Obsessed with another owner's doll?

Sep 16, 2005

    1. mmm i am sooo guilty. i fell in love the MD ryu sculpt because of another bjd collector, who is also on deviantart. i ended up finding lots of other photos of md ryu's that i love as well but this particular person is very active in taking pics of their dolls and is very dedicated to them. not to mention they are really popular probably because of their talent in photography among other things.

hmmm i feel embarassed to say this but at some point i stopped looking at this other artist's work because i did become jealous of how loved their work and dolls were. T_T i have since gotten over that, but the thing that i that i had to remind myself is that this particular person works really hard on their dolls all the time, and i just don't do that on a daily basis. so i can't really expect to be as well known as someone who is that dedicated. not to mention i am not nearly as fortunate to have a lot of money to buy all of the dolls i want and customize them and yea. sad day.

but the other reason i posted that last bit is because i read ur first post with the edit in it and i am hoping that for anyone else who is feeling down that ppl don't know about them and their dolls that that might be why? but i dunno.

    2. I can admit that when it comes to most of the bjd photographers on DA that I follow, I've pined over one or more of their dolls. ALWAYS looks wise, to be more specific sculpts I would have NEVER thought of getting in a million years. Sadly, many of the sculpts look too young or are just wrong for my OCs.

    3. In my case, I wouldn't say "obsessed". Of course they are few (read: a tons xD) of dolls I like, but it's more like admiring the owner's style, imagination, skills...

It never happened to me. I rather create a totally new and unique doll than copy someone else work and then feel bad about it. For me, creating characters and then turning them into dolls is really big fun :)

    4. I'm always totally obsessed with Mire Lapin's boys and at the moment Christy's Abies :wiggle :makes grabby hands:

    5. I must agree with that! I've got my grail doll on hold til Friday and the USD keeps rising! Thank God I'll be able to buy him on Friday!

    6. I enjoy looking at other people's dolls, but I have never made a doll purchase based on someone else's doll that I like. I buy my dolls for who they are, either second hand or based on the default makeup/pictures (hasn't failed me yet).

I was very tempted by a B&G Afra once, but after looking at the default pictures in comparison, I saw just how individual he was. Nothing I could do could possibly recreate him. I do however keep a spare eye on that user's threads, incase he ever needed to be rehomed I would love to be first in line. I am guilty of that, but I'm definately not going to 'make my own' version. I never would. I respect the artists far too much.

Edit: Artists = Owners. I know that not all owners are able to customize their dolls and can hire others, but I do consider all owners to be artists in their own way, even if it's just the concept. It is an art to have an idea and make it reality, no matter what medium we use.

    7. Sometimes I feel like a stalker but I just really like certain people's pictures, I look up to them in a way, and how they style their dolls so that it influences me... I try my best to make my dolls different of course, but it sucks feeling like a copy cat and I can't help it. ><

It never got as far as actually getting the same doll as the other person or copying it detail for detail, but I wanted to give my Luts Bory (popular sculpt) a good name and I found this other owner with a Bory whose name I thought was absolutely perfect for my boy, so I took that name. I know there could be a lot of Bory's out there with the same name, but I just try to lie low so the owner doesn't find out or anything because I still feel a bit guilty about it... -_-

    8. This has actually happened to me twice now; my dream doll is a certain Shiwoo, which I usually don't find a very attractive mold in general even, but how this person customised it turned it into my favourite doll ever, but he's since been sold without my knowledge, and changed. :(

I've been thinking about getting a MNF Shiwoo and trying a similar face-up, but I feel like I'm doing something wrong?
Its not so much about the character, but he had a certain look I loved.

Should I go through with it, or is that terrible? : /

    9. Absolutely.
The reason I'm getting a Zoall is because of another owners pics.
However, I was trying to re-create this doll, clothes face up, everything, wondering where I could get the right wig, right eyes from. I had to stop myself.
I then realised, if I tried to create this persons' doll (one, it's plagerism, so I didn't) and it didn't look exactly the same, I would be VERY disappointed,
So now, I'm still getting a Zaoll, but she's getting a look that I want, a wig that I was and eyes that I want.
She'll not look anything like that persons Zaoll, and I think I'll love her more for it. Because she'll be mine, my creation, not someone elses

    10. One of my Freinds on DA's has amazing bjd's thats what got me into them >w<

    11. I've had experiences where I fall in love with the way people portray their dolls. And I love to see the photos.
I also have had experiences where people have GORGEOUS dolls they own in their profile picture/display and when I go to find other photos of said doll, I can't and it makes me frustrated.
Never been obsessed, because I can see that being negatory, but I find falling in love with other people's dolls to be inspiring and one of the biggest compliments you can give a person.

    12. ANY of Cenarius' (sp?) Sards and Dia boys. And ANY of Sabriell's Minimees. Just love them!

    13. :droolI'm madly in love with Y-n-Y's, on deviantart, Dream of Doll H. Ducan. Now I don't know if I love Ducan's or just hers.

    14. Yeah, happened to me. I fell in love with some dolls from DoA, but finally came to realize that I wouldn't be able to fully enjoy a doll I did not customize myself, so I try to have as much fun as I can =]

    15. I have definitely experienced this. I fell in love with Volks Mai (Special edition Liz) but had ridiculous trouble getting her, then I fell in love with a specially-face-upped Liz owned by someone else and tried to get my own Liz to compare but I went through two or three, including an actual Mai (whom I didn't like as much upon seeing her in person) and none of them ever compared to the one owned by someone else.

Then by chance that owner put that Liz up for sale and I nabbed her. She was very beautiful, but I never felt I could connect with her right, so I ended up selling her.

Then I fell TOTALLY in love with someone else's Liz, and I knew that even if I tried none would compare, so I didn't waste my money trying. I emailed that person (NOT to ask if they would sell their doll) just to tell them how much I loved the doll and how beautiful she was, and they OFFERED to sell her to me!
I nearly died, and with the time frame they gave me and the price I also nearly couldn't afford her, but by some miracle it happened! She is now mine, and she is everything I expected and more!

So, yeah it's happened to me, but with a happy ending :). Don't go asking people if they'll sell you their dolls because it is against the rules (and that is not what I did), but just stay hopeful and you may find that you can customize your doll in a way that makes you like him/her even more than the first one you wanted :).

    16. I am gulity of this. Its not like I would get the same doll but I had 3 dolls that belong to different people and I always looked at those dolls and was like there so cool.

    17. I always find that I fall in love with others' dolls which is why all the ones I have and want are very popular sculpts, however I'm never upset mine doesn't look like someone else's because I do actually fall for the sculpt and not the customizations (wig/eyes/faceup/etc).

    18. I'm not really obsessed with other people's dolls but there are a few dolls that I think are customised beautifully and I like to see what their owners are doing with them. I think the-HappiestPrincess' Delf Miyu, Ibi, is a gorgeous, unique doll, I've never seen another Miyu like her and I sort of hope I don't because I'd know it was someone copying the-HappiestPrincess.

I didn't dislike Delf Miyu's before I saw Ibi, but it was a sculpt that didn't particularly move me much, pretty yes, wanty no. Then I saw how the-HappiestPrincess has styled Ibi and I think she looks wonderful. There are a few dolls like this that I follow, dolls that didn't directly appeal to me the way the company presented them, but in the hands of talented artists and stylists, they look more amazing than the company could make them.

I used to go crazy looking for pictures of awesome Volks F-01 dolls...and then I got my own, had her customised by the amazing Icchaeyo and I don't go looking for them anymore very much because I have my own Mafonwen, customised the way I wanted and I'm super happy with her.

    19. personally, i'm in love with a few of my friend's dolls.
my friend Geishacookie, here on the den, mods hers and makes faceups into things i never even thought about. i'm a little envious of her talent, and i constantly wish that i could borrow them just for a weekend or two.
maybe it's just because she puts so much love into them, i fall in love too.

    20. Yep. Buuuut... Not to the point that I actually wanted to have THAT doll (like, stealing it), nor did I try to copy it, or even thought about getting the same sculpt, because I knew it would always feel like a copy and not the real one. I just try to admire from a distance. Luckily it's a doll that is owned by one of my friends, so I can just ask her to bring it along every time we go to something doll-related.
