1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

New or Second Hand For your First Doll

Oct 18, 2010

    1. I got my Ryu head secondhand... that was my first 'doll'. My first whole doll was band new. I have another used doll and 2 new ones on the way. I love my dolls no matter where they come from. It's really the buyer's preference.

    2. My first doll was new - I'd signed up to DoA, but didn't have marketplace access because I didn't feel right posting very much when I couldn't add anything really constructive, or say anything from first-hand experience. Plus, I wanted to know that the doll I had was "factory standard"; that it hadn't been damaged or improved upon by the previous owner at all, so I would have a blank slate to work from.

And he was brilliant. Loved him to bits. Ever since then, though, I've bought all of my dolls secondhand (Whether in bricks-and-mortar shops, or on the MP); I've not seen many new releases that've really caught my eye, and I prefer to shop by looking through the hodgepodge of companies represented in the marketplace than by picking through individual companies' websites one at a time.

I'd actually reccommend either of them for a first-time buyer; The extra communication involved in a marketplace sale, as compared to a straight-from-the-company one, is really reassuring, but on the other hand the knowledge that the product is going to be new and undamaged if you buy straight from the company is helpful too.

    3. My first doll is second hand and has arrived today. i was a little nevous as she was not new but she is perfect and i cound not be happier.

    4. If the new doll price vs the used doll price is about the same.
I say go for the New One.

If it's a lot cheap and I'm broke.... It depends. XD

    5. Well, my first doll(which is also my dream doll) shall probably be bought new, but as slow as my savings are going, I'll gladly take the doll second-hand if I have too. I'm really fine with both. :D

    6. I've bought six dolls since I started in on this hobby. Three new, three second hand. I actually ordered my first two dolls at roughly the same time; a Supia Roda new and a Migidoll Ryu second hand. There are pros and cons to both. With a new doll there's the fact that it is, obviously, brand new. It's untouched, you know it's history, it is pristine. There's something about opening a new box direct from a company that makes me really giddy. Cons are the wait times, sometimes communication with a company is difficult or vague. Wait time is the worst.

I find buying second hand though is really great especially here on the Marketplace, I've had great experiences buying and selling. The communication tends to be more frequent and clear, you can sometimes negotiate, and the doll comes WAY faster then from a company. Second hand is also fabulous for finding old dolls that are no longer made or are particularly hard to find. Downside is of course the doll is not always new. You sometimes have to deal with mods or damage or yellowing.

I guess it's all personal preference. What doll you want, how much you care about condition and wait times etc. I personally like doing both :)

    7. My first BJD was new but I wouldn't hesitate buying second hand. It would have been hard for me to buy second hand at the beginning as I didn't know enough and didn't know what questions to ask.

    8. My first doll was third-hand (I'm her third owner)
I felt safe adopting her from her second owner. he helped me a lot with everything, and when I had questions he'd walk me through it. xD

I dont mind buying second-hand dolls now either, but I prefer to take a personal look at them first. Feel their resin and match them and take a look at how they've been treated and such.

Now I have two second-hand and two new, and I don't mind either ^^

    9. My first was second hand, I was not ready to order a new doll from the company, my second one was second hand to, yeah. Still not ready for the company. My third was .. guess what, second hand but I have not got her yet so now I am waiting and perhaps getting ready to order next from a company :)

    10. My first doll (Domuya D1-30 Potpourri) is a second-hand, and I think I made the right choice. I was very eager to get my hands on one as soon as possible :) Very pleased with her still.

    11. My first doll was second hand.
The experience of buying her second hand wasn't a bad one either; she came as described and with a swimsuit to keep her decent.
I can't really comment on the difference between buying from companies and buying second hand as both my dolls are second hand as it stands.

    12. I bought my first (And currently only) second hand from a friend, don't regret it at all - w-

    13. I plan on getting my first doll New. I have a weird thought that she will be more mine that way. I don;t know if that sounds odd. Also I happen to love the full set (Outfit, wig, and face-up) that comes with the doll I have in mind. With that it is harder to find her that way second hand.

I mainly want my first one to be new, after that I think adoption would be nice. It has a lot of benefits such as a shorter shipping time, no customs, and can be less expensive (Due to the shipping and various things.) and since the people who are in this hobby love the dolls I assume that they are well kept, and in good condition.

    14. Whole of my dolls was new, when I bought them. But I wonder to buy from second hand from the marketplace.;)

    15. I've only ever had one, and it was bought new from the company Dolkot.

    16. My Soom Goss was a gift from a friend. He was never used or anything, just opened and admired c:

    17. my first doll is second hand because Freezia is sold out long ago.. everything is simple ) but I love my girl not less than if it was a new doll )

    18. I think this is a very personal thing. If you've got the patience, or really want a brand new doll that no one's ever touched before, then get one directly from the company.

I'm an impatient person, and I honestly don't mind getting a doll that someone else has played with. As long as they're in good condition, everything should be fine. I've actually had some luck with finding dolls being sold by people I know, or people who live in this country, so shipping isn't a problem at all. My first doll is actually third-hand, so she's been around for a while. :)

But sometimes resellers price the secondhand doll way higher than the original cost (regular Lati Yellows used to be $180, but I saw people in the Marketplace selling them for $400 or higher), so you have to weigh the pros and cons, and figure out how much you're willing to pay for the doll. Sometimes secondhand dolls are really overpriced (and sometimes even have damages), so you'd be better off ordering directly from the company. Some dolls may only be available secondhand, though (plenty of limited edition dolls), so you may not have much of a choice if that's your situation.

TL;DR If it's in good condition and at a reasonable price (for your budget), then secondhand dolls are a great thing! If they're not reasonably-priced (taking yellowing/damages into consideration), just buy directly from the company.

    19. I bought a new doll as my very first, but I have also bought a few second hand dolls. ^^

    20. I have bought both second hand and new and I was pleased with my dolls both ways. The nice thing about my second hand dolls is that they have very nice custom face ups. Since I am new to this, sending a head to a face up artist is a bit intimidating, so I got the custom without the worry.
