Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. I buyed two cheap dolls (well, is not cheap, but comparing with other molds..) and I have other molds in my wishlist very expensive, I think the people must buy the molds they like.

    2. I think it is much worse to buy expensive dolls just to show off than to buy cheap dolls if you like them. Everyone has his/her own limit how much they can spend for a doll and psychologically "press" people that only expensive dolls are cool is wrong, to my mind.
It seems to me that it makes sense to buy a 'cheap' doll that you like and be happy with it than to stay without a doll at all because you can't afford an expensive one.

    3. I can only afford cheap dolls at the moment, there are a few dolls that I like that are realitively cheap that good to me next to the more expensive dolls, the only problem is I like the large size dolls so they aren't always going to be in my price range.

I rather people bought dolls they like, if they like an expensive doll then I'm not going to complain to them about it, it's there choice in my books I just with they were cheaper.

    4. Well, I say buy whatever dolls make you happy, if it's cheaper that's cool. But, personally, I would rather save my money to get one expensive doll that I absolutely love than to buy several cheaper dolls that are nice but aren't quite what I really want.

    5. I don't really see a problem, either which way.. If it's a cheap doll, but you adore it anyway than get it..! The price shouldn't be a concern, in fact if I happened to fall in love with a cheaper doll, I'd consider it a blessing (especially for my wallet.. XD )

    6. Price is not the main thing I consider when thinking about adding a doll to my collection. If the doll in question touches my heart, I find a way to get it. It doesn't make any difference if said doll is considered to be less expensive, or rather costly, it just might take me a bit longer to save up the money to buy it. But as a life long doll collector, I never settle, if the doll I want is super limited, or even OOAK (one-of-a-kind), I wait and watch the secondary market for my heart's desire. Sometimes this takes years, but its worth the wait if the doll is meant to be in your life. ;)

    7. I buy whatever I like the most (unless it is too expensive). I don't buy anything because it is cheaper than something else. I'd rather buy fewer dolls than more cheaper dolls.

    8. Well to some people $200 isn't cheap and can take months to save up. I am so in love with the Pandora Bobobie, but with rent, and car, and bills it will take me a while to save up for her. Plus for some people your doll funds can suddenly dissappear when you have to take a car to the shop, or life throws a curve ball at you.
Also I plan on heavily modding my doll, so the idea of spending a years worth of savings on a doll and then maybe breaking it doesn't really appeal to me. And the worst thing, getting a doll and having no money to dress the poor thing or give it eyes or hair that you like :(

And I need to change my signature since I did have to fix my car and no longer have $157 lol.

    9. There are plenty of people on the forums who restrict themselves to only limited dolls or only realistic dolls or only one company dolls.. I don't see why anyone should have a problem for choosing only to get dolls at a certain price range.

I certainly have a set price range I wont' exceed to buy a doll why would I be narky at someone who's set price range is cheaper than mine?

    10. depends on my financial status at the moment.. and if i really want it heh. i'll usually give myself 2 mths and if i wan ti after 2 mths i'll buy it. unless it's limited edition then i'll get it right away.

    11. Ive recently found myself really liking the cheaper molds, ones like Bobobie and B & G. Theyre lovely dolls and just becuase they arent as expensive as Luts or Custom House doesnt mean theyre any less beautiful or well made! Im going to get cheaper dolls while saving for a more expensive one so it all works out ^^

    12. The most important thing is to get the doll you really want. If you really want a CP or Volks doll, don't settle for - for instance - a FantasyDoll, because in the end, you'll still be wanting the CP/Volks doll. That said, there's nothing wrong with just happening to like cheaper dolls - the price isn't a factor. :) If you happen to like cheaper dolls, be thankful XD!

If you've got your heart set on an expensive doll, don't sell yourself short; but if your favourite just happens to be one of the less expensive models on the market, go for it - don't feel like a cheapskate, because you're not!

    13. I got into this hobby, because I liked BJD. Stop and read that again for a second before I begin.

      Ok.

Unlike most people, the first BJD site I saw was Soom, and I liked literally everything I saw. I moved from site to site, just yearning to have a doll for myself. Seeing the price tags, and being as young and inexperienced at internet shopping as I was, I was VERY reluctant to purchase a $600 item I could never see until it reached my front door.
For a teenager, especially one who has never really had more money than about $60 EVER (at the time) it was something that was a huge investment.

I looked around and found Bobobie. I thought it was too good to be true. That something was up. "Why would they sell such gorgeous dolls for such inexpensive prices?"

$175, even $200 was tangible for me. My friends helped me buy my first doll, because they knew how much I really wanted it. About 10 people surrounding me helped me buy Tony, secretly gathering funds behind my back (all of which teenagers as well). He was a gift to me, and I would never ask anyone to do that for me again. Even as "cheap" as people like to comment (usually in a foul tone) I wouldn't trade him for a Volks One-Off in a millennium. He is worth MORE than that.

You can attach "cheap" if you want, "inexspensive" if you want to be nice, but that doesn't take away anything for the care that an owner has for the doll they have chosen.

Emotionally, this is what I feel. This is my primary feeling.

      Logically, I differ.

I am not the type that will sell my dolls to turn a profit for a new doll. However, I see time and time again people doing this. I can't help but think that some buy the "cheap"/"inexspensive" dolls as a lead to something bigger in the end. They appreciate the purchase they have made, but yes, still want the "bigger company doll".
They sell their first doll, to buy the one (or the series of dolls that lead up to) doll they really wanted to begin with.

This makes sense. Almost as if a long layaway for a new cool mp3 player, slowly buying up the ranks.

My boyfriend does it with Pocket PC phones, why wouldn't someone do it with dolls?

**EDIT** I felt like this was too closely related to begin another topic.

Why is there a hostility towards "cheaper dolls"? I've seen it a lot. Is it because people feel slighted that someone can get a BJD for a fourth of the price? Is it because of the different feel of these dolls? I have noticed that the "cheaper dolls" tend to have more of an anime look to them, unlike the "bigger brand" dolls that are more realistic. Volks, while maintaining both, certainly has more of a realistic feel than a Bobobie doll.

It's happening with companies that offer dolls at lower prices that the major companies like Luts, Volks, Soom, ect. and I don't understand this.

    14. I have to say that reading this topic has made me feel bad for being able to get a doll for around 200 dollars. Yes, one of the factors that made me choose my B&G Triya was the price. But when I saw the face of the doll I knew I wanted that one. That was Deuce to me. And because she was the face of a character I love, I was able to bond with her instantly.

Yes, it was falling in love with the Volks dolls that made me want to get one. I would still really like to have an Elena one day. But there are two more B&G Dolls and a Luts that I would want to have before I get her. I don't want to get a doll and have problems enjoying her because I keep thinking about how much I spent on her.

    15. The people is free for spend their money like they want. Personally I prefer wait more and save the quantity of money that I need for the doll that I really want. But I understand that there're people that maybe can't do that (or don't want do it XD), it's fine too.

    16. I think that you should go for your dream doll regardless of price, so long as you aren't making ridiculous sacrifices to afford it. But I do have to say, there's nothing wrong with buying other dolls you like before you go for your dream doll, since not everyone can or wants to get that doll right away, especially if it's a more expensive one. That being said, I don't think it's okay to limit yourself to buying only dolls in any particular price range if you're going to end up unhappy with the purchase. Someone who is only settling is probably not going to be as happy as someone who bought their dream doll, regardless of price. If you're buying a cheap doll that you only like as opposed to a more expensive one that you absolutely love, it's just as bad as buying a more expensive one that you only like as opposed to a cheaper one that you love. If you like the doll for it's looks and not the price, there's no problem with buying cheaper dolls, but if you're only buying them because of the price, it's a waste of money no how little it costs. There's not much sense in buying a doll you don't really care for just because it is inexpensive. And buying a doll just to have one is stupid, no matter the price.

And to psychicandroid: Nonono! Don't feel bad about that! You really shouldn't be bothered about being able to get a doll you really like for a low price. Heck, I'm pretty much in love with B&G's Ymir. He's actually the only 1/4 doll I've seen that I actually felt like I MUST have, and the price just seems like a bonus to me. And you know, there's really nothing wrong with getting other dolls you like before you get the one that you consider your dream doll. It's your choice and you shouldn't be made to feel bad about it.

      Edit: To Keanna:
I;m not entirely sure. Perhaps it is a combination of those reasons, the price and the feel. It seems as though some think others are silly or stupid for liking/wanting cheaper dolls, or that certain dolls aren't as good as others simply because of their look. Part of it is probably also due to the fact that some people seem to have an issue with any companies that aren't among the original few. Honestly, this just seems like snobbery to me, a kind of "My doll is better than your doll" attitude, which isn't true at all. It's as though the only good dolls are the ones that cost upwards of five or six hundred dollars. To be honest, I think part of it might be jealously over others being able to get dolls that look just as nice as more expensive BJDs for a lot less than they paid for a bigger name company's doll. I believe that the negative attitude towards less expensive dolls is made worse by the people who look to others to make sure that they're buying the "right" dolls so that they'll be more easily accepted and who will settle for the dolls they feel they "should" have rather than the ones they genuinely want, especially if those dolls happen to be cheaper ones. To me, people like that are just saying that it is okay for others to look down on companies that produce cheaper dolls and the people who buy those dolls. And to be perfectly honest, I often like cheaper companies' dolls more than the more expensive, bigger names in BJD making. Volks, for example, despite having a number of dolls, does not currently have a single mold that I like enough to buy, while B&G doll, which is much cheaper and has fewer molds, doesn't have one that I wouldn't want.

I'm not sure if all of this made sense, so if something is not entirely clear, I sincerely apologize.

    17. People always say that you should buy something you need or dearly want, regardless of price. I really don't think so... If you are just starting a doll collection, but the doll you want is really expensive, I think you should buy a cheaper doll. That way, you can practice making clothes for it, dressing it however you like, or modify it. Try out different techniques. Experience is the key. That cheaper doll just may turn out to be better than your dream doll.

    18. I can't speak for anyone else but for me, I can wait, I want what I want and if that means not having anything for a long time than so be it! I won't settle for ANYTHING. It has to be right. That's just me though, for others, buying cheaper dolls is right. I have no qualms with them.

    19. I'm actually fine if a person has a preference for more "cheaper" dolls than the more expensives ones. I don't think I personally should discriminate if another member has cheaper dolls because: one, I have no clue what the person's financial situation is, and two, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So if someone finds a "cheaper" doll far more beautiful than an expensive doll, I say, "Rock on!" Man, if the kind of BJDs I found were only $85 each, shoot....I would definitely have more than one now. Ha-ha-ha-ha! :)

    20. Honestly, thus far the dolls I am really impressed by are not limited, nor the highest price. Even if I had the resources to buy the most expensive dolls I'm afraid I haven't seen one which I would consider a dream doll.
Altogether I am spending $700.00 and change for my first resin doll.
I'm glad most of the posters here seem to believe in get what you like rather than what you think you are supposed to like.
If I thought this was the sort of place where I had to spend at least a thousand, and on the 'correct" sort of doll in order to be considered serious about the hobby, I would simply leave.
When it is all over, you are the one who has to live with the doll you bought. What you think of her or him is what matters.
