ONLY buying Male & ONLY buying Female Dolls

Jun 9, 2010

    1. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
Right now I'm only buying female dolls simply because I prefer female dolls. I just think they're more fun to dress and play with. There are so many different kinds of outfits and wigs and shoes for female dolls that I just find male dolls kind of boring.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
Yep, I fully intend to purchase a male SD sized doll in the future to be a partner to my future big girl. :)

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Not really, I find male dolls just as lovely as female dolls, I just think that females are more fun to own.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Sure! I've seen lots of gorgeous male-to-female/female-to-male dolls.

    2. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
So far I have only ever purchased girl dolls. (Besides when I was a child, I had a few ken dolls) I don't know why, I just like them better. I like pretty dolls.
If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
I think that if I REALLY liked a boy doll I would get him regardless of gender.
Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Like I said, I think girl dolls are prettier, and I like pretty dolls. I prefer the female form in general, so I guess I lean towards girl dolls.
Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
      I don't think I'd ever do this...

    3. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
Right now I only have one doll and it's a female. Although I plan on getting a male in the future and maybe another female. Mainly because alot of the characters I have are female. I also personally think female characters are nicer because you have more options with hair and clothes. I love fluffy dresses and I don't really like the idea of cross-dressing a boy doll if there's a girl doll thats willing to wear dresses. I'm not saying cross-dressing a doll is bad or anything I just don't have any male characters that would ever be caught wearing a dress. In addition to that I also needed a model to draw and I generally like drawing females better then males.
If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
I plan on getting a male one day.
Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Not really...It probably has to due to the fact as a child I had like 50 Barbies but only two Kens, so female characters are easier for me to create.
Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Only if the company offers to sell it on a different gendered body.

    4. I know this doesn't generally follow the outlines of this thread, but I have a question. Were/are any of you bothered by only buying one gender?
Right now I really want to buy a guy doll, but if I buy him for a character I have in mind I'd have to buy another guy doll to go with it (the character's are both male shoulder angels/devils). I'm afraid that I will end up with a bunch of guys and no girls. Being a girl (and overweight) I can't really relate to most of the female molds, so I always tend to become attached to male molds.
From the sounds of things, a lot of people exclusively collect male dolls, but I don't like the idea of only having one gender (think "sausage fest").

    5. All my dolls are male and all the dolls I have on my wish list are male. There is a sort of exception, but the lone female on the wish list is a hermaphrodite and will actually be modded to have boy bits as well. So, technically, there will be no 100% female dolls in my house and I have no plans to add any.

    6. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
Originally, I was only going to buy female dollies. Then, I fell in love with the idea of a pair of fraternal boy & girl twins, and, well.. I guess I'll be getting a male doll, afterall. (Or two :XD:)

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
      N/A

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Mmm, yes, actually. I like girl dolls better, as I've only ever had girl dolls throughout my life. Mainly, I think their body-shapes are much more aesthetically pleasing.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Yes, I have plans to do just that! :XD: I'm getting a Soony-SP head, and sticking it on a boy body.

(BTW, sex and gender aren't really interchangeable words..)

    7. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
I'm buying both.... But I'm only buying boys to go as partners to the girls I buy.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
      yes
Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
yes. girls are more appealing to me, because I like frilly dresses, and doing hair, etc.
Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
No, I don't think I'd ever do that, but I think it's cool when other people do.

    8. I only have one doll,
but I feel as though I can share my feelings anyway.

      Do you only [have/wishtohave]
Whenever I go browsing through the doll companies and others dolls, it's always the boys that catch my eyes. With the girls, it seems that they're all wrong for me. I think some of it is just not liking how they're all pretty. Being average, I prefer stories/pictures/movies/etc. with average girls, because it seems real to me. I love girls, though. I love their clothes and accessories, but I just can't find a mold that suits me. They're all lovely, but they just don't catch me like the boys do. I just want to the boys all home. I've never been bothered by pretty boys - I adore them actually.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
Definitely. I really want a girl that I can play dress-up with, and I love girls' curves and breasts. They're beautiful. I guess that's why I'm fine with the boys, though, cause the companies tend to make them curvy. I'd just have to find a mold that stood out to me. It'd be hard. And it would confuse me, because I wouldn't know where she'd belong in my world of dolls. With no girls, the boys are bound to be gay, but with a girl? Hm.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
I guess you could say that. I just thought to myself; if I like the boys so much, why not make a boy mold into a girl? No, says I. Then she'd be too pretty, and somehow that bothers me. I'm fine with gorgeous guys, but not girls. I want my girls to have a sort of natural pretty that's hard for a doll to achieve sometimes. So yes, I'm all for boys.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)? ^^^

    9. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
As of now, I only have one doll, so yeah. However, nearly all of the ones I've even considered have been the same gender, so if I did own multiple dolls they would likely be all or nearly all male.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
Yes, but it takes a very special girl to get me to even consider it.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Definitely. I tend to view male dolls and characters as having more depth and personality (though I know it isn't true, especially not for real people!) and tend to bond more easily with males than females. However, this appeal is almost entirely mental and emotional, as I find the female bodies more physically attractive. In fact, I refuse to consider a male body that is particularly masculine.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Yes. Most likely it would be a girl's head on a boy's body, though I'd be willing to put a slightly masculine head on a girl as well. Androgyny appeals to me quite a bit.

    10. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
I only collect female dolls. I don't want to offend anybody but I don't like that most of the boy dolls look very feminin.
If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
No, I don't think so. If there is a really special awesome boy, that I would really like, I would buy him. But if I look at male dolls now, I guess I won't buy them!
Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
I like female bodies and shapes more
Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
      No, I don't think so~

    11. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?

I don't ONLY buy one sex of doll, because my second doll is actually a girl(head only LOL), but I do ONLY look at male doll when I'm looking through the doll company website

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
I guess the answer would be yes :p

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?

      yes :p

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?

no, but I bought a head of opposite sex to practice my faceup :p...

    12. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
I plan to buy only females for a while. See below.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
Yes, but the only male sculpts I'm strongly interested in are the 70 cm, particularly those done by Iplehouse. I don't care for feminized males at all. If any of my dolly girls has a boyfriend, he needs to be big, buff, and manly.

That said, the tinies and some of the very youthful 42 cm boys are cute. If they're young enough, the androgyny doesn't bug me. I've yet to find a 60 cm boy I like. And I'm not a fan of long, unruly hair on guys, so that's also a problem.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Definitely. The female form is smooth and elegant. I have a hard time seeing the male form as particularly beautiful. *dodges flying bricks*

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Absolutely. I've considered this for many heads--in fact, I think the majority of male BJD heads look better as female!

    13. i do only buy girls because they are more appealing to me also i like to make them look good. if i want to dress a guy i can dress myself, with the girl its a little harder :)

    14. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
I intend to yes/ Idk why just males are more appealing to me. I like these dolls as like idk not as DOLLS so having a male doll takes away that "toy doll" feeling for me. also I love male fashion and guy's hair styles so.. ya

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
Possibly yeah but it wouldn't be for a very long while, I just wanna have my two guys for a while.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
yes. refer to first answer. having a male doll feels less toy doll ish for me.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
      maybe.

    15. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
So far, my doll at home is a girl and I think my next ones will also be. I just feel more into sewing for girls at the moment.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
      Never say never...

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Definitely. For the moment there are so many female sculpts that appeal to me, I'll go for them first.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
I've just ordered a doll-family A boy, BUT with a girl body. As I said, I feel more comfy with female dolls... This character will be some sort of a tomboy, but still a girl... (girl power!!!) ;-)

    16. I'm only in it for the dresses, I like frilly frilly girly girly swishy swishy dresses of all time periods.

Never say never, but I really don't want to dress a boy doll in a dress.

I would put a boy head on a girl body and make a girl, no problem, many of these sculpts go for female or male.

    17. This was a fun thread to read! I didn't realize it, but it seems most people really do prefer one or the other gender. I thought I was a both types person, but apparently I'm not!

Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
Yeah, every doll I think I've ever seriously looked at was a boy doll. I have no idea why - I like frills and prettiness and boobs, but... I guess I just dress myself up when I want to look at something pretty, so I want a gorgeous boy to dress up and pose too.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
Nope. I love looking at other people's gorgeous dolls and admiring their pics in the galleries, but I don't really want one. Plus I figure if I want a girl for a moment, I can just dress my guy in a pretty dress and pretend he's a flat chested girl. Poor boys. xD

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Yeah. There's a few sculpts that I was neutral on, until I saw them on a boy body and done up with a less girly faceup. Then I wanted them badlly. The biggest example of this was Dia, and Vega.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?

Yeah. I haven't seen many sculpts that weren't androgynous, or that couldn't be with the right faceup!

    18. At the moment I find myself with only male dolls in my house/on my wishlist, however I do plan on getting a girl. I just want a doll I can dress up in super frilly over the top dresses and ahhh~ ♥ I'm against feminizing my boys, even my shota boy is most certainly male, so a girl is a must at some point for me.

    19. Were/are any of you bothered by only buying one gender? No it doesn't really bother me. I don't collect just to collect though. I collect dolls to represent characters. I don't like writing female characters. I don't bond with them or understand them. With the exception of one tiny I only have male dolls. She is as girly as they come though. I always say she is all the things I wasn't as a child. That is sort of what her character represents, and probably the only reason I can write her. She is my little princess who wears the frilly dresses and is doted on by her father and all the men around her. Not that she is that frail and incapable of caring for herself, but she does take advantage of it. Almost all of my other characters are male and all of the ones important enough for me to want to own as dolls are definitely male. As a result I own mostly SD male dolls. I don't even really like to look at pictures of female dolls. They just don't appeal to me with a very few exceptions. I guess it shouldn't be that surprising though. Growing up all of my friends were boys and I didn't play with dolls. I am the only woman in a house full of guys (hubby and two sons). My hubby and both of my boys collect dolls too though. Hubby only collects male dolls as well and my youngest son has a boy doll. My oldest son prefers girl dolls.

    20. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?

I used to. I grew up with barbies and she-ra and the like. NO BOYS. or at least no hot boys. :< Ken always freaked me out. Sure I had my brother's GI Joes(the 80's tiny ones) or he-man, but they were overly beefy and that also disturbed me. I loved the aesthetic of the BJD boys with their lithe ambigious figures or the more built ones with wide shoulders and muscles like runners or gymnasts instead of line backers(not that I dislike that type of figure- but like I said, it was an aesthetic i could easily get from my old toys). Eventually I got a girl, but it became a revolving door of girls. I finally settled that i like the mini girls better for some reason, and I love my ridiculously poofy peakswood girl. but there's still a lot more boys here than girls!

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?

the asian ball jointed doll aesthetic is for boys to have softer features. In fact, they often have features more like a masculine woman- think runway models of the 1980's- so swapping boy and girl heads seems totally normal to me. Sure you might look at a doll and go "That's a manly woman" or "that's a femme guy" but real people have differences like that and the same aesthetic doesn't appeal to everyone.
