1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

On Display or in their Boxes?

Feb 7, 2022

    1. *snip*

Oh, I totally get it! My house is really small, which is why My Crew is scattered everywhere. :3nodding:

I'm looking at replacing the bookshelf in my bedroom with a Ikea Billy cabinet, and storing away my manga and book collection. I don't have the room in the main part of the (small!) house for over 27 boxes, so they are all stored in the basement, which, when it rains can get super damp or even flood. I simply can't keep the dolls in those boxes. Of course, I'd rather lose the boxes than the dolls.

Shoebox apartments and small houses does tend to make being in this hobby a bit difficult, especially when it comes to being mostly into SDs and larger, like I am.:sweat

    2. Brother! Thank you for sympathising! We're totally on the same boat!

Please let me know how the IKEA Billy cabinet works out for you?
My mother's house used IKEA Detolf (the one with 4-sides glass panels) but I find it impractical for storing items because of the gaps allowing dust to go into the cabinets.:sweat

    3. I didn't do anything with my dolls for ten years aside from changing an outfit or wig every few years. However, I've always had them on display, many with stands to prevent falling. Just seeing them always made me happy even when I wasn't doing anything with them. I have my dolls specifically because I like how they look. The posability is important to me but I'm not even sure why! I have them because I like to see them so, for me, keeping them in boxes would defeat the purpose. They used to live in my bedroom and now they're in my office so I can see them all the time.

I don't take nearly as make precautions as others do... But only my Narae has yellowed in a way that I can notice and I think that was going to happen anyway because of the type of resin.

I just realized I have my DOD Leya's original body in a storage bag in the closet and it hasn't been out of that bag in at least 11 years. I should compare the resin color of that body and her head which has been out on display since I got her in 2005 (or was it 2004...or maybe 2006...)

    4. Oh, its probably going to be a while. First I have to empty and put away/toss/recycle/sell whatever was in all the boxes in the basement from when I moved, then reorganize the bedroom, not to mention decide where I can safely put my books....:sweat

Somewhere on DOA is a thread where people show how they display their dolls. (Its where I found out about Ikea's Billy with glass doors cabinet.) I also subscribe to that thread for ideas, but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of it. If I remember, I'll link it.

If anyone else remembers it, feel free to link it. :thumbup

    5. I prefer not to have them exposed to sunlight and dust, so I keep mine in the boxes they came in. My two big dolls stay under my bed, and my smaller ones stay in my closet. I've had them for a few years. They still yellow over time; it's inevitable, but the less they are exposed to light, the slower they yellow.

    6. Yup, that's the one! I'm all over the active thread. :XD: If you look through it, there are quite a few people that have opted for the Billy cases with the glass doors. I'm eventually going to get one, and then get lighting for it. I'll have to check and make sure that the kind of lighting Ikea has won't have any kind of UV in it, since I don't need My Crew to get any yellower than they already are.:sweat

Someday, someday, I'll be able to get a Billy for them. My worry is, another doll just came home, so now I'm up to 27, which means I'll probably need two by then.

    7. In boxes....I love them but I've had a few spooky doll experiences in my past that they go to bed when I go to bed lmao

    8. I keep mine on display in an IKEA display case in a dark corner of my office, right next to my workstation. That room doesn't get very much sunlight, but I still keep shades partially drawn on the windows just to be safe. There are LED lights in the display case, so they're nicely lit up during the day. I know my dolls might yellow a little faster than if they were in the box, but I get so much joy from being able to see and appreciate them when I work. :D

    9. I suffer from a thing where if I can’t actively see something, I tend to forget it even exists, so all of mine have to be on display or I’d never do anything with them.

    10. Mine are stored all around my room pretty much. I like to look at them because they make me happy. Sometimes when I'm just doing things around the room, I'll randomly fluff their hair or adjust their arms/hands/legs just to give em a little more of a quirk to them.

    11. My dolls are out and displayed. For me, it would be a waste to buy dolls and not be able to see them everyday. I just love waking up everyday and looking over at my dolls.

    12. If I kept my dolls in their boxes, what would be the point in owning them? I want to be able to see my dolls all the time. I keep them on open utility shelves in my bedroom. I've never had a doll get dusty. The shelves are deep, so the dust doesn't seem to get to them.

    13. I keep them all out on display for the most part. The sole doll that isn't on display is my brown tan Soom doll and I'm keeping her in her box until I finally get around to getting her a faceup and a proper cabinet to hide her from the sun which I'm hoping will happen this year.

Like many others in this thread, I don't see the point of keeping them in their boxes. The fact that they're decor that you can "play" with is definitely a selling point for me. Also I just enjoy looking at them.

    14. I'm hoping to build roomboxes for mine. I need them out on display but I also want to do more than just have them be "there" (although I quite enjoy the duo that sit on my desk)

    15. I currently have only two out of five dolls out on display. Out of the three in their boxes: one is up for sale, one needs to be restrung, and one does not fit on my shelf. I also just don't have the room for all of them to be out; I can only fit one more on my shelf! But I like having them out so I can see their beautiful features! It makes me happy and they keep me company in a way :3nodding:

    16. I have this same issue:pout:, but even if I didn't I would still have my dolls on display as I bought them to enjoy them and for me keeping them in boxes would defeat that purpose.
They are currently sitting on boxes containing their clothes on a drawer in my bedroom. I see them everytime I wake up or go to bed:love.
Theres no direct sunlight touching them and theres a thick curtain drawn all the time, but I do take them outside sometimes:sweat.

    17. For me, in the box. My apartment is small and I don’t really have room for a nice shelving unit to display them in. Or a safe one for that matter. Even if I had a room with no windows, we are prone to earthquakes where I am, and they could fall.

    18. I prefer to display them so I can enjoy them ^^"
