Our dolls shopping vs. our own

Mar 30, 2008

    1. i don't really buy much clothes as i'm super picky about the stuff i wear and once i find a staple item, i wear it 24/7 aka get some really good wear out of it which tldr; won't effect my finances haha

for my doll? ohhhhhh goddddd i will/have gone crazy about buying clothes for him just because it's a owner/parent thing-- spoiling at its finest is what i would call it but of course there will always come a time where you will have to stop and i'll listen to that call

    2. I do tend to spoil my dolls more than myself, buying tons and tons of clothes that at least $70 a set while mulling over a $12 shirt for myself. But the reason is not because my dolls have better body shape than myself. It's more because I enjoy dressing them in new clothes and letting have different looks. If I have the same body shape as my doll, would I dress differently? I don't think I would. I'm comfortable with what I'm wearing right now, and I don't think my taste would change even if my body would change.

    3. Honestly, I don't live vicariously through my dolls, and I certainly don't shop for them more than I shop for myself. I actually make sure that I buy something nice for me to wear before each time I make or buy something for my dolls, because otherwise I'm spending more money on tiny clothing than I am to take care of myself.

Though, I do enjoy being able to experiment with sewing and knitting patterns and not worrying about ruining a bunch of fabric or yarn! It makes it easier for me to try it "my sized", so I end up with cute clothes as well!

    4. I dress my dolls in outfits i would wear myself..i guess i have a pretty ok body but yes, I can still feel low about how I would prefer to be more like this..more like that..and since I buy dolls that I think are beautiful, of course i will envy their looks. But in the end, theyre only dolls, and theres more to life than looking good in a dress.

    5. I actually make my own clothes, so my dolls and I dress about the same since I tend to make a mock up for them before making mine. It's still insanely cheaper and easier to make stuff for them so they have more, but as for being more 'fashion-forward', they have just as crazy and unique a fashion as I do. I still live vicariously through them, making outfits that I just don't have the dedication to make full scale and a few that, while gorgeous, would never suit me. None of that would change if I have a body like my dolls, though.

    6. I buy myself more clothes than I buy for my dolls. In fact, I'm recycling my old clothes to use them as material for doll clothes. I'm not living vicariously through them, but I enjoy a certain style so I dress some of my dolls in the same way.

    7. Ok usually I read other people's post before replying but not for this one.

I hate going shopping for clothes! Hate it, Hate it, HATE IT! I get depressed, worried, and anxious. I am a big girl so very hard for me to like clothing. Jeans, t-shirt I am set. With that being said if I had the body of my doll sad to say it yes I would dress more revealing and provocative. I would probably also have a different career. My girl gets mainly clothes I make for them and so shopping wise they get only treated every once and a while mainly because I do worry clothes won't fit either of them unless it is branded as from the company. I have a busty msd and an EID woman. I think my girls are more fashionable but they have my fashion taste so that means I am in my mind fashionable. My EID wears more tomboys clothes wear as my msd is more sexy, revealing, pin up style. I think me and my EID have similar look clothes wise.

I don't shop for my doll more than for myself but I do ENJOY it a lot more.
      :aheartbea

    8. I dress my dolls according to what personality they have. I'm not going to give my boy black lipstick and dress him all goth. I love that style, but it's not his personality and he would seem out of place in it.

as for myself. I dress comfy, if I can find cute and comfy all the better but I don't stress over it. I'm overweight but content with myself. I am what I am and if I disliked it so much that I had to live vicariously through an inanimate object I'd decide to change myself.

I do have to say that my tastes influence my choice of doll clothes. I don't like the slutty looking clothes and would never dress my girl like that. others do and that's fine I just don't care too much for that style, eithe for myself or dolls.

    9. I do find myself ordering clothes for my dolls that are expensive, then I go to the store to look at shoes and I'm like, "nah..." even though I am in bad need of a new pair haha. I don't know why I do this lol. But, yeah, I don't find myself dressing down or dressing any differently. I actually wear a lot of similar styles of clothes my dolls do. In fact, my husband and my mother-in-law have both said how much me and my SD Delf Luts Senior Girl Doll named Emma dress alike (even though she has long blonde hair and green eyes, and I'm brown haired and brown eyed lol). So, I guess that's how I want my dolls to be. I want them to like the things I like so that way it's easier to buy for them because I know what I want haha

    10. does this make you live vicariously through your doll?

Not really, no. I wouldn't want to do about 95% of the stuff my dolls get up to.

does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

No. I pretty much did that anyway. My actual human priorities (including food) come AFTER all of my hobbies.

does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

Eh... they wear some pretty dorky stuff sometimes...

would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

Nope. Being one of the sheeple who blindly wear what's "fashionable" has never appealed to me.

    11. I'm really picky when it comes to clothes for my doll. I only have one, and I recently got her in the Christmas of last year.
I've wanted on for a long, long time, though. I like to dress her a certain way--my favorite way of dressing for females--
which is how I dress myself. I'm 18, five foot four, and under 100 pounds. I can get away with wearing a lot of things.
I'm a bit obsessed with looking cute, on myself and my doll. Some days if I don't feel I look nice enough, my day is ruined if I have to go out.
I'd much rather wear a skirt with thigh highs than jeans any day. But, I can't do that everyday.
I'd wear myself out. (Not to mention shaving that much just kills me...) And weather...
Also, I don't like people thinking I'm 16 if I'm walking around my college. Hahah.

Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?
Not so much... A little bit. My doll looks nice everyday. She can wear the same outfit forever and be fine.
She can wear... THE PERFECT OUTFIT... FOREVER. And have her makeup and hair done the same... FOREVER.
You... You just can't -do- that as a human being.

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
I spend more on the doll since doll clothes are so expensive, on things like. A skirt.
My skirts, I can get at Goodwill in the kids section for $5, a skirt for her cost me $25.
THAT being said, she only has two outfits right now, I just ordered her the second one yesterday.
But, in the long run, I still spend more on myself.

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?
We have the same "taste." :'3

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

I'd dress the same. Just more frequently.~
It's more the face I'd like... Being part Korean, I have smaller eyes.
So, I wear circle lenses on a normal basis, and put a lot of effort into my makeup and hair.

    12. does this make you live vicariously through your doll?
Uh, no. My life is just fine, thanks.

does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
I'll likely do that anyway because I honestly don't clothes shop for myself often as it is... because I don't need a whole lot of clothes. My style is very simple... and black... lots of black.

does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?
Not really... he has the same simplistic style I have. Shirt and some jeans... and a jacket.

would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?
You bet your ass I would.

    13. for my dolls I try finding things that look/ fit them very well, I have a MSD boy that is bootylishous so boy pants don't fit him there for I have to buy girl sized pants for him. I like to shop by brands for myself so I try to keep my dolls well dressed in normal clothes. :D

    14. I'm often very lazy about my own appearance, but because BJDs are so small, the miniature aspect automatically makes it a hundred times more interesting to me. Buying a complete in-vogue outfit for a doll is also much cheaper than buying one for a person, and I'm already poor enough for dropping all my extra cash on doll things. xD

    15. I love looking at all the pretty dresses for dolls and everything, but spending 70 bucks on a miniature dress that i could spend on multiple items of human clothes, art/school supplies, christmas presents, etc, i often think it's not worth it. Especially if i can make it on my own. And I'm a teen, so i need to be frugal with spending.
As for body issues, ha. There's so much pressure from school to be skinny, my doll is pretty much inspiration.

    16. I actually hate clothes shopping so my dolls usually have one specific outfit I plan to keep them in that fits them perfectly. However, I really like a lot of old fashioned clothes and a lot of stuff from the Victorian, Renaissance, and Medieval eras which are things that are much easier to find for dolls than for myself.

Considering I really only get one outfit for my dolls, I probably don't in the long run, but in the short run I usually will as I want to get them the perfect outfit. I can be picky for myself, but usually for nicer/fancier dresses only.

I'm not really big on fashion, but I suppose my doll would be more fashion-y than me by default :P As for dressing differently... I'd probably dress more or less the same, but I'd also have more options I like too as several outfits I enjoy are only for very small sizes :/

    17. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll? Not at all! Actually, most of the clothes that my doll wears are nothing that I wouldn't wear myself, with the exception of old-style clothes (prarie dresses etc).

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself? I'm guilty of the opposite–too cheap to actually buy very much except for what I couldn't sew myself, I buy all of my own clothes and make all of hers.

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself? No. We're both quite well-dressed (if I do say so myself ^_~).
Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll? Well, if I had cleavage, then perhaps. But seeing as that's not going to happen, probably not.

    18. I do not live vicariously through my dolls shopping because currently my doll is a punk boy. I used to dress like that a little bit when I was younger but not anymore. I enjoy shopping for him though.

As a plus size fashion minded picky clothes girl I do have a little bit of problems when it comes to clothes shopping but actually I buy more things for myself than I do my doll. He's a boy and needs less you know. I go all crazy on my self and pile on as much ruffles and lace as I can because I LOVE it. I would say I'm more fashion forward then he is because he refuses to wear anything but pants and t-shirts and I wear huge dresses and skirts with all the accessories.

I would not dress differently if I had a body of a doll, I would dress the exact same but the amount of clothes would probably go up.

    19. I do like to look around for clothes for my dolls and plan on what to buy for them 24/7, whereas I hate going shopping for myself. I guess a reason for that is that where I live, it's hard to find clothes my size, all clothes are for super thin girls (I'm serious, I'm not just saying it because I'm quite chubby...). The other reason might be that I find clothes for them to match their personalities easier than I find clothes that I like to wear (almost everything in my area is for super trendy girls...I like black and I like more gothic like clothes...). So yea, I do believe that I like looking for clothes for my dolls because it's easier than finding for myself, but also because I'd love to just dress them and spoil them and take pretty pictures of them with the outfits I pick for them *u*

    20. I live through my dolls a bit, mostly because the type of clothes I buy for them just aren't practical to wear all the time as a human who has to clean the house, do gardening, walk the dog, go to the shops etc. If I could do all that in Pink House style dresses I probably would (and I do own a couple, but don't wear them often.)

I don't have body shape issues and my dolls are Volks SD10s which are on the chubby side for BJD, I think my build is probably very similar to theirs so if I was 1/3 size I'd steal their wardrobe :P

I tend to spend on my dolls in waves, twice a year I might go on a clothes buying spree for them, and then gradually buy a few things for me. I can easily spend a little more on them than my own clothes, but some things like Volks sets, shoes, etc. are cheaper for them than my own counterparts.
