It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. New or Second Hand For your First Doll

Oct 18, 2010

    1. My first doll was new.. But I don't think I would have minded a second hand.

    2. I prefer to buy firsthand, and this was definitely went for my first doll. To me, it just seems a lot less risky to buy directly from a (reputable) company. You know that if anything breaks during shipping, the company has the option of sending you replacement parts (whereas a second-hand seller might not have that option), and you know that there won't be any potential surprises (like yellowing that a second-hand seller might have found 'mild' that you find 'extreme', or subtle damage to the face-up).

I also value being the 'first' owner of a doll. Even when I buy second-hand, I tend to prefer buying from people who didn't use the doll/head/parts much when they owned them (I own a lot of fantasy parts that were advertised as "these came with [doll], but they never suited his/her character, so they've just been sitting in the box since then"). I would never pass up a grail doll just for being 'well-loved', but I have to admit that if I had a choice between a slightly discounted second-hand grail or a brand new one at a slightly higher cost from the company, I'd go with the new one every time :sweat

    3. Just to be on the safe side, I want to buy first doll directly from the company. I'm familiar with the company I want to buy from, and I'd rather be the first one to own my doll. However, I wouldn't mind buying secondhand in the future for other dolls.

    4. Personally, if it's not a doll I want badly, and its not out of production, I'll probably lean more towards first hand from the company for the sake of my family's comfort, but if it's out of production, I'd probably buy it second- hand, or not get it at all if it's not my dream doll. Though, if I were out of the restraints of my family, I'd probably buy second hand due to it saving me some money, and that I love even mellow yellowing on dolls.

    5. When I was buying my first doll I didn't know that you can buy secondhand bjd :? So yes, she's from company ;p It was saver, I think.

    6. Mine is secondhanded I'm her 3rd owner. She went through a lot of abuse and I had to be the one to buy her to love her. And now I'm saving for a new doll to be her brother

    7. I bought mine new, but only because I couldn't find him second hand. Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic, but I think that second hand dolls still have emotions attached to them from their previous owners and so they are more 'alive' (because they have back stories of some kind? IDK, I just think that way...)

    8. I bought mine new, but through a dealer in my own country. Best of both worlds, in a way.

    9. My first doll was new, but I wouldn't bat an eyelid at buying a second hand doll.
I aquired most of my other collections that way, so I don't see how a doll would be any different...not that I've seen any of the dolls I want for sale anywhere. I wonder if it's because the sculpt is less popular generally, so people who buy it really like it. Plus I always like giving something a new and loving home :)

    10. My first doll was second hand, and I love him to pieces! If you find a sculpt you love, and it's a good reputable seller than secondhand is a good way to go!~

    11. Seconds for my part : I was afraid I would not like the end and I did not buy anything too expensive so I was not about me. In addition I am not patient and I was afraid to order the sites while I had never heard of before.

    12. Mine was new, and I would defintely recommended buying firsthand for your first doll. It's a lot less stressful I think, and prevents accidental purchase of a recast which is always bad, but I think it would be particuarly devastating if it was your first ever doll.

I would also say unless you are particularly interested in doing the faceup yourself (or you know someone who can do it for you) I would also recommend getting the default faceup, again to save stress mostly!

I will probably do this for most if not all of my future dolls, I only bought my second doll secondhand because it was a limited and therefore the only way to get it. Despite the evidence that my doll is real (I have the box, the certificate, there's company markings inside the head, I've compared her to pictures online) part of me still worries about it. But as you may have gathered, I'm a slightly paranoid person who doesn't handle stress well!

    13. I prefer new ones, for some reason I cannot seem to bond with anything I have received second hand, call it doll, object, clothes, whatever. I keep thinking it is some one else's. and In the particular case of bjds I think most people sell their second hand dolls equally priced than new ones, or higher.

    14. i bought my first one new:) wanted to have the feeling that i was the first owner( and last). opening the original box and unwrapping it ect

    15. Prefer New, maybe I'm more satisfied with it ^^

    16. I dont really like 2nd hand for anything and everything its just a preference. My first doll was new

    17. My first doll was second hand, because of price. But, I really really love him, and would do it over and over and over.

My second doll is going to be second hand too. I love the idea of giving love to a doll that may not have gotten it before. I think of it kind of like reincarnation, and that aspect even fits into the characters that I'm making the dolls to be.

At this time, I'm really thinking of only buying second hand dolls. I already do a lot of thrift shopping and I can still bond with the doll.

Since money/cost is a problem, this also works out really well.

    18. It does not matter to me, most important is I like the doll

    19. I'll be buying my first girl new - I wouldn't consider secondhand even if I found one in perfect condition from a reputable seller. I don't think I could stand anything going wrong, and there's less room for things to go wrong (and more room for resolution if they do) when buying new...

And I have such a defined character for her already that it would feel strange for her to have already belonged to someone who might have given her a completely different personality. Better for me to have a blank slate, I think.

    20. I am awaiting my first doll as we speak, and she was bought brand new.
