Our dolls shopping vs. our own

Mar 30, 2008

    1. I like to buy pretty clothes for myself and I LOVE shoes, so I don't think I'm living through my doll. I can find lots of nice stuff (The only depressing moments are when all the tops sag in the top because they're made for someone with... actual boobs and stuff being made for model legs when I am a short, 5 foot gal)
The only real difference is that I am SO much looser with what I buy for my dolls than what I buy for me. I see a pair of jeans for 30 bucks and I'm like 'D: No way!' but a pair of doll pants for 30 bucks? Hell YEAH! I have to buy a wig for a cosplay? I spend weeks finding the cheapest option or I dye my hair if I can. Doll wig? Oh it's PRETTY, BUY IT! Shoes, we're pretty much on the same wavelength xD I love shoes.
But yeah, the stuff I won't buy for myself because of expense, I won't even bat an eyelash at the cost of doll stuff sometimes x.x

    2. I don't live through my doll, but I put clothes on her that I love but wouldn't wear. It's not about my body type, but it's about my modesty level. My doll and I are not 100% proportionate (she is a DDdy, lol) but I have the same general body shape and type that she does. That's why I chose her. I wanted her to resemble me in that way. I put clothes on her that I would wear if I weren't such a modest person.

    3. I do not live vicariously through my dolls, but I would spend far more money on an outfit for my doll than I would for myself. Since I also like all the fantasy dolls many of the outfits are not real world appropriate.

    4. I like clothes and am pretty in proportion to a BJD so could wear the same clothes, I want to dress my doll in a style I like but would never pull off myself.

    5. I saw for my doll, which could cost less and get a lot more out of it. But for myself, I always need a piece every new season and Vogue is my must have -- Yes, I love fashion!

    6. I like extravagant, incrinate look, but this kind of fashion is more of an art for me than something I would wear myself.
I enjoy steampunk (a lot) and various fantasy/burlesque designs, but I know that I would not wear them myself, for various reasons, mostly practical and economical (too much of a bother to wear it, and why pay so much if I won't use it).

But I can buy/order clothes like that for my dolls, who are perfect models hence I can justify my doll spending.
All my dolls have clothing I love to wear myself if I got a chance but I would not be able to justify spending money on full-size versions.

So yeah, my dolls' clothes are more expensive than my own ^^

    7. I like shopping for my boy and yes, I spent more money for his clothes - because he can wear those beautiful clothes all the time and whenever he wants. So for me it's ok to spent money for him, then for me xD"

    8. As a guy, I don't have to worry about living through my girls. However I do enjoy spending money on clothes for them more so than I do myself. It would not surprise me if one day their wardrobe was more expensive than mine. It also wouldn't bother me. Though there are specific styles that I allow them to wear and not consider other styles based off of my own preferences.

    9. Obviously, if we were all flawless then of course we would dress differently. Maby all of us live though our dolls.

    10. YesAnd i spend the same amount of time for my doll and I If i had a body like my dolls i would dress more fashion forword my dolls are majorFashion queens

    11. I do think I buy way too much clothes to my doll than myself but I doubt its have something to do with some kind of complex (If i understood right the question?) since I have a body similar to my dolls.

The thing that make me buy more clothes for my doll than for myself is the fact i'm not someone who like to have different "style" . I'm used to wear band t-shirt and jeans but thats it in general. It doesn't cost a lot to clothes myself either..

With my doll I can give them different style I would not wear but can find very pretty, like the lolita style by exemple. And I suppose more dolls you got the more money its gonna cost you to clothe them with the different styles they have.

    12. I used to shop a lot for my clothes. but since Kiara arrives, I don't usually buy clothes for me anymore. or maybe I'm just new to bjd collecting that is why I'm prioritizing my doll. :) or maybe there are some fashion that I can't wear for everyday use that is why I'm letting my doll wear those fashions.. (like lolita clothes, fairy dress, gowns)

    13. I understand how having different bodytypes can lead to someone living through their doll. If there is no possibility or wish for weight loss or other ajustment, I see no problem in dressing a doll in a way one would have liked to dress but doesn't quite want to go through the effort of making possible.
(Whew, that was a long sentence!)
My Zaoll is rather naturally built, and we look rather similar, so I don't have to think about living through my doll. She wears stylish outfits, just like I do, but I do not spend more on her clothes than on my own. It is just as much fun to find a lovely dress for myself, as it is to find one for her. :)
She has small but varied wardrobe, so there are both "workplace acceptable" clothes, casual pants and top, and a nice frilly top set. Whatever strikes the fancy. Just as I have a wardrobe variety.
And just as soon as I will have a proper job again, I will get a new wig and dress for her and also planning to get a nice new corset, dress and shoes for myself. ;)

    14. actually my mom was just talking to me about this! she told me that she noticed that with my ladies, i will beg, plead, and cajole to get my mom or gran to buy them something or give me money so I can buy doll stuff online. But when we went shopping today, I asked three times if they were sure it was okay to buy one simple hoodie from kmart for myself (they eventually made me get two lol).

I don't know if I live through them or whatever, but I do know I want them to have whatever I (or someone else xD ) can afford to give them!

    15. I love my dolls but I wouldn't want to be them. My bobobie Pandora (emily) has a bigger chest then me, and I'm a big girl mind you. I find it hard to find clothing for her then it is for me. I work at a plus size fashion store and it's easy to open up our new stuff and say "hey this looks cute I'm going to get it" then try it on and buy it. For my girl I have to sew or hope that some of the Gods are nice today and let the cloth I ordered her fit well. I think that I'm more fashionable then my dolls, then again Emily is a teen who is more worried about the supernatural then looking cute. Yoko is a elementary student and would rather plan Emily's short comings then play dress up. And my poor boy Shin is stuck in button ups and jeans or more elegant male clothing.
I don't think I would dress any differently. Actually I'm a strange one where I love being a size 16 and love wearing the cloths I wear. I would shop at other stores maybe, but that would be it. I like cloths for both me and my dolls. If I could Emily would have amazing outfits, but it's not her character and would end up wiggling out of them. I love dressing up 1940's and victorian, so it's a flip of a coin. I look out of place while my dolls look 'normal' ahhh the chaos it brings ^.^

    16. If I had a body like my doll, yes, I would buy alot more clothes for myself. Doll fashion is one of my favourite things about this hobby. I love making and buying clothes that suit my girl's personality. But I wouldn't say I live vicariously through her. She actually doesn't have enough clothes at all!

    17. Well, I can't say I agree about the 'one-size-fits-all' of Dolldom, I actually have the opposite problem: By the time the doll size I have actually becomes popular enough for me to be able to buy clothes at reasonable prices, I've already got two more dolls. So I just end up making my own clothes for them. If clothes were more readily available... then yeah, I'd probably buy more for them than for me... then again, I think I've spent maybe a total of $100 on me clothes since I graduated High school... nine years ago. I still wear nothing but t-shirts and shorts.
as for Dollies clothes.... >.< like.. $400?
Okay, so that doesn't count my cosplay, which adds at least $1000 to the me-clothes section.

Given my body type and my spending habits, I'd say I do live Vicariously through my dolls. I'll never have a body like my Dollfie dream, and the 80's fashions I love so much aren't actually going to look good on me. (some people would argue they don't look good on anyone, but screw them, that's why I have a doll. I don't need Fashion sense!)
Now, as soon as I get my body looking more like my doll (Month 2 of PX90, here I come!) then maybe I'll update my look a little. The fashion just isn't that important to me though. More likely, It'll just find me in Sexy-ass cosplay a few days a year, and the rest of the time I'll be comfy in my t and shorts, while my dollies get all the neat fashion.

    18. I would have to say yes :< There are tons of clothes that I would love to wear that either would look horrible on me or I don't have the guts to wear that I dress my dolls in not only that but I spend WAY more on doll clothes than I ever would for myself.

    19. Since I do mostly character dolls, some of them wear outfits I wouldn't even think of cosplaying. I don't spend excessively on the clothes since I prefer to sew them, but I do find myself buying cute things in their scale fairly often.

    20. I will shop for myself and my dolls separately. I will not dress the same clothes with my doll and I will not wear some clothes that not my style as well. It is totally different for dolls and myself. If I have a body like my dolls I will dress up which I'm wearing now ;)
