Our dolls shopping vs. our own

Mar 30, 2008

    1. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll? Kinda but not really, I own alot of clothes and shoes that look like my dolls. But i also make alot of stuff for her that i know i wouldn't wear but have wanted to

does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself? i shop more for my doll simply because its fun. Shoping for myself is a job i dont get paid for. Plus with my dolls once i find one good place to get my stuff from then i know thats the place to go.
does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself? No i think by dressing and styling my doll I've developed my own ideas for my own style. While i might not wear what they wear, i would look at how they their clothes and kinda blend that into mystyle.
would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll? If ihad a body like my dolls I would be a lil more flashy with my clothes. It would be a dream to be able to eat what i want and not gain a pound.

    2. Honestly.. I'm told he dresses with a lot more fashion sense than me (clasic style), I guess for me it's easier to shop for my doll that to shop for myself by far and I get more happiness out of it than I would for clothes for myself

    3. I don't buy doll or human clothes very often. I make all of my own doll clothes and my own taste in clothes is pretty much anything that looks decent and is quite affordable. I'd love to own nice clothes for myself, but I'm really not one to enjoy spending a ton of cash on clothing, for dolls or myself.

    4. Awesome thread! I like clothes...but ya know i would rather have fun shopping for my girls, clothes, shoes, accessories! I only have a few pairs of shoes myself...couple pairs of pants, and mostly jackets and shirts. id rather shop for my girls than myself lol!

    5. I totally hate shopping for myself. There are always a lot of people, a lot of shops, a lot of clothes/shoes... A total mess. And when you find the cloth you like it is probably doesn't fit you, they are out of your size or it costs some hundeds/thousands of *put here the currency of your country* and such money is your mounth's salary xDD

BJD is totally another variant. At first we buy stuff from the internet, sitting in our cozy room and carefully choosing what we need to buy. When we decided - we just pay, no need to stay in the line or anything. Moreover, when we usually say "this blouse makes me to look fatter" our doll is perfect (at least for us) and she/he will look good in any type or clothes.
So, yeah shopping for out dolls - forever, lol xDDD

    6. I am DEFINITELY living vicariously through my dolls. I am NOT a skinny girl (unless you count being like 5 skinny girls in one body as being a "skinny girl", LOL!) so I find that, recently, I am buying my dolls clothes I would LOVE to wear. I have two incoming dolls, one that has a very punk style and one that has a very elegant, Chinese/Victorian style, both of which I feel uncomfortable attempting on myself at my size and practically can't with the limit of clothing choices I have. So buying clothes for them is fun and I can attempt crazy things and put them in beautiful things and I love it. Shopping for me? It's horrible, embarassing, and I can never find anything I ACTUALLY want to wear in my size. So, yeah.

Also, I work and we can't wear crazy clothes and do crazy hair. I notice that, with wigs, I'm getting crazier and crazier because my hair I could do SOMETHING with but I can't because of my place of business. :(

    7. I guess I do live through my dolls...I'm in no way fat, but my height and my proportions make almost all dresses or skirts indecently short on me and shirts are too tight on my boobs and tenty on my waist. Don't even let me go into detail about shopping, what a nightmare!

I would really love to wear lolita-styled clothes, but that is never going to happen unless I make my own. So...my little Florence wears them instead! :D (Also hers cost 1/4 of the price of human lolita clothes! SCORE!)
My boy doll, Simon, is just a regular boy and wears jeans and tshirts and hoodies...the only thing we have in common is our matching converse shoes :)

    8. I'm quite comfy with how I look, even if I don't dress like I am. x3; Baggy black pants are just sooo comfy.~ And the little T-shirts at Rue 21 are too. x3
Plus they're cheap. I figure that when I learn to sew, I can just buy one of those shirts and use it as material.~

As for shopping.. Sure, when I go into Claire's and see something I'm like "Oh! Could hand Lo's clothes on that!" Or "Oh, these tiny converse will fit her perfectly! (Which they do. ;3 )
      But I'll buy clothes for myself before I will for her. x3;

I actually just got a package in the mail today. As I opened it, my mom said "OH! Those shoes are for you!? I thought you shelled out $90 for Lo."
I just looked at her all "...Mom, Mtac is next month. You know this."

Gotta get Lo something to wear for that too, though... x3

    9. I'm actually very picky when it comes to buying for my dolls, and while in some cases they are dressed better than I am, I refuse to spend more on a single top or pair of pants for them than I would myself. I do think I would dress differently if I had a body like my dolls (which I am working on. xDD) but that doesn't mean I don't dress myself well. The only thing I notice is that we don't have a lot of fashions in Canada that I can buy in dollie clothes, so chances that I would be able to dress like them even if I was smaller are slim. xD

I have no problem going out and spending say, $200 on clothes for myself, but I can't see dropping $200 in a single purchase for doll clothes.

    10. Like Suomi above I have a hard time spending more for a doll outfit than I spend on myself. Or shoes for that matter. I don't like shoes, ok I love shoes I just don't like to wear them LOL. So my dolls get lots of shoes, boots, heels that I like but won't wear myself.

I have to admit my dolls do dress better than myself. Mostly because I don't really care about fashion for myself but love to see it on my dolls. Especially fantasy clothing that I could never get away with wearing. I really wish I could sew as well some of the clothes I've seen. That way I could make some of my own colors and patterns.

    11. I'm at a point at which I really just have too many clothes for myself -- some fit and some don't -- and just don't see the need to get more. I always went for fairly timeless things, and by that I mean 'artsy enough that it was never "in" to go "out" next season' for the most part. Even if I get smaller, I have things in various shades of 'smaller' that have been well cared for and are just as artsy-fartsy. (I still have some art-to-wear shirts from the 80s, people. Seriously. My closet is hilarious, between stuff like that, the umpteensquillion pairs of shoes, and the remains of my Ren Faire wardrobe/WoD LARP gear from ages back.) I just don't need stuff. There's plenty. Sure, once in a while I get new tee shirts or thermals, but that's about it unless bras wear out or I need something for a specific event. I work from home, so if I feel like lounging around in sweats all day, or even in pajamas, it just doesn't matter worth a hoot -- I'm all about that kind of dress code. ;)

The dolls, on the other hand... they need stuff. There's a lot of nekkid resin around here that I need to tend to, in a variety of sizes. What I wouldn't give for a shrink ray, some days, to just let them wear what I'm not!

The dolls are primarily there to vent my frustrated costumer urges. They wear the things I can't or wouldn't, that I think would be unflattering, or I would feel too silly in. (And I just admitted to working at a Ren Faire, so think about that one long and hard.)

    12. I don't think I've responded to this thread yet. I don't live vicariously through my dolls. I'm egotistically pleased with myself, and I'm fortunate enough to be able to wear whatever I want. The only things I do for my dolls that I don't do for myself are keep her constantly in giant floofy skirts, as I would love to do it everyday but it's simply impractical for me. (Now that it's spring break and I don't have to go any where, time to break out the crinoline!) I have a nice wardrobe, and I usually head to thrift stores to maintain basic pieces like jeans and simple shirts. This is so I can afford my "fancy" gothic outfits. I keep my dolls' personalities in mind when shopping for them though.

    13. :chocoberry I do not have a BJD yet, but I do really bought to my other dolls, clothes that I will never use, because my kind of work do not let me use a too stylish clothes, besides I prefer to be confortable instead of looking good or something like that, so I can said that my dolls tend to be more according to fashion than myself.

I do not buy more clothes to my dolls, no, I will not do something like that, but again I still do not have a BJD, so maybe that kind of idea would change in the future ;)

I will not change my style, even if I obtain a body like a doll, I am happy like I am now. :)

    14. I do so mostly because my doll can pull of outrageous outfits, and people love it. If i walked around in Lolita all the time people will think I'm really messed up.

    15. I tend to dress more casually than my dolls since I worry about comfort (and not wearing something I'll cry if I get art supply all over them) and they don't. Though I sewed matching accessories for us for the first time recently.

._. Though even with their nice proportions, not everything fits them like a glove due to variation between different companies' dolls so I still try to futz with their clothes like how I tend to hem a lot of my pants because I have short legs.

I don't buy more for my dolls, but I do shop/browse more. I think I just like looking at pretty clothes.

    16. O!!M!!G!!
Don't mention about this, I want my doll clothes to be traditional and Royal looking so that these clothes are usually 3-5 times more expensive then my own stuffs. T-T

Now I'm really in a big trouble on how to explain these to my mom, she doesn't even know what I've done!!!

    17. Do you live vicariously through your doll? Eh, it's a mixed bag. Some things my dolls I have on my dolls I most likely wouldn't wear for myself, but there are some things I probably would if I could.

Do you shop for your doll more than for yourself? Haha yes. I don't really enjoy shopping for myself much, but I love browsing and shopping for my dolls.

Is your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself? Definitely! I don't have much fashion sense myself, but there's no reason why my dolls shouldn't, lol.

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll? Honestly...I probably would. When you've got it, why not flaunt it?

    18. I actually do shop more for my dolls than for myself. I just can't bring myself to accessorize or make outfits for myself, and then wear them throughout the day. I like just throwing on random clothes in the morning and then its GO! But my dolls, they just sit there, so its easier for them to wear nicer clothes. But I don't make them wear nice clothes for me and live through them.

    19. :sumomo::sumomo::sumomo::sumomo:sHOPPING FOR MY DOLLS IS SO MUCH MORE FUN. i KNOW THEY WILL FIT, LOOK GOOD AND COST MORE THAN MY CLOTHES. I'M HAVING TOO MUCH FUN. MY DOLLS HAVE LOTS OF CLOTHES. I MAKE MOST OF THEM, WELL NOT MOST.

    20. To some degree, it might influence it. I don't care much for fashion; as long as it fits and goes together, I'll wear it. I'm not too concerned with cut as much as one should be, probably because I'm hard to shop for. I need to try on everything, because most likely, the rise is too low, or a shoe is too narrow, or something.

It's nice to know that clothes will always fit my doll, and that while my doll isn't an 'extension' of myself, there are some nuances of me in how she looks.
