Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. I think, just as long as they actually like the dolls they're getting, whether they only go for inexpensive dolls, or buy whatever doll they like, that's all that matters. If what's on the person's mind is "Meh, I guess that doll will do, considering I only have $100...." then chances are high, they're going to sell that doll soon. Price can be a deciding factor, it just shouldn't be the *only* deciding factor.

I personally would just wait the extra months and buy the doll I really want than to settle for something I'm only half-hearted about but with a low price tag.

    2. I don't even have my first doll yet, though I've been oggling them off and on for a while now. (My problem like a lot of people is that I really find it difficult to justify the price tag to myself), Especially since my favorite dolls are six, seven hundred dollars. I'm thinking of getting a Pipo's "Robin", as my first doll. They're really cute, even though I don't normally create non human characters, and it would also fit as a sort of tease based on two characters from a story I created for National Novel Writers Month.
It's not my 'ideal' doll, but I think I'd have a lot of fun with one, and it would take up a lot less room while I've got other things to worry about.

    3. I have been looking to buy my first doll for a while now and price has become an issue in a way. I have been looking at a KDF Bory and CP EL. I see dolls that look similar and cost less and debate on wether or not to get them. But then i asked my mom for her opinion and what she said was " If your going to spend that much for something that you want get the one that you really and truly want you will just have to cut back and save more" and that made absolute sense. Why get something similar when you can get what you want for a little more.

    4. I think this BJD-doll hobby is so expensive even what, so if I really like some doll, I'll buy it, priced $200 or $500. All the stuff needed to doll costs about $100 (wig, eyes, clothes, coating can..). So it's useless to try to buy the most cheapest things, 'cause do you really love your doll if it's not exactly what you want?

    5. I just got my first doll, Aijo (Kid Delf ANI boy NS) this Christmas and I'm saving for my next doll. I'm torn between a Delf Chiwoo NS for my charater Alex or a DOC Si, Hoo or Bee-A boy for my charater Hikaru. I don't know if just want the chiwoo first just because he'll be my first SD or not...yet I don't know to get the DOC First because he's my first and only doll, Aijo's other half. Gah, atleast I've got enough time to decide while I'm saving.

    6. Very interesting thread. i finally gonna finishing pay for my dream doll in one week which is Super Dollfie 16 Amelia and it is incredible to finally i could save and afford her. To be honest the same way i love Volks i love cheaper dolls that i have saw and the price of status of elitism don't count for me as long i will love the doll and i really wish to be part of my doll family.

Right now i am very interested in a Bobobie Long 70CM doll and i will like to have more info about him from someone who have him. This year along with Princess Amelia i will get some Bobobie Tinies :D, DollZone Hid the Assassin and one doll which i not gonna mention since is offtopic here on DoA.

When it comes to dolls the one i like and i can buy in the moment i will do it no matter their price, company or what anyone think about them.

    7. Price is a big issue with me. I just purchased a Migidoll Ryu and am trying to find the right body for him that's in a decent price range. (Sucks sort of because it's a tan head and I can't think of any tan bodies...) But, I have a minimum wage income and so it's hard for me to dish out 1k on a doll, or more then 600 dollars one ONE doll part (ie a body or a head or hands, etc).

    8. I am one of those who buy "cheaper" bodies. The head is affordable to me but not the body. So what I do is purchasing a floating head and find him a right body with resonable price. Well, resin match is a big issue but in this way it does save me big buckes.

    9. I currently have two BJDs. My first was a Unidoll Jace and recently a ResinSoul Mei. They are both beautiful dolls, but when you see them side-by-side, it is quite obvious who was the more expensive doll. I have not really bonded to the Mei. I think she is adorable and loved her face in all the pictures, but that gut-wrenching tug is not there that I have with the Jace. When I look at him, all I think is, "Wow, he is amazing." I cannot stop looking at him even though he has been home for quite a while.

Now it may just be the mold, and I know it is just personal preference, but I will be more careful in my doll purchases in the future. For me, I think the right decision is to buy quality, not quantity. I have 2 doll purchases planned, a Fairyland LittleFee Ante and a Lady Saiyuki Ren. The LittleFee seems to have more character and personality than most of the Yos I have seen. And Lady Saiyuki's dolls are one of a kind and simply amazing.

    10. I could understand buyin a cheaper doll (which are still expensive items to collect, so to say) if you don't have a job, are a still a student, so forth and so on. In that case, I think people should go for the "cheapest" doll with the mold they like the most. I recon there are some lovely molds out there.
However sometimes I fall in love with cheap dolls, such is the case of the D&G boys. They don't seem to be popular at all, at least not the faces, but I love them to pieces, mostly Basil. I'm tempted to buy one in the future but I'm only allowing myself to buy dolls who suit the characters I've created several years ago. And if I cannot find them, I'll give it a try at making my own.

    11. If all the dolls you love happen to be less expensive then you're lucky because you have a greater chance of being able to get all of your dream dolls. However, if you limit yourself to only cheaper dolls you like instead of the pricier ones you love I think you'd be happier saving up the money for the pricier dolls. People should buy what they want most. Unless the doll has like a crazy price and is way out of their means.

It depends on wait time and how much you're willing to pay. Like I have a more expensive head on a cheaper body because I couldn't rationalize spending 600 more on a headless naked body. ._. I still can't lol.

    12. I don't think there is anything wrong with it - heck in some circumstances I think it's encourageable. For personal experience... My first dolls were Too and Bee-A, who while not really being cheap do have the whole two-for-one thing going on (Or at least did when I ordered them) so they ended up being quite cheap. What this meant for me was, asside from getting the doll I really wanted, I also got this... Girl I had no idea what to do with. So I played around, and in the end I have Sigil, who is my main girl and whoom I absolutely ADORE. Her girlfriend, Kiana, was another cheap doll that I bought on a whim - her low price allowed me to do that, while a more expensive doll would have given me pause, but I have definitely never regretted getting her - she's beautiful and interesting, plus the fact that she wasn't so expensive means she doesn't have the stigma attached to her of having to keep her nice - she can get dirty or smudged, as befits her wild, hippy character.

I think some people can find something unique and interesting in a lot of dolls, and for people with a lot of creativity, a cheaper doll can give them the chance to expand on that and really make them work on a doll to make them something unique to them. That's one of the reasons I like free heads. They make you look at them and go 'Well, you're an odd thing. Now what can I do with you?' - Hyarhys and Kalis started this way, and they've both become such fun characters - heck, Kalis is just straight up BEAUTIFUL.

So, in conclusion ^^; For a certain type of person, this restriction is perfectly okay and sometimes really fun, but for others, it might not be the way to go - Hell, even I have a soom Beryl :D

    13. Are'nt cheap doll still a BJD?
So long you buy the doll because you love it...its ok with me~
Afterall...even a "cheap" bjd is still a few times more expensive than normal dolls...

    14. This thread facinates me. I didn't get to read all of the replies but here is my 2 cents.
I don't think any BJDs are cheap in cost if you think about how much you pay for the basic, the face up, the wig, the outfit, the shoes, the shipping, etc etc..

Ok so some aren't as high quality as others, some don't have big brand names, some have default face ups, some are customized, some are special sets, some are just naked and plain but none of these dolls are really cheap in the end are they?
I think what we call "cheap" is just a generalisation we all use (even me) to describe something which either we think costs less than we are used to seeing/hearing about or something which isn't a special face up/set.

Cheap in the monetary sense or the aesthetic sense. Cheap tends to have a negative feel to it, rather unfairly I believe.
If I love the look of a doll I don't worry if it costs half as much, in fact I celebrate it, yaay for me, how lucky!!
If I bought a doll worth over 1k I don't think I would enjoy it half as much as I do my less expensive dolls. Maybe it's something some people like to say "I own a volks" as if that means more than "I own a B&G/AOD/Bobobie". It's perhaps a clicky thing for some folk like a status symbol.

Looking at that, I wonder why we don't think a first class world tour is worth more in status than spending our hard earned 1 or 3k on a doll. Have you travelled the world? no?, but I own a bjd.. a bj what?.... Alot of the world have no idea what they are so buy what you can afford and what you love and just enjoy it. I think we should skip the labelling of things as cheap since nothing is really cheap in the end. We all sacrifice something for these babies and no sacrifice is ever cheap.

    15. Most people don't have money for the expensive models especially nowdays. even the cheaper ones are a big question is whether you should splurge on a doll

    16. Yes!
I'm saving for a DG Basil as my first doll, because I think he has a totally wonderful face and the bodies have very elegant legs (I have a leg fixation).
I was torn between him and a Luts Howl, but the Basil was the one that really did it for me. The fact that he's a 'cheaper' doll is really just a happy coincidence, though it will make the $300 outlay for him easier to justify to Mr Romwell.:)

    17. I think that it is good to start out buying a cheap doll before you buy a more expensive one. It lets you "test the waters" so to speak with the hobby. I would rather spend $80 on a doll but then find myself not interested in the hobby any more than drop over a grand and then find myself not wanting to continue buying more.

    18. I just purchased my first doll (B&G) and I had been looking at volks dolls, but they were way out of budget! I would love to have a volks but I don't ever regret getting a "cheaper" doll, to me he is perfect and doesn't seem any better or worse than a volks.

    19. Yes I do not have dolls that are over 200$ but wow I love them so much. I am looking at a 600$ doll some day. Yet the ones that are "cheap" to say are very wounderfull and love mine so much I mean I will not give them up for anything. The looks eveything I am so happy that I have them.

    20. I dont care if the doll I fall in love with is 800 bucks or 10 bucks... They will always have my love no matter if there considered "cheap" or not
