Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. Honestly, i think that the "cheaper dolls" can be beautiful, really, with the right makeup. I see a expensive dolls with a awfull makeup and the owners so happy with them... So, Why I can't be happy with my "cheaper" dolls? ^_^

    2. If I had the money to buy any doll, then it wouldn't be an issue, but because I am relatively poor, I have to stick to the "cheaper" dolls. That doesn't mean I love my Miko any less though

    3. I've been looking at these dolls for a long time, and tes, I hace been put off by the prices. I don't make a lot of monry, and there are always more important things it should go to, even when I have tried to save up. Those savings always went elsewhere, faster than I could put more in. So yes, I have limited myself. Fortunately, some of the cheaper companies have put out faces that I adore, and I just ordered my first. $135 does not seem like a huge amount, especially for a girl on whom I'll be doing my first resin face-ups (I've painted faces before on vinyl and porcelain) and for whom I'll probably be making all the clothing, wigs, and other things.

I don't see anything wrong with this. There are some beautiful faces in a *much* more affordable range than the lovelies that first caught my interest, and I don't think I should feel guilty about buying something that fits into a price range that I can justify.

For that matter, looking back at the faces I used to dream about, I am so very happy I didn't get them. They just ... don't do as much for me now.

    4. Hello! Just a note I'm enjoying my DenOfAngels time after being SO busy, but on this topic, I wanted to offer my view. I have both the inexpensive BJD's and some more expensive dolls.... My most expensive to date have included 3 sybarites (which I do count as BJD's but in a different way), and a Unidoll Feanor. He (Unidoll) has become the light of my eyes as he is so well crafted & handsome too!!

I think my more inexpensive ones are just as fine. I feel a person should purchase on taste, not $$$. I've been on both sides of the financial coin and I will only buy dolls that 'appeal' to me. I have two tiny Uyoos and a few Goodreaus. and each one has it's unique personality to me and I would find it hard to trade or sell now that they have established themselves in my household (grin!)...

Anyhow, that's my two cents on the subject. I love to hear everyone's comments. No right, no wrong, just a common love of the little ones!

    5. I think there is nothing wrong with buying less expensive dolls. Some people can't afford them and they shouldn't feel that they MUST have an expensive dolls because I've seen a lot of 'cheap' dolls that look just as good as more expensive ones. It's all in the sculpt and the way the faceup is done. I don't think price has anything to do with it.
And as long as the person who has the doll likes it, then it's okay. :]

    6. agree with fictfactional.
it is not wrong to buy a cheaper dolls.
some bjd owners are not so rich as others, thus they are restricting themself to buy a cheaper dolls. it is not easy to restrict urself to get a cheaper bjd, when ur other bjd friends are getting branded expensive bjds.
thus they tend to feel more stressed themself. so i oso do hope to highlight to some bjd owners that, pls do not put down or discriminate other bjd owners who are getting cheaper and low branded bjds, when u urself have a expensive bjd. (i seen tt kind of situation live in front of me before, it is really demoralising and sad)

and there are some cheaper bjds looks as good as the expensive bjds. that depends on the clothings, sculpt, faceup.

i personally have the cheap (AA) and the expensive bjd (DOI).. but i like my AA boy as much as my DOI boy^^

    7. I've never restricted myself to only inexpensive dolls, I generally just save up for whatever mold I like. I can understand peoples commitment to staying on the less expensive side, though- not everyone has enough money to buy a limited edition doll that they love or even dolls from more expensive companies.

I'd gladly buy from Bobobie, I like their molds- I can't see myself not deviating into anything more expensive though.

If I were low on cash, and I wanted a BJD, I'd find one I liked from a less expensive company and get it rather than bother with something I perceived to be an unrealistic goal for myself at that point in time.

    8. You know though, I'm really beginning to question the truthfullness of this statement as it pertains to tinies.

I've had a lot of "mid price" to "not cheap" dolls on the market listed as WTS/WTT and I always, always get many more offers of people wanting to trade me their cheaper dolls for them. It's always that onslaught rush of first pms, people trying to bail on their "cheaper" dolls.

Now, I'm in no way saying that dolls that are less expensive are bad, but so far (other than Puki basic sets) they just aren't really my taste... and I'm sure you can understand me not appreciating someone offering a considerably lower priced doll for my considerably higher priced one.

But it seems to me that their lower price tag HAS allowed people to rush in a bit more than they would have with another, higher priced brand... and I've really come to doubt that all of these people bought the mold they *loved*.

I'm more of the opinion that they at least liked the mold, and *loved* the price tag in terms of instant gratification.

How many threads have we had where people mention how impatient they are?
I could definitely see people buying cheaper dolls because they can buy them faster, vs. buying the doll they might truly want and having to wait for it.

Don't get me wrong though, I have nothing against any doll, no matter what the price tag is. I'm just saying I don't quite buy into this "we only buy the mold we love" mentality being mentioned here, I think it's probably more like 50% of the buyers feel "I really love this mold" and the other 50% think "I can get THIS ONE so much faster!!!"

    9. I've been rereading this thread also, because I just ordered a relatively inexpensive doll. I'm just as excited as if I'd spent double or even triple the amount I did. It's not ever about the money for me, but lots of people still look down on the less expensive dolls and assume that the owner is either very young or hard up for money if they own one. I don't understand why some people simply cannot believe that anyone would love the face of a cheap doll. Maybe if I photograph my new girl with my Bermann, people might believe that I really, really like her despite her low cost.

    10. I agree. ^ ^

I've seen hundreds of people with impatience issues when it comes to buying dolls where they don't feel like waiting and they buy a place holder just so they could have one. Sure, they love it while its there but once there's a chance to get the one they wanted from the start, the starter doll is aside in most cases, I'm sure.

That practice never made much sense to me. Never has and never will.

I've seen some people argue that they're so impatient they would've lost interest if they couldn't get one then and there, and they weren't going to drop X amount of money on something they didn't know they were going to like.

From my experience, you'll be sheithing bricks when they get there as long as it's the one you've really wanted and will be happy if you do your homework overall about the hobby itself, the upkeep of dolls, and the info on the quality and quirks of the company you're ordering from.

I've always advocated just going after the one you really want, and not waste your time trying to be cheap if you have an expensive taste. My friend did it with her first doll, she wound up hating the thing. You could lose $50 or so if you don't like it and sell it, but it's a risk some of us don't mind taking. At least we're not settling for one and still starry-eyed for the other, ne?

It's not like you can't sell it later and you're doomed for all eternity to have something you don't like sitting on the shelf in your room staring at you every day, you know? Especially if you take exceptionally good care of it. You can probably recoup your losses almost completely. =/

    11. True, but even so there may be those people who truly wanted a doll and bought it not minding that it was cheaper, but felt that they should buy a more expensive doll to "fit in" or because they're more "exclusive" (they want the best doll, the prettiest doll, a limited doll, etc.). That may not be the case all the time, but I've seen it happen.

And I do think that there are people who buy a cheap doll as a "starter" doll--a doll to learn from (care, keeping, customizing)--and then they want a more expensive doll once they know how to handle them. I might be inclined to do that myself, so that I have a doll to experiment with and I can keep my regular doll for playing and photos and whatnot.

Personally, I'm happy with the doll I bought--I may buy a cheaper doll or I may buy a more expensive doll. I buy the doll that feels right to me, not the doll that's more expensive (to have "the best doll") or cheaper (to save money).

    12. I personally don't have a lot of money to spend (I have enough, but not tons), so I'm saving up to buy (and will have to save up for every doll I buy, probably). I'm saving for the ones I really WANT though, not just getting something just because it's cheaper/I can have it faster/etc. I know if I just bought a less expensive doll because it was less expensive, I'd be disappointed.

I am sticking with Mini size ones, though, partly because of price and partly because of space in my house (check back in a year or two to see how that works out, LOL!).

I admit to being extremely tempted to just go ahead and get a Puki, because of impatience. I definitely plan to get a Puki eventually as part of my crew, but it's not first on my list of dolls. I could have just ordered one outright last month, though, and not even been concerned about it and probably have had it home by now.

I can limit myself to buying dolls I have the money for, but I'm not going to only buy the "cheapest" dolls available. I have to love the faces!

    13. There's no shame in buying dolls that are less expensive; it doesn't necessarily mean that you are any less devoted to the hobby than someone who buys a very expensive doll. For me personally, I'm interested in smaller dolls, in the 27 cm range. Because they're small, they also happen to be less expensive. I don't like them because they are less expensive, I just like smaller dolls. When someone pours energy into customization into a doll they paid relatively less for, how can anyone call them cheap?

    14. Even though my doll is one of the cheaper ones, I fell in love with him the second I saw his image on ebay. Not to mention his plastic counterpart screamed "That's Me!" :) (msd sized and $200)

    15. One of the reasons, I got a DZ Megi 2 was that he wasn't terribly expensive. It seemed a wise choice when I wasn't really certain that I'd get heavily into bjds as a hobby. The other reason was he was absolutely ADORABLE in the pics and I was all MINE! MINE! MINE!

For myself personally, I really can't justify spending over 600 on a doll. But that is my personal feeling and if someone else wants to spend more that is their choice. I would however be really aggressive to someone who blew me off as "cheap" or a "wannabee" just because I didnt put out a grand on a Volks or whatever. You enjoy your hobby your way and I'll enjoy it my way, Thank you very much!

    16. I guess my entire crew could be considered 'cheap', well, only one of my lot cost more than $200 ^^; However, the price is absolutely nothing to me. I might be poor as anything and have to put aside some of my meagre wages to save up for even the cheapest one, but price is no factor in me buying dolls. I buy based upon the mould of the doll, their faces, if they fit the idea that I have for them (and haven't failed on that front yet thankfully). I admit that my first doll (obitsu haruka) was the typical 'buy a cheaper one so that I can learn more about them' purchase, however that does not mean I neglect him or tried to flog him off for another doll, he's still here, giving me evils with his one eye (and making me cringe at my first attempt at a faceup). The fact that the moulds that seem to catch my eye are of the cheaper variety doesn't mean anything and should really not matter. I buy what I love, and so should other people buy those they love, whether they are $600 or $60.

    17. I think that it's perfectly fine to "restrict" yourself to less expensive dolls (I use the word "restrict" lightly because all dolls I've found are expensive. Seeing as dolls are an expensive hobby no matter how you look at it, there's nothing wrong with buying the less expensive ones. Sure, they may not be French resin, and they may not hold as much prestige, but they need love just as much as the higher-end dolls and, aside from material, are probably quite technically similar. For those that can afford more expensive dolls, I can honestly and non-sarcastically say that I'm happy for you. For everyone else, perhaps it would be wise to keep your dream doll in mind, but find a cheaper, still dreamy doll to purchase. All dolls can be loved.

    18. I'm new to this hobby, and dont have any dolls yet. But I actually found out that there are cheaper dolls! It was surprise for me, since I was sure that cheapest one is around 400-500-600$
About if people restricting themselves - I think people can buy only things then can afford, so they buy cheaper dolls if cant afford expencive ones, but still want to have dolls. On the other hand, person can buy all doll he (she) wants, without considering price.
I think its same story as with anything else.
Also, it might be better to have one expencive and better-looking doll (if looks really depend on price) then several of lower quality just because those are afordable.
All mentioned above is just me thoeretical thought on the matter. :)

    19. I had this dilemma while searching for the right mold for little Atsuko. There were two sculpts I felt were the most compatible with the character--A Luts Kid Delf Woori, or a Volks MSD FCS F21. It was agonizing because I knew about Luts' price adjustment on their dolls, and I was so tempted to go on with the much cheaper alternative--but I had a feeling that in the end I would regret doing that. The F21 practically screamed for me, so I'm going for her instead. I'll do whatever it takes to bring her home!

But then there's this other character I've been searching for, and the best mold I've found for her was the Volks Rozen Maiden Shinku doll. No. Just no, that's too much. I love the sculpt, but I don't think I want her THAT badly. I'm sure there's a less expensive alternative sculpt out there that can work just fine for Lady if I keep looking. Maybe. Hopefully. :(

Never entered this hobby for the sake of impressing other people to begin with.

    20. I don't think it's bad if people chose a cheaper doll instead of the one they really want which is more expensive.
I myself am after alot of Resinsoul dolls, which are quite cheap (but good quality might I add) but not because they're replacements. I just love these.
But I did notice that by doing this I put off buying a more expensive doll I want. But I will save up for her later.

But per example, I want a SOOM Beryl SO bad, but there is no way I can get the money and as the time goes by, she will be worth even more. So I decided to get a cheaper doll and mod her. In that case I think it's a good solution, but if you know you're going to regret not buying the more expensive doll, then start saving
