Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. For me my dolls arent ^toys, they are a hobby and they are my children as well as i call them. I know there not technically alive but there not just toys^ to me. As for the other, I do feel odd if some1 just wastes there money and doesnt take care of them but as to whether buying a cheap or expensive ones thats really the buyers decision i just know im real picky and only want the best quality ones and i like nice hands : P

    2. i know alot of people are criticising others saying you shouldnt even care, but id just like to say, i dont CARE what other people do, but i cant help but wonder why and look into it further

please dont take any of my comments, and i dare say other peoples, as saying 'you should or shouldnt do this' its more just loooking at it and debating...which is what this section is for ^^; just thought id clarify incase it was bothering anyone

and about the comment on dolls being more like a pet than a purse...i kinda say its a mix of both ^^; i suppose i feel sorry for misreated dolls because of the love i have for mine, and im wierd like that. but there is also the pride i have in them which yes, makes them more like a purse XD

    3. i totally agree with Datsuki, i hate to see mistreated dolls as i love mine so much and i sometimes feel i want to 'rescue' them.
I'm not especially precious about my dolls but i hope i take care of them.

It doesn't matter that one is cheaper than the others, she was all i could afford at the time, but i don't 'value' her any less than the other 2 more expensive ones.

i would wonder if people only bought the cheaper ones if they didn't even like the molds as much as a more expensive one. surely you wouldn't care as much if there was that doubt?

    4. I'm not even going to get into how I feel about this topic, but I have to disagree pretty strongly with this.

I don't think the discussion has anything to do with dolls-with-souls. It's much more like something taking care of the things that you own. How many times did our mothers tell us as children, don't leave your things on the floor, it shows you don't appreciate them. You wouldn't toss your iPod under the bed and forget about it, or leave your laptop on the floor and step on it. You own something that's important to you, you take care of it. It's common sense.

It just so happens that, to most people in this hobby, "taking care" of a doll entails a little bit more. It involves not using the the wrong materials on it, giving it a decent faceup, making sure the eyes are in straight and the wig is brushed and isn't crooked, taking pictures in clear pictures in a clean area, not dressing it in a sock. Anything else looks "cheap", whether it's a Dollzone or a Volks.

    5. I think in the end people shouldn't buy the doll they want or the doll they can afford but both. If you can afford to buy the $1200 limited that you love then go for it. However if you can't afford it then obviously don't buy it. If you can't afford the $1200 doll don't run out and buy a $200 doll just because you have $200 either. If you don't like it very much but just want a doll it's a waste of money. I personally would rather spend 5 years saving for the $1200 doll I really loved than spend $200 on a doll that I didn't much care for.

When I buy a doll I always have to decide if desire meets price. In some cases I've fallen for a really expensive doll but not enough to pay the asking price for it. This is one of the reasons I don't have any boy dolls, though I really like a few of them I just don't like them enough to spend any money on them that would be better spent on a girl I'd enjoy more.

I recently bought a Volks Yo-SD Tanpopo second hand, she was total with shipping $484.98. I however also have a DZ BB Ani which is the same size range which cost $180.00 shipped. That's just over a $300 difference, however I adore both of them the same amount. The Ani is relatively "cheap" as far as this hobby goes but I really liked her so I bought her. I really like Volks Liz but at this time I don't want her enough to pay the $1200+ she sells for. However I plan to have an Unoa Latea someday which is probably going to be $1500 or more. In the end Latea will be more expensive than Liz but I want Latea enough to pay the price for her.

In the end I think all people feel that the price must meet the desire. Whatever the reason for wanting the thing may be. Some people will buy the Coach purse as a status symbol while other people will buy it just because they think it's a nice bag. The same can be said for dolls. I think people own dolls for lots of different reasons, whether it's because they simply want it, to feel part of the hobby, to have the uber limited to show off, or any number of other reasons. In the end I think if a person has a $200 doll it's not because they are "cheap" but simply because they didn't want the $1200 doll enough to pay that much money. I say more power to them for not shelling out $1200 for something they didn't feel was worth it.

    6. Personally, I must admit I'm very happy you (_Mouse_) framed the word cheap with quote marks. I think BJD enthusiasts often forget that $50 is a lot of cash for most people on the Blue Planet.

In my experience, the amount of money sellers/creators ask for BJD stuff is only rarely related to the quality/style of the items. For example, I asked my Love to help me choose between the AOD and CP mini bodies, as we needed one for a MNF head. He looked at both, and, without seeing the prices, picked the AOD one. It was my favorite as well, so I bought it. I was happy to save some money, but even more to get better articulations for Shehara. No regrets!

Edit to say: I agree with you, Jerrysugarav!

    7. Haven't read the whole thread yet (workin on it though), so this is just my random 2 cents...

Personally, it doesn't matter to me, you like what you like. I have a CP El right now (also a headless DD2 >_>), and another doll on my "really really want" wishlist is a tan DZ Mo.

As for "people who get 'cheap' dolls just because of the price"... who cares. Seriously, I think some people in this hobby just get so overly concerned about the preferences and "motives" of other people and their dolls. If people, for whatever reason, decide to buy from the less expensive companies, Volks, Luts, Dream of Doll, etc aren't going to go out of business, so it's not really anyone else's concern. It's dolls, not politics :), you enjoy yours, and everyone else will enjoy their's. Ice cream for all.

    8. All of my dolls so far are in the cheaper range of the spectrum, an Abio Angel, a Kid Delf, two Banji's, and an Apollo head. That said, at almost 300$ a piece (not including Apollo's head), that is still bloody expensive.

That said, my next Dollie goal is a Dollmore Model Doll: Kyle Reese or another Kid Delf.

I will probably end up getting the kid delf first, because of her price, but that certainly doesn't mean I'm settling for less. I'm one of those people who looks at the horrendously expensive dolls that companies like Volks put out and... am often disappointed with them. And I look at Abio Angels, Obitsus and Bobobies... and I fall in love. Price does not necessarily reflect 'quality'.

That said, lower prices do certainly lead to the spontaneous impulse buy, my Banjis certainly caught me by surprise.

      I think I'm forgotten my point. But I'm sure it's in there somewhere. ^^;;

    9. I haven't got a doll but the one i have set my mind on is the middle of the road.
I think you should really go for the ones you like rather than on the prices.

    10. I feel like I have to butt in. As much as I do not like Volks dolls, I have to say that I'm getting tired of hearing people mentioning it over and over again to make a point that just because a doll is expensive, doesn't mean you like it.

I'm starting to feel like hiding whenever people say that with such righteousness cos it feels like we're trying to hurt Volks owners as much as they supposedly try to hurt us.

After a while of being convinced that I dont like volks doll sculpt, I realise that more often than not, I just don't like their oh-so-plainer-than-jane makeup that flaunts nothing. I find that the reason volks turn me off half the time is the current volks default makeup. I'd have to say that if you see some of the Volks doll in really good custom makeup, you'd think twice about declaring utter dislike for Volks doll. The new makeups look subpar to other companies like CP and stuff and generally disappoint me. Too plain, to general, too much the same kind of makeup colour from doll to doll. Flaunts NOTHING. But when I see the same head with custom faceup, they look more worthy of being known as the doll from the golden company.

So can we stop saying "I look at Volks and I don't like/hate their sculpts, but I think Bobobie/Dollzone/FantasyDoll is godly!", at least on this thread and find some other points to debate on this matter?

      thank you....

    11. i have nothing against lower-priced dolls as a whole, since i happen to like a few of them.

i do have a problem with people buying them just so that they can say that they have a doll and hence am "so cool/hip/in/edgy/(insert your own descriptive here). or those who buy copious amounts of them just so that they can have lots of dolls to brag about ("oh, you have _insert random low number here_? i have 394872985~!!").

because they aren't in it for a love of the hobby itself and were it not popular, they'd be shunning it and snarking at those in it. but because it's the latest 'fad', they have to get into it, but they aren't going to waste their money if they can help it, and go for the cheapest option they can find.

that's the kind of people i have issues with.

if you have dolls that are cheap and you like them, carry on. it's not your fault that the sculpt you like happens to cost a great deal less than most.

if you bought this doll only because it's the cheapest one you could find and it grants you access to some mystical 'elite' world, you're going to find youself sadly disappointed when you have no idea what to do with your $100++ worth of resin. because i have no idea why some people would think that grown-ups playing with dolls is in any way cool. because we're not. we're grown-up people. playing with plastic toys.

we just happen to like that. :3

    12. I totally agree with you, heck look at my signature! I am not saying that I don't ever want a Luts or Volks or any other sculpt that cost more than 400$ I am just saying that if you have the money, you want to buy it, then go for it. I know I can't because of financial issues, it doesn't mean that I buy Dollzone dolls just because I HAVE to or desperately want one to look cool! Heck I have never put mine on my lap when taking the metro!

And no I am not the kind of person that some of you think put sock clothes on my dolls...if that annoys people, I guess when I see poor African children playing with a toy they made out of recycling material from a garbage can, it must means that they are " too cheap to get a toy car " ?

We cherish what we have, what we can get, no matter what, it is no up to us to judge how other BJD owners should feel or act.

Sorry if I sound so mad or anything D:

    13. Well I would prefer some of the more expensive dolls, but at the moment even spending $200-300 on a doll is the most I've ever spent on a hobby item! I bought an AOD as my first doll, she wasn't my favorite from what I had seen but I thought she was pretty, and she was as much as I was willing to pay. I would not have bought her if I didnt like her at all though - I cant imagine anyone doing that!
It's all very well saying wait and save up, but I think even if I did have $1000 it's unlikely I would spend it all on one doll. And waiting is hard. I think I would rather spend less and get a doll sooner than wait over a year to buy one. I am now more willing to spend a bit more on my second doll, as I love my AOD and play with her all the time, so I know getting another more expensive doll wouldnt be a waste of money.

    14. I honestly cant believe people can do that - I mean, how can they afford to buy something that costs hundreds of $$ just because its cool (lol I didn't even realize it was cool). I do agree that would be a crazy thing to do, but I cant imagine anyone doing it. And then it would be the fact that they were buying dolls at all rather than whether they were buying a cheap doll or not :)

    15. I felt that in the place i am staying there are some people who can afford & have several truly expensive/limited dolls. And they are proud & looked down on some of us whom can only afford so called "Cheap" dolls. But even so the dolls we have is "Not Cheap" to us in regards to the price or the doll itself. Lowered priced dolls are good for us "cheap" people who wants to have a doll of our own to love. And it is great that we also love the mold/look of that "cheap" doll as well. We tend to treasure the doll more. Loving a doll is not just buying lots & lots of clothes/shoes/wigs/accessories & dress them up. So it's not a problem buying cheaper dolls. The only problem maybe the attitudes of people you are having around you.
If you can afford high class dolls you are lucky.
If you can afford cheap dolls please do love them of there's no point getting them.

    16. Over all I think that people should just buy the doll they love. There are dolls in all the price ranges that I like and those I don't. It is all a matter of perspective. My freind owns a doll that is over $700 that she adores and I personaly wouldn't buy that sculp and I want to steal one of her cheeper dolls. It shouldn't be about price but what your looking for in a doll and what you hope to get out of them.

    17. I believe that everyone must buy the doll that more like (but with a limit xDD)
however, if you like two dolls, it doesn't mind if one is for 100$ and the other 400$, you sould by the doll that you think that really love

      I only know one thing, I won't buy a doll because it's cheap >__<

    18. I would buy a more expensive doll that I love. actually, all of the dolls right now are at approximately the same level, except for few doll companies, but those have less detail of everything, like hands and body and all....so id buy a more expensive doll which i absolutely fully love, rather than a doll that has "bugs" that make me only "like" it.

    19. I don't care about the price...

I advice people only to buy dolls they completely fall for!
And well...most cheaper brands rarely steal your heart.

I decided to not look at prices anymore...
      Ofcourse..to much is to much.
But i rather be happy with one 600 usd doll that stole my eyes(yes how i call it XB)...
then 3 cheap dolls just because they were cheap...
just because i know i will always be watching the ones who i would just love to have.

(with that,i can't even handle more then 3 dolls so XB )

    20. 'Cheaper' brands rarely steal your heart apparently, but it might not be the same for everyone else. Just thought I should remind people of that. ^_^
