Ordering many dolls at once?

Nov 29, 2007

    1. I Only order a bunch of dolls at once. The only time I can afford to is in the spring. School is paid for until September, no birthdays, no holidays as I tend to travel in the winter.
So I've spent a year waiting! My wish list has grown! Can't... take it... anymore. Must buy dolls!!! @-@

As for bonding, well, so far there's always been a huge gap between their arrivals. Especially since I have a limit on how much doll money can be put on my creditcard. Two dolls orders(or maybe one in the case of larger/limiteds) and the rest is in cash. So there tends to be at least a month between each doll, more ifthe company is slow. Hi Soom! Enough time to play with face-ups, figure out personalities etc.

My other dolls are Well prepared for arrivals since I buy dolls based on an idea or plot. Half the time they're excited to finally have their friend or lover arrive. Or a doll presents itself that fits into the storyline easily. The hardest are my mini's who are just based on looks and who knows what personalities I'm gunna get!

    2. That isn't what I said at all. I said it would be difficult, I didn't say it was impossible. It's not like all of a sudden the love-spreading is capped off at three dolls. And most of what I said was based off the hypothetical situation where the dolls all arrive at the same time I just can't picture juggling more than three if they were to arrive at the same time- all the unpacking, the dressing, the face ups (if one do their own), deciding personalities if one hasn't already or if the doll just seems to have a personality of their own that wasn't anticipated, the settling them in (in the sense that one does) and, of course, the introductions to the other dolls. I wouldn't know which one to start with, and I'd feel weird glancing at the ones still in their boxes who surely are mumbling with contempt for being left in their box.

Though, I also made the point that dolls don't always arrive on the same day, which gives one the time to bond. I think PrinceDuCiel illustrated that better than I could, in any sense.

Personally, I don't do a "bonding ritual", but that doesn't mean I don't want to spend time with each doll to get a feel for them. If you're going to love a doll at all, there has to be some type of bonding- some amount of time spent with said doll to achieve that.

Also, I certainly didn't say that no one would be incapable of ordering three, four, five + dolls at once and be able to handle it if they did come at the same time. I only think that receiving an entire group of dolls at once, one spreads themselves a little thin with the attention they give the dolls- especially considering not everyone has loads of free time on hand to do so (not to mention dolls sometimes arrive at terrible times, like when you're running out the door for work. -.- ) And that time is even more limited if you're trying to bond with a doll whose sculpt you love, but it's just not clicking.

And who said anything about people? Dolls aren't people, though I don't think they're strictly objects with how people- myself included- bond with them.

    3. I'm bonded with the doll when I hit the buy/pay now/send/submit order button or I wouldn't be spending the money in the first place. I'd be very ready and happy to bond with an IH Eva and Elchanan (with out that---outfit---) at the same time. I'd have clothes ready for them, personalities, everything. For me it's like OMG--that's him! her! and I'm there, bonded. Obsessively ready to starve, sew bridesmaids dresses, do anything to get that doll. If I didn't completely lack the ability to wait to order one doll before I had saved enough to buy two in one go later, (and save postage I should hope?) I'd say 'feh' to the 'bonding' warning.

Am I nuts or just part of a silent majority when it comes to the bonding before buying thing? O_o

But then again, wouldn't buying more cause more shipping/customs issues for people in some countries? And would someone not be concerned about the probability of losing more than one doll at a time to the whimsical nature of the local shipping gorillas? (UPS I'm talking about you again!)

    4. Ordering more than one doll at once? Ordering, say five at once?!! That sounds like HEAVEN to me.

I'm planning on getting my resin family all at once. Granted, it's not a lot, but I hate waiting, and would rather wait longer in the beginning instead of play with this one while thinking of how to get the others.

    5. I didn't order my PP and my LTF at the same time. I was ready to order both at the same time and had the money for them, but for some reason I didn't. But I was ordering with a friend and I think our reasoning was that we were both ordering two dolls, and one of these dolls was the doll we had been waiting for for ages, so if we order in two stages we give attention to the not dream doll too. or something like that. Bearing in mind that we had both been debating getting a doll and saving up and attempting to dissuade ourselves from buying for two years.

    6. It also depends on what you're used to. I ordered my first two dolls in the same order. I ordered another -- an OT fashion BJD -- a while later. The first of the two large ones and the smaller OT doll arrived on the same day. The other large doll got hung up in customs an extra day and came two days later. It was no huge hassle, other than panic over 'what happened to the second large doll' since I only had one tracking number. *shrug* That's 'normal' to me; it was the foundation experience.

I order a lot of dolls. When they're ordered has precious little to do with when they arrive. For some reason, no matter when I order them, it seems like they all ship in clumps. Two months will pass with nothing, then three arrive in one week. I have made myself comfortable with the fact that unless I simply don't order something until the previous order has arrived, there's no amount of pre-planning around the ordering schedule that will change that. Not exactly the smartest plan for someone who likes limited editions more often than not.

    7. I seem to have a habit of ordering many at once, then taking a break once they arrive to paint them, make clothing, set up photoshoots, etc. But like Surreality said above, just because I order a few around the same time does not mean they will all arrive together, or if I space them out they will arrive evenly spaced. I am still waiting on a doll I ordered before Christmas, and have already received two dolls I ordered a few months or so after him.

I don't think ordering many at once impairs my ability to bond with them. When I purchase a doll it is because that doll is extremely beautiful to me and because it fits one of my original characters, with very few exceptions. In those cases, they don't have characters but the moment I look at them one comes to mind and I feel I have to add the doll to my collection. So, before I bring them home I have already somewhat bonded with them. When they arrive it's like welcoming home an old friend, something familiar, because I know the character so well. I created it, after all.

That being said, I wouldn't want to order too many at once because it might be difficult to keep track of everything. But I think that is the only reason, finances aside.

    8. I had a hilarious case of the arrival issue just recently -- last week? Two dolls ordered at different times arrived on the very same day. They were even on the very same flight to the US -- EMS tracking showed the same dispatch number and flight number, even! That was a bit of a mind-blower. I'd forgotten about this thread when it happened, or I would have had to update that post with that example, which even threw me for a loop.

    9. If I could have several dolls arrive at once, I would consider that the best day ever. :P I don't do the whole bonding thing either, so whether I get to spend five seconds or five hours with a doll doesn't mean much to me. In the end the dolls are here for my enjoyment, and getting anxious that I'm not spending enough time with them quills that, so I don't. These are just dolls to me, and I like to enjoy them for as long or as little as I see fit.

    10. I only have bought one doll, and she's still on her way to me, but after seeing her (and especially after seeing other peoples' owner pics of her), I knew she was "the one" for me right now. I already have her planned out, know what kind of personality I want her to have, and already have some wigs/new eyes/outfits for her.

All the dolls on my wishlist I could definitely buy today and already feel bonded to. I just can't afford to buy them all right now! :(

That being said, I might only get one at a time in the future - not only because of costs, but because I think I would like to have that time to fuss over each doll individually. Doesn't mean I would love new dolls more/neglect all of them if they came at once, but me personally I'd like to have a little "alone time" with each I think. To extend the excitement of each new one, I guess!

    11. I wish my wallet was that big but unfortunately I shall have to wait. For the last three years I have only brought one doll that I most desired once every year and have been on tenderhooks, waiting for them to arrive. I'm hoping one day to fill my bedroom with dolls and when that happens, I will have fulfilled one of my ambitions.

    12. I collect figurines and I've had 10 BJDs (but stayed with only 7) I can buy 3-5 even 10 figurines at the same time and I don't have any problem because they're just for display. I put them in my room and they stay there...in other words I collect them.

But my BJDs are in a different level...it's more...personal whereas my figurines are just inanimate objects for me, they can be replaced and there would no problem at all. (i know, they're both the same but here I'm trying to say that BJDs give me emotion and the figurines do not so i don't care if I buy a bunch of them)

My current BJDs can not be replaced, I'm one of those people who need to bond, otherwise I'd not want to stay with the doll. Having said that, I would not buy many BJDs at once because(from personal experience) I'd not bond with them or would love one more than the other. These dolls are special to me because I create them (the image that is) and give them personalities that are part of myself. If I get 5 dolls at once I'd get frustrated and overwhelmed...in the end I'd not give them the attention/importance i like to give my dolls....if I don't get to figure out their personalities and styles I'd get rid of them so time with them is important to me.

    13. I posted in here before I think, but can't be bothered to find what I put and I can't remember anyway so it's probably irrelevant. When I ordered my first doll, he took nearly 3 months to arrive, and in the meantime I went slowly insane with the wait. Around the 1.5 month mark, I stopped frothing at the mouth long enough to spot one of my dream sculpts on the market place and totally went ahead and bought him. He arrived first and it was very nearly a disaster. It has taken me almost 2.5 years to bond with him, and the only reason he stuck around at all is because I eventually sold his body, bought him a new one, and completely reinvented his character. Fast forward to now and I just bought a body, am looking at getting a head to go with it, have another body for a different floating head on layaway, and am also paying off a layaway on a much wanted girl. Thus, I have no idea how it will turn out this time around. I don't think it'll be the newbie disaster that my first two were, but I finally have a job and I'm going to get my dollies while I can!

    14. I've recently done this, twice...I have two doll orders, a 5star and an Only-Doll order and both orders have multiple dolls (5star has 4 dolls, and 3 heads, Only doll has 3 dolls) I ordered them all at once because I had the extra money at the time and I really wanted the dolls to come at once so that my story "characters" could all be here and be complete and I could work easily on the story with them here. I can't write about a dollie charrie if I don't have the doll (it's hard for me, but I can write if it's just a char from my head and not one I'm bringing to life in dollie form)

I doubt I will have any problem with bonding them because otherwise I wouldn't have ordered them. I mean if it comes down to it and I really can't bond with them, then I will just find a new home for them as others do when they can't bond with their doll.

    15. I always thought that I had to buy 2 dolls together the first time (only one would have been alone and I dind't want to) but....I bought 3 :P and I'm planning to get 4 next time!

    16. My first doll was "alone" for about a year or two until I got another doll....she wasn't a big fan of him though....

This year, I've gotten(and kept) 3 dolls, and have 2 more I ordered who will hopefully come early next year

The two I ordered will probably be coming at the same time, they are from two different companies so I did not intend them to be coming at relatively the same time but that's the way it is! They are two COMPLETELY different dolls though (ones an IOS Jack the other 65cm girl) so I will be able to spend different time with each of them, the 65cm since she will be an empress I'll be "serving her" making her lovely things and Jack the kitty I will need to customize and paint :D

    17. My first doll was also alone, but the following dolls was all, expect one, all ordered in pairs.. I don't no why exactly I had order all in pairs... maybe with the thought to save the shipping cost... (no not really XD) ...it resulted simply in such a way..... but it make definitely more fun to got a huge box with two dolls in there XD XD XD

    18. Hello,

I was able to get one doll but the. A limited doll came along...
I could not resist... :D so now i have two dollies coming in

    19. I never ordered more than one doll at a time, until I bought Shiwoo and Vampire Shiwoo in October and I'm glad that I haven't assembled Vampire Shiwoo yet. I want to focus on one doll. It's too much for me to share my attention on two new dolls. I'm glad that I have another doll to look forward to.

    20. For me I am trying to restrict myself to one doll per year. I believe I will collapse from the credit card bill if I buy too many at once. ^_^;
But on the other hand if it's limited dolls and I have money on hand I may not be able to help myself haha...
