1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Obsessed with another owner's doll?

Sep 16, 2005

    1. Quoting from way back on the first page of this thread:

Kaitou was the very first BJD I ever saw; the one that got me into the whole hobby in the first place. It would be fair to say that yes, I got pretty obsessed over him; I even signed up to his fan mailing list. :sweat Thanks to Kaitou, I discovered the world of BJDs.

I fell in love with another El - Nezumitoo's Fuan; and Kaitou and Fuan were the reasons why I decided I would never get an El myself. I was afraid that subconsciously I would turn him into either Kaitou, Fuan, or - even worse - some sort of bastardised offspring of them both. So I admired Kaitou and Fuan, but my collection expanded in other ways (including an awfully large number of Shiwoos that only go to prove just how dolls of the same mold can look so radically different; I have 3 Type 1 Shiwoos and 2 MNFs, and they all look strikingly different - and also different to every other Shiwoo out there!).

And then KisakiSama decided to sell Kaitou, and gave me first refusal. She said she didn't mind if I kept him as Kaitou; he arrived with his face blank, but still with his tattoos.

I've redone his face-up as Kaitou, but in my own style; and since arriving here his name has become shortened to Kai. Kaitou is who he used to be. He's not quite the same; and I'm very happy with him. I couldn't have hoped to recreate his character as Kaitou, because Kaitou was KisakiSama's character, not mine - but as Kai, he is mine. He is a different character to Kaitou, and I'm glad - because whilst I loved and adored Kaitou as a character, I couldn't hope to recreate that character myself; it wasn't mine, and any attempt to recreate him would just have been a shallow copy. I allowed Kai to become himself.

Other dream dolls may be out there, but I don't feel the need to obsess over them; I still admire and adore Nezumitoo's Fuan, but I would never seek to clone him. It wouldn't be Fuan, for a start.

I think it's healthier to admire others' dolls than to obsess over them; one of the reasons we become attracted to certain dolls is the personality and time invested in them by their owners. All the dolls named through this thread are ones with a well-established character that shows through clearly in the doll's personality. That isn't something you could ever recreate; you are not the original creator.

To be honest, it's the difference between writing fanfic and the author's original characters. If you have the skill and originality to write fanfic well, why not invest that skill into original characters of your own? The same goes for dolls. Instead of trying futilely to recreate someone else's doll, let an original character come to life instead. Let the doll tell you who he or she is, instead of trying to turn them into someone they could never be.

    2. I am greatly in love with Skymble's Gavin, I just continuously cuddle him and tell him I love him. XD

I also love Sharuya's baby that she's selling the head of. v-v I've fallen for her, but I cannot afford her at the moment and it breaks my heart that she still does not have a home. I've been watching her since I got marketplace access...

Saragato's Devika has stolen my heart too .o. She's adorable!

Same with cutekittami's Snug! I love their little photostory things. :3

Gennii Drominda's Jay Say is so pretty! She does amazing photostories too.

    3. I have dolls that I LOVE to look at, but I'm not sure I'd say I 'obsess' over them... I just check in on them regularly~
Lennie owns some of the most amazing dolls in the world. I never get tired of seeing them~ <3
I adore Jinmay's kids. xD They're just so cute! ^-^
      I also absolutely love Phantasmagoria's dolls. They're amazingly gorgeous~ :D
Aquaspiral's dolls are so incredably beautiful! They take such stunning photos of their kids~
I also completely love Malice and Karlyle, who belong to Kurr.
Ari-chan owns some seriously awesome dolls. I love 'em to death.

    4. Yes! I love Hiritai's Hayden.. He's just so stunning!
He's the reason I'm into BJDs and got a MD Ryu :3

    5. One of my friend who introduced me to BJDs have stunning Madoka collections... I'm so obsessed with her dolls. They are so pretty and each one are so unique even tho their faces are same. Faceup of course does a lot to differentiate them, but I think their individual unique stories and moods make each of them more and more stunning.

    6. Honestly, I don't really follow anyone's dolls that closely....I'm kinda wrapped up in my own sweeties, and my RP forum...I think it's awesome that so many people have so many dolls that inspire others that way though ^-^
However, while it's great that other people's dolls spark so much love in others, I think the hobby is waaaay more about you loving your dolls then anything else- I mean, my boys aren't super fancy or anything, and their faceups are all done by yours truly so they are still a little amateurish, but I love them anyway, and more then anything, that's what I get out of this- loving my guys and watching their characters develope. :D

    7. LOL I agree this this one here. Though I must say my obsession has calmed down... a lot from how it was about 7 months ago, when I first found him.
He is the fist BJD I saw, and the reason I decided to get a doll.
But sadly getting a Ryu is near the bottom of my list. TT.TT
Really I just tend to be a River (here on DoA) and Hiritai fanatic. Every one of their dolls, and their photography, amaze me. Though of course I squeel over some dolls more than others.

    8. I get close to sculpts and faceups but never wigs. Wigs are always going to be there, but sculpts mixed with the perfect "faces" will make you a fangirl/boy. Hgata's (spelled right?) Zoe is a HUGE inspiration when it comes to my doll. I adore her faceups, but I know when to draw the line. Jaszi is my own doll, and my first faceup is something I created based on inspirations of other dolls and their faceups. Granted, yes, I'm not too happy with her current faceup, but that's why trial-and-error was created ;)

    9. Oh, gosh. I've come across so many amazing dolls on this forum. I'm in awe of owner's creativity and skills, but obsessed is going to far. I definitely stare and appreciate, but I don't really go back to see something over and over again.

    10. I get close to sculpts, and I like to cuddle my friend's dollies, but not to the point of obsession. I've never bought a dollie based on another dollie I liked. In fact, for Elis and Ethan, I absolutely disliked the faceups on other dollies of the same sculpt, to the point where I decided that he needed an absolutely gorgeous faceup -_-

    11. Me too..love a Lati White Belle that my friend own because of the face up. Fortunately..she said she would love if I too get a Belle that have the same face up. :)
But that's a rare case..usually I fall in love with the company default face up..haha..
And I think the reason my friend let me is because she is not the person that like to make a story for her dolls..she sees doll as doll

    12. On Flikr I Loved aEthEr hEad's Volks Liz named Michelle. I do love that sculp but she really made it unique by giving it a moody and androgynous look. <3

Also on Flikr I adore Jeni Bunny's Elfdoll Yumi named Maya.

    13. I'm another Hiritai's Hayden fan. XD Mind you, I don't think I'll buy a MD Ryu. The energy she pours in to Hayden is something I couldn't replicate and, honestly, I think its one of those 'best left at a distance' things. Sides, I pour all my energy in Anna. Bespite being a BIG Hayden fan, my Anna's #1 to me. :)

    14. Maybe not a specific doll, but I've loved Migidoll Ryus ever since I first saw one, and I've wanted one of my own ever since, too. But I'm kind of afraid that if I buy him, he won't be as I imagined... not as 'good' as I hoped... and that would be so horrible!

    15. Owner's pictures can be very deceiving, there's just so many variables including the lighting, environment, faceup, wig, eyes...
I used to browse flickr and go crazy about some dolls, now i'm cured (at least I hope so) I can admire without wanting to have a clone of it on my shelf and things are better this way XD

    16. I never really get the urge to own the dolls that I admire. Some of these dolls are almost like celebrities within the BJD community and I know that a lot of the dolls' "persona" comes from how their owners present them and the stories the owners make about them. The owners of these "celebrity" dolls are the ones who create the magic, not the dolls themselves.

    17. The first doll I ever fell in love with was hiritai's Hayden, (Back when he was still in WS and had his old faceup), and in my head that's almost exactly how I want my boy Ian to look, which is unfortunate. I don't want people to think I'm copying, because Hayden and Ian do have a lot of differences, in character and in color scheme, but is it still copying? Hayden's old eyebrows are the exact right shape for Ian, but if I ask for someone to paint those eyebrows, will I be copying? I feel bad, but I can't change the way Ian looks in my head!

    18. I loveeeee Tsukidol's ooak AIL Alice by SDink (not sure what the dolls name is!) There was some crazy bidding on eBay for that doll, so glad it ended up living with a DOA member ox

    19. OMIGOSH I was completely obsessed with someone's Tan luts el that was a dollup of Tom Kaulitz. It was the most gorgeous doll on the planet to me XD But I got over it, and I would never copy someone's doll ever, I would feel too bad ;_;

As for people I personally know, they would most likely think I was obsessed with their dolls because I just love dolls. All of them. I just love love love dolls in general so I love playing with them XDDDD

    20. There are way too many lovely dolls on here that have caught my eye...too many to mention! I will say though that seeing pics of Sher's Juniper Snowpea is what made me fall in love with Notdoll's Nari-Pons.
