. Okay, seeing as this problem is only going to get worse as time goes on (and the list of copied dolls is going to grow)... can the mods please sticky this? Or maybe make a sub-section of the forum for public awareness?

14. This thread doesn't need to be stickied, a list of banned dolls and companies already exists. People just need to get used to doing some research before they buy because the information and structure already exists, the list just needs to be updated from time to time.

15. I would think this should definitely be a sticky, and there should be a list. Isn't there already a do not buy from list somewhere on here?

*edit*

Yeah, I see the list on that link. But that list needs to be added to now.

16. This is just so very sad. It proves that a great deal of research is necessary before purchasing a doll.

17. @Jescissa: My mistake. I didn't know about that list. But I agree that it now needs to be updated.

18. The fact that you didn't know about it means that the thread isn't doing its job. The message isn't getting out to people...or people just aren't looking for the information to protect themselves.

Now that piracy is getting to be a blatant crime against every one of us rather than a back-door issue with dolls getting into the market undetected, as the doll market its up to us to keep each other alert and the best way of doing this is directing as many people as possible to the banned dolls and companies list and keeping that list as up to date as possible.

I think a great deal of research was always necessary before purchasing a doll. I did very little real research before I got my first doll and it was only through sheer luck that my doll wasn't a copy or bought from an unscrupulous dealer - my first doll came from eBay. Once I found out that eBay was one of the least safe ways of getting hold of a BJD I steered clear of looking for dolls on eBay and relied on the Marketplace here instead.

19. Normally, I'm a big bleeding heart for "Well, I can't afford it, so I'll buy a bootleg", but in the cases of collectors pieces (which you could DEFINITELY consider these dolls), it's just throwing money away. And it's almost like they're openly mocking Soom, which is even worse. :|

Ugh.
