Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

1. Cheaper dolls are of lower quality, imo, but if the mold is something that you like there is no reason why a person should not purchase them. This is a hobby where customizing is one of the most important aspects.

2. My only fear of buying a "cheaper" doll would be the sacrifice of quality, it will always be alot to invest so I wish to protect and maintain what I've got, yes.

3. Personally, I don't think it has anything to do with the prices. If you like a doll, whether it's expensive or cheap, if you want to buy it, then go buy it, or forever regret it when it's no longer available for sale! ^^ If you buy dolls because it's cheap, you'll just be wasting money on things you don't like... >.> If the doll you want is expensive, go save some money and buy him/her! ><

I saved up for one whole year for my one and only doll (he's my first). It made me realize over the year how much I really wanted him. And now that he's here, I always look at him with affection, remembering how hard it was for me to save up that lot of money! ><;; I know that there are some people here who have a little too much money, but some of us are downright poor ^^ or halfway poor like I do. But that doesn't mean we always have to buy cheap dolls!

Moreover, if you can buy lots of cheap dolls with your money, why not save up all those to buy a really expensive one? ^^

4. Because...some people would rather have many dolls that they love, as opposed to only one? For example, if they have a group of characters in mind for a story, or a series of characters they wish to create?

It's like saying 'why have a group of friends you get along with and enjoy but aren't super-close to, when you can have one best friend?' (And like Iron Man said, 'Is it too much to ask for both?' :|)

There are a lot of different types of people in this hobby, and it is disrespectful to assume one answer will cover every single person's situation.

5. Beyond that, what about those who find more appeal, for whatever reason, in the cheaper dolls? With the money I've spent on my collection of less expensive dolls, sure, I could have bought a couple of expensive limiteds, or an elaborate Volks, or something, but they don't appeal to me. Either I don't care for the sculpt, or the price tag intimidates me into not wanting to work on them the way I like. So, in that case, why would I want to save up my money to buy one fancy doll just because it's "expensive" or "better" if it's not the one I like? That's an even bigger waste of money than buying a "cheap" doll I don't like.

(And like tigerbaby says, I want a specific group of characters, it happens to work well for me that the less costly sculpts have the right look for them.)

6. I think I see where you're going. It's one thing if like vicemage you prefer the less expensive dolls to the pricier ones. (it'd be a waste if she got 1 doll she hated instead of 3 dolls she liked) I have however seen people that really want a certain more expensive doll but seem to be incapable of saving. Instead of putting money down for the doll they always talk about, whenever they have money, they will immediately spend it. "Oh I have $150 right now, I can buy ___ less expensive doll" a doll they really don't want, but "omg I can have a doll right noooow." I can't help but look at that person and think "why are you still moaning about a Luts El when you have ammassed an army of Bobobies?"

7. It has to be noted, too, that because someone has picked a less-expensive doll by no means indicates they have 'settled' for less than the doll of their dreams. If you want a doll cast in blue resin that will not fade or colour-shift, to date Bobobie/Resinsoul is the only game in town. Fortunately, between their own lines and artists like TinyBear, there's lots of choice in size and shapes of doll available in all those fabulous colours - the lower price is just a nice bonus, imho.

8. So true! I know that personally, I do not like the sculpts of Bobobie, yet, I ended up loving Demon Garden Basil, who is in a similar price range. I also dislike , say, most B&G (Although some have been incredibly well made, Id never buy one for myself) but I ended up again with a similar doll because I just loved him. It was a benefit he was cheap. Only a benefit!

I think, however, the most important thing is to buy what you LOVE. If you love the expensive dolls, go for them, dont settle, and if you love a Bobobie or a Demon Garden, go for them , don't settle. I think the most important part is to love the sculpt!

I have them in all price ranges and I love them all! My first one was 'expensive' and I never once regretted it. It was so worth it for that ONE who stole my heart, but I have had others that were less just because I loved them!

9. I truly agree. This is what I meant, and I wasn't advising ppl not to buy cheap dolls! ^^ If you want them, then go buy them. But don't fret when you don't have enough money anymore to buy expensive ones because you've spent them all on cheaper ones. ^^ For me, I'd rather buy something I love regardless of price, and I'm not aiming to have a lot of dolls. A few would be enough... ^^ They can be expensive or cheap. As long as I love them it's enough. ^^

10. as long as you don't end up with debt, that's totally that person's freedom.
to have many cheap dolls or just one expensive doll.

11. I save my money and I save it hard, just bits here and there (change and a few dollars here and there, so it takes a while) so I can get the dolls I want, love and some may cost less than others so for me if I am saving the money on the side then I get what I want when I can.

12. I have to admit that I'm struggling internally with this issue. I have two SD dolls I adore, one stole my heart right off the bat. However the practical part in my head tells me that it's not practical to spend $500 on a doll that would be a minor hobby to me.
However, I was lucky enough to discover a MSD sized RS girl I -love- (I honestly didn't know they were a 'cheaper' brand till I found this website, I just adored her face) yet after looking around I do feel as if others will see me as settling. However I am perfectly happy with the thought of owning just her and the price she's selling for.

I think that while some people might have Dream Dolls (I do) that doesn't mean that they're settling by buying a cheaper doll that's just as much a dreamie. Or it just means they're just as passionate about the hobby but can only afford what they can afford. That said I doubt that if they really wanted a more expensive doll that they wouldn't save up.

My newbie two cents ^_^

13. I pretty much threw practicality out the window when I really got into this hobby. I save like a maniac for months on end and am patient about finding the right dolls for my characters. If it's not love, then I'm not into it.

For example, I've been wavering on my want for a Supia Roda for some time (keep changing my mind about it). She just isn't perfect for the character I have in mind...but then I happened upon Spirit Doll Jade today (whose sculpts I have been keeping an eye out for). Jade is exactly what I have been waiting for! I was never a fan of Spirit Doll's sculpts until I saw their new ladies. :D

Then I put Roda on my waitlist (for a character intended for my second Zaoll Luv), but I've finally decided...I will have two Rosy dolls instead. Hehehehe! XD

14. Dolls with more economical price tag do not always equal to "lower" quality.

Prices for Luts doll have come down significantly in the past 9 months due to currency exchange- while the quality of the dolls remain the same. Thus currently you can get MSD size Kid Delf even less than some Yo size on the market.

I think people should try to do as much research as possible and purchase only those dolls (more or less expensive) that call to them. Because as long as these are the dolls you truly adore and want, they will be worth your money and time, regardless what price you paid for them.

A doll can be less expensive, but if he/she is not the mold you like at the end it will just be money wasted - regardless how much or how little you spent on the doll.

15. I do have a BBB army due to my being a seamstress and needing doll bodies as models... but I picked dolls I actually liked. Yes, what initially drew me to BBB was their prices. I thought, "Hey! I can get several of these and they are in my business budget!" (I'm a small business owner so buying them has set me in the red which I hope to overcome this year and get myself back in the black) I don't really feel too guilty if they get jostled around from being carted from convention to convention or poked with a pin. They are working dolls. But I love their face sculpts too. They all have names and personalities.

I do have a small collection of my own personal dolls. Ones I find and fall in love with. I have a growing list of those.

16. I think one should buy the doll which you like most, and it should not matter the cost or the price. If you like a expensive one, you may save more money to buy it instead to buy a cheap one but you do not like most~
It's my own opinion~

17. I don't really pay much attention to people who have only certain kinds of dolls. It's, like, their business, you know?

As for me, I buy what I like, which may not include cheaper dolls. My best friend has a bobobie, and i have a migidoll on a luts body, and the engineering on the luts body is on a whole different level than the bobobie body... so there is a reason for what you're paying. Facesculpt is important to me, but body sculpt is pretty important too.

18. well, I want a doll, so badly.
I think people should understand that not everyone has the same economic statement. [is that the correct word?]

However.
I want to buy my first doll, and I'm all mesed uo because I've seen many stores, sizes, types, prices..
I don't know what to do! But there's something I'm sure of:

•I want a big one. [60, 70 cm tall will be fine]
•I want a cheap one.
•they have to accept PayPal.

I'm 17 years old, I don't have a work. I live in Mexico and to have a work here is not at easy for a student as in the United States. Therefore, there's so much insecurity so I can't walk alone on the streets..

I think is not the price what makes a doll beautiful, or better. Is how much you love it and how much you take care of it. ♥

19. I think there is a limit on how much I'd be willing to spend on a doll, but I don't think I'd limit how much I'm willing to spend on it.

If you like the doll, then you should look into saving for it. Instead of denying yourself something that is expensive. Let's face it, BJDs aren't cheap. It's one of those hobbies that you find ways to save.

I found a doll I love for my first doll, she's a little expensive for being my first doll but I loved her. I decided not to buy a cheap first doll and not like her. To me, that's what matters.

20. That's not a problem. If i have enought money and I love the doll, I don't to buy the "cheaper"dolls.
