Not Wanting The Beautiful's

Sep 20, 2008

    1. A lot of the Luts dolls are like this for me. I love their sculpts and think they're very beautiful, but their features lean more towards the anime-ish side instead of the realistic side, and that's just not for me. Many of the Soom monthlies are like that also. I loved Heliot and Amber, and thought they were drop-dead gorgeous, but they just weren't for me.

    2. For me, it's a case of being oversaturated by idealization/flawlessness. IMHO, one facet of "beauty" is distinctiveness, and there is just so much loveliness in BJD faces out there that faces lose distinction and start looking all the same in my eyes. Take Volks -- I think Volks makes some of the most beautiful doll faces around! But I also think there's a kind of homogeneity to them, and no sculpt is really drawing me in now. And whilst Soom's and LUTS's sculpts are also attractive, they leave me cold. :sorry

My criteria for choosing dolls now is: "OK it's attractive, but am I responding to it?" It doesn't matter how beautiful/not beautiful it is... it has to call to my heart! I like DoD's Lahoo because he's somehow different from all the other boyish-male sculpts in my eyes -- I think it's his mouth and eyes that are distinctive. OTOH I also find myself drawn to Crobi Lance; I can't say what's distinctive about that face, but regardless I'm drawn to that sculpt.

Beauty's a pretty subjective thing, so whilst I think many sculpts are very attractive and idealized, the sculpts which my heart is drawn to, those are the ones "beautiful" to me. :)

    3. This. I have differing tastes, of course, but this is basically my stance. The dolls that are too close to BJD "perfection" all look the same to me. I almost choose my dolls based on uniqueness of face, really- For instance, Soom Lazule is gorgeous, but I wanted a Lupin because he doesn't have those exact traits that make Lazule so pretty. To me, Lupin's face had more life and character.

    4. I don't think it has anything to do with beauty, I think it has to do with the ability to create character. Even some anime-inspired sculpts can have a lot of personality, like the Volks old F-07 or Cerberus Project Ari Wink.

    5. Iplehouses EID collection as well as many other sculpts with a realistic look. I love looking at them, but they really donยดt fit into my crew as theyยดre more stylized (luts, fairyland, soom and so on).
I also like Soomยดs mecha angels but anything above 70cm is too tall for me. Pipos is another company I adore, but I canยดt imagine really buying an anthro.

    6. Soom Beryl for me.

    7. Honestly, I can't really say that I've ever encountered a doll that I thought was really beautiful and didn't want to own! I think that I have a lot of personal levels of beauty, but it's when a doll crosses into the very higher levels that I want to buy it--each doll is beautiful in their own way, but I only want to buy the ones that I find most beautiful! ^__^

I also haven't decided that there are any sizes I really dislike yet, so I have no reasoning in that department either. XD

    8. That "too tall" part explains me and Larten (A characther who was supposed to be next on my list... *looks at siggy, sees waiting doll* :sweat ) However I want him as MSD (I'm afriad a SD will my my girls look to childish, when they are 17 & 19 ). I keep seeing all these amazing boys that I want for him, but they are all SD. :...(

    9. Volks Four Sisters mold is one I'd never own, but I'm always glad to see those my friends own.

Ok, except for the Yo-SD 4 Sisters; she/they entirely ambushed me. I still don't own one, but she is really cute; I could see myself owning her.

But there are entirely too many dolls I'd love to own; I can only be grateful that there are some, however lovely or otherwise interesting, that I am Not attempting to buy.*_*

    10. I wouldn't want any LE, Monthly, or some special edition kind of doll since I'm finicky and a little indescisive. I might admire it's beauty when I get it, but a few months down the road, I might want to change it's wig or eyes, or something, and I think that wouldn't be fair for those who also loved the doll and didn't get it.

Also, really large dolls. Too hard to carry with you. (Found this out when tasked with carrying a friends 60CM BBB Apollo. He's gigantic, and a bit heavy.) I keep finding myself most attracted to the tinies, anyway.

    11. This could happen one day because I would definitely prefer a doll that has a special 'something' over a gorgeous one.

    12. Most people who get LE, Monthly, or special edition dolls change their wigs and eyes and some even change the face up. Most doll owners like to see what can be done with these dolls as well.

    13. Very true on this~ I never see a limited, even a fullset, as is. I sometimes love fullsets if they have great outfits/wigs that I can spread around my other dolls but I've never kept a doll 100% default. I may keep the faceup, but the eyes, wigs, and clothes are a no-commitment problem. It's all in how the sculpt calls to me. Sometimes LEs are the only way to get that perfect face.

Now, there are some dolls that I think are neat, like the Soom Monthlies, but I have no idea for myself what I'd do with a doll with hooves and horns and all that. I love seeing what people do with these dolls, but that's definitely a case where I feel like it's better off in someone else's hands.

    14. My dolls are all meant to be shells, so there are plenty of dolls out there that I love or think are gorgeous, but won't get because they don't suit any of my characters =w=

Every doll I consider buying is being looked at first for which character of mine they would best portray. For example, I love CP LUTS Senior Delf CIAN, but I'll never get him because, besides the fact that he's limited, he doesn't suit any of the characters I have =w=

    15. It's Luts dolls for me. They are very beautiful, I like to admire their photos, but I never feel desire for buing them.

    16. Actually, I've sold a number of my "beautiful" dolls as I've realised that I'm drawn more to quirky, expressive, emotional faces rather that simply pretty dolls. While I can certainly appreciate the beauty of those dolls, I no longer feel any need to own them. The doll must speak to me, create a reaction. That's not to say that I don't have some purely beautiful dolls but even those have certain amount of character to their faces.

    17. If I bought every doll that I thought was sexy, beautiful or cute, I would be possibly be in debt and the whole house will be uninhabitable because of the sheer number of dolls that would occupy every inch of it. ;)

That being said, I choose my dolls and their things like I'm about to step on a landmine. I sometimes find it inconvenient when the dolls and things are limited in time or quantity but I believe that if I truly desired the doll or item it would come around to me eventually.

    18. I have a tendency to want almost every doll I see :sweat In fact I have a wishlist of almost 40 dolls... and it changes almost daily. I'm constantly changing my mind about which doll is for me and which isn't >___>'' Especially since I don't use dolls to shell characters. I usually make up characters depending on the character I see in the mold. And because of that it's hard to be all "Y'know this doll is great but not for me so I'm gunna sell it"

There are quite a few dolls I do love but I know I just will never own... Sards and Dias and Beryls, Unoas, Elfdolls, Dollmore Model dolls... no because of size, that doesn't bother me, I just can't see myself with them... naraes, limwhas, zaolls, pipos, pukis... most tinies, too. I'm just more of a sd and msd kinda gal.

    19. A lot of the Model doll faces are just too... nice. And EIDs. I think they're gorgeous, but I don't like things to be too beautiful.

    20. There are a lot of dolls I find indescribably beautiful, but that I'd rather admire from afar. Personally, it's not the looks of a doll that really matters to me, it's more of whether it speaks to me - whether I see a character of mine in the mold, or it's overflowing with personality and a certain expressiveness that I just have to bring him/her home. There are dolls that I happen to like and find really pretty, but are plain and uninteresting to some. I think in the end, it's really a matter of taste/personal preferences, because we all have different standards of beauty.
