Obsessed with another owner's doll?

Sep 16, 2005

    1. I wouldn't say I am obsessed, but I do like finding new photos of navci's Tomato, a bluefairy tommy. She is just a gorgeous doll. I don't think I would copy her at all, since I think I like the attitude behind her.

Kinda like loving a particular character an actor plays, but not necessarily liking the actor when you see them normally.

      But I do have to say....love navci's photography.....really wonderful.

    2. I'm obsessed with Minimees!! I get sooooo jealous of MNM owners because I know I can never have one :...( There are seriously some epic MNM's out there that blow my mind!!

    3. I became obsessed with an owners doll I first found for sale. In the beginning I was really only interested because he was cute, so I kept tabs on him. As months went by with no one having interest in him, I began browsing the owners threads for pictures of him, a bit of his personality. Slowly I became obsessed with him, and although I liked the sculpt I knew It wouldn't be the same if it wasnt HIM! A month and a half of nearly killing myself trying to save the money and hes home :) Im just lucky he was for sale *_* Theres another doll owner, lulufae, and it seems like all her dolls are just slightly modded to be unique and they are all so pretty! I'm very happy just looking at her pictures but if one were to ever be up for sale... oh my. Id have to kill myself all over again to afford it. Honestly though I don't have an urge to own them. Id rather just hold them and maybe take a few pics :) (except her CH Yeonu. That one I want all for myself!)

BTW- No, id never mimic someones doll no matter how much I may like it. Even with the one I bought I wiped off his face up, gave him tattoos, and bought him a totally different wig. I'm to creative and impulsive of a person to allow a doll I own to keep a look I didn't make. If I were to magically own lulufaes CH Yeonu, id keep the face up and maybe get a similar wig, but his clothes would be very different and he could easily end up with a tattoo.

    4. Alright, I figured I spent far too much time reading through this thread the entire time nodding my head going "Ahuh." "Yep." "Oh, I totally agree!"

While I'm not outright obsessed with anyone's doll there are a few that I admit I have had fangirl moments over.

River Kelpie's entire crew. The reason behind my love of the Nanuri07 and to this day her Juri 06 is one of the only ones I still truly admire.

Xi-Feng and her Ysiri. AH! The one that started my crazy El obsession in the first place! I saw him and went "HAVE TO HAVE ONE!" ....Several years later I'm the lucky owner of....well...several. XD

Aernath's entire crew of hunky Bleach(Or otherwise) men! Ichigo made me laugh with his humor on days when I was just in general feeling down.

I think its great to let people know just how much you appreciate their works of art and their dolls certainly reflect just that... pieces of individual art. None of which should ever be copied or redistributed in any way other then by the original owner. So, while I adore and love all of these beautiful dolls and respect and have befriended a lot of their owners I would never ever ever blatantly copy anyone. Just because I know how it feels to be looking around and finding something so identically similar that there is no way it wasnt intentional without permission.

And while a lot of these beautiful dolls were the beginning love of a certain sculpt it is never my intention to ever make anything identical to anyone's. And to this day I still stalk people's posts ;D

    5. Eldurwen's Jasper. Nuff said~

    6. I think obsessed is a little much, but I have a special place in my heart for an irl friend's Reisner.
Before I got any of my own dolls, he'd let me have that certain boy for a week to see if I really wouldn't get creeped out with a big doll like that in my room all the time (as I am usually afraid of a wide range of dolls) which was really nice.

He's still one of the very few Volks molds I'd love to own one day - no matter what version exactly.

    7. Yes....Yoriko Alasmei's Die T3T;;; I dunno if she's a member on here, but she has an account with dA. And gah! She dresses him very well, love his hair, his face, even his personality! I dunno what brand he is, but I could never try to copy him or model a doll after him, so I just admire him from the screen.

    8. I think that everybody has felt this, not only with dolls, but other things. We see other's ideas as something unique and beautiful. We look at our own ideas, our own creations and see them as mundane. The fact of the matter is, we are our own worst critics. You may think that your BJD project looks horrible, when in fact, it will be the most spectacular doll to somebody else. :) So chin up, make the best BJD project you can muster, and leave it up for the the other people to decide. You may not think it great, but others will.

As for me, I look around this entire board and find myself going 'wow' at just about everybody. LOL

    9. Not over obsessed, I obsess over my dolls instead :)
But I do have favorite dolls by other owners. Mostly it's not the doll it self I like, but photographing, the character, style of the doll etc etc. I can do the opposite too, dislike dolls because I think the owner is overrated of something.

    10. There are many dolls out there I love to bits. And I can't possibly voice my admiration for their owners, who are something like magicians in my eyes - they're so good at articulating their doll's characters! Clothes, wigs, eyes, even the default face-up my boy has, kept giving me headache for the longest time. But then I realised - so what? I love him as a person, not because of his looks, after all. And although I'm currently not 100% with his new wig, I couldn't care less. Because, really, he's just lovely the way he is. Even with all these flaws. Cause it's who he is.

    11. I won't say obsessed, but I met someone recently online who has a gorgeous doll I would take in a heartbeat if she ever wanted to get rid of her! The company went out of business and she's had her for several years, I think, so I couldn't easily get my own.

    12. I am not completely attached to my day old doll....I am worried I never will. I was dolly sitting for someone I don't get along with anymore...I got attached to her. My doll is a BBB Ariel, Hers was a BBB Sprite. They look so similar that it makes me sad that I had to give back that sweet doll. I am also having trouble getting used to her being mine. Is this normal? Does anyone else have this happen?:...(

    13. I think if I customized my Dahlia I would feel better, I love her. I just look at her and it reminds me of my ex friends doll that I obsessed over.

    14. I myself haven't been smitten, per se, with a doll to the point of obsession (as the title of this thread suggests) but I have adopted a member's doll because the sculpt itself was discontinued and the fact that I just really like the mods the owner added to the sculpt. That aside, the real reason for my reply is your reply, Luke - this is a WONDERFUL answer to this thread's question! :) I think everyone should take this to heart.

    15. I know it's difficult, but you have to put things in perspective. The past is history; no one can change what happened between you and your friend, but it shouldn't interfere with how you interact with your doll.

You need to take your doll out, customize it, or do whatever you think is right for you to 'bond' with your doll. You won't be able to dwell on bad experiences with your friend if you're too busy thinking about the awesome experiences you've had with your doll. :)

It's way too easy to dwell in the past. I don't know what happened between you two, and neither of us can change what happened. It's unhealthy to dwell in the past, which is why we need to be proactive about the future. Ask yourself: what am I going to do with this doll? Then do it.

    16. I'm not really obsessed, but quite infatuated. I've been wanting a B&G Aurora for so darn long TuT. I really love Karmade's Freeza and LhiannanSidhe's Rhoslyn. Their girls showed different ethnicity that it made me want her even more! I'm still saving up for my own dear Zcarsi~♥

    17. ;A; It's sad that many companies have gone already. What sculpt is she btw?

    18. Oh god, yes. I rarely ever comment on this persons threads, but I think I have saved every picture of byouyuukens Orpheus & Ms. Yui on my computer in an extra folder, haha.

I have planned the concept "Dark and Dangerous SD-boy meets Lovely and Innocent MSD-girl" for my two dolls before I've seen hers, too, but so far it did not work out so well.
But Orpheus and Yui... They're so much more than just this concept. I've seen them and loved them immediately.

I constantly check byouyuukens profile for new pictures, too. :sweat Makes me feel a bit like a stalker...

It's the first time this has happened to me, though...

    19. I'm obsessed with my friend's minimee, he's Kyo from dir en grey, I actually stole him for a while and have him in the house. He has such a realistic/intense look. She also has an Uruha if your interested in looking. ^^

    20. I have been obsessed with other owner's photography, story-telling, and creative output surrounding their dolls. Obsessed, as in "thinking about something a lot with happiness, looking at something again and again and enjoying it, feeling inspired by something". Of course! I love beautiful things, and how could I not enjoy pictures and stories that are beautiful? And if I enjoy something, I will try to repeat the pleasant experience.

The example that comes to my mind would be the NachtZirkus by MadamMauMau. I love the unique concept, I like certain topics that she uses, and I like her choice of doll sculpts and the way she turns them into living characters (ahemmm.... ^///^ Horse!!! Mauzi!!! Lilu!!!! *faint*)

Another example would be Mr. Have and Clean Slate by candygears, and the pictures of them. They are fantastic, and there is so much thought, effort and talent that went into them!

These are just examples. There are more. Much more.

But I am not obsessed by their dolls.

Yes, I might like the sculpts, and might coincidentally want to own some of those. But usually I like this sculpt before I become obsessed with the creation of a doll owner, and don't start wanting a certain sculpt because of the way the person represents it (it is rather probable that I discover the wonderful creation of a doll owner BECAUSE they use certain sculpts for it in the first place, since I find them while doing a search for this sculpt).

I am obsessed with their art.
