New or Second Hand For your First Doll

Oct 18, 2010

    1. My first bunny is new but for me the important thing is to find exactly what I want, I do not care if it is new or second hand;)

    2. I was thinking about getting my first brand new but i must admit that, after reading your comments, i'm not slightly divided between both. I have, however, no idea of what dolls are offered here second hand and what the price range is but i will check the sales forum when i have permission and decide later on.

I always dreamed about the "opening box process". How that that work when you buy second hand?

    3. My first was one I put a looot of planning and care into creating, and he had to be new so I could get him just as I wanted him.

I would probably buy a used doll though. I prefer new things but used is cheaper and can come clothed, whereas new dolls are nude and sometimes eyeless and wigless.

    4. I don't think 2nd hand would have bothered me at all for my first doll. It is just that the dolls i wanted were not at all available that way and I wanted them to be 'PERFECT' so I thought I would save myself any aggravation and order them brand new! I have not regretted that for one minute.[IMG]

    5. Bought all three of mine new from the companies. Considering my first was an Abio Angel, brand new was a lot cheaper than I could get most others from used. But, you want to really like the doll too, not just go for price. I am always worried about things not going through properly when buying from other than a company. I don't have paypal though, so that makes things much more complicated when buying second hand.

    6. I think it's ok to buy second hand dolls if they're not used too much and seem new, btw for my favorite dolls (realpukis) I will be lucky to find them so new or used I'll take them :P

    7. I thought new would be best for my first doll, and I planned to buy an Abadon(my first) new from Luts. But I found that Abadon looked much better as a Super Senior rather than a Senior Delf. So I bought an Abadon head by itself second hand, since that was the only way I could.

    8. My first dolls were new. But I also own second hand dolls. Most of them are in a very good condition, but there is always a risk. I've got an AOD Chen from ebay. The foto looked good, very well done foto...., no mistake seen, but as he came home he was in a very bad condition. Yellowed, dirty, not to love. I had to clean him completely, remove a very bad faceup, restring. I srcupped the face for hours, because there was a very strange color used. I modded him, so now he is a cute guy, but I think if he had been my first doll, I would have been very disappointed.

    9. I am planning my first doll purchase to be a new one. However, I am looking for suitable used dolls already so, should the right used doll show up, I may own used before new.

    10. I really want a brand new doll but life keeps getting in the way to the point where I might have to look for a second hand doll. If I can find the doll I'm in love with second hand and he's in good condition, who knows?

    11. I think it's fine either way, I wouldn't mind at all my first being a second-hand, but alas, she was a LE and I wasn't on DoA at the time, so I got her brand new from the company <:

    12. I like to do both! I really like buying second hand because you don't have to wait as long, and the shipping prices aren't that expensive. And, you can sometimes get a good deal for doll with some accessories, or an awesome faceup/mod. But then again, I have had some issues buying dolls second hand. Dolls have come to me in worse condition than I expected, and that really irks me. But I also love purchasing dolls new because you normally don't have to worry about any defects, and just knowing that the doll is YOUR doll and only yours with your specific style is just so great. :) The excitement builds while you wait for your doll, and when you get them it can be such a great experience! But of course, there are the shipping costs which are usually a lot higher. There is also when you buy a doll you think you will love, but then you get it and it is not what you wanted at all. I have had that happen to me before, and it is a total bummer. :< I mean, of course you can experience any of these things regardless of whether you buy new or second hand.

    13. I don't think it is a bad thing to buy second hand. Why not love a doll that someone else doesnt want anymore? Also you get what you want and save some moolah. win win

    14. I got my first (wow, is it really six years now?) second-hand through Yahoo!Auctions HK. This was back when they didn't charge a fee for putting up an auction so there were lots of BJDs there. Mine was a DOC Hoo. I'd considered getting him from DOD but then I heard all about how there was at least a 6 month wait back then from the local doll forums... so I search for a second hand one instead.

And since HK is really a very small place, it was possible for me to meet face-to-face with the seller to check the doll thoroughly before paying for him so it was really less risky than getting him brand-new. (This is the usual practice for buying expensive items from Yahoo!Auctions HK.)

Since then I still regularly look for dolls there or on the local forums (again I usually meet up with the sellers) and my brood now consists of second hand dolls and ones I've ordered directly from the doll companies.

I still don't dare get a doll from the MP here though as it feels so much riskier than getting them locally, plus there are shipping fees etc.

    15. well my first was new but i wouldnt mind buying a doll second hand in the future. i like the idea of adopting a preloved doll. <3

    16. My first doll was secondhand, but it had nothing to do with the fact that he was my first. I was going to buy him brand new, but I found him in the marketplace and I loved the modding that the previous owner had done to him (they opened his eyes up slightly) not to mention that the faceup was exactly what I had in mind and I obviously wasn't going to be getting it from the site.

I have nothing against secondhand dolls as a whole, I would just make sure the seller is accurately describing the damage (or 'love') that's been done to the doll. For those unsure about the hobby, but wanting to try it out, a secondhand doll may be just what they need if said doll is priced low enough. That way they don't give into temptation of buying a cheaper doll brand new that they don't actually like as much. (Or they could just save money and be patient, but you know~ lol)

I still love my boy to bits and I don't regret buying him secondhand. I think he was a great first doll. Knowing that someone else loved him before me (to an extent, they said they had bought him and hardly played with him at all) doesn't make me love him any less. In fact, I almost feel special that I was the home he wound up in. That I had the privilege of taking a doll who had been sitting in a closet his whole existence and was able to put life back into him.

    17. My first doll, a Soah from Elfdoll, was new and direct from the company in Korea. For me the long wait and the anticipation that comes from waiting to open the box and see her face just added to the whole wonderful experience of my very first BJD - the very first resin doll I had ever seen in the flesh. :)

Since then I have also bought second hand and I love my second hand girl just as much as my new ones but I am glad my first was a new doll. :)

    18. I'm still considering both options for my first doll.

If when the time comes that I'm ready to purchase, I can find the right doll for the right price secondhand, I'll go for it.

If I don't find the doll I want or there's no significant price difference between new and used, I'll buy new.

I'm willing to take either option, depending on how things shake out at the time, and I'm sure I'd love my doll either way. :)

    19. My first doll is secondhand. Layaway via the marketplace :P
Even the head and the body are bought from different seller. No choice though, since I like a LUTS mold that is no longer sold, and I want a different body from the original *weird combo, SDF head on SSDF body, but that's the combo I like...*

Just perfect, in my opinion :D

New is good, but sometimes pricey *except for limited doll, which the secondhand usually have higher price, though* And just like the fellow members here, we have to be extra patient until the manufacturing of the doll is finished...

    20. I made my first purchase, in a new limited edition Head, but my first to be homed Doll, was a re-homed Mercpuid that i ADORE.
