owning the not so popular molds

Jul 18, 2009

    1. I've been thinking of this too. I've just saved enough to get a Dollmore Kid Flocke (female). Looking at places like Flickr, or even Google images doesn't bring up a whole lot of results. And they always say to look at owner pics before deciding, since the company pics aren't always accurate. So far, I've only heard good things about Dollmore dolls, and the pics of the one I want look pretty nice, too.

It seems that - and I'm just stating an observation, not complaining - anyone who owns a Dollmore Kid seems to have a Pado:lol:. Personally, I'm not crazy about Pado at all. I'm not crazy about the expression, or the facial features. So, i can look up Pado and get tons, but when I look up mine, I get at most, a page or two.:(

    2. I'm another one of those people who don't really worry if no one else likes their doll's mold or responds when I post them. Especially since I realised most of the dolls I go for are the unpopular ones. I remember a thread asking the flipside to this - do you avoid popular molds because they're overdone - in so may words. Personally I just don't get buying dolls to fit in or stand out - BJDs are so expensive I have to be 100% in love with the mold I choose and I don't want to cheat myself out of what I'd be truly happy with by worrying about's popular or unpopular.
I loved the DZ 65cm Cosmo (or at least his potential) as soon as I saw his promo pics but he's still not seen much on DoA, as far as I know theres only about 6 of them on the board ATM. And their other 65cm, Brant seems even less popular!
My first doll was a Zaoll Muse, before Zaolls had such a surge of popularity. And Muse is still less popular than her sister sculpt Luv. I also like Bleu Citron, the Dsam 35 body and other odd molds but dislike volks and luts on the whole. So I'm reconciled to being a bit of a weirdo in doll fandom.
Not that I'd ever shy away from a popular sculpt - I'd love a Luv a Saint a Saiph or a Lusis one day. I just think I'm lucky to be able to enjoy my own tastes without feeling I have to have other's approval.

    3. pukipowderpuff--I understand feeling like the wind has gone out of your sails when you post photos of a doll you love and there are only a few peeps from the audience. I've also tried to change up my pics and have really interesting responses. If you ever feel downhearted that you aren't getting the enthusiasm you'd like, at least know that you have scores of other BJD collectors who have experienced the same thing!

    4. I have a Soom Lupin and think he may be the least popular of the insanely popular Soom dolls. I don't really get it! I think he's truly unique and beautiful. I suppose that how everyone feels about their children ;>).

    5. Fistbump for Lupins. I have one too. Hooray for Manlyface mcSulky!

    6. I have some dolls that almost everybody has, and I have some dolls that almost nobody has. I like all of them, and I just cannot bring myself to give a crap about how many strangers on the internet don't. If I can't find enough other pictures of that doll to look at, then I take & post pics of my own. If the picture threads get zero replies, I go out and take some more pics anyway.

The fun part is when there's like a total of 3 other people you know to be fans of a certain sculpt, and you get to see their names come up in your threads for that doll over & over again for years. It's cool. Unpopular-sculpt fans are diehards like that! Especially Dollmore Amos fans, they are such stalwarts. ;)

    7. well BBB tony is one of these unpopular dolls
although he has a nice sculpt

    8. my friends always question my choice of sculpts but once they see the sculpts in person they get all "well i guess its OK" and then end up buying it. i say be different and help out the unpopular molds. and i think you usually get the unusual ones faster since they have them on stock ex. someone orders a kdf lime and gets it in 2 weeks or less while the other person orders a bory and get it in 3 months. if you know what i mean. it can be a plus to have an interesting mold just as long as you love it, thats all that matters.

    9. agreed i have a bbb tony hybrid i really like mine, sadly with retailers it means they don't stock unpopular molds i was told by some for bobobie tinies, that eric, chocolate, and cookie were not as popular as erin, lucky, elfkin so when they make their orders they omit them all together or only order them via preorder or really rare occassions if at all ;(

    10. I got my Volks oldskin F-07 years ago, when oldskins were selling pretty cheaply.
Now it seems she is one of the most sought after of the retired Volks Option Parts/FCS Heads.
I also had an SD13 Mimi years ago who is still not that popular! She is awfully cute and I still dream of doing a FCS with an SD13 Mimi head!

    11. The only problem I have with liking unpopular molds is that it's impossible to find pictures of them... There are hardly any owner pics, so it's difficult when you wanna see more of that mold.

    12. Owning the not so popular molds don't really bother me. I don't really pay any mind that there's not enough of them that can be found online. It makes me think that they're more unique and rare that way. Plus it gives me the incentive to spam their photos up.

    13. I know what you mean. In the database, there's probably 2-3 people with the same doll as me and on flickr, I can only find my pictures and another person's. Deviantart is even worse, ha! It's kind of lonely, but I LOOOVE my doll and don't really care all that much. I don't spam pictures of my boy on DoA or the internet as much though because I know not a lot of people are familiar with the mold and tend to not be interested eheheh :sweat. Maybe if someone request it ;). Taking pictures is hard for me so it's kind of a waste of my time if no one wants to look at him. But I think owning the not so popular molds isn't a bad thing, as long as you like them, that's all that matters..

    14. I would say; very yes.
Kasi Dan from Dollmore is so rare of a doll for owners to want that it's ridiculous and I want him more than any other doll for some reason. To others, he isn't so good looking, but he just stuck out to me so much. I was actually worried that the reason he wasn't popular was that he didn't look accurate to his pictures, but then I saw pictures and I was liek o ok dis good plz.
I feel you completely. And totally.
People are just different, and it's waesome.

    15. It feels a bit frustrating sometimes, but not enough to deter me from my choice. When I couldn't find any owner pics of the doll I wanted I began to question it's quality, design, sculpt, etc....and being a noobie that was actually a good thing because it got me to do a lot more research on that sculpt and company than I would have normally. I looked at more popular sculpts but they didn't "speak" to me the way the unpopular one did.

I don't care if no one else likes it but it is a bit disheartening that others can't see the beauty or potential in the mold that I see, especially when you want to share it with others. On the other hand, it is nice to have a doll that people haven't seen over and over again.

I did get lucky and find owner pics in the chinese forums and that gave me a better idea of what to expect....but I had already placed my order, so even those weren't my deciding factor. ;)

    16. I like that! It makes you, your taste and your dolls unique. Don't bother and enjoy! Only your oppinion matters.

    17. I don't care, what others think about popularity of my doll's mold =___=
Cause my sense of taste can't be matched to everyone. It's only mine.
If I love my doll, who really cares?
Moreover, I'm even a little proud of some my dolls, they're rare.
(I think I would be too jealous to have very popular mold)

    18. I think i'd like the idea of a mold that isn't very popular, Because when you make them beautiful, it changes the concept of new is better ^_^

    19. I agree with the others who've said that it's even more important to post photos when you own the unpopular molds. I find it frustrating when I can't find picture spam of the sculpts that I love, so I like to do my part to represent my dolls in those rarer sculpts for others. People respond positively to my dolls when they see them in places like the sewing threads, even though seeing the sculpt names generates fewer looks in galleries. It's no big deal. Besides, you never know who could see something and really appreciate it, even if they never say it.

Also, if a doll I buy doesn't already have it's own individual database thread, you can be sure I'll start one. The database is one of my favorite resources for being able to see how a sculpt looks with any variety of potential faceups. Some doll names are hard or even impossible to search for on DOA. Mir is the first sculpt I ever bought, but since his name is less than four characters, I couldn't just search gallery pictures. I'd have to search through every Elfdoll in the general Elfdoll database, or I'd just search "Elfdoll" in the galleries hoping to get lucky while sifting through the Soahs and Reds. It was frustrating. I also loved the unsearchable Wu, but his individual database gave me an easy starting point for finding owners to track their gallery posts. It's a great resourse for people researching sculpts, and it makes me a bit sad when I see that a sculpt isn't represented there. There's always a moment when I feel like, "Doesn't anyone love this poor sculpt enough to post a thread?" I know it's not true. Lots of owners probably just don't think twice about the database, but it's been a wonderful resource for me. So I've started 3 databases now.

The doll that I'm saving up for next is a Dollmore U-jee boy, and like all my other dolls there are very few of him around here. I'd seen U-jees that I liked before, but they looked too young to fit in with my crew. I thought his eyesockets were probably too big for smaller eyes and wrote him off. Instead, I started looking at Narin and at Limho Mono. While searching Monos I found some shots of Lulu's Dolce on Deviantart, and seeing how much older Ujee can look with smaller eyes on top of how expressive he is.... changed everything for seeing how he could fit with my other dolls. I kept thinking about him, and I found more and more potential in the sculpt. The other sculpts melted away, despite still being lovely. If she'd never posted those pictures, I'd have missed out.

Any picture could be the game changer for someone else. ;)

    20. When I finally took the plunge into buying Lachrimae, I was honestly regretting it as soon as paypal passed the payment. I had this moment of "he's not popular, there's no owner pictures, and I just...ehhhhh." I kind of spazzed.
It went away in a few moments after realizing it was all okay. I like diversity anyway! I can't even find another owner picture of an Angel of Dream Hao; except on flikr and it's just the head sculpt with no face up, eyes, or wig.
There isn't one on here that I've seen or heard of...
and when I type it into google all I get is company pictures and posts I've made on here. Hah.
When Lachrimae came though, phew! I was madly in love because he's just so much better in person. And everyone who has met him has said the same.
