Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. This is a benefit of the budget I hadn't even thought of until you mentioned it!

If price had never been an object for me, I probably would have bought a doll way back when I initially encountered them (and started to want one). This was back when Volks was the only company that I knew was out there, and even then I wasn't that fond of Volks' molds (and didn't know there was anything but human dolls out there). I would have gotten one, and maybe done a little with it, and then tossed it aside because I got bored and it wasn't quite what I wanted.

Because I couldn't afford to drop whatever I wanted on a doll, though, I kept looking around, and finally discovered elf dolls (and then the Sprite mold that was PERFECT for what I wanted). I'm really enjoying my dolls now, way more than I would have if I'd never done any shopping around, and I keep finding more wonderful dolls by shopping around.

    2. Responsible doll purchases are responsible.

I think there is a fine balance in this hobby between responsibility and satisfaction. if you are say fro example, a high schooler, saving for uni with a pittance of a part time job..? clearly the doll priorities woudl be different form a well established mature collector who works 40 hours a week.

I think it can be difficult for some to be satisfied with what they are capable of getting. There is nothing wrong with setting realistic doll goals. There is also nothing wrong with saving for 2 years or more for that LE doll that will steal your heart forever.

My bottom line is, different collectors have different priorities. knowing those priories, and knowing what you are capable of spending without being irresponsible with your expenditures is key.

    3. i feel that the price doesn't really matter =O
What is important is whether you like the mold and whether there is "feel" or it
no point buying a expensive doll and you don't like it as much eh?

    4. I never expected to want to spend $400+ on a doll, but that is what I am getting ready to do.
I never expected to spend $200 on a doll, but sometimes, you can't choose who you fall in love with. My heart belongs to Yo-SD Kun, and I would buy her at any price.
Of course, if funds are a problem and someone really wants a doll, then there is no problem restricting yourself to a cheaper one!

    5. I'm one of the the people that get the cheaper dolls. For me, it was that I didn't have a lot of money to spend but I knew I really want one. I bought my first at dollectable. I went there with 400 bucks not knowing what I wanted. So I like to say my soulkid Miribyeol found me! Yes there were some nice SD sized dolls that I would've liked but I couldn't afford them. I have no regrets cuz now I'm hooked on msd size (especially since I found a msd sized bed from IKEA, you had to build it yourself and everything).

Someday I'd like to go all out and get that "dream doll" but for this time in my life, my mini sized girls are practical and lovable enough for me!

    6. i know people who buy their dolls always looking the price, they buy cheaper dolls but i think that if you save more time and buy a doll that you really want it's better than to have 3 cheap dolls that you don't like...

    7. What about having three 'cheap' dolls you truly love instead of one more-expensive one? There are a lot of dolls people call 'cheap' that are extremely lovable and a delight to customize. If a person is primarily interested in doing dramatic multi-character photostories, for instance, then holding out for one expensive doll would be a mistake.

My 1/3 'dream doll' is coming, and I spent far more on him than I care to rationalize. I am fraught with anxiety regarding whether he will be all my expectations have built him up to be, and I sure hope I won't end up wishing I'd used that money to get more 'cheap' tinies I know I will adore, like a rainbow of BBB Nissae, a Tinybear merboi, or more Pukis. I am, however, really looking forward to trying a faceup on his event hed without having to constantly peer thru a magnifier and painting with 00000 brushes!

    8. I personally wouldn't "only" buy cheap dolls myself JUST because they were cheap. I buy dolls because I like them,- buying a doll that doesn't make me say "WOW", won't make me happy. But maybe other people feel different about that... I don't know...

      ^^

    9. I think you should buy whatever doll you want, despite the price.
I'm sorta stupid because I never consider price a factor in my dollie expenditures if I can afford it.

Oh my, I was born with expensive taste. I think in the long run, though, it has helped me to save for the things I really want instead of rushing into something I consider less desirable.

    10. If I see a doll I like, I'll start saving for it.
If you buy a doll that's cheap just because it's cheap, that's different.
But, it's your money, so you can do whatever you want with it.

    11. For my first doll it needed to be below $400, but I fell in love with a DZ Hid so it was perfect! I now only collect SD's though as they are my personal preference for size. As long as the doll isn't outrageously expensive (I think my current limit on a single doll is $800) if I fall in love with that mold then there's no thing keeping me from it. So I guess what I'm saying is, don't buy a doll because it's cheap just so you can say, "I have a bjd now I'm part of the community! :D" Buy a cheap doll only if you are really attracted to it and then it's fine who cares what the price tag is?

    12. I'm with the 'save cash for what you truly love'

but still, I'd like a lil doll too and I'm finding Puki much too expencive , hes costing like , half of what I payed my DZ Hong ... so I went looking and fill in love with BBB tinies, not becouse only the price was good tho, also becouse they lookes most amazing in my eyes , that counds as 2 sides hmm

    13. hn - I have a Puki Pukisha, and Orientdoll So Ye and a BBB Nissa. I luv each of them, but the Puki and the Nissa are not really the same critter at all. Puki's much smaller (he will fit Kelly outfits easily, wheras they are 'way too small for Nissa) and -with the mag parts and changeable faceplates- a very different design from Nissa, who is more of a 'straight' BJD.

It's not fair to either to think of one as a 'substitute' for the other. Bobobie is a great company that is doing an amazing job of making affordable and charming dolls in a rainbow of beatiful colours; Fairyland Pukis are a 'class' act from the second you unwrap the box (it's a storybook! :D) and they pose 'like magic' too. Little Haiku, my Orientdoll is somewhere between the two (but with four different sets of wings, w00t!).

The 3 of 'em add up in dollar value to one 'big' doll, maybe, but I would not trade them for the world!

    14. Actually, Im having the same problem right now. Im going to buy my first doll soon, and im looking at a "cheap" one and a relatively expensive one. I think i might end up buying the cheap one first, because i can get the money faster you know? if you love both dolls then... i dont know... i want to buy the "cheap" one to know what it feels like to own a bjd faster hee hee. But thats just my take on it.

    15. I see nothing wrong with buying a cheaper doll at all. If it's just not possible for you to save $500 do to your life situation, I'd say it's better to have a cheaper doll than none at all.

    16. Well, I don’t think that the Bjd hobby is a cheap one in any sense of the word. Right now I have my first Bjds on their way, two in the mail and two being made at the moment. They are all four Bobobie, and with the price of the dolls, wigs for all four and four pairs of shoes (I plan on making clothes) I spent about 500-600 bucks this week. That to me isn’t cheap, as a matter or fact I don’t dare tell my parents how much they really cost, they would have a few choice words for me…even though it’s my money.
I got lucky that the four that I just bought are a good price, but even more importantly I really love the look of all four of them, I always focus on faces and the possibilities of that face. I have already began looking at other dolls, I got four girls and I’d like a couple boys. I think it’s great when someone can find a doll they love that has an affordable price. I also think that if a doll you really love would require you to save, you should. Having something you love is much better than saving a little money and buying a doll that you’re going to lose interest in because you aren’t crazy about it.

    17. YAY! So reading this made me feel so much better...over the last few months i have come across so dolls that i really love. And now that i am planning on ordering my first doll the thought of spending the 1k + for my first doll kinda shook me.. so i decided on the less expensive doll for my first.. I kinda felt like a cop out...but now i know i really do love both and the more expensive doll will come eventually :)

    18. hm yes I love your point, to me posing is a very important thing ! well I havent really chozen or paid jet, I would not mind saving up for a Puki but I'll have to look around some more for one I truly adore then. I'v seen some great pictures of BBB's tineys, so atm I might just be confused by who to chose :doh

nono thats true ! I'm just a nooby starting out, and even tho I'm watching my paychek I too would only buy a doll I love, the only limit would be 800 euro's, unless it really special. oddly enough thers only a rarety of faces I like in the more expencive rate, as I recently went nuts over RS Mei who copleetly looks like a char of mine *faint* you see, I only buy a doll if it resembles a char of mine, I think the only exeption would be the Puki/tiney couse I love dragin a doll with me (I'm odd like that yeah xD, and I would totaly love to have one, dress it and most of all pose and photo graph it <3 )

    19. I was re-reading this thread and still agree with others who have said; regardless of price, we buy the doll(s) we love ~ and if they happen to be cheap on the scale of things well so be it.

BUT ~ this has left me wondering ~ how very sad it would be if there are actually people who fall in love with a doll but won't buy it because it is or is considered to be cheap. :sorry

    20. No one should ever be made to feel bad over the price of their doll. It would make my husband infinitely happy if my dream dolls were cheaper.
