Only allowing yourself to buy "cheaper" dolls?

Sep 30, 2007

1. There's nothing wrong with it at all. There is nothing wrong with compromise, and cheaper is a term relative to people's perceptions on worth. Honestly, nothing about this hobby is cheap to begin with, so instead of cheaper dolls I'd say moderately priced dolls. Ahahaha.

Even when people say save up for what you really want if you need something more low priced, I think that's wonderful. People have limits on what they're willing to spend on something as silly as a doll (yes, I think this hobby is silly but I love my dolls :'P to you).

2. I think it makes perfect sense to limit yourself to dolls that are cheaper, even if you LOVE a more expensive doll. This hobby isn't just about the dolls, its about the enjoyment you get from creating stories for them, or sewing for them, or taking pictures, etc. It could be worth it to buy a cheaper sculpt you like a lot, then to spend the numerous months or even years it might take you to save up for a super expensive doll that you love. Like it has been said before, I'm a college student. I just can't buy a doll that's more than $500 base price, no matter how much I love it. Maybe you're a mother, and you love the hobby but you can't afford to buy a more expensive doll because you have kids. I don't think it's fair to say people who don't buy a doll they love because of price don't have the "drive" or "motivation" to save for a doll they really love. Personally, my life is too crazy to hold onto too much money at once; something always comes up and then it's gone, or priorities change. If you are able to save up for the expensive doll, then of course, go for your dream, but if it makes you happier to be satisfied with cheaper dolls that you still like, as long as you love them, I think it's fine.

3. I don't think it makes a lot of sense to stick to cheaper dolls when they are not the ones you really want. If you don't buy the dolls you want because they cost more than your limit and you buy some cheaper dolls instead just because they are cheaper than you still spend too much in my eyes. I'd rather own one expensive doll that really makes me happy instead of owning 3 cheaper dolls that don't give me that much.

But if the cheaper sculpts are exactly what you want and love and that is the reason to buy them instead of their price then you are pretty lucky :)

4. I spent a lot to buy my friend a doll because she's wanted one for ages and she's really into the hobby. However, I quickly get bored with my things. I'm not spoiled by any means, but once I have something (I ordered a bunch of prints to make a collage, for example), I'm not as excited about it. I'm more willing to spend on her than myself because I know she'll always love her doll whereas my interest may wax or wane.
To start off, I want to get a cheap doll, but I don't know, Migis are just soooo perfect... *_*
(and small dolls are surprisingly expensive)

5. If you look in my signature, you'll see that I own a number of "cheap" dolls. Not only are they "cheap" dolls, they're ResinSoul dolls. I've noticed that in certain circles, this occasionally attracts negative attention, though not here on DoA thankfully! While it's true that I could've bought one fairly expensive doll for the price of my four RS mini dolls, the truth is, these are the dolls I really wanted. The reason I bought RS dolls is because I love how they look. I didn't really take price into account, although their being less expensive is definitely a bonus!! I do have some more costly dolls on my wish list that I'm saving for, though.

Personally, I think people should do what they want with their own money. If the doll a person loves is a "cheap" doll, they should get it regardless of other people's opinions. I think people should get the doll that makes them happy.

6. I only allowed myself to buy cheaper dolls initially. What ended up happening though is that I found I lost interest in them very quickly and eventually ended up buying the more expensive dolls that I really wanted later. I am now pruning my collection because of this.

If the cheaper doll is really what you want then go for it. However, if what you really want is a more expensive doll then see if you can't wait and save up for it. It may end up saving you the cost of 2 dolls instead.

7. I'd rather save up for 1 doll that I really love, than settle for several ones that are just..ok, you know?

8. At first, my family disagreed with me getting a doll that is over a $800.
But then I figured it out that I the money isn't the matter.
But since there are so make fake brand doll from China is flowing around marketplaces,
it makes me concern whether should I get it or not sometimes.

9. i think that as long as you look at the maker of the doll and know what you like, and how to spot a 'fake' then spending what you want on a doll should be fine. i like all the categories and prices of the dollfies. i spend up to 700$ (if i have enough saved) or 40$ for one. i like them and they are still dollfies no matter how much so spend on them. ^^ so be happy! (or not that's up to you>< )

10. As for me, I would buy the expensive doll that I love rather than the cheaper that I like. First, if you can't get the doll that you love, you will always think of it. It is a sad thing. Further more, If you can't love the dolls as much as other dolls, that is unfair to dolls. And at the same time, you were wasting the money.

11. For me it's not a matter of price; I won't buy a doll because it's expensive or because it's cheap. My most favorite MSD is a Doll Leaves W who cost me about $150 as opposed to my, lets say, MNF Shushu that cost near $400. Now don't get me wrong, I do love my Shushu, I'm just trying to explain that for me price isn't really a factor that decides which doll I'll get. I will get a pricier doll if I really love it but I will also not shun a cheaper one because it wouldn't fit with my more... expensive collection.

12. The one thing people should not do is buy a cheap doll only because of the price, there are many dolls out there and all look quite different no one should settle with a sculpt they don't love just because it is cheap. I've seen people do that and then complain about the doll.
It's an expensive hobby however and the doll isn't the only cost, a lot of people buy cheaper dolls they love and can afford to spoil them with expensive faceups, wigs, eyes, props, shoes, clothes etc. whilst some one who bought a doll that was a few thousand dollars might be working longer hours to pay off the dolls cost and have less time and money to spend on the doll.

13. It doesn't bother me whether people can only afford cheap dolls or only go for expensive ones.

I only worry about what I'm buying, not what anyone else is doing, simply because, it really doesn't matter. :)

14. I own 3 dolls, 2 from 5stardolls and 1 from dollleaves. I suppose they are considered relatively "cheap" dolls. However, that don't affect how much I love these dolls because of their sculpt/posability etc. As many have mentioned, the clothes/wig/accessories that will come after you get the doll will eventually snowball to a lot more, maybe even more than the doll himself.

If in the case where you like a "cheaper" doll, but you LOVE a more expensive doll and you can't make up your mind, I would say you pretty much rather just save up for the more expensive one because eventually you will still get him because you just love him so much.

At the end of the day, it's not so much about only collecting "cheap" or "expensive" dolls, it is all about collecting dolls that you personally like and you can justify whatever amount you spend is worth it.

15. My most expensive doll costed 400€ I dont want to spend more than 600€ to a doll, but if I find doll that is over that and is the absolute doll of my dreams, Í might have an exeption. I also wuld like to buy a Dollfie Dream doll someday, but they are little bit too expensive for me.

16. I have to say I'm lucky that I like dolls that aren't that expensive :D My most expensive doll cost a little over 300€, and the most expensive on my wanted list cost the same. Phew...

If I found a doll I really like and it cost more, I'd still have it if I could. It would just mean a lot of saving money... :,D

17. As someone who has a mix of "cheap" (because let's face it, more than $100 for a doll isn't really cheap) and expensive dolls I've come to the point that if I really love a doll, even if it's fairly expensive, I'll save up for it and get it when I have the money. I'm actually saving up right now for a doll that I never thought I would get but that I've really wanted for a while, but I was hesitant before because of how much she cost. Now I'm just doing what I can to save up because I've realized that the value of a doll isn't really in how much you spend on it, but how much enjoyment you get out of it. :)

18. my thoughts as well. if it's cheap ( even though to me, nothing in the bjd world fits the description of cheap >.> ) but you understand the point X3. if it's cheap and i love it, then praise the Lord i am saving money, if it's expensive and i love it...then i am doomed and i still must get XD!! i am not a person that usually goes after brands and stuff, i buy that which gives me happiness and pleasure, so whether is a doll from bobobie or from volks it doesn't make a difference to me. but i do agree that if you are going to buy ten $100 dolls that at the end will make u unhappy, why not save up and get the ridiculously expensive $1000 dollar doll of your dreams, just to set an example.

19. I wouldn't have stayed in the BJD hobby as long as I have if I'd had to be limited to just buying cheaper dolls. I have a Resinsoul, and he's ok but the feeling I get looking at him is nothing compared to the excitement I still feel looking at my Delfs or my Volks SD13. I've bought many "cheaper" dolls because I'm someone who likes a bargain and when I see a doll that is cute for cheap, I'm like an impulse buyer. Yet because of the low price I make myself ignore flaws that I wouldn't accept in a more expensive doll. Maybe the wrist joints are wonky or the hands aren't beautifully sculpted, or the body is not detailed, I think the savings will let me overlook the doll's flaws yet when I get the doll it really doesn't. The only cheap doll I haven't sold on is my RS and that's because my brother got him for me. If I'd bought him myself he would have been sold on and replaced with a kid delf or a Volks MSD or DoC, etc...I have to really stop and make myself think "Do I really like this doll, or do I like the money I'm saving?" Is this a good doll or just "good for the price?" I am a huge perfectionist in almost every aspect of my life and dolls are no exception. There are many people who are not the same as me and wouldn't even find an imperfect wrist ball joint,etc...as a flaw. There are people who want the less perfectly sculpted dolls because it gives them character, there are people who would use the opportunity to fix those flaws themselves, there is no one set way to buy dolls. The most important thing in such an expensive and creative hobby is to know yourself! What do YOU want out of it? What will you be satisfied with? What will leave you unsatisfied and wanting more? The sooner you figure that out, the happier you'll be and the less time, money, and energy you'll waste on random goosechases that wont make you happy.

20. I think if you like the doll then it doesn't matter how much it costs. It is what the doll means to you that counts, not the maker or how much $ you spent on it.
