Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

    1. If it's what you want and in your budget, why does price matter? theThe onlY dolls I can think Of getting are cheap

    2. If cheaper dolls are all you can afford, I don't see a problem. Even if you have more money to spend, buying cheaper dolls--which I'm finding can be quite beautiful--you can get more bang for your buck. Like you could spend $700 on one doll, or you could spend the same amount of money and get several dolls and plenty of clothes to go with them.

When I first started buying I just wanted the beautiful face of my dreams. When I found him, the doll happened to be 71cm. Sorry, but I'm used to discussing dolls in inches. I didn't realize how huge he was going to be. I didn't worry about the price because he had the face I loved. When I was looking for his boyfriend, I had to go with a doll at least as tall as he was. Taller dolls just tend to be more expensive ones. Now I feel a little like I'm stuck. Like every doll has to be in that height range. lol Maybe I'll get slightly smaller dolls in the future but right now my smallest is 65cm and I'm just loving that size. But that also means I can't buy as many outfits as I wish they could have. It's just too expensive.

    3. I think I would be divorced if I went for the higher priced dolls....just saying. Not everyone has the means to justify it. As it is usually it goes on the CC. I only work PT and have another PT at home job because we move around so often.

Plus I can't buy too many dolls, usually one a year or so.

    4. Well, actually, I wanted the limited day-dreaming Lance recently, but he is sold out already. I found somebody else who can sell their doll to me. Luckily, I found that person, but the price is almost $750. Thatโ€™s crazy. I love this doll, but I donโ€™t want spend such a large amount of money on it.
When I bought a doll, I need to make sure I can pay, and I can hold the price. If the price is too high, I will give up unless how much I wanted this doll.
But on the other hand, I think buying a cheap doll just because is cheap and you want to own a doll, and whatever who is it. Thatโ€™s wrong, and I donโ€™t like these people like that.

    5. Just because there a cheaper doll doesn't mean they're a bad make. I can only afford cheaper end dolls but I still love them. But just getting a cheaper one for the sake of having one is a bad idea. You may as well save up for one you really love and get it

    6. I am not against paying a bit more for a doll I really like over one that is just okay. but if I fell in love with a doll that was 900+ dollars I probably wouldn't buy it. I always like to think about what else I can do with the money I'm spending to make sure it's truly what I want. I actually just did this recently with a limited doll. It would have cost me about 900 dollars to get the doll and all I could think about is by spending that much I could buy two other dolls that I liked almost as much. So I held off and didn't get it. but I also wouldn't buy a doll just because it's cheap since I feel I would be wasting money that if I just wait and save a little more I could buy something I really like.

    7. Something similar happened to me recently. I saw one of my dream dolls (he's limited of course) on the market, I was so happy! but then, the price tag made me feel like crying >_< he was around $1500+(he's originally $600) and I immediately thought "that's like buying 3 SDs!!" and kept on thinking about all the things I could buy with that money considering that if I were to buy the doll I'd still need to spend more money on a new face up/wig/eyes*_**_*

*sighs* I'm not a millionaire and I have other priorities (College, family) so... I won't buy him.

In the end, if you can afford it and don't have to sacrifice important things like food, house expenses, family needs etc then there's nothing wrong with spending that much money if you really want it.

I also don't see any problem with buying cheap dolls if you really want it. My most favorite doll is the cheapest one and I love him to death, not even that limited doll I wanted to buy is as worthy as my precious "cheap" doll.

    8. I don't specifically limit myself to cheaper dolls... It's just kind of coincidental that the dolls I really like tend to be cheaper because the ones I look for are AT THE LARGEST MSD-sized. I'm not a fan of the HUGE HUGE full-size dolls because I don't have anywhere to put them, so my ideal size is small ones. The smaller the better for me, because then I've got the opportunity to do more with them. 8D

Right now I'm looking for a doll I can get that will be small enough to take on a huge trip I'm going on in June to Colorado where there will be a ton of nice photo opportunities because the area we're visiting is gorgeous... I need to take a plane there, so I really want someone small enough that I can pack safely without worrying a whole bunch about. In my opinion, the bigger a doll is, the bigger a chance is that something will damage them, so... 8<

    9. Sometimes, cheaper dolls have equally same quality as the more costly ones. Well for me, since I am still studying and I don't have extra financial support from anyone, I go for dolls that I can afford. Anyway, the matter of price depends on each individual~

    10. I just bought an expensive full set limited edition from one company and some "cheap" resinsoul dolls because I really like them! They'll all get the same quality clothes eyes and wigs and be loved equally. In my collection I go more after what catches my eye than how perfectly everyone matches. I actually think they look more like a realistic group of friends that way as well. Humans come in a huge variety of sizes shapes and colors. Which reminds me... I need some fat or chubby minis, lol

    11. I agree with this. But it's really hard for me since most of my dream dolls are very expensive. I find it cheaper if you buy them in parts instead of the full set. It will take months to hunt down but cheaper in the long run.

    12. I would not buy a cheaper doll again, if I was not really sure it is what I truly want. I made the mistake of buying a cheaper doll because at the time, I could not affort to buy the ones I really wanted, which was a Unoa and a Narae. I had the cheaper one, Yewon by Souldoll, for several months, and was never really happy with it. So eventually I sold her. After really saving my money for some time, I finally got what I wanted all along. Now I have a Unoa and a Narae that I am really happy with. Therefore, I will now save for what I really want, rather than buying something cheaper in the meantime.

    13. I do understand how they feel, those people who likes cheaper doll.
But I don't think that's the best way to deal with the doll. Personally, I think
the cost of doll isn't really matter. I think that what it really matter is what I really think about
the mold of a doll that are my style.

Few years before that I got Ara (volks anais type),
my wish list was always had been Anais type.
But since Anais was really expensive, I got bunch of cheaper dolls to fill up the space for Anais.
However, I never felt the way I wanted (didn't full fill myself with other dolls),
and I ended up selling the dolls and wasting lots of money for re-selling them and getting Anais with all the money that I gained at the end by selling all the doll that I had been collecting it.

So I don't see buying a "cheaper" one as the solution.

    14. It's true price doesn't necessarily equal quality when it comes to bjds. I have dolls from many different companies, from "higher end" to "lower end", and all have their pros & cons. For my collection I can't see myself being able to justify spending any more than around $600 on any one doll. The ones I currently own (Yo - SD sizes) each cost me between $100-$400. But as long as I genuinely love a sculpt, the price, be it low or high, doesn't matter to me. If I have to save up to purchase a doll I've been wanting then I do, although I admit that if there are less expensive dolls on my wishlist I tend to purchase those before any I'd have to really save for. That's not me only "allowing myself to buy cheaper dolls", or "attempting to fill the void" of an expensive doll I really want with a bunch of cheaper dolls I only sort of like but can readily afford; I only buy dolls I genuinely love, so if I buy a less expensive doll that's the reason, not the price. ^_^

    15. If you love them what's the big deal? I honestly don't see a problem here. If you're just settling for a cheaper doll instead of a more expensive one you really want, though, saving up is always an option. As long as you're happy, you should have whatever dolls you want--inexpensive or not.

    16. I find this is something I end up doing simply because the concept of layaway is AWFUL with my horrible patients, as well as the fact that I don't pull in much money. However, I find that I am HAPPIER with the cheaper dolls I ended up choosing because I have started putting my own personal touch to them. For example, I really wanted an Asleep Eidolon mermaid, but at over $1000, I was like WOW that is too much, so I ended up choosing a different mermaid: an IMPLDoll Colourful Life Dorisy. I honestly like her MORE because she has a gorgeous skin tone, a very unique look, and I even bought Soom Cass Abyss Rhapsody fin feet for her, which I am really excited to get painted and put on her. Honestly, I probably spent close to $800 to buy her and getting all the stuff I needed to customize her, but I had so much fun doing it and it was great to really be creative with her.

    17. I'm part of the group that limits themselves to only cheaper dolls. But there's a few things to mention. When I say 'cheap' I mean from 100 to like 400. I can't justify paying 1,000$ for one doll. And I am on the broke side, but I really love these dolls! so what I do, is set my price range, even if I have to save a little for it, and find one I really love. There's plenty of very good dolls out there for 200 (which is the price of the one I'm buying now) But I would cautoni to other people who are looking at dolls just for your price. If you buy one just because it's cheap, you may not like it as much. I've spent two years deciding which doll would be my first, and it just so happens to be beautiful and fit my price range! :)

    18. OMG we're in the same boat~

Sometimes we just need to have self-control.., seeing our targeted doll at maybe 1000$ doesn't mean we should go for it. =/ We can always set our target on lower range dolls. They have their own uniqueness too~

    19. I can really only speak to my own experience...

I got into this hobby as an adult so I had more money to spend on dolls that are more expensive to acquire than I would have had ten years ago. I don't have many dolls, but I really love the ones I do have. It's really hard to wrap my head around how much I want to spend on dolls. I still struggle with it but I don't let it stop me from getting the dolls I really, really want. (whether I have to save up or sell art or whatever.)

It's simply a personal preference thing because you can't put a price on what you love- dollar amounts just don't equate: meaning that it doesn't matter if your dolls is "cheap" or "expensive", you should get what you love.

I always feel like the value of this hobby (outside of straight up collectors/ing) is the creativity that each owner brings to the table, that is priceless.

    20. I will admit that when I went looking to buy my first BJD, I did look at the cheaper dolls, but I knew I wanted a 60cm+ sized one. Thus, when I found the Angel Street Orion, I was in love with him. Mintoncardinc.com was awesome, because I could make payments on him, because with my minimum wage job, there was just no way I could shell out his cost at that very moment.
Now, when I went looking for him a girlfriend, I allowed myself to fancy the idea of a little more expensive doll. However, I fell in love with the 5Star Jessica, and she was just perfect and petite for my Baelz (Orion doll).
Now onto the Illusion Spirit Minos. I saw him on Alicescollections.com and thought he was beautiful, and at $295, even I about had a heart attack because that's nearly my monthly rent. . .but income taxes are a wonderful thing, and I allowed myself to splurge a little. Don't regret it at all.
I honestly think that buying their accessories is what kills me, more than the dolls themselves. Buying an outfit for Baelz that suited his character cost me $60. That kind of freaked me out a little, and that wasn't counting his wig or eyes that I also ordered.
So, in the end, I think its what you can allow yourself and what you can afford. If you LOVE that certain doll, save up for it. As long as its not a limited edition, it should still be there after a few months of saving. And if you get it through a website that allows layaways like MoC does, then all the better. If you can only afford the cheaper dolls, then no one should care of judge you. It's a hobby, plain and simple that we all enjoy. ;)
