Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. As a general rule, I'd prefer to save up for what I really want. Of course, sometimes that may happen to be something "cheaper"...

    2. Well... I just love bjd as overall, it's rare to find a sculpt I don't like (and when this happens, it's more common to happen with expensive dolls than cheaper to be honest )
And to add to this, I usually only allow myself to admire for real, dolls that are cheaper, if they pass the 300 mark, I just stop looking. It's like everything in life for me D:
I'm poor, I have the money but I can't afford to empty my bank account on a present for myself. I need to think on a future, consider there are important things I need (new glasses for example, pains me to think of their price D: ) plus need to consider I need to help my parents if they need money.
With that said, if I do want to have a doll (and for years, I have wanted one, badly) I need to think only on the cheaper ones.

Now don't take me wrong, I wouldn't buy the cheapest one just because I want a doll and it's cheap. I also need to bound with the sculpt, find it beautiful, make sure it's dreamy and that I want that one doll.
I've found Long and I know I want him. He's big, his body reminds me of my favorite manga artist art style and his face is just gorgeous, so I want him.
Maybe until I get him I will get side tracked, I do have a weakness for BJDs overall. If money wasn't an issue I would have dolls from nearly all companies. Cheaper and more expensive ones all the same.

    3. I don't think it's worth it. If you don't love it, don't buy it. =3 That's what my mom always tells me. It's a waste of money to buy something you don't love.

    4. I think saving up for your dream doll is alot more rewarding, then getting one you convince yourself you want!

    5. I bought an expensive doll I loved, and the cheapest doll I could find to learn to mod dolls properly...
I now want to sell my expensive one, and buy another cheapo because I love my cheapo so much!

    6. I prefer to buy the ones I like - although my wallet is not made of rubber, I still find it best to just save for the mold I am really in love with. At this point I do have an inexpensive doll sitting on my shelf, and I don't think she's any better or worse than her companions - especially after I had the courage to redo her face-up and found out which wig types suit her best. All that's left now is just the clothes - and she will be a real gem (:

    7. Honestly, price wasn't something I considered for my first doll purchase. I took my time and looked at all the sites, until I saw one that I really really liked. Personally, I'm not a fan of a lot of the Volks I see on their site, same with a few of the other "expensive" companies. I guess It's lucky for me that I like lower priced dolls.

    8. I never like to settle for 2nd best. It's either I buy it or I don't. It's rather unfortunate for me since I'm really cautious about spending money. But I agree with some of the points mentioned above - buying a slightly cheaper thing that doesn't satisfy me fully is akin to wasting money. I'm about to drop $600 (it includes clothes too) on my first doll which is crazy when lolita dresses half that price puts me off. But after seeing that girl, i feel that i couldn't love another!

    9. I go back and forth. If I buy an expensive doll, I think I could have had 5 other dolls for the price of this one!

    10. I often think that way. Why pay more when you'll still enjoy it? It's better for your wallet and for future bills. You can put the money you don't spend into a savings account and use the interest for another doll.

    11. I'm similar on how I like the look of other companies. The eyes look a little funny for some of the more expensive brands. I'm enjoying how the Korean brands look. Luts and Fairyland are what interest me the most right now and they have good prices for what you're getting.

    12. I'm just the opposite, if I had 5 inexpensive dolls, I'd be thinking "man I could have bought that awesome limited fullset for the price of these."

With the amount of money I've lost reselling cheap impulse buy dolls that were only "ok" to me, I could have bought each of my dolls a dollheart outfit. :doh

    13. I think that if you really love the doll and really want it, price is doesn't matter. If you haven't enough money, you can save up money and by it a little bit later. And... I love Resinsoul's bodies ^_^ They helps me to get dolls with expensive heads, but don't pay 300+ $ for body ^^

    14. Exactly! I would like to buy first the expensive doll that I love, then I'd buy the "cheap" doll that I love... and then maybe I'd buy some doll that I like (I'm not sure if I should buy a doll that I simply "like".

    15. I think if a person doesn't give the drive for the higher costing doll do you really think they want it more over the doll that's cheaper???... It's all depends on the person I want a doll who's only $78 and I love her so much, but I also want a doll who's $810. Obviously i should get the cheaper one first, but I'm pushing myself for the higher priced one I want her so bad and have little time since she's limited.

    16. I commented ages ago in this thread but I forget what I said, and now that I've actually bought a doll, I might say something different. XD;

I think it is totally okay to buy cheaper dolls you like rather than expensive ones you like more. People do it all the time with other items and it works out fine. You CAN make it work.. you just have to make sure you spend money in the areas worth spending, (make sure the doll you get does not have any glaringly unacceptable and unfixable flaws. ex: awful joints) and be creative/flexible with anything it's possible to improve by yourself. Plus personally I already feel nervous with a $360 doll. (Not the cheapest, but by far not the most expensive, and really it's just under my critical limit.) I think getting a more expensive doll would suck all the fun out of it for me. It might be gorgeous, but if I'm scared to touch it and feel guilty when I look at it, what good is that? This is also the reason I don't feel drawn to limited dolls. (I mean, it's not like I wouldn't consider getting one, but non-limitedness is definitely a perk.)

Buuuut if you're thinking of getting a cheaper doll in place of a more expensive doll, I think it's important to really consider the cheaper doll by itself, without factoring in the expensive doll. Because maybe it's better to just not buy a doll at all this time if you don't really want the cheaper one all that much.

You can buy the expensive doll if you REALLY want, but I don't think people consider enough the possibility of not having something, (especially if it can be admired from afar) and that's how so many people end up buying too much or too expensive.

    17. I kept to bobobie for a while, (spending no more than $200 total per doll, and less normally) but I finally broke down to spend $350 on my dream doll whom is a pukipuki.

I'm also taking sculpting classes to learn to sculpt my own dolls, as well.

    18. Hmmm. I do have a personal cap on how much I spend per doll, and I try to keep it in the $400 - $600 range (but that's not my first priority). However, I focus more on the sculpts I love, rather than on the price tag. For example, I am waiting on an Iplehouse Asa (who is over $600), but the next doll I want is an Angelsdoll Ruby (under $300). Both are 60cm dolls and both are knockouts! XD I have some hybrids that use a more expensive head than body and I have some hybrids that use an expensive head and expensive body. You have to go with what works for you and what you love.

    19. well at first i thought of that too i thought about buying only the cheaper dolls and it never crossed my mind buying the expensive ones except for joke
but then i thought in exchange of buying 5 dolls each one cost 100$ that I dont like so much why dont i save up and get the the one who is price is 500$ that i realy love
when you get something you dont realy like just because of the price your love will turn into total hate and the fun and happiness for having a bjd doll will fly out the window

    20. I don't think it's a problem if you really love the doll. You like what you like and if your dream doll happens to be 'cheaper' (and I mean that lightly, $85 is a lot of money out of context) then lucky you! But I do think that if you want a doll that's more expensive, you shouldn't get the cheaper doll as consolation. Wait and in the end you'll be happier you got the one you really wanted.
