ONLY buying Male & ONLY buying Female Dolls

Jun 9, 2010

    1. At one point in time, I owned five dolls. All were boys, and all but one (a tiny) got sold. The dolls I buy are for my characters, and they are predominantly male (actually, that's really a lie, it's usually about 60% boys and 40% girls, so they're closer to 1:1 but there are always just a bit more boys than girls, generally among the children).

The reason I predominantly buy guy dolls, even though I have almost as many girl and guy characters is that the VAST majority of female dolls just do not fit my female characters at all. Pretty much all of my girls are strong, independent, opinionated and full of character. Nearly all girl dolls I see are [in my opinion, obviously] dull, frail-looking, vapid and look completely soulless - a complete opposite of what I find attractive in women. There is one female doll that I for sure am bringing home when the funds allowed - Iplehouse Eva. There's just... something about her that makes her look alive and intelligent, and she's absolutely a PERFECT match for my lead female. I've seen a few more around that I like, but unfortunately they don't really match the characters - size-wise or sculpt-wise.

As far as having more male than female characters (and therefore planned dolls)... I was always fascinated more with men than women, ever since I really can remember. All of my stuffed animals were boys, my preferred pronoun when none is specified is "he", my Anakin doll was the prize and joy of my doll group for years (I set him up with a harem of my 7 barbies, lucky guy  ) when I was kid. Dress-wise I find both are just as interesting to dress, and body-wise I find both equally appealing to look at and draw so that's not really the cause... I'm not really sure. Every time I look at a doll company I generally look for boys first, and then girls, and will probably find more boys I like than girls, but I think that, like I said earlier, it's got more to do with the general expected and upheld aesthetic towards female dolls in this hobby. I can't really say where it's the sex that makes them more appealing, even though I do have a leaning towards boys.

And I definitely don't have any issues with cross-gender hybriding - I'll do it both ways, though generally yeah, I find that it's more likely I'd want a male head on a female body than the other way around. Again, the preference for stronger-looking women.

As far as being bothered by only owning one gender... If the funds allow it, I do intend to make sure I have both males and females because I have characters of both genders, but it doesn't really bother me to only own one gender.

    2. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you? No, for now i just have 1 female doll, but in the future, i like to buy only male doll :aheartbea

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
      yes, i do

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
i think so, but i like both female and male gender:)

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?

Maybe, I really don't know for sure...

    3. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you? Right now, I only have one doll so it's not like I can really claim that I do or don't buy only dolls of one sex. That said, I can easily see myself as being one of those owners with a male only collection - if it wasn't for one little thing...

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
I am planing on having at least one female doll in my collection; based on a character I created years before I considered getting my first doll.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Not really; I'm finding out that when it comes to dolls I'm a face/head girl; the expressions and face ups are what really sell me and make me say 'I want'.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
My current (only) doll is like this, although I did buy him second hand; that doesn't change the fact that he has a Bili head (which I was told was a female model head) on a boy body. And if I ever get up the courage to buy heads and bodies separately, it's likely to happen - depending on which body I feel the head looks best on.

    4. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
I was planning to only have girl dolls, but have recently changed my mind and decided to add an SD boy to the family. :) Having a girl doll just appealed more to me than having a boy (i.e. I can sew lots of cute dresses!!) But I guess that they just grew on me. Suits are awesome too.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
      N/A

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Yes. I do tend to lean more towards the girls.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Totally. A lot of head molds look good as males and females. :)

    5. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
I only have boys so far, but that's not a matter of preference so much as the fact that the first female character I'd like in doll form is black, and there's a lot less choice of sculpts if you don't want to dye the doll.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
N/A - I'll certainly be buying female dolls at some point.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Not exactly, but I find that a lot of female dolls have very exaggerated childish features with huge eyes, and a tiny nose and mouth which doesn't really appeal to me, whereas male dolls often have more balanced features. I do love the female dolls from more realistic companies like Iplehouse, though.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Sure. There are plenty of heads I've seen that I'd love to use for that purpose. Not because I feel the head looks girly or boy-ish, but because most heads are pretty androgynous and I pick heads based on my existing characters who are pretty diverse in their facial structures and the women are not in line with the typical feature proportions of female dolls that I described above.

    6. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you? Generally, I only buy female dolls. Why? I just like them better, and think they are more fun to make clothes for. I've had boys in the past, and just recently got 2. But they all disappoint me so far, it's sad. The style of them is just not what I want in a boy.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll? yes, if they made one I really really liked!

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you? Not necessarily, but as far as clothing design is concerned, yes.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)? Probably not, but in very special circumstances I might, you never know.

    7. Like a lot of others, most of my characters are male, and it's just harder to find a female sculpt I like. But I do own a girl I absolutely adore. ^_^

    8. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you? For the most part I only buy female dolls. Because most of the dolls I plan on bringing home are character dolls, and hence 90% of my characters are female
If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll? Of course. While most of my dolls will be girls once I get my character dolls home I will be buying on sculpt, so it can go either way. All though right now, I am in the process of bringing a non-character boy home.
Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?Not really, I find if I like the face of a doll I will be more likely to buy them.
Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)? Some time in the future maybe... but at the moment i have no plan to gender swap heads. 'Cause most of the sculpts I like are all ready girls.

    9. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
At this point yes. In my main story line only one main character is female (of four main characters). I think it's easier to get all the boys first because at least they can share clothes.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
Yeah, eventually I'll need my main character female and a few other girls that will just kind of be around.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Yeah. I prefer male fashion so I'd rather have male dolls. I feel like if I got any girls they'd end up dressing like boys most of the time.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Sure why not. A lot of dolls look like they could be either gender so I think half the time it just depends on the face-up.

    10. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
At one point, I did buy only Boy dolls. Not anymore, since I have issues with clothing now. Girls have more variety with clothing while boy dolls seem to be limited in selection.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
      I eventually did.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
At one point it did, as I haven`t seen Boy dolls with actual distinguishable parts to define them as Boys.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
I do this quite a lot, and I have no problems with it. A general example of why is because Volks makes YSD`s with the same mold in two genders, Luts also makes Kid Delfs in two genders sometimes so I see no problem with it.

    11. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?

I don't find the female bodys atractive, which isn't me being small minded just I find the male bodys more atractive and yes i will sound terrible for the next but i find most female bjd bodys look like barbie and find this very unapealing..

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
      Only in tiny form.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Yes, Male dolls are more my cup of tea.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?

Maybe I did consider this the Idea apeals to me!

    12. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?

Yes, I only buy female dolls. I think it's partly because i come from the world of Barbies and Blythes and a big part of the hobby is dressing my dolls - I don't think it's as much fun with male dolls. Other than that, i never found a male sculpt that I had to have.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?

Maybe a tiny....But some of them seem genderless to me anyway. But it has to be the perfect boy-sculpt.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?

      Yes, definitely.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?

Yes sure - I don't see a problem with that, there are many unisex molds...Lati Yellows are genderless, Kid Delfs are available in both sexes....It's really a matter of the face-up. And a lot of male sculpts look pretty girly anyway (don't want to offend anyone!!)

    13. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?

Yes, at the moment all my dolls are female and the dolls I am saving for are female. I have always preferred playing with female dolls over male dolls, and I play with my dolls.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?

One day, I hope to acquire a Souldoll Chiron centaur. I am not opposed to male dolls, I just tend towards the female.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?

I think it might. I don't actually like the look of most of the male dolls or bodies. I am drawn to the female dolls more than the male. The one male doll I looked at more than just briefly I was turned off from when I noticed you could see his ribs on his sculpt. I find that icky.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?

Probably not, because I don't like to buy dolls in pieces. I don't like making hybrids, though I don't care if others do it. It's just not for me.

    14. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
Um, well, I'm only very interested in girl dollies. There are a lot of males that I go "oh, he's pretty" but nobody I think "I WANT TO SPEND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS ON THIS THING!" I think I just find girls cuter and more likeable ;;; that goes for dolls, kids, people my age, anime characters, and probably a lot of other things xD
Plus, girls are more fun to dress up for me! A lot of why I like dolls is the sewing clothes for them aspect, and to be perfectly honest I'm TERRIBLE with men's clothes :sweat

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
If I found a boy I REALLY like, maybe, but I just can't see myself getting attached to one, and he would probably end up a prop for a girl if I did :sweat

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
Hmmm, maybe. I love cute little girls, I won't deny that, so I guess so, but it's not so much about the gender as it is if I can bond with them, so maybe it isn't? :? but I bond with girls better so...

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Probably not, unless I found a male head that fit the character to a T

    15. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?

I purchase female dolls almost exclusively. That's because I have designed my collection to represent a sort of visual journal of my own life experiences and the things I love. In a way, they all tell my story in an urban fairytale way, so it helps to have them all be the same sex as me.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?

I have. It suprised me, but when I saw the MNM Johnny Depp in the marketplace here as the Mad Hatter, I instantly had an epiphany that he would be perfect to act as the central hub of my collection to unify all the very different characters. So he became the central figure around which the various stories of my girls revolved. It's worked out perfectly!

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?

Not necessarily. While I primarily collect females to tell my story, they are depicted as being all ages with different levels of maturity, and most are from different companies as well. I simply select sculpts that best suit a specific character.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?

Certainly. In fact I'm doing that now. I currently have a Littlefee El Elf in layaway that is a boy sculpt but will become a girl once she's home. I just love the face sculpt! Many people do this...I see a lot of it in the BBB/RS mini discussion group I frequent also and it makes for some very awesome and beautiful dolls. It's all in the faceup with some sculpts.

    16. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?

So far, I've only one bjd (a girl), but everybody else on my Greed Barometer is female. I am more interested in the stories of women and girls, in different expressions of womanhood, in girls' coming of age.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?

I don't know. I honestly don't think so. I have seen some really amazing male dolls here, but I'd rather look at one than own one.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?

Well, yes, for the reasons above.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?

Yes. I find rather more expression/character in many of the male heads. I find the vast majority of female heads to be passive and pretty. I'm not crazy about the neoteny aspect, either (in either gender, unless the doll is meant to be a very small child - see Iplehouse's Erzulie, who is brilliant). Since many of the male heads are also very pretty, I think some of them would make handsome women.

    17. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
Yes, I only buy female dolls. I'm not exactly sure why. I guess it's because I prefer to dress my dolls in cute, pink, fluffy outfits. I don't feel like doing that with boy dolls.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?

I have considered it in the past, however, I find it would not go with the ideas I have for my dolls. Maybe one day if I get new ideas. But not today.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
I guess so. I prefer females as I see them as "cute" and "sweet". I'm not saying boys can't be cute or sweet. I've seen plenty of adorable boy dolls that make my heart melt! But I still have no desire to own them.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Oh yes. I find a lot of doll heads are very versatile. If I felt that a particular head would make for a cute girl I would get it even if it was intended for a male.

    18. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you?
Yes, only males. Coz I guess I played female dolls enough when I was a child :)

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll?
Why not, if I see the doll that is incredible appealing for me, I'll buy it

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you?
      Nope

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)?
Yes. I often see the dolls that have such faces that you can easily make a mistake in detecting gender. So if a firm says 'It's a girl', and I see the boy I see no reason why not to change the situation :)

    19. Do you only buy one sex of doll? Why do/don't you? I buy only resin bjd boy dolls. All my girl dolls are vinyl and not bjds.

If you do, would you consider ever buying the opposite gender of doll? No, never. However, my husband is getting uneasy with my resin boys, if I bring home another pretty boy, there will be trouble. This has become an issue, I am under pressure to get a girl for him. I should make it clear that he will be responsible for her upkeep and wardrobe.

Does the sex of a doll make them more appealing to you? Yes, I only have resin abjd boys because I like their aesthetics. I am bi-shounan person since I was 9. I love beautiful boys and I make NO secret of this. The last thing I want is a 60-70cm giant Tonner/Barbie cast in resin. I however like the Dollfie Dream girls because of the aesthetics. Dollfie Dreams are uniquely Japanese, lovers of anime will appreciate them.

Would you ever buy a head of the opposite sex to use on the doll (maybe because it looks like the opposite gender)? No. I buy only full set dolls.

    20. It just happens I think. I want mostly male dolls, but I have a few female dolls I like too. The thing is, most girls like guys more and most guys like girls more. It just happens, and it often is a part of buying BJDs too. But would I ever switch heads around? No. If the doll is a girl, then it's a girl to me. If it's a boy, then it's a boy. If the boy head is so girly, SO girly, that even I think it's a girl, then I'm not getting it JUST to switch its gender.

However, if I just think it's pretty, well...then all bets are off aren't they?
