owning the not so popular molds

Jul 18, 2009

    1. The dolls I like are usually pretty unpopular (or so it seems). It's like almost no one has them, and finding owner pictures or more information about them can be very difficult.
It's a headache when I want to buy from these shops, of course, because, just like anyone else, I feel uncomfortable in giving so much money to a company I don't know that much about :(.

But, this is the only issue I can think of when it comes to owning a doll that isn't very popular. To be very honest, I even prefer if my doll is different and harder to find - it's part of the fun, to me. Whenever I find this new/relatively unknown company selling a doll that I instantly love, it's great ^^
Of course, I would be glad to see a great unknown company receive more attention - I'm unsure as to why many of them don't. Maybe most people happen to be the exact opposite of myself, and prefer buying the super popular sculpts that show up everywhere, all the time xD

About what others might think of my choices - I truly can't bring myself to care .-."
I don't usually post pictures of my dolls around anyway, so, well.

    2. Doesn't matter whether it's a popular mould or not as long you happy with the mould or sculpt...
like example most people like this popular mould because most of them have the same taste or interest..
but when you like one and only unique for you that steal your attention, grab it if you truly fall in love with the mould...
you're have a unique taste... be proud of it :sumomo:

    3. So long as you love it, it's no problem :). When you are spending so much on something, you want it to be right for you, not for other people.

    4. This is exactly how I feel about it. On the other hand, I do like to make pictures of my dolls. So I can help those thinking about the same doll other people. It is of course true that you don't get a lot of comments on a less popular mold. But I often get messages with questions about my dolls and that always makes me happy:D

    5. I suppose all of my dolls are kind of "unpopular" in that you don't see that many old Customhouse SDs around anymore and Rosette girls are an odd size. Even my one Volks doll is not a sculpt you see around much. It's actually kind of nice to make friends that are fans of some odd little sculpt that isn't so "popular" you don't get lost in the shuffle so much and people are always asking me questions about my odd little group.

    6. Updating my opinion as I have more dolls now. They're still mostly unpopular.
I also just recently got one that is so unpopular I can't believe, I even had to open the company feedback thread and only one other person posted in it.

On the other hand I also have a minifee woosoo elf that is fairly popular, but I liked the woosoo sculpt since it first came out on the luts site and always wanted a female mini version of it.

    7. Mine seem to be either the most or least popular sculpts - but my taste is weird like that. I have a feeling that me and one other person on DoA will have the only tan Pukifee Chocos around.

I love seeing all dolls - the more, the better.

    8. I've got a few fairly uncommon/unpopular sculpts around here, one from a company that hasn't had many sales (at least to DoA). I don't really mind it, other than that I feel like I ought to be posting more photos, to make up for how uncommon they are! I don't personally think "uncommon" necessarily means "unpopular," though. Sure, there are molds out there that will have extremely limited popularity for one reason or another, but I think most uncommon dolls likely have some other reason behind it than that no one likes them, so there's nothing to feel bad about at all.

    9. The only thing I find about having a doll that is really rare (single artist limited release) is that there is no one else to discuss and compare pics of him with. I even started a thread to see other peoples dolls from this artist and not one single one has appeared.

    10. I usually prefer the not so popular molds. More personal to me. But there are several that I want that I see plastered all over the web. Its cool though since I see what others do with them.

    11. I've got a couple of popular dolls.......... I've got a couple of unpopular dolls.......... I've got a couple of dolls that, I am sure, are quite unknown to most of the collectors and weren't very successful. And I don't care because I love them all.
When I choose a doll, it's because I love her, because I want her, no matter the popularity or rarity of the mold. The only thing that can stop me is the price. Actually, it often does:pout::pout:.
As for showing them on the net, there are a lot of dolls I haven't showed yet on any forum because.........well.......... showing a doll for me is like showing my precious  It always takes a very long time before I make up my mind to do it. But when I do, I never think of what other people may think about my doll. Just because I love her and that's all what matters.

    12. I own a mold of which I've never seen another owner picture. I don't think it is a bad thing (I can show everyone how beautiful the mold can be) but the sad thing is I had no idea how he would look without the company face up. He turned out gorgeous but because the lack of photos I was quite nervous.

    13. Popular is subjective. Lots of people post pictures of dolls that I would never buy, as I probably own dolls that others would not. I chose my dolls because I like them and have to look at them, not because they were well-loved by others. It's the same way I pick out my clothes! :)

    14. I rarely ever see people talk about my AS Baron Samedi. Ever. And if I do, it's usually about his zombie form [I have his human]. It doesn't bother me. I love him to pieces and that's all that matters, really. If I ever come across someone who owns the same sculpt, I hope we become instant friends.

But I noticed that a lot of the dolls on my wishlist are from big name brands [SOOM, DoD, AS, etc] but the sculpts themselves I NEVER see talked about. And that doesn't waiver me at all. I'm in this hobby for myself, and just because my doll is unknown, doesn't bother me an inch. :3

    15. I have a doll that is very unpopular and two others that are not hugely popular. Mostly because of their size. But I don't see the problem. I love those dolls for that exact reason. If other people don't like those dolls, fine with me. It also happens the other way around.
As for the response part....people are very funny when it comes to that. That recently happend to me. Introduced new doll on another forum - great and many comments. Same doll, different photo's/style - hardly any comments.
I think we seek a certain liking amongst others
And remember, you got those/that doll(s) because YOU like them, not because the rest of the world should like them.

    16. All my dolls are tinies, and some of them are mature tinies which are not the most popular scale. One of mine is from a line that was discontinued, presumably due to the scale. Its rather sad that no one else seems to have one as her posing is amazing compared to some others. However, mature tinies have been becoming more common lately...

    17. I generally do not pay attention at all to popularity of sculpts. It is true that the more popular ones get more 'air time' so I'm more likely to see them - but that's the only way it affects me. I choose my sculpts (facial ones) based on the characters I need to shell. So I've got a total mix of popular & not so common ones. I pay more attention about other's opinions on bodies - I go searching to see about posability etc - but that seems practical rather than some popularity thing.

    18. Three weeks ago I ordered one of the most unpopular dolls. She is a Dolkot Model Belinda. I have not found owner photos of her anywhere. There are none here on DOA, none on any other bjd forum, none on any of the photo sites like flickr, photobucket, imageshack or any of the others. None anywhere on the internet that I have found. The only photos I can find are the company photos. Here on DOA and on other forums I have found people who said they were going to get her and then when I PM'd them to ask them if they did get her so I could see photos they all said they didn't get her. I think it is because Dolkot had issues in the past. So while I am waiting to receive her the only photos I have to look at are company photos. Luckily on the Chinese Dolkot site they had photos of Belinda in other wigs besides the long whitish-gray one she wears in the company photos and other outfits besides the wedding dress. When I get mine I can post photos of her everywhere and I don't have to worry about people saying "OH another Belinda!" like if I bought say a minifee Chloe. Chloe is pretty but there just so many of them around. Perhaps if I post photos it will encourage others to purchase Belinda as well. One of the reasons someone gave me for not purchasing her when they wanted her was that there were no owner photos of her around.

I also want one one each of the 90cm AOD boys. A few people on DOA have one or more of them but I noticed a lot of people claim they don't like the heads. I love the heads. They are not the usual pretty boys that a lot of companies make. I think they have a lot of personality and I find them adorable. I also love the werewolf AOD made a few years back,Jurgis. Alot of people didn't like Jurgis but I think he was awesome and I hope to find one on the MP or ebay. I tend to go for the underdogs or the ones a lot of people don't like. But I do have 2 Elfdoll Sooahs who are fairly popular. One is white skinned and the other is normal skin.

    19. I really don't ask me this question
      popular
      non popular
      who's care ?
the most important is to have the doll we love :)

    20. My three bjds are mature tinies (which seem kind of rare); I love them; they're beautiful, and they don't take up a lot of room. I do wish that it is easier to find clothes and wigs for them. Otherwise, I don't care about how popular they are, or who likes them.
