Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. Oooh I has a new one D:

What if it's a hybridised to be cheap doll? Does that count against all that 'allowing only to buy cheaper dolls'?

Because, in my opinion, people who usually cannot bond with their dolls, actually has a problem with bonding with the doll's looks. More specifically, the head.

What if, the doll itself is from an okay price range (i.e. Luts, Dollmore, Independent Artists) or a more expensive one (i.e. Volks), but is hybrided with a cheaper body (not temporarily) to lower the cost of actually owning the doll, rather than for character physique purposes?

Would it in in anyway be frowned upon like buying a cheaper doll because you only allow yourself to spend within such and such price range?

    2. Thats me, I buy cheaper dolls because I'm too impatient to save up. My MSD girl was totally an impulse buy, I had only been into BJDs for a couple of weeks and the first time I got a hold of $200 I bought the first doll I could find without shopping around because I wanted one NOW, and I didn't really care which one it was. Now she's laying in her box under my bed and hasn't seen the light of day in weeks. The second time I got a hold of a small fortune I splurged and bought an expensive head, and then a less than expensive body to go with it. The colors match wonderfully...NOT, but oddly enough I've grown to love her nonetheless and she gets all my attention unlike the poor forgotten MSD girl who I hope to never look upon again.
So, I think that people should spend their money on whatever the hell they want and if theyre only getting a doll because its cheap then theyre the ones paying the price later.

    3. That's a pretty interesting experience.
      But poor MSD......:(

    4. i find that interesting; because i own an mnf and a pukipuki, with the pukipuki costing less than the mnf, but i think youd find if you damaged a more expensive doll it wouldnt be 'worse' than damaging a cheaper doll. i love them both and it hurts me just as much if either is damaged or in danger of falling etc.

i dont plan to resell them, and i treat them well because they are irreplaceable (to me), not because theyre expensive. ^^

and i think this hobby means differant things to differant people. im certinaly not going to say its wrong to do something like Mimou mentioned, because in the end, im sure that was a learning curve. and who is it hurting? nobody. i would prefer it if people bought dolls they truly love regardless of price because that made me feel good. of course i want others to feel good too, so its natural id like to pass those values on. having something you totally adore and have loved, wanted and saved for for a long time is an amazing feeling; doll or not

its my hobby, key word being MY; i dont really mind what everyone else does with it, so long as theyre not banging their dolls with hammers

    5. Well, I just got into the hobby and my first doll is a Bobobie sprite, so yeah, she was cheap. But i fell in love with her ears and face, i was prepared to spend more on a doll. I think if you're geting into faceups & mods for the first time (like i want to do, someday) a cheaper doll would be better to practice on in case you did something terribly stupid and broke of an ear or something. But you should always by what you love... if your dream doll costs 800 bucks, ask yourself if that doll will bring you $800 worth of pleasure. If the answer is yes, then by all means scrimp and save and buy your doll. That being said, I do find it hard to justify buying a doll that costs more than a mortgage payment! The only problem with buying expensive dolls, or anything for that matter, is if you neglect your rent or run up a huge Visa bill that you can't pay off. My doll funds actually came from loose change. Seriously I had tons of it stashed all over the place that I had accumulated over the years. I luged it all to a Coinstar machine and converted it into over 500 dollers, no lie.

    6. I haven't run across any discrimination yet regarding my more inexpensive hybrids. Most of my doll family is hybridized, each for a different reason. (For my MNF girl, I wanted a doll without the "underwear" waist joint, for my Fin I wanted a curvier, shorter body than the Perennial body). However, my first hybrid was admittedly just for cost reasons. I had a floating head and Fantasy Doll released their Tobias body for such a low price I couldn't refuse. It was originally going to be an inexpensive stand-in until I could get him a "nicer" CP body, then sell the FDoll body... but I ended up LOVING it. I love his poseability, he stands so easily, and the skinny slumpy look works so well for his character. Some people might look down on a less expensive hybrid option, but I have been fortunate enough that I haven't experienced any yet. I think it's a perfectly viable option for those who love a high-end head sculpt but don't want to pay the price tag on a more expensive body.

    7. For me... it's a matter of expenses first of all. I'm a very poor poor working adult who barely gets enough to make dues but I enjoy this hobby. I really like the AoD Rao and she was fairly inexpensive. I also told myself to never buy an expensive doll because I have other things to save for (ie an apartment!). I wanted to start small with a pretty and inexpensive doll. I don't feel any sort of regret for buying a doll that was $175, it was better than $500. My dream doll was a Dolkot 60cm girl, I wow'd at her and lusted for her but I knew in my situation it was out of the question. I could use that $500 to fly to see my fiance. So I knew I had to back down for a while. I'll get my dream doll when I get a stable job, but for now, I am happy with my inexpensive AoD Rao. ^^

    8. I'd rather save up and have only one doll but one I love than have several cheap dolls that I don't love as much. If the one you really want is a lesser expensive doll.. how lucky that is!

    9. I don't see a problem if the lower price doll IS the doll that you fall in with

    10. I also feel that you should get whichever doll it is you love the most.
I always like to look for good deals on things I buy and tend to not spend a lot of money at once, but I still ended up buying the most expensive doll on my want list for my first.
I even had a friend urge me to buy a smaller/less expensive doll first to make sure I would really like BJDs. It was good advice financially speaking, but in the end I realized that if I didn't go for the one doll I truly wanted the most, I would just be disappointed and out $200 I could have put towards him instead. After all, I didn't choose him because he cost the most; I chose him in spite of it because I love him so much.
I'd love it if the dolls I wanted were cheaper, but there are so few that I would want to own in the first place that I can't tell myself to only buy the less pricey ones. I'd rather save up for the few I reeeaally want. :cake:

    11. I can certainly understand buy the less expensive of two dolls you may want first. Especially if the person in question is just venturing into the world of BJDs. A beginner doll that you can love and practice customizing, but that won't give you a heart attack it you mess up on it because you ate only dollar store brand ramen for 6 months so you could save up for it, seems like a wise choice. However, I also understand and support just going for it. Diving right in and going for that really expensive doll first because, dangit, that's the doll you want. Which is kinda what I did.

    12. I don't think cost really matters - if you really like the mold or features of a cheaper doll, than by all means, go for it! ^_^ It'll be easier on your wallet too.

I don't think I would neccessarily buy a doll 'just' because it was cheaper IF I really wanted another one instead - I would just have to save up for a little while and then get the one I really wanted. ^_^

    13. Well, I kind of have a little bit of a problem with people "restricting" themselves to cheaper dolls. It isn't my business, but I figure if you really want that $450+ doll, why not just go for it and make yourself happy?

I think spending that one time $450 is a little better than buying the equivalent in dolls that you don't want as much as that expensive one. Just seems as though one would be happier just getting the one they want.

I understand that people may not be able to afford it, but the money spent on those cheaper dolls could've gone to that one expensive one instead.

    14. I find I look at dolls and go "Ohh that would be sooo perfect for -insertOChere-!" and then add them to the list that grows just about every day. I find that I do prefer to look at the ones that don't cost as much first, see if there is a doll there that clicks. I recently found AoD, and was looking around there and stumbled upon Jimi. Oh dear lord Jimi was just what I was looking for for a certain character of mine. XD; Granted, I had been looking at the DollShe boys, but I noticed the price and was instantly turned away. (That and I saw nekkid pics and went "D: ohshizz it'll get me in the night!")

So.... I find that I'm swayed by price, but I do have my eyes on DoT's or Delf's... Eventually I'll save up for those dolls, but the less expensive ones will most likely come first.

As for restricting yourself to only the less expensive ones, it sort of narrows your selection, really. You'll probably get stuck with a doll that's easily breakable or yellows really fast. (Luckily this hasn't been the case with Fuyu, and he was only $290) But, I think people will eventually turn to the more expensive dolls over time, once they've gotten used to spending money on the dolls.

However, I don't think it's cool to get a doll that's priced lower just 'cause you want to have one. Doesn't matter what it is, as long as it's cheap and it's a doll. That's not so great. D:

Anyway, I apologize if this didn't make sense, it's almost midnight here. XD

    15. My mother has always told me to never to settle for anything less than what you love. Even now with dolls she tells me to get the one I love. Why? Becouse even thought life isnt fair you should do every little thing you can to be happy. ^^

    16. I hear a lot of people wanking about others wanting to buy cheap dolls because they are cheap.
A lot of people who buy cheap dolls can't afford more. Maybe they are kids who only get allowance, maybe they can't see themselves spending much money on an item like a doll. Most likely they've never had a doll before, too, so they couldn't see the "priceless" value of them.
I know I got into the hobby, saw the prices, and figured I'd go for the cheap ones. I sold them for more expensive ones that I loved more. Lesson learned.
People can buy whatever they want. Higher priced dolls will just go to people willing to pay those prices.

    17. That's completely my sentiment. I just ordered my second doll, NotDoll Lucy, who I bought because a) she was so cute! and b) she was only $130, and I really wanted another doll. I wouldn't have bought her if I didn't like her look, but no matter how cute, I couldn't afford a doll if s/he was $600 or something. It's not because I only /want/ cheap dolls. I'm a single parent living on a pension, buying a BJD is pretty far down my list of 'needs'. If I could afford a Volks LE, I'd snap it up. But it's not an option at the moment, so, cheap dolls only. Otherwise, I'd have to wait a year or more to buy one at all, if everything went well. So, a 'cheap' doll who I still associate with, means I can still buy what I need to, and have a BJD at the same time.

    18. Hello,
I have some kind of confusion with this. Since when is $200 cheap by any means ?? I buy the dolls I like because they are Aesthetically pleasing and of course price need be a factor . I don't want to go into debt for my hobby...that seems a little extreme to me.Also the word cheap implies less quality or somehow less fancy when I think that is bs. The more affordable dolls can and sometimes are as lovely and special as the really mega expensive dolls. My DD was by far my most expensive and she is vinyl and stained all too hell while my $200 fantasy dolls are gorgeous and full of potential and flawless. So was it a cheap call I think not . You don't have to buy "designer" to be in this hobby. I think there is nothing wrong with shopping around for affordable parts and dolls that can be customized and not leave you feeling regret. For me buyers remorse hits when you realize your dolls life is better than yours . I think they're beautiful and amazing and I love my "kids" but this is an expensive hobby and there are many options that are amazing and easier on your paycheck. This is just my opinion..I always try to find a deal so I can get more in the long run and not less all together.

    19. OK I guess you'll have to define "cheap" here...

I got a "cheap" doll.. He was st ill some $500 with the currency conversion (and yes I could have got him for a *"mere" $420 from the DZ site but I didn't want to worry about customs and **** so I got him from an EU agent) - but although I could technically afford the more expensive Dollshe Van (which I may eventually get anyway.. who knows?) I don't feel I got a bad dool for paying less.

Sure I didn't get *the* doll I first set my eyes on, but I do not in any way regret buying the one I did. Quite the contrary - it means I won't have to save up for too many months to get a second doll!

To be honest I find it's rather snobbish to look down on "cheap" dolls, since NONE of the BSD's are exactelycheap - or if they are then I need a redefinition of that word.. I'm certainly no Paris Hilton and $400 is a lot of money to me...

    20. I think the term "cheap" should be changed to "inexpensive" because cheap can be confused with poorly made or junk even. By no means are these dolls cheap or even inexpensive but $175 and lower is inexpensive for BJDs. I think anyway. I agree with juumou though in all honesty.
