On Display or in their Boxes?

Feb 7, 2022

    1. I've never been able to wrap head around investing so much time, money, and emotion into an heirloom-quality doll, only to pack them away in a box; seeing them every day is such a joy, and one of the few things that makes me happy, even if only for a moment.

    2. I display most of my dolls unless they are "incomplete". If my dolls do not have face-up or clothing, I will keep them in the box. Displaying the dolls enables me to appreciate their beauty.

    3. Most of my dolls are in their boxes. Well, they are in boxes, not necessarily their own
I do not have the space to display them all, so 3 of them are in my living room and 3 to 6 others are displayed in my workshop. I rotate between my dolls, so all of them are in display part of the year.

    4. I honestly might get to this point. But it's so hard because I want to see all of my dolls and I feel bad putting them away.

    5. Always out! I buy them to be able to enjoy them, or enjoy seeing them at least, so I have them out on desks and shelves. It jus makes me happy to walk by and see them there :aheartbea

    6. I love displaying my dolls and I couldn't imagine just having them sitting in their boxes. However, I have the space and I know not everyone is fortunate enough to have that. The only time a doll is in a box is if it's to see if I want to keep them or not/are being prepared to be sold.

I always keep at least one at my desk in my work room, the others sit on a shelf nearby.

    7. I would love on display but for now I have them in their boxes .

    8. I love having dolls on display, to me it's the whole point of having them! Honestly if they aren't in my sight I will forget about them, I'm like a baby with no object permanence lol. I also make sure to dust my collections weekly, if there's even a little dust i can't stand it.

    9. Always on display! I don't really see the point in having them if theyre just gonna sit in their boxes all day everyday :(

    10. I don't even have their boxes anymore! I have a small house and no room to store a pile of boxes, and I hate clutter. My dolls live in a display shelf in my art room that was built specifically for them so that the shelves are the right height for big SDs. The only precaution I bother with is that when my husband built it for me I asked him to put it in the corner that faces away from any of the windows.

    11. I put them in their boxes because every rooms in my place have windows (except restroom of course lol) I'm scared if they will get yellow quick. I do play with them often though :whee:

    12. Right now, I don't have room/shelving to keep anyone on permanent display, so almost everyone's in a box or carrying case.

    13. all my dolls are displayed around my bedroom, one day i will get around to actually putting together a display case for them but i'm lazy so they are mostly just on my computer desk, i personally can't see the point in spending so much money on something only to shut it away

    14. On display, definitely! All my full dolls are sitting on a drawer chest, although covered with cloth part of the time (I don't worry about yellowing too much, but don't want it to happen too soon). It's too crowded already though. I'd love to be able display them on the shelves behind the glass for them when I move to another place.

    15. I have a few on display a few in boxes- I hope to have the space to display them all soon!

    16. Like a lot of people here, I can't imagine spending so much on something and not getting to enjoy it, even at the cost of yellowing faster ;~;

    17. I keep all their boxes for moving purposes but I like to see my dolls so I display them.

I have a very small room though and over 30 dolls.
Bookcases are so expensive, heavy and I have so many dolls. I researched for many options trying to find a cheap bookcase to display them in my small room while looking nice.

I have a very old but very light and spacious Billy bookcase (cost me $30 back then and now it is $70+ :sigh) I display all my tiny dolls here (45cm and under) but I have a lot of big dolls. I would need like 4 more of those Billy bookcases but they are so expensive now and 4 bookcases take a lot of room. So I discarded those bookcases.

I found this in Amazon and it was my life saver. I can make it whatever size I need and it is almost the size of one Billy bookcase but holds 4x more than a billy bookcase so 4 in 1!! and cheaper! and super light :dance I can display all my big dolls now in the small corner of my room. I'm very happy with it.

I put it against the wall next to my window so I can keep my room bright and the light/sun never touches my dolls. To keep the dust away I purchased a clothes garment rack cover with zipper, put it over it and it fits perfectly. The cover goes all around and even covers the top so no dust is getting on my dolls and I can see them perfectly.

I'm working on a few dolls so like 5 dolls are missing (they all fit in there) this is how my big dolls are looking now

    18. I agree with this so much. It's nice to be able to see them most days. Even if you have to take extra care to keep them nice since they are out.

    19. I think how you keep them depends on how you like to interact with them. I personally have mine on a bookshelf where I can easily grab them because I enjoy keeping them close. They aren't in direct rays of the window though, but the prospect of yellowing doesn't bother me much. I have a few secondhand dolls anyway that didn't come to me in perfect condition, and to be honest it just makes me feel like I can interact with them more. I also enjoy taking pictures outside as I live in the mountains and it's so pretty.

    20. I have a variety of different dolls so for me, it depends on which dolls. My limited edition Disney Designer dolls are all kept in their boxes and I display them with their front flaps open but still in the box because those are dolls that I don't take out to pose. I got them because I love the characters/love to collect those dolls but I like to keep them in mint condition. For my BJD's on the other hand, they're on display in my Billy! It's perfect because it's in my office and the doors are glass so I can always see my dolls. They're also protected from the light as well and share a space with my other figures such as pop funkos and nendos that I like to keep on display for me and others to see.
