owning the not so popular molds

Jul 18, 2009

    1. I don't think there's any risk in owning a less popular doll, but if you're interested in acquiring one it can be a bit of a gamble (likely there may not be any photos of said sculpt). Sometimes you just have to roll the dice and see if you fall in love with them in person too! Some sculpts become more loved over time (they may start with only a small dedicated fan base, but grow eventually) and this can be said for a few of my dolls (Supia Rosy, Zaoll Luvs, Ixtee Mui-chan, etc). On the other hand, some of the smaller artist studios may not gain that kind of momentum because they are harder to access or the sculpts themselves are too whimsical for most (I have a few of those too). :)

I try to share my rare ones a lot because they need love too! Additionally, when I come across pictures of less popular dolls I share these links and photoshoots. You never know, it might change someone's mind about the sculpt! :D

    2. I have a Volks Ruby. I know that she's limited, but every person that I've run into have no idea what she is. Though, I like that she isn't that popular, it make her that much more unique.

    3. doesn't really matter if the mold of my doll is popular or not..I like it that's why i bought it in the first place..

    4. i have a little monica enrill there is not too many of him on the forums. i also have a soom sphaler i share with my sister i think he is one of the most unpopular soom molds

    5. I like what I like, to be honest. If it's a popular mold, awesome. If not, that's cool too. To be honest, I think owning a not-so-popular mold makes things more interesting. I mean, I think it'd be pretty cool if an experienced doll owner came up to me and said, "woah, I've never seen that mold before, what is it?"

    6. I think its nice owning not so popular dolls but I don't go out of my way to find them i just simply pick witch one i like most and way my options between two. but if every tom dick and harry has one mold I will most likely choose a different one.

    7. I have a Dollzone Joe, and as far as I know, if someone else here has one too, they're hiding him very well.
There wasn't even a database for him when I got him earlier this year, I had to make one. And I'm the only one that's added an entry.
I think it's cool. Because when I show him off everyone really loves him. So I don't know why he's unpopular to buy, but he is still certainly appreciated. I kinda like having one of few.

    8. I've been informed recently that the scupt I'm planning to buy on Friday is a very uncommon one, and I'm actually pretty excited about it. I don't see that as a bad thing at all, it just means that I need to post pictures a lot, so that people can see what she looks like, since bobobie's site is terrible for that.

    9. Having only one doll, I've not run into the popularity contest of dolls much excepting in dealing with the only friend-doll mine doll has. Both myself and the other owner were hanging out with our dolls when someone interested in ABJD came to chat us up, asked what their molds were, and as soon as she said hers was an An, the person started ignoring her and only talking to me with my Luts El.
It was really rude and affronting, and we made a joke of it later calling it 'dolly racism' . But really, any doll can be made into a captivating, interesting piece of personality and art with the right effort and customization. If they all looked the same we'd all be back to buying pink-box barbie out of the local toy stores.

I think it's important for everyone, not just owners of 'unpopular' or of 'popular' molds exclusively, to realize that not just a mold defines a doll, but the whole picture of make-up, outfit, story, styling, mods and staging with poses. Some molds I never looked at on a store page have really caught my eye later as someone's personal character they put a LOT of effort into designing.

And as everyone else has said before, when all the cards are down, what is really important is whether or not YOU are enjoying YOUR investment. If you like your doll then you made the choice that was right for you.

    10. I personally don't think "sculpt popularity" should matter. Every single doll I own and want are extremely popular or well known XD but I just don't care. I bought them becasue I love their molds just as much as everyone else, so who cares if there are a million out there? Also, I agree that if you have a less popular mold it should encourage you to post photos...it may encourage others with that doll to post too!

I just think as long as you buy the dolls you want then it doesn't matter how many other people have them.

    11. I have an Island Doll Lillith and I don't see that many people with them on this forum. The only thing that made me hesitate in getting her was lack of owner pictures. I really don't care if the sculpt is popular or not. In fact, I kind of like the idea of owning a doll that is not popular.

    12. I definitely think there are reasons some dolls get popular, if they weren't lovely it would be so! However, I don't want to look at my boy and see him as his mold, but as the boy I bought. As far as I know, there are only two people on this forum that own a Dolly Family Lyre, me and a very nice Australian lady. I chose him because he was exactly what I wanted, and at a price I felt was reasonable. No regrets.

However, reactions to him has been mixed. There are those that have ignored him for more well-known dolls, and there are those that having glanced at his face once have leaned in to examine him and told me how lovely he is. I will have to say it could have been how plainly he was dressed as well. Jeans and a t-shirt don't excite like a Soom fullset. ;)

    13. I love the not so popular molds...but there is always the worry that selling them will be a pain if things go wrong.
Sounds like a horrible thing to think when buying a doll you are meant to adore and keep but it's a LOT of money and buyers on the MP are far less willing to part with their cash than before. I've bought a less popular mold before (Elfdoll Tasha) and ended up having to sell her. It took a long time to sell her and I made a massive loss which stung quite a bit.

    14. I love having the "odd" sculpts! They might not be that appealing to a wide variety of people....a lot of people hate RS Lu, but I LOVE Maddy!

What really matters is that you like your doll. But honestly, I think people with unique or rare sculpts SHOULD post more! So often, I've searched through DoA looking for owner pix of certain sculpts and found nothing. If more people would post their rare dolls, it might encourage others to buy as well.

and even if people don't like my doll, I'd rather hear "Oh. that is....different!" than "Oh...another one of THOSE. >.> " My doll feels more special and personal to me when not everybody has one.

    15. I'm inbetween it, I have popular dolls like Lishe and Jessica but I also have Soom Lupin, who is actually discontinued due to lack of purchases. I think it's nice, I guess I just see something in him other people don't. I'm also paying for SID Storm, he's not very popular either, most people like Lee or Felix. It may eb that most people like very 'pretty' boys and I like them to look more 'handsome'.

    16. My first doll to arrive was my RS Yao and there aren't many owner pics of her or the RS Ai that I like, leading me to believe they're not very popular, but I love my Baiul to death anyway. I think that if everyone bought the same mold, things would get very stale very quickly. I love admiring other people's dolls even if they're an "unpopular" mold. If the owner loves them, that's all that matters, you know?

I almost feel bad for not liking the "popular" molds because they're so well-loved. I can't find any Volks or Luts dolls I actually like. o_o But then I tell myself that other people love them and that's awesome. Everyone's doll is unique.

    17. My choice of dolls always tends to the less popular. My boy is an Abio Angel Yi, a rare, unpopular doll. My Girl is a Domuya Saisha. Their bodies where more popular than them, and I have two little Asleep Eidolon Tinies, which seem down right ignored for the sake of pukifee's ;_; But I love my dolls, and I just don't share them on DoA anymore. ^_^

    18. I never much pay attention to which doll is popular, even if it is the least popular doll on earth and I think it is beautiful, it's worth much more than what I am paying for it. Honestly I think most people tend to judge by the look of a doll rather than it's rarity, if it's super rare but is as ugly as sin, they aren't gonna spend most of their hard earned money on it. That generally goes to the people who want to make money off the dolls, they will invest to make more back later. Not that there is anything wrong with that unless they are way over-charging people, but it's just not for me. I like what I like, end of story...

    19. I don't mind having an unpopular sculpt. As long as I really like the sculpt it doesnt matter if she is popular or not. "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" =D

    20. If I like the sculpt, I'm not about to go out and look if others love it as well. The most that bothers me is that maybe when looking at a sculpt and wanting to be sure it's what I want and no one has it to give owner pictures. That's the only downside to me.

I have two dolls that aren't a popular sculpt. Only one I regret purchasing, I'd fallen in love with the faceup the company gave him, not entirely the sculpt. And then it'd be harder to sell him as it's unpopular. He's grown on me with a different character for him so I'm not so much regretting now.

The other I love and am surprised there aren't more out there. As far as I know there's only two in the world.
