Our dolls shopping vs. our own

Mar 30, 2008

    1. Well, I would say that the topic might relate to style and type of clothes (to me anyway)

For example, some of the really gothy/punk/EGL dolls are wearing clothes that you really can't go out in without raising some eyebrows.

So in a way it is to express a fashion style without doing it to yourself

    2. i personally find shopping for myself easier...
not only can i try on the clothes first, but if i decied after trying on one style that i dont like it, i go back to that section of the store and find a different style or cut.
i'm having so much trouble trying to find liebe some shoes because her feet are a bit bigger than a standard MSD. i wish i could go to like a doll mall and just try on shoes for her untill i found some that fit and suited her style.

    3. i spend more money one my dolls clothes than i do one myself, but i dont have problems buying clothes for myself, i do dress my dolls in the fashion that i dress my self.
i just like it much more to buy something nice for my dolls.

    4. I don't think it's always easier finding clothes for my doll than myself, as not all doll companies make things for the same proportions, even if the dolls are supposedly the same size. And I buy myself some very cute, fashionable clothes. The only thing I wish I could wear more are costumes. And yes, I do make a lot of them for my dolls to make up for the fact that I don't get to wear them that often - although I think I'd still dress my dolls that way even if I did!

As for dressing differently if I was shaped more like my dolls, well... other than the fact that they have slightly bigger chests than me, we really aren't shaped much differently, so I have never thought of that much.

    5. In a way, I find it harder to shop for a doll (especially in the case of one that I do not actually own yet). I mean, when shopping for yourself, you can try the item on and find out whether it will fit, but the majority of doll shopping is done online, which means that you have no idea whether it will really, actually fit the proportions it says it will.

I don't think I'm inclined to shop more for dolls than I am for myself. For one, I find it easier to make for my doll than for myself, but that's mostly because knitting goes a lot faster for something smaller. ^.^;; So where I'd be buying something for me, I'd tend to make it for a doll.

Would I dress differently if I had a body like my doll's? Certainly, since most of the ones I want are boys. (Eheh. Sorry.) That aside, I might. I'm very curvy in the way most dolls aren't (according to my girlfriend, think "hentai girl" figure, except more human and in the way of belly pudge), so certain styles that work on them (waist cinching, other things I always think of when I'm looking at clothes but don't occur to me right now) wouldn't look right on me.

On the other hand, my fashion sense is nevertheless so outrageous that I would have to say that in some cases, what I'd dress a doll in is less "fashion forward" than my own clothing. Either that, or I'm constantly tempted to dress them the way I would, which... I don't think they'd always be approving of.

    6. For once, I spend more on something else than I do on my own clothing, makeup, etc. I haven't been clothes shopping for almost a year now (my mother-in-law will purchase clothes for me while she is out that 'reminds her of me' XD ), but I have spent a decent amount of money on my dolls' wigs, clothing, eyes and whatnot...

I'm overdue to do some shopping for myself soon!

    7. I don't know if it is easier for me to find clothes for my dolls, I mean, I do know their size but sometimes I still can't tell whether something will fit the way I want it to fit. I actually think I have a better feel for how stuff will work out on my own body. I haven't really bonded to much with my MSD yet so the only one that could be more fashion forward to me hasn't been ultilized in that manner. As far as Nola (my puki) I find it frustrating sometimes because I often don't find clothes that are anything like I would like to see.

      One of the things that I do have a problem with is that I often find it easier to buy clothes for my dolls thaan myself. Often it goes something like this "Oh that shirt/shoes/etc is only 10-15 dollars, I'l get it." And then I continue to browse and before I know it I have four or five outfits and have spent 120 dollars or something ^^;

    8. I think this is a really interesting thread. I just got my first bjd and I haven't determined her "style" yet. I've held off buying stuff for her (mostly because she is an odd size), but there are just so many choices I do wonder how people choose. I've been on sites searching around for clothes and I notice a lot of the items are "sold out". I do love to shop, so whether I'd be buying more for me or for the doll -- hard to say. Especially if I find really cute things for her (doll stuff always looks good to me).

    9. Hm I dont have trouble finding clothing for me or my doll! ( I love shopping for clothing :D)
But my doll does kind off have a diffrent style then me, first of all he's a boy and i'm a girl, I like dresses and skirts, and I wont put dresses or skirts on my boy :XD:.

I like elegant, cute and a bit gothic-like clothing, my boy dresses elegant, cute and he's also leaning a bit towards historical clothing ( victorian age-like ) or atleast thats what I have in mind for him hahahaha :XD:
So we dress the same and yet diffrent at the same time when it somes to style O.o

    10. It's actually easier to buy clothes for my doll than for myself. Because any type of clothes look good on a BJD body~

About living vicariously through my doll, well... No, because my doll has already a character and story of her own that's completely different from mine. Right now I shop more for myself than for Yuuhi... (Human clothes, if you can find factory outlets, are really much cheaper!)

      And of course, if I had my doll's body, I'd definitely dress differently, because in that case anything and everything would fit. Right now though, some things just don't hang well on my frame... -.-;;

    11. So~ I live in like the USA and such. As far as my style goes I'm fairly branched out, I own punky clothes, preppy clothes [to follow stereo types] , bright colours, lots of black, fun leggings and such~!

But, I am not the type to go around in like...lolita clothing. Personally I find it ridiculous and out of place in my country, not to strike bad notes with people but often 'lolita' I see here just look bad, I'd hate to go out looking like that myself.

Yet as far as my doll goes, he isn't here but his style reflects mine to some degree despite our gender difference. :> I enjoy making clothing for him while I count the days, so I'm sure my poor boy will end up in a skirt or two at some point in his life.

    12. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?

Hmm...not really. But well...we can't possibly wear Ancient Chinese clothes or something out, can we? So that's when my dolls come in. Any clothes we can't exactly wear out on a normal basis other than masquerades, cosplays and Halloweens, I'll make my dolls wear them. But they do wear casual clothes whenever I feel that they need a change and not stick to wearing the same over and over again.

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

Nah~ Whenever I see something cute or cool or unique, I buy them. So it applies to both my dolls and myself. :sweat Hence I'm always broke...

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

Nah~ It depends on what I want them to wear now. Sometimes I can not change their clothes for a month, to wanting to change them every week. But more like....fashion backward since I prefer the olden style clothes...:sweat

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

Oh~ If I'm male and with a body like my dolls...I would always dress in clothes that reveal the chest, low-cut vests. :) I'd show-off my body. But I don't do that to my dolls though...kinda don't match their faces...:|

    13. Hmmmmmmm. Well first off I have a lati yellow, and she is supposed to be around 4. lol! So no I would not dress nor want her body. lol! As far as finding clothes for her, I do have difficultly. ALOT of difficultly. All I can find are sleeveless dresses, or not so cute leggings, or meh tshirts. So it has been frustrating, more so, finding her clothes than it is finding clothes for myself. :/
I am most likely, if nothing happens going to be getting an msd quite soon. For a loooonnnngggg time I would have said an enthusiastic YES to having her body instead of my own, and a little part of me still says that, but I've come a long way in accepting what I have, and enjoying it for what it is, a very curvy body, so for the most part no I don't want her body, but due to advertisement brainwashing there is still the little voice that screams YES. As far as dressing her and me, well when it comes to fashion I love clothes, I love looking at them I love making them and I even love buying them, but usually if they aren't super comfy I won't wear them. So the difference is I'm quite sure that my future msd would wear alot of clothes that I would not wear myself because she will not complain that the pants are riding up when she walks, or that the shirt is too itchy, or the collar too tight. lol! In general, we have the same style, I just have to find comfy versions vs anything cute for her.
As far as spending. I've noticed msd clothes are insanely expensive. ......So once again I will be bargain shopping through forums for cute things for her, and maybe once in awhile *cough*mio*cough* not be able to control myself on a few items. And I thrift too, and only occasionally buy brand new things for myself as well sooo I'd say we'd be even.

    14. There are some months where I spend more on dolls, but those are the months where I actually buy an entire doll and not just outfits.

I love dressing up, I'm not as tall as my doll so our styles are pretty different, I try to make more clothes for my doll than buy them, so the cost is usually down.

    15. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?

I don't really think so. I tend to buy stuff I like whether it's for myself or for my doll and more often then not, the stuff for the doll I'd probably wear myself. Some stuff I buy for the doll is designed for their character and so I probably wouldn't wear it unless it was Halloween, but I don't think I live vicariously through them.

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

Well right now I mostly shop for the doll, but that's because I work in a clothing store and so I personally don't really need anything else. If I do I buy it. I am buying a lot for my doll, but that's because I want them to have a decent wardobe. Once it's a bit bigger, I'll probably slow down a bit.

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

I don't think so. I think my dolls have different styles then I do, but we're all fashion forward. I have to be given that I work in a clothing store :)

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

Probably not. I might get things to fit better actually. There's a couple of mini shirts I thinking of getting that I probably wouldn't wear, but other than that, I'd wear what my doll does if I had that body...I kinda do anyways. Did that make sense?

    16. My dolls are definate for clothes that I either can't wear or whould like to wear but can't ever see it happening =D plus they look a million times cuter than I ever could ^^;

    17. Oh, man. I'm gorgeous. 5'5 (165cm), 100lb (45kg) with a great figure and beautiful skin. I've done modeling, been an extra in a movie. My doll's body isn't better than mine. Her boobs are bigger! I have trouble finding things small enough for me sometimes (why no x-smalls/0s?)... and have trouble finding stuff to fit her large boobs. I dress probably better than my doll... at least more chic. She's more casual. I am far more fashion forward than my doll. I feel she's not me and doesn't have to look like the costume designer I am. Having a doll doesn't make you fugly!I shop more for myself, drop more money on clothing for me without hesitation anyway. I'd buy an 80 dollar skirt for myself, but never for my doll without considerable thought!I have to wear my clothing in public. No one is going to judge my doll for dressing like a 15 year old girl, but me on the other hand... I've got to look good.. and good looking clothing looks great on me.

I suppose if anything.. I let my doll dress down, something I wouldn't let myself do. I don't wear print t-shirts or tennis shoes... She can and does.

    18. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?
I definitely live vicariously through my doll. I got into the hobby after retiring from cosplay and modeling, which I partially did because my body was no longer up to the task. Modeling makes you so extremely self conscious, especially when it's your only source of income (oh my god, if I get fat I'll be FIRED!) so when I finally let it go I had to let it go 100% To avoid the temptation to model, I got the hottest bod girls I found (to me, that's the Soom super gem) and now they cosplay for me and always look hot doing it. I had a horrible problem when I was playing hockey, I'd have to spend hours photoshopping out cuts and bruises. If a resin girl busts a piece, I can just order a new one :) So I LOVE it.

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
I spend hours every day shopping for clothes for my doll. I spend maybe an hour every YEAR shopping for myself. Recently I've had to shop more often for myself because, as I said, I let myself go, and now none of my size 0/XS clothes fit anymore. HELLO SIZE MEDIUM!!! For the first time in my life I can actually fit normal sized clothes!

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?
She is definitely living all my Cosplay dreams for me! But not so much "fashionable" in the popular sense.

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?
I had a body like my doll, once upon a time, and dressed exactly like her. Now I'm older, I don't feel it's appropriate for a woman my age to wear six inch heel thigh high patent leather boots and a miniskirt...so if I were to start going to a gym, my slim fitness would probably bounce back, but my miniskirt days are well over. I also no longer feel enthusiastic about going out in public and cosplaying any longer. If I got back in shape I might pick it up again, but I'd never be anywhere near the level of a cosplayer as I once was.

    19. I like shopping for myself just as much as I like shopping for my dolls.
I don't find one easier than the other 'cause I'm a picky person... xD
Sometimes I find myself refusing to buy myself anthing 'cause I want to buy doll clothes, but that's about it.

    20. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?

Well if it did I guess I would want to go back in time as all their clothes and personalities seem to be like those you'd find in a Jane Austen book :)

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

I work in healthcare so I live in scrubs, and don't really keep up with the newest "style" or "fad". So yeah I shop more for my dolls than me because I already own a bazillion different kinds of scrubs and then live in jeans/capris on the weekend and they practically last forever. And its not like I'm going to black tie events or anything so my money needs to be spent on something!

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

My dolls are more and more finding that they like to be in period clothing (Rococo, Edwardian etc) so I guess their fashion sense is regressing :sweat

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

I would probably end up layering clothes since I wouldn't look "fat"
