Our dolls shopping vs. our own

Mar 30, 2008

    1. Well my doll gets much more clothes and stuff than me! And also she gets much more expensive things than I could never buy for myself. But, I think our dolls reserve it.

    2. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?
My dolls are characters in my story...they are completely different people than the person that I am. This is interesting however, because in a way this is living vicariously via means of a character; is it not? ;)

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
My shopping tends to vary. For example I certainly took advantage of the after Christmas sales and bought myself several items of clothing recently, LOL! A couple of months ago I bought one of my boys a few pairs of footwear. He loves his shoes and boots... I buy fabric for their clothing about once a week. So I make them lots of clothes. I do not however make my own clothing. I guess it's equal.

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?
My dolls dress up when they step out or have photos taken. When they are at home they sit around in sweats and tee-shirts. As I do.

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

I am much more buff than my boys are. I work out regularly with kick-boxing, free-weights and long hikes. I like how I dress and I like how my boys dress.

    3. I just hate going to the clothes shops XD For me or the others, it really bores me as hell.
Plus the fact that my mother and my sister have quite a perfect body, and I'm more... plumpy. So when my mother comes with me, I do not like it when she says "what ?! THAT size ? Are you sure ?!" Yes mom I'm sure. Moreover I live in a quite trendy area of Paris, so you have to fit the fashion, and I do like it, but sometimes I'd like to dress in more excentric fashion. But you know, when you live in an upper class area, you have to be reasonnable, etc etc...

BUT. It's quite easier for my dolls. I love to make them wear things that I like, I think they're soooo beautiful, and it's so much easier to buy their clothes !

The weak point that is common to both dolls and humans is when you can't find your size of clothes, or when something for your doll is out of stock XD

    4. Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
Yes at times. More then likely. My boys have 'taste' as I myself do not. Nor do I care to be 'in' fashion.

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?
If taking pictures then they are in nice things, if they are in a Photostory (coming soon) Then they would dress according to script. At home around the house? Just in hand made clothing or PJ's I can buy for them any where.

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?
      Um no...Too lazy. xD

    5. Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
Yes..... I buyed more things for them in a month then I do for myself in a year (Exageration... but still true XD)

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?
Yes, but at the same time they do not really follow any.

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?
Myabe I would be more happy of my body and would be able to wear more things... but I would not dress differently.

    6. I make my own clothes, and I make my doll clothes, the only time I ever have trouble is when I use shop bought patterns because no matter what the measurements say they always come out too big for me and I then have to tailor them down.....i should just start drafting my own patterns really, like I do for my dolls.

I shop for everyone at once honestly, as I mostly shop for material, if I see something for me great, for them great, for another comission, great!

I am just as out of "fashion" as my dolls, and just as forward as them...well most of them...one is stuck in the 80's

As for would I dress differently? nope, I dress how I dress, besides, at the risk of sounding like the vain sob I am, I look as good as most of these dolls *hides before stoning for vanity ensues*

    7. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?

Nope. My dolls are my dolls and I am myself. Of course they have clothes I would wear by my own but, just for example, my girl Shima loves yellow clothes and really... I would never ever wear yellow clothes :sweat My dolls simply have their own style and I have mine.

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

At the moment I shop much more for my dolls than for myself. I actually just have more than enough clothes while my dolls are still missing some basic pieces like a pair of shoes or some pants. I also have much more fun shopping for my dolls <3

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

Also a no. Their style isn't very similar to mine so everyone of us wears what s/he likes.

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

Not really. I like those cute lolita stuff but even if I would have a body like my dolls... I don't think that I would feel comfortable :)

    8. Do you live vicariously through your doll?
Maybe, I admit we share tastes haha

Do you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
Varies to be honest, but generally when one starts buying more things for their doll as opposed to treating themselves (non-doll related way) here and there, it starts to be like 'hey, wait a minute...'

Is your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?
      My personal tastes are expressed through my doll's clothes. Some of my doll's articles of clothing are strikingly similar to articles I have ^^;;

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?
Probably, since I'd be a male in that case haha

    9. Do I live vicariously through my doll? Oh hell yes. My plan was for her to have a better and cuter fashion sense than me, because I'm just too lazy to dress up :B I actually heard someone walking past my friends and I when we were doing a photoshoot outside say "Wow, I wish I had clothes as cute as that doll. That's some high fashion there." I almost DIED laughing. Achievement unlocked, anyone?

She's still super new, so I haven't done much shopping for her at all yet outside of a couple tank tops and a new wig. Still though, any real shopping I do for her is going to end up with me shopping more for her than for myself - because I almost NEVER buy clothes for myself. :sweat I have enough as it is, why buy more? However, I don't plan on doing much shopping for her now that I've realized what most companies charge for shipping. If I won't buy a fifty dollar skirt for myself, no way is my doll getting one. o_O She's smaller, so her clothes should cost less too! Augh.

As for dressing differently if I had a body like my doll....
well, I kind of do. :sweat But I'm lazy, and clothes that look as nice on people as my doll's clothes look on her are expensive, and I'm a poor college student. Plus, I'm lazy and don't dress up unless I really have to. So I'm back to just living vicariously through her again, heh.

    10. I actually don't shop for my doll. I just don't have the extra cash flow at the moment. and Mischief is my favorite little guinea pig. he doesn't care if it's the first time I've made a garment and it's a little wobbly in the seams, and has high water sleeves because i mismeasured. I'd love to actually sew more for myself, but that's just a lot of fabric. ><

He doesn't really have a set style, unless looking like the dolly clothes drawer spit garments at him works. Lol.
And if I had a body like my doll, I'd be a drag queen. Lol.

    11. Do you live vicariously through your doll?

Not really? Each doll represents a character of my own creation. Right now... Sanyu would be a definately not. Sanyu's character is nothing like me and doesn't dress in any way how I'd want to dress. When I get Gael, on the other hand, the answer would be a resounding YES. Gael wears everything I wish I could afford to wear from kimonos to belly dancing outfits to all sorts of awesome and cultural stuff. Sanyu wears jeans and a black tank top. So I guess it depends on which character we're talking about.

Do you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

Shopping for my doll IS shopping for myself. :sweat Honestly what I do is... I look at everything and think over a few things before I buy it. What would I use it for? How often will I use it? -and- Is there anything I'd rather put this money towards? This normally ends up with me putting whatever I'm pondering back on the shelf as I normally want to put that money towards Gael more than I want the item.

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

Sanyu, no. I'm not saying I'm very fashion forward, but I'm working on it. Sanyu's wardrobe consists of jeans, a halter top, some random other things (hakama, etc...) and things that I slapped together with my poor handsewing. So no, I still have better clothes than my dolls. However, that will probably change (once again when I get Gael). (Also Delaney will have better clothes, but I'm still working on the one doll and shouldn't get too ahead of myself).

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

Yeah, probably. I mean, I'm not really afraid to wear anything now as I'm actually happy with my body. But if I had Sanyu's boobs (for she is mighty big in the chest) then there would be certain tops I could not wear for fear of spillage. :sweat But other than that, not really. (We both even have the same butt! XD I often joke about how she has a big butt just like me. :) )

    12. does this make you live vicariously through your doll?
Nope. My dolls may have multi coloured hair and punk ass clothes, but so do I, and I always have (And yes, I do work and have a darn good job for my age :P when you're good at what you do, suddenly appearances don't matter so much)

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself? Not really. I own a lot of clothes, and don't shop much for myself any more, but I also don't shop for my dolls very much. Also, I'm lucky enough to have a room mate that makes wonderful dollie outfits who's nice enough to make me the occasional outfit and also sell her outfits to me for a very reasonable price.

does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself? Considering my doll generally wears more 70's punk, I wouldn't consider her fashion forward. I'm not either, but I generally do have a few things from the latest season (even if it is only old navy or hot topic stuff)

would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll? Aha, no. I've had that body and guess what? Tended to wear more covering clothes than I do when I don't have that body. Why? Cause it makes for all sorts of attention I'm not a fan of. My doll can wear revealing whatever all day long, no ones going to bother her. ;3

    13. Lately I have shopped more for my doll than myself. But that's only because she doesn't have a lot of clothes and I have more than enough and I'm pretty content with my wardrobe right now. I'll probably hold off for a long while and just make stuff. I think I've managed to obtain most of my *must have* items from companies... which wasn't a lot. And I'm not going to taunt myself by staring at more sites. XD; I don't really live vicariously through my doll, except that I can put her in things that I can't wear. But I think this will mostly apply to cosplays and things of that nature. If I had a thinner body, I probably wouldn't dress all that different. I'd just buy the things I'd want to buy without holding back knowing it would look hideous on me. XD; Right now I just wear a lot of stylish tops with enough coverage and jeans. I'd probably just be a bit more comfortable showing more skin.

    14. I have a boy doll...and I don't really think of myself as a man! XD haha so no, I don't try to like, invision myself through my doll. However, sometimes I wish I could wear some of the cool-ass clothes and get away with it, like the lolita and kimono, out in public! I wore a lolita dress to Olive Garden with my friend one time, and they put us in the back of the resturant with some crazy old ladies! TT_TT
I sometimes wish that we could all wear what we want, like the dolls, and not be crazy

    15. I actually just posted about this yesterday as a comment in another thread. I prefer girl dolls because I do use them as a way to enjoy fashion that I myself cannot wear. youthful fashions (im turning 28 in may so not real old but too old to get away with certain things) or revealing/scandalous fashions, because I'm too overweight to enjoy them myself. So yes in a way, I do live vicariously through my dolls with their cute lil petite and young bodies. Being overweight is really depressing sometimes when I go shopping for myself I agree, When I was a teenager I used to get upset and cry after going to the fitting rooms, or finding something I really wanted. My weight fluctuates alot, I've been as small as 120 lbs and as large as 230lbs. In my mid 20s I've settled around 160lbs or so. But I think Ive gained a little since the winter/holidays. Even when I was 120 lbs though, american clothing is made so small these days that I would often not like how things looked on me. It is nice to have a way to enjoy fashion and different cultural trends (walking downtown in a kimono or babydoll lolita dress would not be an acceptable practice for a 28 year old woman, but it's fine for my dollies lol) I don't mind that they look good :) that's part of their charm. It doesn't really depress me that I dont look like a doll, that's just unrealistic and unhealthy, but I do like the fact that the doll will always be timelessly beautiful and I can express my fashion desires through said doll.

    16. Shopping for clothes is always a major deal for me, both, for myself and my dolls. Not because I don't fit into clothes, but because I'm a seamstress and every little mistake jumps into my eye.

However, I do shop more for my dolls than myself. I usually dress myself very basic, my dolls get all the fancy stuff and styles. Mainly this is because I don't like dealing with people being mean about my dressing, but when I dress my dolls in say punk, lolita or whatever not-so-casual style, no one will bash on them, au contraire, people even compliment them!
I guess in that point I'm probably living through my dolls a little.:sweat

My dolls always luck out when I go fabric shopping, because of the simple fact that buying 20cm of a fabric is much cheaper than buying 2 meters. So I usually buy and sew for them.

I am pretty fashion forward, but I much more prefer to dress my dolls up than myself, because that way I get to look, admire and enjoy the outfit. I'm not narcistic enough to stare at myself the whole day, though I do enjoy wearing pretty clothes myself.

I wouldn't dress differently, even if I had a perfect body like my dolls, but if I could pull off the look like some of them. (Some dolls are so versatile, they can work any style!)

    17. I don't shop all that often for my dolls because I sew their outfits. I did just put in an order for some male clothing for my Ryuu from Mimiwoo, but for the most part I sew for them. They have their own sort of rocker style (which I used to dress in when I was younger, but not so much anymore).

I'm a bit of a curvy gal, but I've learned what is flattering and what is not shape-wise. I enjoy shopping a lot (especially for dresses and shoes)! But, I probably wouldn't sport the PVC outfits like my Hitomi. Hahaha!

    18. BJDs are very versatile and somewhat easier to customize than humans. I love the artistic aspect of these dolls, as no matter what you dress them in, they always look pretty great. When I get my doll, he will be my little model, since I can't freely mess around with other people's faces and I can't photograph myself as well as I could a doll. I love the idea of creating a whole little world for them and giving them whatever kind of life you want for them. I wouldn't live through a doll, but it's a neat way to "experience" different personalities and styles you wouldn't necessarily use on yourself.

    19. Oh I'm a fashion disaster with a lumpy body, so I love being able to get cute/shiny/fantasy/out-of-the-ordinary stuff for my dolls. Absolutely living vicariously through them in that respect. It's all play :)

I'd look pretty dumb showing up at the reference desk in studded leather anything, too. (with gray hair! that would be wild. I'd love to see the reactions, actually... ;) )

    20. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?
I would say that my dolls represent what I think and the type of people that I like. I am writing a fan fiction mixing with some original characters that i created. There is that house of Airya with a father, a pair of twins and some workers for the house. Most of my dolls fit with a character in the story, except for Tender Black Elf and Dark Elf Sha who I did not have time to think about yet.

The only character that fits myself is the father, but I have not buy a doll that will fit this character yet so..... :P

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
It has been like half a year since the last time I go to shop for myself (stuck with work at the company and studying for the last year of highschool). So in total then I still have more clothes since I shopped like once a month or once every two months half a year ago. But currently newly bought then the dolls have more =)) (one for each doll since the rest of their clothes were made by me)

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?
Not really. I would say that both them and me share the same style of clothing (mostly black, classic looking)

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?
Same style .... but probably slightly different because they have such a perfect body :(
