On Display or in their Boxes?

Feb 7, 2022

    1. Mine are displayed on my small bookshelf. I like having them where I can see them or if I wanna play with them. In the past I've been worried about my cat knocking them down, but he's never shown interest in the shelf so I'm not worried.

    2. I'm so weird with this. Kids' play doll I could easily buy a replacement for and is designed to go through hell? You're in a box, on a shelf, high up where no one can reach you. BJD? We're going everywhere together.

    3. There's probably a few threads on here just like this one, and I've probably replied to all. This one will probably get merged with one eventually, but I'll still add my own comments here as well, because why not?

I always intended for my BJD to be kept in their boxes, inside my closet. Not just to allow their resin to mellow as slowly as possible, but more importantly so that my seven fur-babies would be away from them at all times. I also live in an earthquake prone state (in the USA). My cats are allowed everywhere, and I wouldn't have it any other way for any reason whatsoever, let alone for dolls. So, the large heavy dolls go in the closet. I don't mind, it doesn't make me enjoy them any less than if they were displayed -- I am a weirdo MISB collector outside of this one, so never touching stuff has never bothered me, from the beginning of my life, up until older-than-dust-age. It's a thing I kind of enjoy, keeping things in boxes, because I am a huge weirdo, so I think even if my kitties weren't beautiful troublemakers, I would still keep my BJD in boxes, inside a larger box (my closet).

    4. Mine live in my room, in the walk in closet. So...sort of displayed?? All my books and stuffed animals are also on shelves in there.

    5. Moving into a different house meant new configurations of furniture. I am not quite sure how to display them yet so in the box they go.

    6. Mine currently live in their boxes as no space to display them. I’d like to have a dedicated display for them in the future though. Also none of them are in a displayable state at the moment either and while I might find bald, blank and naked dolls a wonderful decorative piece others may not.

    7. If I will keep the dolls in their boxes I would prefer to sell them to find someone who would love them more.

    8. Historically 'completed' dolls of mine have been out sitting on shelves. However since I've married my husband (dolls unnerve him), moved into a house with more natural light and gotten 2 cats most of my dolls are half in boxes and half in a solid cabinet. I miss being able to have them out and about.

    9. Out on display in glass curios from Ikea. We've had special IV cut glass windows put in the living room so they can sit out safely without further oxidation- They all have mellowed some since most are between 6-10 years old, but nicely and none are green, and the mellowing seems to have stopped for most if not all.

Edited to add that it's Ikea's white frame Milsbo double door glass cabinet they're displayed in.

    10. To me, there's not really a point to having my dolls if I don't have them on display. That's kinda the whole purpose of them for me.

    11. I display them, I love seeing them around, especially during times when I don't have the time to play with them. Their presence makes me happy.

    12. I put all my dolls on my table or on bookshelf, there’s no direct sunlight, and I like them surrounding me when I work. For floating heads that does not have a body or bust stand, I put them in a box.

    13. Definitely on display. I know they would be the safest in their boxes, but I want them where I can admire their beauty. They sit next to my desk and I have thick curtains against the sunlight for the winter months when the sun is low enough to shine in directly. My dolls are 10 years out of the box and sure, they don't have the exact same color as they used to be when they arrived, but they are not 'yellow' at all. Dust is everywhere, sure, but most of the dust fall on their wig and clothes, so I don't worry about that a lot. I clean them regularly, I change their dress, wash their wig... I understand if anybody keeps them in boxes too. It all depends on the purpose and preference.

    14. I am down to 3 dolls and one pet doll so display. Of course my dolls have always been on display just was harder to find a safe space even in a room of their own.

    15. I have a small table in my office where I display my doll. I love to dress her up and change her position weekly. The desk also has some fantasy (dragons and a fairy garden) props I like to use around her. It makes it where I can see her more. I do try to keep her out of direct sunlight though.

    16. I'm one of "those people" who keep mine in boxes with the exception being my DD girl. She's on display in a detolf since I'm not particularly worried about color change. I honestly wouldn't recommend everyone go out and buy a detolf. They feel really cheap to me and I wouldn't own this one if someone hadn't given it to me for free. I'll definitely invest in a higher quality display case myself in the future when I have a permanent home.

If I had a room of my own with blackout curtains, I would probably display them. I figure there's no reason to increase exposure to sunlight if I'm not looking at them. I try to keep the boxes of the dolls I play with most easily accessible though. I have a kotatsu height table in my room I use as a crafts desk and I'm currently keeping the boxes my minis and SD are in under that table. I have enough room to sit and keep both boxes under.

I found a weirdly sized trunk at a thrift store a few months ago that happened to be 60cm long. It's absolutely perfect for my SD and I wish I knew what the intended item to store in it was! I made 2 doll pillows for her as a "mattress" and 2 matching head pillows in the same fabric (just for cuteness). I covered the "mattress" in a quilt that had been in my own crib as a baby. I don't know who took the time to make it for me, but I really value it and I thought it would be perfect addition to the trunk. I leave my SD in this box and just quickly grab her out whenever I want to see or play with her.

Back at my mom's house, I have 4 tinies neatly tucked in my grandmother's toy box. My mom won't let me take the box to my apartment, but it'll be mine someday. I used to keep both of my mini sized girls in there when I lived at home with her.

I'm always looking for a nice hope chest or short chest of drawers at thrift stores to keep more of my dolls in. I'm starting to consider getting one custom made, but I'm just keeping my eyes out for now. I'd really like to get them something nice someday.

    17. Always on display. I only have two dolls that stay in the box and that is only because they look perfect displayed in there (they are not bjd's they are Skullector Monster High dolls) But literally every other doll I have owned comes out of the box. If I can't handle and pose and redress my dolls I wouldn't even bother to collect them. I want to see them every day even if I am not touching them. I could never put them in the boxes. When we moved I had to box them up and I hated it, I couldn't wait to get settled so I could get them out of the box.

    18. My Crew are all out and about the house. On a tall wardrobe, on top of a dresser, a bench in the bedroom that used to be for humans, :lol:and even a table in the bedroom. I have my one tiny on the kitchen table, and a SD sitting in a chair next to me right now. All of them are away from sunlight, so its okay.

If I had to keep them in boxes all the time, I would (almost) forget they existed. What's the use of having dolls if you can't see them, change their clothes and wigs, take them out for pics or play with them? I think it would be a pointless hobby if I had to box them where they can't be seen.

    19. I wish I have the space. Every time I finished playing I would need to keep them in their boxes (because the boxes offered better protection) and shelved everything. Or else, I wouldn't even have the space to walk in my shoebox apartment.
At one point I even got fed up with wrapping and unwrapping the doll and storing it properly that I just refused to play with dolls for a long while. :sigh

    20. Mine are in display too and I love it!
I keep them in a wooden cabinet with glass panels on the doors so I can see them. The cabinet is located so the sun doesn't ever hit them directly to protect them from getting discoloured.
It is much more easy for me to find time to play with them if I see them and have them close. It would be a bother to have to get them from their boxes all the time.
