Our dolls shopping vs. our own

Mar 30, 2008

    1. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll? Sort of? I'm trying to dress her into a particular style that I've taken an interest to and that's mori-girl.

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself? Not really. I still shop waaaay more for myself (I just bought myself a can can hat and several other things through rakuten). I prefer to make her clothes anyway because I have control of the style I want and the fitting I want for her.

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself? I guess I could say we have similar tastes because I want to apply the mori-girl/natural-kei style for her as I have for myself.

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll? Body like my doll? We already dress similarly (dresses all the time, florals, and knits. However, I have hair to style and she doesn't) and we have totally different body types.

    2. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?
Heck no! So I don't have the dream build, so some types of clothes will look like garbage on me and I may have to shop everyday to find a piece that's just right... I love it! I love when I DO find things that look amazing on me, flatter me and make me feel awesome. I love clothes and fashion and want to present myself at my best to the world. I'm the one who goes out and lives my life each day, not my dolls. My forward facing look will be priority ;3

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
If that happens I've either lost my mind or I've already got the perfect wardrobe for my age/body and am taking a break as to no overload my closet.

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

She'll be able to pull of some looks that I can't but I dress her according to my tastes and alot of my dolls clothes are stuff I would wear if I could find it in human size, or that I DO have lol. My fashion sense means my dolls will only be as fashion forward as me.

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?
      I'd have more shorts and not as many knee length ones probably. I'd look a little nicer in strapless dresses I think... and well I'd have mini-skirt compatible legs but I think they're nasty and need to die in a fire so I wouldn't even if I had her legs. XD;

-This was filled out according to my future SD girl since she's my <3 -

    3. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?

Yes in the sense that an extraordinarily fancy dress is a more sensible purchase for a doll (she can wear it any day and it doesn't have to be laundered every time she wears it) than on me. And, of course, there are dolls who pull off looks that are not my look: I can't look like a hot guy in drag (because I will just look like a girl) or a cute little boy with kitty ears (because I would look like an adult woman with kitty ears).

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

...Only in the sense that I have more dolls, and therefore more potential looks to put together, than just the one body I have myself. I don't think I do shop more for my dolls than for me. I probably would if doll clothes were less expensive than me-clothes, but I buy my clothes at Target, and doll clothes cost just as much as mine, sometimes more.

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

No-- in fact, I think my dolls are LESS fashion-forward, because I want to match their fashion to their character, whereas I'm willing to wear anything for a day (thinking "it's just for today, not necessarily my usual look").

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

I... am really lucky with my body shape. I haven't always been-- depression made my chemicals go wack and I gained some weight for a while-- but, having lost it again after treating the depression, I have a newfound appreciation for my body's being the shape I really want it to be. So in terms of that, I already have the body I want.

But... if I had the body of one of my male dolls, I would not wear the cute little lolita-esque look that I have now. I would dress effeminately for a guy, but not in a cutesy way, more just in a glamorous well-put-together way. There'd be a big difference in how I'd dress with a boy's body than with a girl's body. Different looks would look better on them, partly due to shape and partly due to social assumptions. So yeah, I'd dress differently from the boys, but not from the girls.

    4. Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?
Yes & no. I only own boys & so do not dress them up in fancy gowns I would never dare wear myself. They tend to wear pants & tee's or vests! However I think they look more daring than I ever would despite wishing I could, I think they all show different sides of myself, rather than being something I am not.

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
I love buying for my boys, I enjoy seeing them look good :3 I shop more for them, I admit, but mostly because I am not a fan of seeing myself in store changing rooms, feeling glared at by other girls, I have very low self-esteem so I tend to buy online since I know my size & don't feel like I am being judged because I style myself differently T^T Plus you can get some really nice outfits for dolls, haha~

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?
Not really, like before, we dress quite similar only in a boy-girl way XD Sometimes they dress quite traditional (kimono's etc.) but mostly they are with the times & dress like any good band should.

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?
No... My dolls are boys, lol! If I owned a girl I would say the same, I am not a big girl but I hate my body regardless (long issue), I think my body would be fairly similar to a typical female sculpt but I wouldn't dress myself all Lolita or in ruffled gowns if I had a doll wearing such items. I wouldn't be comfortable.

    5. I do live vicariously through my dolls' fashions. They wear mostly traditional Asian, fantasy and futuristic/SF/cyberpunk clothing, sometimes historical and casual clothing too. (Or they will, that's the plan!) See, those are clothes that I would like to wear/cosplay, but don't have the ability/time/resources/interest (and guts!) to do it. So I let my dolls wear them because it's easier to dress them up than dress me up, and I'm buying more clothes for them these days because what they wear is more interesting than what I wear!

But I don't live vicariously through body image, I like mine just fine. In fact, I don't have much of a bust and I actually like my girl dolls to be the same in this department, so I'm bemoaning the lack of small-breasted 1/3 girl bodies these days.

    6. I am finding that my doll has a bigger wardrobe than I do. I put this down to my having a greater interest in female rather than male fashions. As a result, my own wardrobe is mostly functional whilst my doll's consist of anything I saw and fell in love with for being too cute. I even had to put a stop on buying more clothing when I realised that the doll had outfits that she hadn't even gotten around to wearing yet!

    7. Personally, I don't realy live vicariously through my doll, in a clothing sense, and I wouldn't dress like him... because I'm a girl. Although, I don't even plan to dress like the other dolls I plan on getting. There based on my personal characters, and most of them dress nothing like me. If I had more money, was still as thin as I was three years ago, and/or had the skill and patents to sew what I want to wear, I would definitely dress differently than I do now... I have a cute gothic lollita style dress I can't fit into anymore, another one that got stolen from me, and a awsome gothic skirt and corset set that I need to replace the boning on... Just to name a few... Although, living in the middle of conservative Oklahoma can make you leery of being the only freak walking the streets...

    8. I spend way way more on my girls clothes then I do my own. I barely ever get new articles of clothing for myself. I just rather shop for them. I wish that I was as skinny! It would be easier to find clothes that fit me that I like. I think I dress my girls sometimes as I would dress myself. I like dresses a lot and I get dresses for my girls too!

    9. Do I live through my doll? no not really

Do I shop for my doll more than for myself? cloths wise not really. They don't even have real cloths yet.. just fast stuff I sewn so they are not naked. Also shopping for my doll is like shopping for my self.. as "I" am the one who wants to buy cloths for my doll...

Is my doll more fashion forward than myself? Yes. Tho if there was cloths in the fashion I am interested in, in my size I would be just a fashionable.

Would I dress differently if I had the body like my doll does? Yes. I am plus size and so definitely.

    10. i'll probably dress my dolls up better than i do! lol and, spend more on their clothes than my own! i'm a bigger girl, so all the cute clothes don't come in my size.

    11. does this make you live vicariously through your doll?

      Not really.

does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

At the moment I do, since I have a doll incoming. :) So everything needs to be prepared. But actually I keep it 50/50.

does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

Nope. My doll and me wear very similar things. I don't have the perfect body, alright, but I have a normal weight with good proportions and the things I like to wear do look good on me. (I'm inspired by Lolita-fashion, but my style is a little more mature than the usual lolita-wear.)
Even though I have to admit, my doll probably looks neater in this kind of clothes than me.

would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

No, I like my style. And I am very happy that I can wear the clothes I like without looking ridiculous.

    12. does this make you live vicariously through your doll?

No, my doll lives in a different world than I do, or would want to :), and I really have no interest in dressing like she does.

does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

Mainly I sew for my doll but I do shop for her more than myself. I've never been very fond of clothes shopping.

does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

She probably is more fashionable than me because I tend to prefer comfort. However I have a good sense of style, or I couldn't sew her stylish stuff XD so I dress well when I want to.

would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

I don't look that much different then my doll. I might dress a little differently but really not much.

    13. my dolls dressing style is exactly the same as my own though i do spend a lot more money on his clothes than mine mostly because i am really not bothered to go shopping because i dont find anything i like so i guess i live through my dolls clothes i actually find them more important :D

    14. I don't technically even buy clothes for my dolls. I do buy fabrics though, and sew almost exclusively for the dolls because it's waaay easier to fudge up something tiny and just toss it away than to fudge up something human sized that took forever to do and just toss that away... 0.o

I do however, LOVE shopping for my own clothes. I'm pretty slim so it's usually easy for me to find stuff that looks good on (I'm notorious for not really trying things on- I just tend to look at it and guess whether it'd fit or not. Usually it does thankfully, but it's sort of a hit or miss XD) My style is really fun and eclectic too, so I find potential in nearly everything. My dolls on the other hand are persnickety, picky characters that absolutely refuse to wear anything that isn't within their specific style parameters. They just don't look right otherwise, and their styles are generally quite different from mine (Ed is the only fashion conscious character and his style is somewhat similar to mine- although he is a boy). So I end up laboring over a hot sewing machine to produce small fashion line for each of them that reflects their separate and awfully distinct personalities. =_____=

I think secretly that my dolls live vicariously through me actually... ;)

    15. does this make you live vicariously through your doll?

a little, since i can dress up a girl a little more spicy than me^^

does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

Right now where on the same level

does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

i dont really see myself in a miniskirt or tight high stockings, so i guess shes showing off a little more that i would :D

would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

Well, i guess, since i am not female, that i would/should dress differnt. And then again i guess some of my dolls dresses are a little to "revealing" even for a human with her body ;)

    16. My Yun Yun is a guy so I can't really say much, But I do dress him in a style that wouldn't fit me at all XD I do shop on an equal basis with my doll, and He is alot more fashion forward XD

    17. does this make you live vicariously through your doll?

Oh, probably a bit with all of them, even the ones who are a different gender-- but I try mostly to dress them in ways that suit their characters, not exactly what I would want to wear myself.

does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?

I have been shopping more for my dolls than for myself-- but I don't think it's easier!

does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?

Well... um, my dolls tend to wear neo-victorian clothes, so no. But their clothes are generally nicer than mine.

would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?

Eh, maybe if I had a different personality. Most of the time I choose comfort over style though, and so even if I did have such a body, I'd still probably wind up in hoodies and jeans.

    18. It's an interesting topic!

Does this make you live vicariously through your doll?
I would like to say no, but I'm not sure. I see my dolls as being extensions of my personality. They don't have back-stories because they are MY dolls, part of MY life, and that's all there is to it.
But my girl does look great in some things I would never wear, and I feel like THEY dictate their own style.
Maybe they represent facets of my personality I find hard to realize in the real world...? I don't know.

Does this make you shop for your doll more than for yourself?
Strangely, yes. I have a body I'm really happy with, I eat well and work out, clothes are often too short in the leg, or never fit in the waist when they fit in the bust, and yet I find it very difficult to know how to dress myself. I'm not sure what style I want to go for, and often I wish I could look outside myself, and dress myself that way, as if I were a doll.
It's so easy with the dolls. I see an outfit, and just know it's something they would wear. I've spent money on outfits for them I would never spend on myself... And I shop for them all the time. Too often. I'd have new clothes for them every week if I could afford it.

Does this make your doll more fashion forward than you would be yourself?
My girl, as part of her character, is very stylish. She knows what she's doing. Since, whatever I feel is happening, I am technically the one choosing and buying the outfits, I guess that means I'm stylish too. But unlike her, I just don't know how I want to look.
My boy is a lot more like me. He has so much going on in his head he finds it hard to concentrate on his 'outer self', and he has a pretty scruffy, laid back look. He'll wear whatever he sees himself looking good in, but he doesn't really choose in the first place. I have much more of a say in his style.

Would you dress differently if you had a body like your doll?
She is small and pretty and cute and Korean, while I am tall, quite cold looking, never cute, with Celtic, Scottish looks. So yes, if I looked like her I would dress differently. Maybe if I got a doll who looked more like me she would help me decide how to dress myself?

    19. I'm pretty sure that, for the price of one doll's single outfit, I will be getting my entire wardrobe. xD I'd rather dress my dolls than myself - dressing myself seems to be so much trouble. I'm special enough without the extra clothes, if you ask me. xDDDDD

But dolls? Now that's customizable art right there in front of me, and I'm always pro-art.

    20. I think I would die if I don't buy clothes for myself. I'm considered very fashion-forward by my colleagues in college (I go to a Fashion Design college btw) despite the fact that I'm not those typical stick skinny Asian girls... Self-image is a very important part of my life, so you would never catch me wearing sweat pants or really casual clothes- I'm usually in heels and skirts. I sport a lot of different styles of fashion- one moment I can be gyaru then next mori or punk/goth or chic, because its fun. So, in a way my doll's style is something a bit of mine-- But if I had a body like my doll then I would be in Heaven. Long legs, slim waist and firm breasts... I would seriously kill to have those bodies.

Because I'm so into buying my own clothes, I think I'll grow broke in seconds to cater my needs as well as my doll, haha. Most likely I'll only buy shoes for my doll because I just love shoes *__*! And make most of her clothes my self so that I can have money to buy my own clothes and shoes, haha!
