Opinions about Obitsus - Pros and Cons?

Sep 3, 2006

    1. Okay, I know most Obitsu dolls arent technically BJDs. But they were definitly made in the spirit of BJDs. I'm rather new to the doll community in general. I used to be active on the Obitsu-exclusive forum JunkySpot. So Obitsu is obviously the company I'm most familiar with. What I want to know is "how well known/popular is Obitsu in the general ABJD community?

I'd like to make clothes for 1/3 size dolls, but the only 1/3 I have as a model is my Obitsu Shiori. So I'd like to know if this is going to be marketable at all? How many people even HAVE 1/3 Obitsu's that I can make clothes for? Or should I focus on getting a more 'mainstream' brand doll like a Volks or Luts and make clothes to sell for that size doll instead?

Either way, I still plan to make Obitsu clothes. I love how poseable and durable they are! And their body shape is much more... um... mature? as compared to most SDs I've seen.

For those completely unfamiliar with Obitsu, let me give you an example of just how wonderfully poseable they really are!

    2. Well, I just got my 60cm body yesterday and I'm sure I'll get more in the future. I like them! I'd love to see more clothes that fit ;)

    3. I have a Dollfie Dream. I'm not sure but I believe that DoA groups the Obitsu with the DD as a grandfathered ABJD. Good luck with your clothes. I'll be interested to see them.

    4. I've owned the three-part Obitsu60 and DD 1 and 2.

Out of all of them, the DD2 is my favorite as it is a happy balance between the DD1's beauty and the Obitsu60's poseability.

If you're looking for better poseability and don't care so much about how the body looks, the the simplified Obitsu60 is the way to go.

If you are concerned with the appearance of the body (want more detail and a sexier look) and don't mind sacrificing a little bit of posability, go with the DD2.

    5. Hmm... Are the Obitsus simmilar in proportion to DDs? I mean... If I made an outfit designed to hug an Obitsu's curves, I know it would look awful on a SD... but would it fit the DD?

    6. I am in LOVE!! I met Xen's obitsu on a recent get together.. and as she and miss kikki kat will tell you, I could NOT take my eyes off her..

Skintone, poseability, looks, the whole lot.. Obitsu just moved WAAAYY up my wish list.. I hope to have one within a month.. and there will definitely be more :>

PFFFFFTTTTTT to all those who say its not a real bjd.....they can kiss my resinkids big round booty! These dolls are gorgeous, customisable and affordable... there should be more of them!

      Seek peace

    7. You can check the Obitsu measurements against the slopers that are in the sewing section. If you get time and care to try taking measurements forthe obitsu, I'l post the slopers for you. The DD1 has sway back that causes trouble with pants. I don't know if the obitsu or DD2 have this issue. The DD1 is curvey like the Mature bust Lishe and leggy for miles!

    8. The only caveat I have is that George's legs are miles long.
Some SD13 trousers are a bit too short for him. Not a problem for dresses but definitely for trousers.

Otherwise he's a fairly standard Boy build, if a bit on the thin side. I can't speak to the gals though.

Love my George to death. He's my avatar.

    9. Personally, I really dont like the look of the 60cm obitsu at all. The nobby joints really bother me. I have seen a Dollfie Dream in person and they are more pleasing to my eye. Although I hear Obitsu60 is slightly more poseble.
I know lots of people here have Obitsu60's, so the market would be good.
Especially if you will offer different bust sizes, because many people swap out the default torso for one of the many different option torsos.
      Hope I helped! ^__^

    10. I love my Obitsu, Tristan. Yes...he's all leg, but I sew, so it's not a big deal. Otherwise my main gripe is that his internal skeleton breaks occasionally.

My boyfriend has a DDII (she's in my sig) and she doesn't pose quite as well as Tristan does, so I prefer the Obitsu myself. If you make Obitsu clothes it would be awsome! Especially "normal" clothes. Tris isn't much into dressing up.

(Oh! and I've done a swap with a girl with a DD...the clothes fit just fine. They have shorter legs though, so the skirt (which Tris hated wearing) that was above his knee was about an inch below hers...)

    11. I have several Obitsus (my title used to be "Obitsu Den Mother" until I got tired of people calling me "Arklady"... :|). At the last count I had 2 complete girls, one boy and a spare head that's waiting for a body. I also made a customised elven vampire Obitsu 60m for my younger daughter, and I have sold another customised to look like Mana in the "Gardenia" shoot.

If you follow my photoshoots in the Gallery and Photostories fora, you'll often see one or more of my Obitsus; and they're not the only ones. The Obitsu is steadily growing in popularity - I've even seen Obitsu/CP hybrids (thus far I've encountered four Lishe/Obitsu girls, one Soony/Obitsu lass, and even an El/Obitsu boy hybrid), and my RML K-02 head resided on an Obitsu body for a while. They are versatile dolls with far superior posing ability compared to a standard strung resin BJD; some people are put off by the fact that they are seen as a "cheap" option, but they have a strong following amongst people who value them as a doll in their own right and indeed prefer them over the heavier resin dolls.

So in answer to your questions: yes, they are becoming quite widespread and mainstream, and yes - you will likely find people interested in buying Obitsu clothes. As for fit, I have made clothing for Obitsu bodies that fit just fine on both DD bodies and CP bodies; Redcountess has a CP Soo (mature body) that wears a blue Victorian-style gown that I made using an ordinary standard Obitsu body (regular torso, not "big bust").

    12. I used to own an ob60cm. I like obitsu but I don't like obitsu at the same time ^^;. They have such... exaggerated proportions in the waiste and legs, so I much prefer their slightly more proportionate resin counterparts (or their 1/6 versions... which are OT so I won't say anything more about that xD) ^^; plus I just love the weight and feel and... "glow" of resin. But, I think obitsu/DD are cool to make moe anime-ish fandolls and to play with a bit more roughly/experiment than a $600 doll or something xD! But yeah... to me obitsu and dd seem more... moe-ish/fetish-ish xD. So I plan to get another one soon for my fanchara project ^-^. You should definitely put up some of your designs, I'm sure there will be quite a few people interested!

    13. I have two Obitsu and I love their posability too. As they cost less than a resin doll, I have had the courage to do both their face ups, which I really enjoyed. When I first got my Haruka I was really timid and she had a very pale face up, but recently she has had some new cat eyes, a spikey black wig and a Vampiric make over and I am in love all over again!

I have a SD13 sized pattern that I use for the Obitsus but I have had to adapt it to make the lengths longer and the waist of trousers higher and tighter. I make the tops in strechy fabrics which makes the large boobs less of an issue! MSD sized skirts fit the waist, but are obviously very short on an Obitsu.

    14. Obitsu's (and this is the Three-part body I'm talking about) are thicker in the waist, shoulders, calves, bust and hips than the DD, though they seem smaller busted because their rib cage is also bigger. They're also a different shape, if that makes any sense. Less cylindrical, and more like an ovular pipe, except the thighs which are MASSIVE.

If you make something to hug the figure of the DD you might not be able to get it on an Obitsu unless its stretchy, and if it hugs an obitsu, it will most likely be bulky in th waist.

I've heard that the BJD-style Obitsu body is much more pleasant and closer in measurement to the DD, but I've only owned the three-part body (which I hated, experimented on and sold :| )

    15. I think most BJD fans are aware of Obitsu but they are far less popular than the resin dolls. (I think most people haven't seen how lovely they can be in person.) If you sell Obitsu clothes, it would be more of a niche market. There will be people with Obitsus eager to buy clothes made just for them, but most people are not in the market for Obitsu clothes. If your main ambition is to sell clothes, you might be better off buying a resin doll in a popular size.

I used to have an obitsu body and I also have a dd. I agree with cheshiretiffy that if clothes are made in a very fitted way for one of the dolls, they will not fit the other. I found regular SD clothes to be a bit loose on my Obitsu, but it was fine really. The reverse isn't true though, I have a 1/3 Obitsu dress that would certainly not fit most standard or SD13 body types.

    16. I have an obitsu ball joint body for one of my resin heads, and I love it. It looks great with that particular head, and poses beautifully. I also like the feel of the body--it's definitely lighter than the resin bodies, but it still has a nice heft to it. It doesn't feel flimsy or cheap. I'll be getting another one for my Gretel head soon too.

    17. They go into the "Dolls that comes and kills you at night" -category. So no, I don't like them... >_>

    18. Unless the clothes are closely tailored, Obitsu and SD13 wear the same size. Some SD13 trousers may be too short for an Obitsu, but I haven't had a problem with this. I have had to lengthen the legs of a tights pattern, in part due to my choice of fabric, but that was easy-peasy.

    19. I have all three of the primary body types of 60cm Obitsu and I also have a DD2.

The hard body 3-part obitsu and the Luts Mature body shaer most clothing... though Luts girl pants are too short for Obitsus. SoulDoll jeans (I got mine used, don't know if they are boy or girl) fit the 3-part Obitsu body very well.

The soft bust Obitsu size is more similar to DoT Shall... in fact, Shall and my BJD version Obitsu have been known to share clothing.

The thing that I love about Obitsu is the posability... and the fact that I can put them on any steel surface and know they aren't going to fall. (I'm well known for stopping conversations at doll meets by putting one of my Obitsus on the upstairs metal railing... and walking off.)
