It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. I don't really look at the price when it comes to dolls. When a certain doll captures my heart, then I'll work hard to get him/her regardless of her price. :)

    2. I'm sorry, I can't give you much advice on how to actually enter lotteries.
I've never actually participated in a lottery before. But I'm sure you can ask other Volks owners or by a quick search on the forums :)

    3. Hmm, I've heard a lot about the 'lottery'
What are we all taking about when we mention it?
I'm so confused (When I think 'lottery' I think Texas Two-Step or scratch-offs)

Urgh, there's a doll that I'm lusting after, but I'm not sure if I want/need a heavy two-foot-tall doll. I love him to DEATH already, but I can see Emma getting frustrated because I have to make her and him share a carrying case (Emma is always free, and I always carry my dolls with me)

    4. In this case they mean the Volks lotteries held after every Dolpa to let people try their hand at the chance to buy limited dolls released at that event. Go to any Dolpa discussion thread and you'll hear a lot more about it ;)

    5. I only buy cheap doll, because even though I want a 500+ dollfie, If I am not completely satisfied with it, I'll feel ripped off. However, my first bjd is a Bobobie Apollo, and I shelled out $250 dollars for it. I am satisfied because he is beautiful, however I do have issues with a cheaper doll. (mostly elastic, but worth every single penny and then some!)

    6. I think that if the doll that you love is more expensive, you could use the money for the cheaper doll and try to save up more. I'm looking at a cheaper doll that has gotten many good reviews, but I love to research different dolls and companies and there is a doll on my list that's a fullset for $880... I guess I'm one of those people who think about buying cheaper dolls that they like instead of the one they love. I guess I think that saving up money and then looking for a doll might be a good idea because of limited edition or new models coming out.

Personally I would wait till I had the funds.

    7. A lot of people seem to have that worry in this thread (buying a more expensive doll, and being out $500+ if you don't like it) but that's not really true. BJDs dont loose their value, and even broken and damaged dolls sell for almost as much as a new one. If you didnt like the doll, you could easily resell it and try a different one.

    8. I don't really care either way LoL
If you want a cheaper doll, get it and love it just the same~
If you want an omgexpensive doll like Bermann or Volks or whatever, and you want to save up and buy him/her, then do so and be glad ya did ;)
If you realize you can't realistically purchase an expensive doll and that you have better things to spend your money on, but you wouldn't mind having a "here and now" companion that's pretty cute, too, then good for you. You're responsible. LOL.

That's my take on it. ^^

    9. I couldn't of said it better myself!

      I totally agree. ^.^:)

    10. I don't think it really matters what the price is as long as you love them; Less expensive dolls can be loved and treasured just as much as expensive ones.

I like Luts dolls and they aren't cheap. I wish they weren't so expensive, but I love them and that's what counts. I mean, can you really put a price on love?

    11. Complete newbie comment here....

I became interested in actually getting a doll several months ago. I saw two that I loved from Buddy-doll that would be utterly perfect as the two main characters in the novel I'd just finished. The price of the dolls and the additional bucks for customization put them smartly out of my budget. Do I still want them? Darn tooting I do, but it's not an option for me at this point. So, I looked and sighed and lusted after them and felt a little heavy of heart that I couldn't have them and told myself maybe someday....

Then, while poking into various doll sites, I stumbled into AoD. I clicked on the sub categories out of curiosity (as I have for all doll sites I've visited) and lo and behold, I saw a doll that bore a striking resemblance to another of my OC's. The price was much more do-able and, for me, starting with a less expensive doll is a better way for me to go. He's also a smaller doll and I like that idea as well.

I've also heard good things about AoD. I think that's my biggest deciding factor over cost. If the quality of the doll is good and the face appeals to me, then cost isn't as big an issue although it will still play a factor. I've seen some expensive dolls that I thought were fugly and wouldn't touch with a ten foot cattle prod, yet others adored them.

Love/lust/want is a highly individual thing no matter the object of that affection. What makes your heart go pit-a-pat can leave another person cold. As long as you're getting what you want, does it really matter how many clams you shelled out for it?

    12. A nice way to put it! My budget only permits me to love high end dolls from afar tho. I do derive a great deal of satisfaction from getting a doll I love at a price I like. And it doesn't have to be New or Pristine to catch my eye.

      Good discussion!

    13. For my doll i tried to limit myself on price because i had never owned one so buying a 400+ doll would be bad since i hardly new how to properly handle and care for one and i'm 14 so i can't get a real job and it would have taken forever to save for one. I'm very happy that i got my bobobie. She's great and i didn't have to wait as long for her. Once i'm older and can get a real job i might try for something that's expensive but i like my "cheaper dolls just as much as one that would be more expensive

    14. I have always been the type of person who, once they know the usual prices of things, will become very suspicious of cheep things. It's sort of like a defense mechanism, to help save yourself from scams. Not that I'm saying cheep dolls are scams, WAY from it. That was just something I've learned about other products. Being suspicious is better than paying for it later.

But I digress. There are many cheaper dolls out there that have just as much detailing as those two hundred dollars more, but there are also plenty of cheaper dolls who are as some people have said, less detailed, simpler, less refined. But really, I have to admit, I have really only felt that way about bodies. From what I have seen, more expensive bodies tend to be more aesthetically pleasing. Generally. For me this does not include faces. Sure, there are a ton of, say, Bobobie head sculpts I really, really don't like, but I could say the same for Luts *hides* and Volks. Actually, I think my dislike ratio is pretty much exactly the same between big expensive companies and smaller, cheaper companies. They are not aesthetically pleasing to me, and I am an artist as well (since a good number of people seem to like throwing that out). I tend to like the more out there, not mainstream pretty boys and girls (actually... I generally have a great dislike for girl head scuplts. I'm finding it so hard to find good girls for my characters out there.). I love large noses, on boys and girls (though bigger noses on boys *pokes them*), more square or circular faces, not the typical heart and "ideal" face shapes, big mouths, all sorts of stuff that isn't typical ideal beauty. I especially love features that are not Asian or Caucasian (but that is a completely different discussion). Truth be told though, I'm very picky, and depending on the skill used to create the features I lean more towards I may love it or hate it.

... So basically what I'm trying to say is, it's everyone's own opinion (as has been said a bajillion times by now... don't know why I bothered to put my two cents in). And though some things you can do the money=quality/asthetics correlation, that's not how it always works, just like in life.

The dolls that have caught my eye are more average to low costing dolls, with only one or two more expensive ones I dream about one day saving up for. Who really cares? If you or another person loves a doll sculpt why be rude to them about how expensive it is? It's pointless and just rude.

And... I think I'll shut up now... >.o

    15. I have tried buying cheaper for myself, i feel immensely guilty when buying expensive dolls, so cheaper is better i thought until i realized buying cheaper=being able to buy more=spending the same amount of money i would have on 1 really expensive one! You cant win lol! Best thing to do is buy the doll you love not the doll you like regardless of cost even if it means saving!

    16. Hmmmm, I bought a 'cheaper' doll for a few different reasons.

      1. I wanted a more mature looking doll.

      2. She was cheaper(and prettier) than other 'mature' bodied dolls(with legs that don't stop!)

      3. I had to have her.

She's more gorgeous to me now than when I was dreaming of her. I still stare at her and admire the beauty of her craftsmanship even 3 years later. I'm completely smitten!

      ^_^

    17. im going to buy a sharon B&G doll, i think he is a cheap doll!?,but for me he is SUPEREXPENSIVE...
i need to sell all my anime figures ToT
i just need to get my mothers agree...

    18. I intend to study abroad in a few years, but to do this, I'll have to save a lot of money. I do not think it is wrong for me to buy myself a cheaper doll because of this, rather than waiting till I'm forty and able to buy that expencive doll I'm dreaming about. People talk down about others who buy themself dolls just to be part of the community, and being able to say they have one, but isn't the other things about this hobby, like sewing clothes and taking pictures a just as important part of it as having the exactly right doll?

    19. I agree 100%!

    20. Speaking as someone who just used part of her college overpayment check to purchase her first doll, I do not have a problem with people who buy cheaper dolls. Quite frankly, I can't afford to spend more than $350 on a doll, and even that is a massive stretch for me. I have to work to justify it.
