1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

New or Second Hand For your First Doll

Oct 18, 2010

    1. I can't wait to be able to buy a second hand doll. I bought my first new and would love to buy more new, but the cost and time it takes is not my favorite thing. I'm so glad to read that second hand is quicker. I am an anxious person, who hates waiting. :fangirl:

    2. For me, I tend to stick with fresh, new ones. Most of the time, I tend to get really paranoid about getting a bootleg.

    3. It depends entirely on what my budget is and what I can find. I'm leaning towards buying new, but if I see them up for sale in the market place I'm not going to reject them for being second hand. Of course, I also intend to modify my dolls a lot.And I don't know if it counts, but technically my first dolls are the ones I'm making myself.

    4. I went for new as it would take even longer for me to wait for a Tiny Delf Centaur secondhand, and I wouldn't be getting the very specific one I ordered as they had lots of options ^^. Yes to secondhand for dolls who have been around for a bit, but I prefer new for special/limited releases :).

    5. I love both. I got dolls who are new and ones who are second hand and my new Yo-SD is brand spanken new from the company...On layaway from Resinsoul exactly how I want her and nothing I don't want. I also gotta be real careful buying second hand since I have real bad allergies...And I keep hearing about the New Resin smell.

    6. My first doll was secondhand however she was essentially new. I bought her off ebay however the seller was/is a member of DOA and she cane with all certificutes. Anyway the seller essentually had a brand new doll hadnt done anything with her and just keft her in the box. It was a grear expirience and it was awesome having a brand new doll without dealing with a company. I loved the communication we shared after where I coukd send her photis of how the doll was coming along.

Since then ive only purchased a handful of dolls from the company, most came from the marketplace. I love buying from either/or. The marketplace has advantages such as short wait times, communication before, during and after, and the possibility of trading. Buying from the comoany also has advantages of having a brand new doll, brand new perfect faceuo ect.

    7. My first doll is going to be brand new, but I'm considering second-hand for future dolls.

    8. For some reason I have a feeling that the first doll is very special and therefore it has to be mine and mine only :D But that's only how I feel and I can be quite sentimental at times. I do plan to buy second hand later though :)

    9. My first on topic doll, my Dikadoll Mian Mian, was bought new, but from a reseller. So I had to wait only a month, the time for the shipped box to arrive from China. My very first doll was bought used, and she eventually become two dolls (I used her head on a different body and her body with a different head), and I'm really bond to them even in this way...
For me there is no difference between new and used, outside the practical aspects, even for your first doll. If I like a specific doll and it's easier to get her new, I'll get her new; if I found a doll that I like to have in secondary marketplace, I'll get her/him from here.

    10. I bought my first doll second-hand. I was saving up for him, and I checked the marketplace one day, and he was there! I had been planning to buy him from the company, but the user that was selling him was much closer, and he was in perfect condition. It was a dream come true!

    11. Currently, I'm looking at getting my First (and Also my Grail) doll new, but if I can find them on the marketplace for cheaper or more reasonable and I'll get them secondhand. But so far it seems I haven't been able to find many owner pictures or posts about someone owning a souldoll Nino. Then again, I don't have marketplace access yet.

    12. Both...Too long waiting time for new one so I had to buy a second hand one while waiting.

    13. My first doll is secondhand. I think it really depends on what you desire, if you are stubborn on getting a new doll, then the wait is deserved. But if you want to grab the doll very soon, then secondhand would be a nice choice. Believe it, most of the doll owners take good care of their beloved dolls, it won't become an obstacle to get a secondhand one ;)

    14. I bought my First doll new, then 2 months later I bought my second doll secondhand. I love them both either way.

    15. Haven't gotten my first doll as of yet, but I'm saving up for a new doll. I would buy second hand, but I'm not sure if the experience of getting my first doll would be the same! Like when you first open the box and you see the doll in with his or her pillow and *sigh* I can't wait!

    16. I bought my first doll used. I am too impatient when it comes to a new hobby to have bought a new one, it would take way too long to arrive! And she came in such perfect condition and with all her papers so I still got the excitement of opening her up for the first time :)

    17. It really depends on which doll you want as your first doll :)

If it's a doll that you can only buy second hand and she or he is in good shape then why not. It's better to get something that you really want vs getting a new doll from a company just because it's new.

    18. I wanted to make sure i'd like bjds first before shelling out several hundred, so I bought a cheaper doll from Junkie Spot. It was really awesome and I even gave her a faceup which turned out great! I didn't get too attached though, so I ended up selling her and making a little profit because of the clothes, accessories and faceup. If you're new to the hobby, I'd suggest doing the same. Especially if you plan to do the faceup yourself. It's great practice without the fear of painting an expensive doll.
As for secondhand, as long as the doll is in the condition you're comfortable with, that's also a good option. They might already come with a faceup, clothes, a wig and shoes, which can get pretty pricey when putting together a doll from scratch.
Denverdoll and Junkiespot are great for fast shipped dolls. If you buy secondhand, even if it's across the globe, it's going to get to you faster than from a company. So I would say, find out which doll you really want, see if it's available from your country first, then go to secondhand options. Either way is good, but always check feedback. Even from a store!

    19. As I am planning my first doll, I have looked at new ones. But I would have to say I would prefer to buy second hand.

    20. I feel like I want my first doll new, but in the future I may want one secondhand. This is mainly because of my fear of bootlegs.
