Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. it is not cheap in general it is cheap compartively to other dolls. i think people need to remember that

    2. It totally depends on what you really want I think. If you buy a more affordable doll because it would be very hard for you get find the money for a more expensive one it's okay.

What I find would be a problem is if someone doesn't allow themselves to get the doll they really love even though they could afford it because they simply don't feel they have the right to get anything that good and expensive. That would be really sad I think. Like they feel they are not worth really good things happening to them. There's lots of people like that though I suspect they are not so common abong BJD people. LOL

I would say something like: You DO deserve the best you can get for yourself. You just need to figure out what is the most important for you and go for it. As long as it doesn't mean your children doesn't get what they need (need not want) or you can't pay your bills it's your money and they don't have any meaning until they are used for something. (Saving up to have money for an emergency is also using money IMO because they buy you a feeling of security.)

    3. it varies with each individual, there's no right or wrong.
if you happen to really like a certain doll and the price is in the so-called 'low range'. the money 'saved' might be spent on more clothes and accessories. it's a double bonus :love

most importantly, just make sure you love it ;)

    4. Well... alot of the dolls that I look at are considered "cheap". I personally prefer "inexpensive" but whatever. For me, I do look at the sculpts, to see which ones I like most. Don't get me wrong, DOD has beautiful dolls -though I"m not fond of the DOT male lips- Luts has some cuties that I would love to get one day--BUT, they're not my first choices, not by a long shot. I really love the Dollzone minis: Megi, Mo, Shoyo, Nina, and Fei. Those are some of my first choices, give or take DOC Krill or a KidDelf here and there.

Would I "settle" and get one doll (less liked, inexpensive) before I saved up for another doll (more liked, more expensive). Heck yeah! But for me, I don't see it as settling. If I like these two dolls, and I was planning on getting them one way or the other, what does it matter that I go out of order, for the sake of having a doll I want?

More expensive doesn't necessarily mean better or more breathtaking.

    5. I, myself can't afford any doll. As I'm only 14 and I live in a one income family, it's hard for me to get things that I want, so it usually means for me to save up for things, work and be cheap. :K
I'm actually a newb when it comes to these dolls, I just got interested in them a week ago. The first doll I saw was Senior Delf Blanchet, and I fell in love with her!
But I almost fell of my chair when I saw the price, 600$!? Holy crap! But, I couldn't stop thinking that I really really loved her, how she looked and all.
Tomorrow I'll try to convince my dad to pay for the other half (mum is paying half), and it's not going to be easy.
The point is, the price doesn't matter. The doll could cost 100$ and be ugly like hell in your eyes, but maybe in some other persons eyes the doll is beautiful!

    6. I dont buy cheap dolls and im real picky with my selection. If the price is cheaper then another company and the quality is superb is a different story for me. However if other people have a cheap doll but make it look presentable ill take a look, but i tend to ignore cheap dolls that look like nothing was done to them and there dull. It rather depends what u do to the doll even cheap dolls can be made to look okay.

    7. Well, being a beginner in this field of BJDs, I have until now restricted myself to only purchase the cheap dolls in order to find out wether or not BJDs were actually something for me. Now that I know they are, I will allow myself to buy more expensive dolls in the future, also because the more I study them, the more I realise that you get what you pay for. The expensive bodies are more detailed and beautiful, where the cheap bodies are more plain. At least that is what I think. people are different and each to his own etc. But I do feel that people should do what they feel good for with themselves. If they restrict themselves to sticking to cheap dolls they like because they would feel bad about paying double for a doll they love, then it is something they have to discuss with themselves and then do what they feel is right for them.

    8. IMO, I feel kind of guilty buying expensive things. I'd rather make them myself.

If I'm going to spend $500+ for a doll, I'd rather spend that on materials and make them myself. While I would love a professionally done BJD, it wouldn't feel quite right owning one at this early point in my life.

I dunno, I guess it was kinda just how I was raised...

    9. I could justify only buying cheaper dolls because I am a person who is more apt to spend money than save it, and saving at least $500 can prove difficult. However, I think if you really love a doll and it's more expensive, you should go for it over just buying the one you merely like. Once ordered the doll will be yours to cherish for some time, so it's definitely worth the longer wait saving up :)

    10. When it comes to dolls I don't even bother looking at the price XD
If I want her, nothing will stop me!

When it comes to other people sticking to 'cheaper' dolls I applaud them!
They allow themselves to indulge in something they love without going overboard ;)

    11. I think people should use their money how they like on things like this.

Honestly, as a poor college student, I can't blame you.
As long as you're happy with who you bring home, it shouldn't matter how much he/she costs.

    12. I agree completely.

My dream doll, literally, is a Puki Pushika. It's not the most expensive on the market, not by any stretch, however, it's the one I fell head over heels for.

If you're going to get into this hobby, some think it's easier to start with a smaller budget, find a sculpt that they like in a "cheaper" price range, then begin lusting, or saving, towards the one they really, really love.

I'm not going to discount them for thinking that, and good luck to them.

If you find a sculpt in a "cheaper" price that strikes your fancy, then get it, love it, be happy with it, etc.

If the sculpt that knocks you over with love is on the higher priced side, and you justcan'tlivewithoutit, then save up, get it, love it, all that jazz.

It all comes down to love, really. Love what you get, and you won't be dissapointed.

    13. All I can afford are cheaper dolls, so I try to stay in the lower range of things. I'd love to be able to have the option of some of the more expensive dolls, but it's just not plausible for me. xD It just limits my choices a little bit, that's all -- I'll still love my doll.

    14. I, personally, don't believe price should come into play when considering what doll you're going to buy. Thus I don't think "cheap" dolls should be as controversial as they seem to be.
Like previously stated, they aren't exactly cheap, just less expensive in comparison to other dolls. And it doesn't matter, really. As long as you're not buying a bootlegged doll, there's nothing wrong with purchasing a less expensive doll.

I'll use Bobobie dolls as an example, simply because I'm shamelessly in love with them. They're well known for making some of the most inexpensive BJDs out there, but I don't think they should be looked down upon at all because of this - If anything they should be respected more for allowing a broader audience of people from various incomes to purchase a doll and immerse themselves in the BJD hobby. Bobobie dolls are not of any lesser quality - in fact, I've heard their resin praised over the resins of larger, more expensive companies! And for good reason - the resin is lovely - silky smooth and pure.

Sorry if I seem overly adamant about this topic, but, in all honesty, I kind of am. It bothers me when a doll's price causes people to look down upon it or question whether or not someone should buy them.
What really matters is whether or not you like the doll - simple as that. ;)

    15. I think you can buy cheap doll and make her look beautiful. All that LE often just another faceup plus some outfit, who stop you to do the same? I do think dolls price is not the factor - owner creativity is.

    16. Hi, I started out buying some cheaper dolls first (Obitsu Haruka and Dollzone) and I was only going to stick to them because I didn't want to spend a lot of money but the more I found out about the more expensive dolls & found more doll manufacturers, the more I wanted them, so I saved up and got them anyway - so much to sticking to the cheaper dolls. I love my cheaper dolls as much as the more expensive ones. There IS a difference in quality to some degree but it's not much - it's mostly in the fineness and detail of the hand and joint sculpts. I think you either bond with doll or not, you either love the face or not - the price has nothing to do with it. There are many dolls that are cheaper that are just gorgeous and bring as much joy to the owner as their more expensive counterparts.

    17. I really believe in the rule of quality vs quantity. Not that the less expensive dolls are of lesser quality, I don't mean that. I would rather save up for a doll I really wanted, no matter what the price, then settle for 2 or 3 of some that I also like because they are cheaper and I can afford more.

    18. If there is a doll i want that costs to mutch i rather save money untill i have enough than buy a cheaper doll that i don´t like that mutch... I hope you all understand my poor english=)

    19. Expense doesn't necessarily make a doll more attractive. My first doll was an Angelregion MSD and it was "cheap" at around $300, which for me was pricy, since previous dolls were fashion dolls. For me it was his physical appearance that made him attractive, not solely because he was cheaper. Volks produces some nice dolls but honestly for one of the limiteds I can purchase two others from different companies, dolls which I will enjoy just as much. It really comes down to personal preference and what doll really interests you.

    20. It's an interesting question. For me personally, I've been off and on obsessed with these dolls for the past couple of years, but have never bought one. Not because I don't have plenty of cash (I have more than enough) but because I just have a lot of difficulty justifying to myself all that money being spent on something I don't need, but just really want. Especially when money isn't easy to come by, or at least is hard enough to save, and there are so many other things I could do with it. "Practical" things, like a down payment on a house.

I'm back on the boards again because I may actually do it this time. I might actually break down and buy a doll.

But we won't say until it happens, because I could very well scare myself out of it a third time.

Anyway! What I'm trying to say is, I am much more likely to spend money on a doll that costs less, because it costs less. But also I wouldn't bother spending even the smaller amount if I didn't absolutely adore the doll and covet it like all get out. I might add, as well, that I do a lot of research and even though I would prefer to buy a less expensive doll, I don't want one that is going to be immobile or fall apart or nasty things like that.

I'm no philosopher, so that's just my completely personal opinion and way of doing things. I'm frugal, to put it nicely.:kitty2:
