Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. That may not have been the intent, but that's how that paragraph reads. It doesn't even take into account the idea of "saving and saving for that ultimate dream doll" idea that doesn't actually exist for everyone, it just says that if you're not spending enough, you're not a real hobbyist, and that's a rather elitist stance to take, honestly.

On that point, too, I don't really have a dream doll. I do have a dream set, though, and I've seen criticism of "quantity over 'quality'" as well, but is it really any different for me to get the dolls to build the family I want, instead of one really expensive one that I won't enjoy as much because it's not what I really want?

    2. It's not that I'm buying cheap dolls really, they're still quite expensive once they've got their complete face up, eyes, and wig, but they're definitely not the most expensive dolls on my list right now. I figure..I could save up for a lovely dream doll like a Tsukasa Konoe SD16 girl, or I could buy two dolls like Ryo and Rose that I'd love just as much :sweat Anything over $1000 is just a little too much for me right now.

The real fun in this hobby for me is creating a character from a mold and photographing it and exploring its personality. If I only buy the very expensive newest dolls, it's very hard for me to afford accessories and clothes and face ups.

    3. See if, like you, all you want is the 'cheaper' dolls becasue they are the ones you love then thats fantastic. I think the idea behind the quiestion was if someone was only buying the cheaper becasue they cant wait for the one they want then maybe that isnt a good thing

    4. After just turning 16 and able to apply for a job I find it hard to even think about buying a doll. But people on DOA are older (and younger then me) and most likely have more money. The only dolls I have seen up close where most likely $200+ so I don't know if I can be a good judge. But if you keep buying cheap dolls you love how will you be able to save up for your dream doll? I would put the dream doll as my main goal and get the cheaper dolls you love later, cause you know, they are cheaper and easier to save for ;^^

But in the end people can do whatever they want with their doll money ^^ Dolls are dolls after all :D

    5. I feel that even after buying a cheap doll, during the process of buying things to customize and dress it up in, you'll eventually grow to love it anyway.

Sometimes people even prefer the features of cheaper dolls, and just by chance, it was made by that company who prices their dolls cheaper.

There's also a possibility that people don't want to be conformist and buy things from bigger name brands. XD; Who knows~

Or some people view the dolls to be of the same uses anyway.
Like buying Chanel sunglasses versus some $10 sunglasses from someplace else. Both with UV protection, just Chanel ones have a Chanel symbol printed on them.

    6. Hmmm I think I wasn't very coherent in my post. :sweat

I never meant for my words to mean that "if you are not spending enough, you are not a real hobbyist."

What I was saying is that, like what maymie692 has said, is that I am personally (my opinion here, not that it applies to all) don't believe in buying for the sake of buying. That was what I read from the word limit. People have different ways of reading things, and that was my interpretation.

It's just like getting your doll family together, in a way. You will want to like the doll first, not just add any doll in so that it can make up the numbers. The doll that you want can be affordable or it can cost thousands, but so what? As long as you are buying it because you like it, well, I agree 100% with that.

Getting any bjd just because it's the cheapest doll = the easiest to save up for/ within what mommy said she is willing to pay is what I don't agree with. Believe me, I've met people like that.

It's not unlike buying an branded keyring because it's the only thing you can afford for now, instead of the bag you love. That money could have gone into your bag fund! :| I've personally done several silly things like that and boy, have I regretted it. Settling for less is horrible. * Note, less does not = cheap. less= what you like less*

Getting something you don't want just because, is something that I don't agree with.

    7. I don't mind if the doll is cheap or expensive, the main thing i concentrate on is how to getting it lol.

But considering that, for the last two years i had to buy cheaper dolls because it wasn't me paying. Whatever doll i liked back then i had to also look at the price and who was buying it for me. But now if i like a doll i have to get it-i know that sounds spoilt but im not XD. Anyways, like i said i have to get it, but i also make compromises or get some of my family members to help me out aswell.

    8. If I like really like a doll, sure it can still make me freak a bit if I see the price, and it turns out to be much. But if you really like it, and you believe it is worth it, so it is then. I didn't buy Liddell Souldoll sells less expensive dolls. I bought Liddell because I like Liddell... Just save for it some longer if it costs much, but you know it will be worth it.

    9. If I like the doll, the sculpt, the features...wig, eyes, face up, joint system etc, then price is not really important. If the doll is less expensive (cheap) {:doh GAWD how I hate that word}... then it just means I will be able to purchase that doll sooner and not have to put it into layaway and wait 6 months for it to arrive. I find noting wrong with the "less expensive/more affordable " dolls. Price does not always equal quality and customer satisfaction.

    10. I don't really care whether the doll is expensive or not. Right now I'm in a bit of a financial problem so I've put my more expensive dolls on hold. Some of the dolls I buy may seem cheap but it's still expensive for a doll

    11. If you're only allowing yourself to buy the cheaper dolls because of how much money you have to afford, then by all means go for it. One still has to be able to manage around life without going broke, but if the same amount of money you have to afford to buy a cheap doll several times, then save that money and put it together to buy the doll of your dreams. ^-^

    12. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with this dilemma. --With me it's not a matter of 'trendiness' or the like, just that there's simply no way I'm going to have $500+ to spend on ANYthing in the near future, while I might have $400 and could definitely contemplate $300 and under. Which probably means my first BJD will be a SoulKid instead of something bigger/more exotic; but I'll be perfectly happy to start there and work up. =) And I'm sure I'll still love my smaller dolls just as much when/if the day comes that I can manage something from the "dream doll" list. (Hey, I'm still having fun planning the work on my NeoGuys.)

    13. There are things about both the expensive dolls and less expensive dolls I like. I like Obitsu cuz it has the magnets in the feet and three types of bodies to choose from.
I like how many face/head sculps the more expensive companies offer. I also like to restring the body to get it just how i like it. Love De

    14. i think that if you have a passion for dolls and that is the doll you want, go for it. now, if you have a passion for dolls but don't really like the doll, wait and save, because this hobby calls for a complete and total love for your doll, or you've wasted money that could be used to buy the doll you want in x amount of time.

    15. There is no such thing as a "cheaper" doll as it's all relative to the person buying. What is expensive to some may be cheap to another. The cost is irrelevant. If the purchaser loves the doll and takes pleasure from the hobby, regardless of cost, then the definition of cheap or expensive is unimportant.

A doll of a higher value does not make it more elite to its less expensive counterpart. The true value is based on what the owner gets out of it.

    16. I think "cheap" is generally accepted as relative to the hobby/industry rather than the person. $500 is a lot of money right? But everyone knows $500 is super cheap for a car. No one is going to say "a $500 car? That's a ripoff!" If bjds range from $100-$5,000 then yes a $100 doll is a "cheaper" doll and a $5,000 doll is a "more expensive doll."

I'm a big fan of people getting the doll they want wether it be cheaper or more expensive. If that $100 is the best doll ever to you, then I'm happy for you that you got your doll. It annoys me though when people with cheaper dolls get so defensive of their dolls when no one even said anything about them.

    17. Personally, I think you should get a doll based off what you love. But just because you love it, doesn't mean you can justify buying it. I have yet to get a first doll (multitude of factors working against me, it sucks XP), so I'm still looking around for one. My favorite so far is the DOT Girl from DOD, but I can't imagine pating that much for a doll when I'm going to have to pay for college in a few years! So, wha tyou pay for your doll should be totally up to you, and should be a decision as personal to you as the choice of the actual doll.

    18. I made the mistake of buying a cheaper doll rather than waiting for another one. I loved him and his was very beautiful but I got him out of impulse. And now I see him as a "cheaper doll". Its not like it bothers me so much or that I'm worried about what other people think. He just represents a horrible lack of impluse control. I wish I would have waited for when I better understood this hobby and spent more time on research. But that is the beauty of dolls you can always change your mind.

Though I must say don't buy a doll just beacause of its price tag weither that be big or small. It bothers me a bit when I see people with dolls just of the sake of dolls.

    19. I think it's better to save up for a long time to buy a doll you really love than to buy a cheaper one because that is all you are allowing yourself to do. In the long run, what would you rather have: a doll that you've saved for because you love it, or a doll that you bought just because it was cheap and "allowed"?

    20. I'm not going to judge someone for doing it - I think you should buy the dolls you really love, I wouldn't "settle" on a cheaper one I didn't like just because I couldn't afford a grail. I think that would give me more incentive to save for the one I really like. If you bought 4 "cheap" dolls @ $200 because you couldn't afford your dream doll of $800 well that seems silly to me, why not just save and get the one you really wanted? I'm saying this in the case where you don't really want said "cheaper" dolls, but felt like you should have something in the meantime. If you like both, but at the time can only afford the less expensive one, well then by all means buy it. For myself, I don't have the space or desire for one of the larger dolls, and am sticking to tiny BJDs. I guess they are "cheaper" but that's due to size not because I feel like I am settling on something sub-par.
