owning the not so popular molds

Jul 18, 2009

    1. *hugs Sey* Sometimes I feel that the Eden mold is one of the least popular Volks molds ever. That makes me a bit sad, but more determined to spread the Eden love lol <3 :) These days I find myself photographing him more than my DoC U who is magnitudes more popular a mold.

    2. My dear Hana is probably one of the least popular Dollmore molds out there(Hwi-ki)---I think she get's maybe 6 or 7 responses anytime I post her up in the gallery, but I really don't care. <3 I adore her, and think she's fabulous, and the people who respond seem to really like her, so..yeah. That's all that matters.

It could also partly be chalked up to my wretched picture-taking skills. XD

    3. I have a Dollzone Luke and hes not the most popular DZ mold out there, but people seem to like him when they meet him. I personally think its great to own a mold thats not popular, that makes the doll more unique. My DZ Luke is very bland, both in personality and appearance, so I fear that he would would look too much like everyone else if he was a popular mold.

On the other hand, its not a nice feeling when people dont like your doll, but I guess you would just have to live with that. I think not so popular molds are great :D

    4. most of my dolls aren't popular but i actually like it that way :)
my hyo shin is probably the only x2 elizabeth on this forum
i also have a serendipity noel, i've seen that most who liked serendipity had chosen sharmin... i remember when i was new in the hobby and i thought that serendipity only produced one doll

    5. The only thing about being interested in unpopular molds is that it's so hard to feed your hunger for pics. It makes it really hard when deciding on a doll - everyone will tell you to "research owner pics" buit that kind of presupposes they are there to research. In the end, you just have to go on faith.

And I'm no good at redressing this, I have no talent at photography, or I'd spam the world with Jin, for example, just to show how lovely she is. :)

      ETA:
I've had exactly the same impulse! There are a couple of very unique and lovely ones out there, but she is such a quirky, heavily flawed, unique doll that somehow she makes me come over all protective and want to have one and make her pretty. It's the underdog thing.

    6. I've always been the one to like the not so popular bjd molds. But if you love your doll that's all that matters.

    7. I think I own, although few, several BJD of that kind. For example, I have never seen any other BuddyDoll W-Buddy Jiny at DoA besides mine. Does it matter to me? Does it bother me? Honestly, it does not. For me the important thing about the theme of this thread is you like your doll. About posting, there may be people who like seeing most popular molds, other who like just the opposite and also people, like me, who like watching both. I do not regret owning the "not so popular" sculpts I have. I love them as much as, and in the same way, I love my other molds.

    8. Woah, I just realized that three of my four BJDs could be considered unpopular. At least, there are hardly any photo threads of them in the Gallery (except for my spamming, which is a lot). It's kinda nice, actually, because I know they're mine and probably won't be mistaken for anyone else's. I think it gives them a little more personality and a little bit of an aura of specialness. I also love my super popular mold, Delf El, because I find him gorgeous. But the lack of popularity for SDF Blanchet and my Kaede's doesn't stop me from loving them just as much. :)

    9. A couple of years ago I had the only Notdoll Ligaya on the board. Respones to her was minimal becasue she was new, and not very popular, but I didn't mind, because at the time I really liked her, and any respones I got to was nice.

    10. Mine's a Doll Family Lingfeng. Lately they started to be more popular, though they're way too underrated in my opinion. So, unpopular, yes. I have 2 gallery post with him, without any respond :sweat(Guess thats partly my fault as well, for not being too active up here so noone knows me :sigh)
Anyways, I like it as it is. At least there isn't a million of them out there so I feel special
Therefore... unpopular dolls often may be way more beautiful than superpopular dolls, which arepopular just because of their company... imo :sweat

    11. I think some (not all, but some) dolls aren't as popular just because of the faceup.;;; Like, either the default faceup on the site, or even trends in owner faceups.

Recently I've been looking at Notdoll's Royma, but I have no plans to buy him because I can't find a single owner picture, and so I don't feel like I have nearly enough information.;;;; However it looks like he has the potential to be really cute. I don't get why nobody has him. (He came out in 2007!) Maybe they've all been scared off by the second faceup available... because while faceup A looks like a sweet, normal school boy, faceup B looks like a psychotically murderous tranny who has just been betrayed. O_O

And I've been following a conversation about one of the less popular Minifees, Ruth, (who I just ordered) and a lot of people are saying they don't like him because they dislike the mean, mischievous smirk on his face. Neither do, I really. (Personally I think it makes his face look squished.) But I've seen a couple pictured of him looking TOTALLY sweet and innocent and un-squished. It's all in the eyebrows! Most faceups I've seen on Ruth have angry eyebrows, but lift up the eyebrows and he'll have a perfectly innocent, happy smile on his face.

So anyway, for me, if I end up owning unpopular dolls, I feel like it's just going to motivate me to show people how beautiful (or, maybe more appropriately, how not-creepy..) the sculpts can really be by giving them the best faceup possible. >3< Starting with Ruth! (Who, being a Minifee, is not really unpopular.. but compared to other Minifees is less popular than I think it should be.)

    12. I seem to be innately drawn to unpopular sculpts. When I see them, my heart swoons... and then when I go research owner pictures, there are slim to none and I find out very few people have them! It's very difficult to get my spam fix when there are so few pictures out there!

DZ Jake is not a popular sculpt at all. But, like KAGE and her/his DZ Luke, when I post pictures of my Jake people respond very positively to him (even though he's currently blank). I've had people tell me that my boy changed their opinion of the mold / made them see how beautiful he can be / etc, which makes me very happy and proud. His promo pictures are, quite frankly, pretty horrible. I have to admit that at first I shrugged him off because I thought his official pictures looked so childish and not my style. Then I saw a few owner pictures and it was love at first sight. :D

Dolkot Junior Day isn't very popular, either. I only know of two or three others here on the forum. I think that is partially due to Dolkot's past, which is a real shame. I know I love my Day to bits. By comparison, MNF Rheia - though not "uncommon" - is not nearly as widely seen as other MNF girls but her popularity seems to be slowly increasing. Come to think of it, I don't see too many Brownie GoGos, either. Out of my current crew I guess DOC Petsha is the only "popular" sculpt I own.

I would say 75% of dolls on my wishlist are unpopular, too (Delf Edgar, AS Cinderella, LM Yuria, - just to name a few). People regonize that they are beautiful sculpts, but I think they are overlooked for various reasons. Which is fine... it just means when the time comes I'll need to spam them, myself. ;)

    13. Another one for the 'unpopular doll' club. I have dolls who are not only no longer standards but also got de-FCS'd due to their unpopularity. I don't post photos of them around here because no one wants to see them.

Do I care? Not really. It just makes me want to adopt every one of them who shows up for sale. ;)

    14. Hey, I adore my Soom Meisa, and there are perhaps four of them here of DoA and one in Russia as far as I know, and that's it! Because this fantastic mould didn't gain popularity fast enough, it's being discontinued by the manufacturer. Makes me sad...

    15. I have two dolls, both at least somewhat unpopular. My first was a KD Ani...but as a boy. Just about everyone I see with an Ani has a girl body. It's just that I saw the sculpt and realized he'd be absolutely perfect for kid Kimimaro (from Naruto). My other doll that I have right now is a HappyDoll Dorothy. I saw one of her fullset pictures, the one with the kind of punk outfit, and absolutely fell in love with her. There are only 7 other Dorothys on DoA (at least, according to the database) and I'm just glad I was able to get her before they were totally discontinued and Happydoll went out of business.

Sadly, my faceup skills are still rather lacking, so I really haven't done much photography of either of them. I need to make yet another faceup attempt on both of them...

    16. I think I have a mixture of popular and un-popular ones. I don't get many comments here for really anything I post picture wise, but..cant say it really bothers me all that much.

    17. I too have a mix of popular and unpopular ones. Poor AngelHeim Zion is faily unpopular....theres hardly any owner pictures of him out there. Makes me sad cause I think he's a handsome guy. But thats ok, I love him and I love working on him :)

    18. it feels a little bad that you've spent so much money on a doll no one likes
Dolls are a vanity buy and you customise them to show them off. if no-one likes that you see little point and loose faith in your dolls sometimes. I've got that before, but i still love my dolls to bits and if i love them i don't see why i should be offended by their lack of love from other people

    19. I personally feel that if something is popular, it means it's easy to see the appeal. You've found beauty where other people can't, or don't have the patience to see it. That is a great quality that you possess! Treasure it, and your dolls. Veel liefs. x

    20. On the contrary! Deep down it's a guilty pleasure of mine to know that I own a sculpt hardly anyone else has, for example my Angell-Studio Antonine, Dante, whom I love to death. I've only known one other person on DoA (as well as anywhere else) to own one. Makes both me and my boy feel kinda special, y'know? XD;

I don't really mind much about the 'popularity' of the sculpt--although I seem to have a soft spot for lesser-known sculpts--but then again I just care what I think about it. If I love it, I love it, and if I want to have it, I'll have it.
