Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. I believe that if you like a doll from boboie, equally to a one from Volks or Soom, than you should buy it! If you love the doll it doesn't matter if it's a big brand name, unless you want better quality. So I think that buying a cheaper doll is not a problem.

    2. Over the years I keep going back and forth between not caring about cheap dolls and hating/being bitter towards them. I still struggle with my impulse to buy things if they're a "deal" and this includes BJDs. I have bought many very low priced BJDs over the years and always end up hating them. The bodies which are the most important thing for me have so far ended up being...not good. Then I always end up selling it on but with the low priced dolls, they usually have a lot of dealers and are very common so if anyone actually does buy it second hand from you it will be at a substantial loss. :(

I had pretty much broken myself of the habit of "ooh deal!" and hadn't bought one in years, but for my birthday in June my brother (trying to be nice) bought me a very cheap doll. He didn't know the difference and just thought "oh this is one of those dolls you like right?" Which would have been sweet if he hadn't forced me to pay him back...O_O So now I'm going through being stuck with a doll I hate again but this time I was forced to buy it. -_-

If I had to limit myself to only buying cheaper dolls, I'd just buy minis and tinies only. Dolls that are good quality and lower priced but not "cheap" for their size and not from a company that's considered "cheap." I've learned my lesson many times over. If you're not satisfied with a doll, it doesn't matter if it's only $100 it's still a waste of money. I'd much rather have a high quality outfit/faceup/head than a whole doll that's sub-par.

    3. Well first of all, I'm very new to the hobby. In fact this is my first post on this site! But anyway, I've actually realized some things about this very topic while browsing the replies.

When I first started researching I didn't want to look at specific dolls. I read more about the "mechanics" of dolls because I was pretty convinced I wouldn't actually be able to afford one for a long time. When I did break down and go looking, I quickly realized my previous assumptions about prices were way off--in fact most dolls were MUCH more expensive than I had originally believed. I was pretty bummed.

I looked some more and eventually stumbled across Bobobie. I was amazed by the prices, and I decided my first doll would be Yao. And since then I've been content with my "cheaper" choice. But while I was browsing this topic I saw someone mention that they pick dolls based on the look, without checking prices. And then I realized if I were given a blank check and told to pick a doll, I would still pick Yao as my first. She's so beautiful, and when I saw her I forgot all about my "I want a boy doll and he's going to look exactly like XYZ!" ideas.

I think that's really what it comes down to. And I'm glad to see so many people agree. What matters is how much the doll strikes you, whether or not you're able to bond with it, and how happy you ultimately are.

    4. People should buy the dolls they like and love reguardless of the price. Whether it's a BBB or a Soom monthly...just go for the doll whose sculpt you love (:

Of course if you are in a tight spot with money and price is an issue I'm not saying don't buy anyhting >.< get a cheaper doll but get one you like!

Basically, don't buy a doll just to have one. Don't get a BBB because it's cheap, don't get a Soom because it's "cool", get them because you love them!

    5. It depends on one's budget. If you are on a tight budget then there is nothing wrong about buying "cheap" dolls. BUT if you are buying a cheap doll just because it is cheap not because you really love the sculpt then that is a different story. You should buy one because you really love the sculpt itself. there are so many cheap but super pretty dolls out there. I can afford an Iplehouse EID but still I have some dream dolls that are "cheap" (yes I am currently thinking of getting an asleep eidolon milkshake so cuuteee!!!) :fangirl:

    6. I personally like bobobie he quality is decent but i love the face moldsAnd the types of dolls they have im am looking to get a dim doll bjd but i dont know if i should i think getting cheeper dollsIs ok why cant you its whag you like ive been aslo looking at a couple of soom dolls but those i probobly wont get becouse there alot of money i think you should get what you like and thats it

    7. Buy a doll because you love it. Who cares if it's "cheap" or not if all you can afford is less expensive than that's what you buy. The love you put into it and the hobby is the most important. I think people who judge anything about people's dolls weather it be how they dress them, mod them, what company they buy from or that they think said person is just fallowing a trend are so immature and need to go back to high school. This is a hoby not a job it's ment to be enjoyed any way you want :)

    8. Technically I got both of my boy's for "cheap" on the second hand market, an SD Angel Studio Cain and a DOC Zen both for $300. But after they got here I worked hard on their faceup, got them nice clothes and just generally made sure they didn't look "cheap". I also have a want for a RS Song, I think his face would make a wonderful fairy boy :D, but I really hate RS and BBB bodies. So I probably will never get him even though he's even less expensive than my other boys, or I would hybrid him onto a body I like better.

On the other hand the two dolls I did get are not the ones I originally wanted. I had plans for a DOT Ducan for my first but I found Frost on the MP and couldn't resist! Now I have two dolls I love instead of one and I still plan on getting Ducan later. ^_^

    9. I don´t care to buy a cheap doll or a expensive one, I just search for a mold, if I like it and is cheap perfect, if it´s expensive... to save some money and buy it. I´m not going to buy a doll just because is cheap, for me is to throw away money, but each one can do what he wish.

    10. I look at the less-expensive side of the doll market because I know that if I ever decided to save up $600 at once, I would literally go crazy. Some people can't keep their sanity in the process of saving for a very expensive doll, and I am one of those people.

That being said, I don't buy inexpensive because it's inexpensive. If I don't really like the sculpt, I don't buy it, I don't think of buying it, and I don't put it on my wish list. I'm usually comfortable saving up to around $400. Anything higher, and I'll constantly do calculations about how much of something else I could get with that kind of money. With something around $400, I can keep those thoughts at bay.

There is also a price ceiling where a doll simply isn't buyable to me. Anything above $700, and they're nice to look at, but that's all. I've said this about LE's before. They're beautiful dolls - don't get me wrong - but the price is just too much for me. Also, I haven't seen any that I felt I had to have.

I can completely understand someone buying an inexpensive doll at the start of the hobby - but even then, buy it because you like it. If no inexpensive doll looks good, then you will have to start the long-term saving game. Don't buy a doll because you want a doll.

It's been rare, but sometimes I get the impression that people think that people buy inexpensive dolls because they want a doll, and not because they genuinely like said doll. Most people who buy inexpensive dolls do so because they like that doll just as much as they would an expensive one. In this hobby, price doesn't equal quality, either. So, while some do buy inexpensive because they just really want a doll, most people buy for the exact same reason someone else would buy an expensive doll.

I'm more concerned about someone buying an expensive doll that they didn't really want because they were under the impression that less expensive dolls weren't 'legitimate' dolls - if that makes sense.

    11. People will have a reason for getting the less expensive doll as opposed to the more expensive one. If either doll will make a person happy, I think it's fine if the person goes with the cheaper doll... The circumstances just might not be right for a more expensive doll, I guess. But I think that a person should just go with whatever makes him/her happy, regardless of the price. If a person knows that a certain doll is something that they truly want, then I say go for it, even if it means waiting a while to save the money for it. So I guess it's 'okay' for people to restrict themselves to the less expensive doll, as long as they're happy with it.

    12. My first doll is going to be an illusion spirit minos. Some people would complain that he's "cheap" but I don't care. I could have saved for a volks with as long as I waited to get him however he was limited and right. His resin is lighter in weight and I understand that he may not hold up as well or be as well sculpted in the body as other dolls but he is the right one. So if you fall in love with a less expensive doll then good for you. You have more money to spoil them with nice things!

    13. I think when you let the price tag determine whether you get the doll instead of how attracted you are to it, that's a mistake. I got my first girl because she was literally the cheapest SD I kind of liked. Now I'm selling her and saving up for a doll twice her price that I'm actually drawn to. You can't really bond with a doll you aren't strongly attracted to, no matter how affordable it is--that was the mistake I made. Better to save twice as long for twice as much than to mis-spend what you'd pay for a cheaper doll you're not as crazy about.

Nothing wrong with going for the more affordable of two dolls you're equally attracted to, though.

    14. I'm an unemployed student, so I don't have much choice but to buy cheaper dolls. BUT! I think even if I had a lot of cash, I would still really like some cheaper dolls. They tend to be less popular, too. I'm also the type of person that likes to get unpopular things. For example, I have the choice to buy a BBB tiny or a pukifee, and I decided on BBB (the cheaper one), NOT because it's cheaper, but because so many people have pukifees, and I want something different.( I'm also absolutely in love with the doll!)
My point being, I don't think the price should make a difference, unless you're on a budget. I think it's just a matter of which bjd suits you best.

    15. I come back to this thread sometimes, and even though I did reply a while ago (most likely) I keep having the urge to do so again.

I just don't see how it's such a phenomenon. People who buy inexpensive dolls do so for the reason why people buy expensive dolls. Most people who have an inexpensive doll aren't doing it to settle because they somehow secretly wanted something pricier. They're doing it because this is the doll they want, and it just happens to be $150.

    16. I really don't care much if some one buys a "cheaper" doll if they really love it but if it was me and I had to choose betwine a cheaper doll I'm fond of and a expencive doll that I love I would always go the extra mile to have perfection.
That being said some cheaper dolls somewhat irk me, not because they're cheaper but because they are usully much lower quality. The same goes for dressing your dolls, if you're going to spend that much money for something it might as well be nice.

    17. It's the doll, not the pricetag, right?
I have a few on my to-buy list right now. A few are Illusion Spirit, and one is a LUTS model. I happen to think the IS dolls are gorgeous, and fit the look I was seeking out. They're in the under $300 range, and I happen to think some of the $250 dolls from many brands and gorgeous to look at, as well.

The tag matters to a doll as much as brand name purses matter. Some people are labelwhores, they just buy things because of the namebrand. Others buy them for the look or quality. So long as the doll is what you want, and loved well, what's the issue?

    18. okay, I am confused. Do you mean cheap as in lesser expensive or "cheap" as in will fall apart K-mart brand tennis shoe cheap? because my 5stardoll emma was not the second type of "cheap"

    19. @Dragonfly's Treasure I believe the original poster meant cheap as in Less expensive. Not as cheaply made or less quality.

Saying that I agree with what others said before (not all too sure if I've posted here before. >.<) People buy less expensive dolls because they love the doll not because of the price tag. And if there are people out there who "settle" for a cheaper doll just because it's cheaper...well, I wouldn't to be honest. Whether or not a doll is $150 or $450 to me they're both still a lot of money. I'd stalk the MP for the doll I really wanted before settling on a less expensive doll just to have another doll. Sorry if that sounds snobby...it's not meant to. ^.^'

Though, there are also some who think if you're modding something heavily only buy less expensive dolls. I disagree with this completely. It's your doll you bought him/her if you're going to mod it good for you! after all that's what BJDs are for right? and as long as you're happy with the out come does it really matter what anyone else thinks?

    20. I got into this hobby because of the freedom to express my personal taste by endless choices and custimization. I would love to be able to purchase any doll regardless of price, but well, reality hits! I have a 'cheaper' doll (RS/BBB Song) and a more expensive doll (DoC Kirill) and love them both!

:aheartbeaJust get what you REALLY want and be happy! That's the whole point of this hobby!
