Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. "cheap dolls" are not always peoples second choice! it is true there are stunning expensive dolls everywhere but I dont think it is worth it to spend around 1000 dollars for a doll, and again everyone decides what to do for themselves. For now I bought my first doll and she was what you might call cheap, but I bought it not only because of the money but because I love her sculpt. Maybe if I had more money I would buy other more expensive dolls, maybe in the future, because there are also other models I like.
For now I am very satisfied however!

    2. Cheaper doesn't necessarily have to mean the price difference between say a Dollzone and a Soom MD. It could also mean a size restriction, like only buying MSD or Yo-SD sized dolls.

There are a vast number of very beautiful SD-sized dolls that I would love to own, but it is impractical for me to invest in one both from a financial and a space stand-point. I still live at home. Even if I could save enough money for one of those big beauties I just don't have the space for a doll that size. So, my restriction is only MSD or smaller dolls until I can afford my own place. Not that I can afford to buy very many dolls, mind you, but it's the principle.

    3. Dollzone... I don't think they can be considered cheap anymore. ^_^;;; I'm not sure why the labeling persists. I mean, they cost about as much as Luts... a little more, actually, and Luts is usually not included in the list of 'cheap' dolls. Even though they are cheaper than quite a few of the other established brand names.

    4. I agree, I was browsing eluts and dollzone's sites respectivly, Dollzone isn't really cheaply priced. As for the debate question-

I don't think I could ever say a justified comment that claimed I only buy "cheaper" dolls. The ones I have bought and the ones I am eyeing really do not fall on the cheaper side of the dolly price fence :| I don't see anything wrong with doing so though, far as I know most of the cost-effective companies still provide quality dolls that arn't going to fall apart on you, so no issue really.

    5. I think people should get their 'first choice doll'. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that someone might choose a Bobobie/Resinsoul doll for their first, the sculpts are lovely, the range of colours is impressive and their default face-ups are improving all the time. A Bobobie MSD is cheaper than their nearest competitor (as far as I've been able to find out), but the price is only a small part of why someone might want to purchase one.

If your 'first choice doll' is a Bobobie or a Volks or a Soom MD, just go for it, because a doll you loved the moment you saw it is a doll you are more likely to bond with and therefore more likely to enjoy playing with, photographing and dressing up and less likely to be disappointed with it.

    6. Hello everyone,

I am new here, just purchased my first BJD. As far as price what people pay or don't pay doesn't matter to me. There are numerous dolls, at numerous prices for numerous tastes :)

As far as my purchasing habits, I only buy what I really want (love) for my enjoyment.

To elaborate further (re-read the question) The past week I have been to various doll sites, so much so that my eyes hurt LOL! As far a BLD's go I am staying in the 14cm and under size. Smaller doesn't mean cheaper though I did see some Felix Brownies that really captured my eye and I guess at under 100.00 per doll those are considered cheaper. Haven't ordered any yet but that is due to having three dolls on lay-a-way already so I went against my own rule (one doll on lay-a-way at a time) due to being afraid that the dolls would sell out before I got the money to pay in full. Being new at BJD's, it seemed that some sell out quiet fast and didn't want to miss the few that I really wanted (Bong, Soso and Tyni). Personally I wouldn't buy something unless I was really in love with it. Seeing sites that had some dolls (adorable) but not on my list. While they were cute, I don't need to own everything (couldn't afford to anyway) :)

It's all about budgeting for what a person wants. Should they save for that 1,000.00 doll over getting another doll for less? Personal choice will always win out, some will save save for the 1,000.00 doll others will decide on buying something for less. As long as a person is happy with their purchase, that's what counts.

    7. I think its fine ..and at the end of the day they can always sell off a bunch of their cheaper dolls to finance a more exxy one .

    8. Well the way you worded it... I suppose it's fine. I think if people were only looking for cheap dolls then they wouldn't be in the hobby very long because they're would just buy any old doll they could find for a low price and likely get bored. But if you bond with a cheap doll and an expensive one but you're strict on yourself so you don't get the expensive one... I think that's perfectly fine. No matter how much I loved a doll I wouldn't pay over $1000 although the price is usually one of the last things I look at. I think it's good to set yourself limits otherwise you could severely damage your bank account by buying every doll you fell in love with.

    9. No, dollzone is def not considered cheap or anything like that. Although I have to be honest and say that the cheaper doll companies doesnt have the faces that I like, but they are great to buy bodies from for my floating heads!

    10. I agree, it should be a matter of personal choice.
For myself, i'd say that I'd rather save and buy one expensive doll i *love*, then two cheaper dolls I only *like*.
If I loved a cheaper doll, i'd chose her instead of expensive, but just because i *loved* her.

When I was buying my first doll, I was trying to restrict myself to look through cheaper dolls only. But noting caught my eye at that time... untill I came across a more expensive doll which I loved at first sight. After discussing that with family and saving moey, I bought that one.
And for my 2nd doll, I chose a cheaper one, even chose basic version over limited. Not because it was cheaper, just because I liked it more.

So it all depends on individual buying dolls, nothing wrong with that ^^

    11. Well, cheap is a relative term, depends on the depth of one's pockets, so to speak. I started out buying cheap (relatively) but don't regret it. I'm dressing four gals now and chose each one for her unique look, even though three of the four are not "legal" in this forum. I wouldn't trust myself to try customizing yet but am enjoying giving each one her own special 'look' - cheap doesn't even enter into it.

    12. I'm lucky, the only commercial doll I really love is like one of the cheapest BJDs I've ever seen. XD;; (The other dolls I love are produced by private artists, so I don't count them.) But if she were really expensive, I don't think I'd go for her, even though she's gorgeous. I think I'd find a cheaper doll that I liked well enough, because I'm sure once I got her and started playing with her, it wouldn't matter to me anymore. I'd discover all the things that were unique about her, and I'm sure I'd love her for those things. And anyway, I would be too nervous to play with a doll that was too expensive.

    13. I think it is not bad to start with a cheap doll if you don't have possibility to buy more expencive one. But this is only in case you like the cheap doll also.

    14. I have read somewhere that whenever you buy "alternatives" (it doesn't need to be cheap) to your dream doll just to satisfy your desire to possess a doll, you are just delaying (or worse, pushing yourself away from) having it.

If we give emphasis on the "amount" spent on buying dolls, buying "other" dolls might get to the point where you'll just sell them just to buy your dream doll afterwards... it will just appear that you spent more than what you should've spent in the first place.

Most people would like to save up for years (not including the waiting time to have the doll manufactured and/or shipped), and greatly loved their dolls for it. For them, it's an achievement that is priceless, regardless of the company, mold or price tag :).

For those are just starting out but plans to buy a limited doll as their first doll, then it is up for them to decide if they are capable for such purchase. Although some doll owners tend to purchase more than one doll, plenty of them know their limits in terms of purchasing power.

    15. I count myself lucky as the first doll I feel in love with was a Bobobie Charisma. I had seen lots of BJD but never thought I would ever be able to own one due to the high price. I have nothing to compare my doll to but she makes me more than happy and that's what counts at the end of the day.

    16. I've just started so I bought A bobobie she is moderate but I love her sculpt perfect for me.
My dream doll was a Tender Shall it was the first doll I ever wanted sure she is like $400 but personally I could have bought her in time with patience maybe 2 years ago
but to be honest she is just to big for my taste and all I really liked was the face-up and her outfit and not the like the doll itself

I don't think there is a right or wrong to buy a cheap doll but I think the real issue with cheap doll against the one you want is that you don't see the options

-find the doll that fit them their lifestyle
      -Have patience save up
-there are plenty of doll companies check them out they have sales/deal during the year
-some places are doing deposits and layaway
-buying the doll you want in parts

Also I know people who buy four-five cheap doll when they should realize that like three of those doll could actually amount to the doll of their dreams

    17. In my opinion , since even when I'm buying clothes I prefer to go home with full hands instead of one expensive thing, I m searching for all the kind of discounts second hand and so, while I am trying to saving for a more expensive doll which in my case is a FCS...so I am pleasing myself with other treat like heads or mini girls such as mini riz...not very expensive compared to Volks fcs....
even if I really like her limited too, but since for me it is too complicated to attend to a lottery and too much expensive in my opinion, since as I said before I like to spend but I like to get the more I can with the money I ve saved, I feel better when I try to not go for the expensive, I kinda feel guilty...even if I like people who can spend!!! spend for me too!!! and share all your expensive girls and boys photos!!!

    18. Well, my dream doll is an Oasisdoll, or a Leekeworld doll, both of which cost upwards of $500.

We're pretty restricted money-wise lately so I have to settle for the second-best, still pretty but not my favorite, Bobobie 60cm. $170 is really all we can do right now.

It isn't that I only ALLOW myself to only buy cheap dolls, it's just that I have no way to save money with my current situation and Bobobies are affordable, good quality, and very pretty.

    19. Cheaper dolls are the only kind I can afford. The reason I bought my Delilah doll is because she was the first bjd I ever saw that cost less than $200.

    20. My dolls are Bobobie dolls, which I suppose can be counted on the "cheaper" side. Still, I bought them because I really love Bobobie sculpts, not merely because they are cheap.

Still, that's not to say buy an expensive doll is wrong either. If you love the doll, then it doesn't matter! :)
