Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. Right now, all I own are two small dolls (Rosalie is 43cm whereas Crystal is 28cm- Elian who's in the mail is 45cm). I really want to have a 'biggie' doll, but I don't want to spend 500+ if I don't bond with a big doll. So, I decided to go the 'cheap' route and I plan on purchasing a Bobobie Apollo as my first biggie (and tan as well). I see nothing wrong with people getting a 'cheap' doll no matter if it's because they want to, or because they can't have the expensive one. Just because they didn't save their money up, doesn't mean they've given up. There's many dolls I wanted to save for, but ended up getting different ones instead. I'm still going to get certain ones.

    2. Well... I don't really see it as allowing yourself to buy cheaper dolls. I've bought a Homme Ducan and a LeeKeWorld Romeo and those two together almost cost $1,100 including shipping. But they were PERFECT! So, it's all about being patient and picking the right doll ahead of time. You do that... then any doll, $50 or $5000, is cheap.

    3. I dont think it matters how expensive it is. If you like a cheap doll go for it. If you like only cheap dolls, go for that.

    4. I personally think if you find a cheap doll and love it, it's fine.

Why spend so much money on something you kind of like?

    5. I guess I haven't really had a whole lot of experience. But personally I guess I believe in the theory of "They're only worth any money at all if you really, really love them." So if you're not in love with this doll, I don't think it's really something you should be getting. And if you are... Well, save save save. (Which is what I'm doing. Eheh.) Regardless of which price range it falls into; I'm not gonna judge by that. Of course, if people want to get one they're not in love with (or at least want), that's their business, but I'm never going to.

    6. Can't help noticing that the bold-print got turned off as soon as you got to the core answer! Why try to trivialize it? Why reduce it to an afterthought?

"The face sculpt you want" is no trivial matter. Most of the time, it is the very CRUX of a doll purchase. And that is why you would pay $400 to get the sculpt you want, instead of $150 for the one you don't.

(By the way: a $400 doll is just as easy to repaint & restring as a $150 doll of the same type, and just as easy to care for, and just as easy to restore to its former glory when it gets a little worn.)

    7. I am searching for my first BJD at the moment. I have been looking at the tinies and things which cost gallons less than my dream one that is like $500. But I'm going to keep saving up for one I really want. I'm terrified I'll buy a tiny and end up not liking how small it is.
But I keep finding ones that are quite cheap and making them more expensive when it comes to face-upss. Doh!

    8. Right now I'm only allowing myself to buy cheaper dolls because, well, they're all I can afford! I have a relatively large wishlist, ranging from 17cm to 70cm, $120 to $1,400.

Since I already have the doll I want most (my absolute dream doll), I'm just starting at the bottom and working my way up the list. I still love all of the dolls I'm buying, though!

    9. my dream doll is that centaur from Soom!
      so saving up for me!

    10. If you think it's fine and you can't afford expensive one at the moment, why not, if it's limited one then you have to think carefully. :)

    11. Personally I think you should search for you dream doll.
Even if she/he is expensive, the agony you have to endure saving up for them seems like bugger all when you finally get that package.
Just buying a cheap doll because you want one, is fine, but if you can@t connect with that doll whats the point?
She/he will just sit there on a shelf in the end.
It took me forever to save up for my first doll, but it will be all worth it when she arrives.
      Hope this helps someone
      =) XXXXLauren

    12. Me and my expensive taste mean that i've fallen absolutely in love with a $700 doll. Now at 18 i've never spent anywhere close to that sort of money on anything bar a laptop which was pretty much essential and is well used and abused. I would absolutely love to dive into the hobby and buy my dream doll but i just dont think i could justify spending that sort of money on anything that wasn't essential. I think that, unless i win $1000 or something, i'll never be able to spend so much and i definatly see myself buying 'cheaper' (even $50 would probably be a struggle for me :/) dolls and being satisfied. Who knows though, will be keeping my fingers crossed for that lottery win!

    13. I definitely agree with buying a less expensive doll, especially for your first. From what I can gather, the first doll is going to be special no matter what, and if you're not starving or in debt because of it, so much the better. n_n; And in any case, it's perfectly understandable to be careful about how much money you spend, as long as you still like the doll.

    14. This is my fight right now...

Do I want to get an Luts - Delf El Special or do I want to get a Dollzone - Cloud? At the surface they are priced the same... The thing is Els Dream face is perfect for the OC of mine because you can create a excellent smirky face. However, I want it 70cm. If I get just the El face, I may have to get a FeePle 70cm body type...buying another doll in the process (even more expensive) which I'm not intending to buy anymore. One is enough for me. Cloud, if I get him, that's it. No more worries with size. If Delf El, I would have to think of further customizing.

    15. I think when you fall in love with a doll you must save as much as you need to buy it, but if the doll of your dreams is the cheapest one, better for you!gon on with it!;)
the problem comes when you need need need so much a new doll (limited one)and you think"I really must have this one"and you haven,t got enough money....so...there you have to think if you wanna let it go or pick money wherever you can.

    16. I don't believe all this "save for the doll you want no matter how long it takes" stuff. I mean, sure, i continue to have aspriations of having a ... actually I can't think of a doll I want. But basically, I've seen dolls I've "loved" and seen much cheaper dolls that look just as good. Sure there is one mold that is just perfectly the character I'm trying to build but... I don't think I'll even notice when my <$200 dollar doll does the exact same job. I would never, ever, ever buy a doll that cost whatever was "over the odds". Y'know, right now fantasy doll, bobobie and so on are the cheap ones and those are the ones I want becase I am happy to take a cheaper doll to bits, sand it, paint it, change it. If I had, for instance, a fullset SD16 Ruby I would be scared to take her dress off. That would sort of defeat the object. I could just print out the show photos from the volks website and pin them on the wall. On the other hand I woulod never buy a Bobobie girl or fantasy doll buy because those dolls are plain ugly and I wouldn't like them.

    17. I don't think there's any problem with the price of the doll, as long as it's something someone likes. I tend to go for the more expensive molds simply because I think that quality is better than quantity (and cheap dolls, if you get a lot, tend to add up to one expensive doll)... but if I happened to come across a mold that was cheaper, hey, I'd be ECSTATIC and buy it in a heartbeat! If you can get a mold you love at a cheaper price, take advantage of it!

However, I don't think someone should buy a doll JUST because of the price attached... I think they should consider that sometimes it's best to spend a little more to get a better doll (and sometimes it's best to just wait for that dream doll...)

    18. In my experience, it is best to strive for that doll that you love. The one that gets you right in the gut and you can't stop looking at its pictures. If that doll happens to be on the cheaper end of the scale...OUTSTANDING! It is how you feel about it that matters.

However, buying a doll that is not the one you honestly desire just because the price tag is less has always left me feeling...less. This is a hobby of following your heart and your creativity and spending that extra time saving those extra dollars so you have something that speaks clearly and truly to you.

Honestly, my "cheapest" boy has ended up costing me as much as the expensive ones in the long run. He seems to require more to make himself perfect. -_-

Anyway, what I mean to say here is, price shouldn't be a deciding factor. Follow your heart because these are creations that exist only to make us happy.

    19. Now, would you say that that also goes the other way? Just because a doll is "cheap" doesn't mean it is "poor quality," and there are definite examples of a "cheap" doll being a great buy while an "expensive" one is sent out damaged with poor customer service for repair/replacement. (And yes the opposite can also be true.)

And I believe that, as you said, no one should buy a doll JUST because of the price attached... and there should be no SHAME in liking a cheap doll that would force someone to buy a more expensive one they loved less, just to try to fit in and not have people insult or shun them. (And yes, buying an expensive doll you don't love in an attempt to fit in would be buying a doll "just because of the price attached.")

    20. I agree. I would also add, that a lowever price doesn't have to mean cheap, just less costly. To me cheap is poorly made. And even then if a doll is well loved who cares what the price is? The point is to enjoy and take joy from your dolls.
